Beverly Hills 90210 on acid? Sounds about right.
I bought this movie from a clearence sale at this video store. I had never seen it before, but I thought I'd really like it because there are a million people in the movie that I love. Plus, I thought, if I really hated it I could return it.
So, I watch it. And I end up loving it. I gave it four stars because all of the [...] scenes between Heather Graham and Ryan Phillippe got on my nerves. Other than that, it had a great script, great acting, great characters, it was just full of perfection.

The thing I loved about it the most: It's not an average movie. It's dark, and extremely unusual. Gregg Araki is now one of my favorite writers and directors (along with Tim Burton and Darren Stein).
Another thing that was great: You can understand where the characters are coming from, and they cover practically every teenager type from the late 90's. Valley girls, goths, geeks, everyone! It's realisitc in some sense (You know, besides the aliens).
Seriously, I have a lot more appreciation to most of the cast members: Kathleen Robertson, Jordan Ladd, Christina Applegate, Rachel True (Even though I liked all of them before) and this movie introduced me to James Duval, who is a very good actor, and had a great character who I could really relate to.
Oh! Another thing about this movie: The bright colors. I was really distracted by them. From the color of the val chicks dresses, to Lucifer's hair.
The val chick scene was probably one of the most exagerrated scenes in movie history, which made it classic.
See it! I don't recommend it to everyone, but I do recommend it to people who have ever felt confused ,or misunderstood about life, love, and more than anything: death.

Creative...interesting...whatev...
When I first saw "Trainspotting," I thought THAT was a messed up movie that was good because of its accurate portrayal of heroin addicts and the fact that it do so was a gutsy move...which was another reason it was good. I personally feel that movies should take chances and challenge the viewers' mettle for watching, no matter how blatant or unnecessary it may seem. There is something to be said for a subtle message portrayed through the worst possible plot, script, acting, etc...it shows a willingness to accept the ridiculousness of the world in which we live. Gregg Araki has never failed to push the envelope to an extreme that sickens most people, sometimes especially the people who like his films. And I have to say...I LIKE this film. "Nowhere," for all of its colorful characters, and its unique penchant for not showing real life, but showing life through the eyes and perceptions of some really screwed up teenagers is a courageous endeavor for any writer/director, particularly one who hasn't been a teenager for two decades. I mean, Araki is in his '40's (I think), and somehow he has done what practically every other adult in the world hasn't...he hasn't forgotten what it's like to be a disgruntled, confused, self-destructive teenager on a drug trip. It shows in his writing. The plot follows the events of a day in the life of these L.A. teenagers, which ranges from typical relationship issues (interesting to note is that almost every character in this movie is bi- or homo-sexual, an issue that pops up in almost every Araki film), drug addictions, suicides, car-jacking from local skinhead gangbangers, muscle-bound drag queens, and even a few alien abductions. Sounds like a regular day to me. The script is so campy that it's actually unnoticeable that these people are using words like "gnarly" and "radical," (among other colorful composite words and metaphors) years after that language went out of style...or maybe it hasn't...it is L.A. and I've only been there once. Some philosophies thrown in either from the main character, or from the Teen Idol, or from the televangelist also add to the pathetic existentialist message this film sarcastically conveys, yet it also makes fun of those messages, just out of the film's sheer anarchic idiocy. It's actually humorous that the film can mock these messages and still get them across. Even the characters' names are pretty silly. Dark, Moses Helper, Cowboy, Lucifer, Egg, Ducky, Ski, Zero, Handjob, Jujyfruit, etc...but like the language, the names go unnoticed. Araki's direction and his script somehow derive a great deal of strength from its weaknesses. It's a film that's so bad that it actually becomes good because of it. However, this film is not for everybody. The eroticism of the film is bound to offend and annoy, ranging from interracial, bi- and homo-sexual, masturbation, piercings, bondage, and rape. While some of it is shown in a somewhat "normal" fashion, there is a splendid level of depravity surrounding these situations, and yet it is also important to note the level of nudity is kept very minimal. "Whatev..." I think this movie is innovative and has a level of genius behind it. Not for everyone, but certainly for people who need a kickstart in the chokehold that is life. I also recommend the two previous films "All F**ked Up," and "The Doom Generation," both of which are even harder to watch than this one (hey, both had to have material cut to achieve an "R" rating...that says it all).

Best movie ever ever ever ever
ok first of all the people that rated this movie low are probly hicks for south werever or nerds that never get out. This movie hits right at home here in cailiforia. this movie is so great on so many levels. with lots of hidden meanings. even the alien him self is a hidden meaning. i think over all i still dont get this movie . even I have seen about 6 times. this movie deals with struggling teens dark or(james duval)just wants to be loved. people have to rember when this movie was made and how many rules it acutaly broke. it took alot of guts for gregg araki to do what he did in this movie...people !don't take this movie so seriously... after all it is a inde film. it does have messages. I don't even know why I saw this movie. The Doom Generation is, in my opinion, the worst movie ever made (and I'm not the only one who believes this I can assure you). so why did I see Nowhere? Well I figuired that a director couldn't get it so completely wrong more than once. I was wrong. I'm trying hard to figuire out why so many people like this movie, it has so many scenes that are put in for shock factor that are just stupid. I really don't want to see a guys nipples ripped off. Oh, by the way this movie doesn't say anything about teenagers, I should know, I STILL AM ONE!. Yes I am 17 and I have never felt or experienced half of the things seen in this movie. So many adults want to make their teen years seem so dramatic that I think that some of them acctually believe that they really were like that. If you really want to see a good movie about growing up and the hell that it can be go check out KIDS. now that is a wake up call of a movie.

Let's get this straight: Drew Barrymore started a production company to develop original scripts outside of Hollywood and the first project she chose to produce was this, a romantic comedy written by USC grads Abby Kohn and Mark Silverstein about a nerdy, virginal woman who returns to high school as an undercover reporter, finally gets to be popular, and falls in love. And Barrymore decided, as producer, that the perfect actress to play this virtuous, clean-cut, and downright annoying geek would be... Drew Barrymore? It's hard to believe that after The Wedding Singer Barrymore's not getting enough dopey, formulaic, predictable romantic comedies coming across her desk. The complete inability to buy Barrymore as unattractive, awkward, and unpopular ruins Never Been Kissed from the start, but it's doubtful a better actress could have saved it. The jokes fall flat, the romance between Barrymore and her English teacher (played by Michael Vartan) lacks chemistry, and the portrayals of high school and the newspaper newsroom is clichéd and uninspired (big surprise here: the director, Raja Gosnell, previously made Home Alone 3). More teen cliches
Considering the number of 5 star reviews here, and the standard throwaway "Best movie I've ever seen in my life! " outbursts, I know not to rent a movie based on most of the stuff written here. In fairness, I'm sure alot the reviews here were written by teens, and I might have liked Never Been Kissed if I was a teen myself. But I'm in my late 20's now and seeing the same old teen cliches is tiresome. The dialogue in this movie was clunky, with rarely a funny sentence spoken by any of the characters. I've always liked Drew Barrymore, her sweetness comes across as genuine, and she was pretty likeable in this movie and fun to watch as well. But the intended message in this movie was this, if you're born ugly you're not worth a damn because did you notice how better-looking Drew became as the movie progressed? This coincided with her growing popularity with the other students. In real life, Drew isn't ugly, and neither was her outcasted "geeky" friend who was supposed to be unattractive as well. Other cliches: the young good-looking heartthrob teacher, the dumb jock, the three inseperable shallow bimbos who get what they deserve in the end (shocking), aren't these same three girls in every teen movie? The black guy with nothing but bad one-liners, and of course the embarrasing final scene where the "positive message" speech which is spooned down your throat like barium before a stomach x-ray. I happened to see Carrie on TV a few days after this, and it's shocking how much better that movie is. (similar elements but obviously more effective).

Wonderful!!
First of all, I must say that I was shocked and appalled when I read the official Amazon review for this movie. Never Been Kissed is one of my all time favorite movies, and I cannot imagine anyone saying such nonsense about such a great movie. I thought Drew Barrymore was excellent as Josie Gellar and totally believable as a geeky copy editor whose first real assignment as a reporter is to go back to high school. Once there, Josie quickly realizes that her second high school experience is not going much better than the first. However, she is helped on her quest to popularity by her brother, Rob, convincingly played by David Arquette. Once she has finally been accepted by the "cool" crowd, Josie realizes that there are more important things than being popular, such as her totally hot English teacher, played by Michael Vartan, whom she has fallen in love with. I must say that if I had an English teacher that looked like that when I went to high school, I might have made it to class more! All in all, Never Been Kissed is a wonderful movie about a woman finding success, love and happiness. Excellent!!

Drew Barrymore is hilarious

I love it!!!
I loved this movie! (And its not just because I related Barymore's character.) I found it funny and touching at the same time. The plot was pretty original, the humor was great, and it left me feeling good. And, even though I can predict how almost all movies will end, they managed to throw in bit of temporary doubt at the last momment. Before this movie "Drew Barrymore" was just a name I had heard somewhere, afterward I not only knew who she was but came to respect her as an actress.

an okay movie at best
sure this movie was cute, but it must have been one of the dumbest films I've ever seen. David Arquette is the best thing about it. that's a little sad. Wow the cool kids and the uncool nerds...there are more people in the school than those types of people. Good scary fun
I'm surprised to see so many reviews that hated this movie considering the fact that over here in the UK, Cabin Fever was pretty well received. Okay, so the story's an old staple - a group of kids rent out a cabin in the woods only to find a zombie-like infection as scary as the locals is waiting to ensnare them.

Director Eli Roth clearly knows his horror movies, because this movie plunders a lot of them. The only real problem is that he doesn't really know what direction he wants to take with it - campy fun, retro Evil Dead pastiche or straight horror. There are elements of all three, used to varying degrees of success. I was recommended the movie by quite a few Evil Dead enthusiasts, so it would appear to work on that level. As straight horror there are some genuinely horrible moments, notably a character shaving her legs in the bath deserves to be an instant gore classic. However, a lot of this seems to be undermined by the black humour of it all, mingling to produce a film nearly as nasty as reality-TV horror My Little Eye, though not as good and certainly not as consistent. For instance, characters such as the stoner at the beginning disappear early on and a walk-on from a hilarious cop on a push bike who like to 'party' is cheapened by a second appearance. Saying that, some of the gags definitely work, especially the anti-racist joke at the end, which had me in stitches. Yet before you've even finished laughing there's a shot of a dead body, making you feel more than a little uncomfortable. Whilst it could be argued that the mixing of modes is daring and interesting (and this IS better than Wrong Turn, which played it entirely straight), it comes across as uncertainty on the part of a director who didn't know what they wanted.

Still, that doesn't mean it doesn't have its moments. It does. The unknown cast are all great value for money, though you suspect that we'll probably never see them again. In particular, the guy at first coded as the jock turning into a fey scaredy-cat is great stuff. There are also enough good moments to suggest that Roth could make a much more consistently good movie in future. Saying that, as zombie movies go, Night Of The Living Dead, Evil Dead and even the recent 28 Days Later, still reign supreme.

a contemporary horror masterpiece, absolutely brilliant!!
Wow, I was really surprised to see that this movie got bad reviews from some people. In my opinion this film is nothing short of a classic! I absolutely loved it! I had always had an itch to rent this film, since I am a huge horror fan and since it had received such enthusiastic reviews from movie critics (which is rare for horror films), but being the geek that I am, I sometimes do a little background research before renting a movie. This often includes consulting with the Amazon crowd to get a general idea of what the public consensus is before heading to the video store. Consequently, I kept passing up this film due to one too many negative reviews.

Well, I finally decided to give a shot, and I have to say this is by far and away one of the best horror movies I have ever seen! Ok...if you are not a fan of the horror genre, chances are you are not going to appreciate this film. But for genuine horror fans, I think that most will agree that it doesn't get much better than this. Everything about this film works-the cinematography is extraordinary, the special effects are brilliantly gruesome, and the musical score creates a tension that is beyond anything I have ever experienced during a movie (if you watch it a second time pay careful attention to the music and you will understand why this movie causes so much tension). The acting performances are above average for a horror film, and the dialogue is unforced and natural. One of the major flaws in horror movies is that bad acting and unnatural dialogue are distracting and prevent the audience from getting involved with the film. The characters in this film are believable, which is more than you can ask for in this genre.

I get so bored with some horror movies, and my mind starts to wander away and think about work or making a pastrami sandwich. But Cabin Fever sucked me in...big time. When a movie can draw you in and make you experience what the characters are experiencing--than it is successful. Overall, I would say that this film is a contemporary horror masterpiece. A sadly well intentioned failure
Five teenagers, freshly graduated from college, decide to rush off to a cabin in the woods that they rented to party and celebrate their graduation. Ostensibly they rented the cabin from someone, which should mean that there's a line of communication available to them later in the film when they desperately need it, but apparently there isn't.

So it's a horror film, and with these kids in the cabin we should be expecting a clone of Jason Voorhees or some clone to come crash the party and kill them all, right? Wrong. The culprit is a flesh eating virus, and eventually "culprit" becomes plural as they turn against themselves and others. The movie gets a small nod for an intriguing approach (flesh eating virus instead of Jason clone), but no marks beyond that.

Saddest to see was that the Director/Writer Eli Roth and the entire cast took this film seriously. The dialogue was unrealistic and laughable at times, and each scene appeared either more improbable or ridiculous than the one before. The surviving characters also gained an interesting quality that most characters shouldn't gain in a film that strives to take itself seriously: stupidity. Yes, they get dumber. Their collective and individual responses to stress and difficult situations actually get worse as the movie progresses. In whatever art form that aims to take itself seriously - be it writing a book or making a film - characters are supposed to grow, to learn. With one exception, these characters start with a brain, and end with a mostly empty cranium. The one exception is a character that begins with an empty cranium. Surprisingly, he alone experiences a small amount of growth. But it doesn't matter, because it's too small and irrelevant.

There's a frustrating dearth of good horror films. There's no shortage of horror movies that began with an imbecilic notion and carry it through to an imbecilic end. To me there is little more frustrating than a well intentioned horror film with a unique and fresh approach that gets it all wrong.

This could have been one of the few good ones. Instead it turned out to be a parody of itself. As the movie came to conclusion, I really wasn't sure whether or not I was supposed to be laughing along with the film or at it - but one thing I was sure of is that I was laughing. Being unsure of how I was supposed to respond to the movie was the only reason I watched the special features on the DVD, and I learned, sadly, that I was not supposed to be laughing along with the film.

Too bad. It is Eli Roth's debut as a writer/director. If you're true and honest to your craft you grow as you practice it. Perhaps future endeavors will be better.

Not too bad for a B flick
I finally watched this movie after 4 months of sitting on my shelf.
The beginning plot was pretty good. Typical young, pretty people on their way to a secluded cabin for a good partying time after graduation from college.
A lot of swearing, but hey, they're young adults.
If you like pretty good special gore effects, this is okay.
But the plot becomes so obvious and the ending is really bad.
Total carnage and yet it continues.
Buy it used but read the sellers profile. Mine was wrapped as new but when I popped the VHS in, it was at the end of the credits. So beware.

Best horror movie ever made? Well....no, but close.
I have never reviewed anything prior to this, but I feel as if it is my civic duty to offer a rebuttal to the unwarranted slew of negative criticism that this movie has received by what appears to be the majority of Amazon reviewers. Now, I don't presume to be a movie critic by any measure of the term, but I think that there is a good reason that Peter Jackson and countless other movie critics have endorsed this movie--it is fun and absolutely riveting in the way only a well made horror flick can be. Sure it's gory, but in a much more creative and stylish manner than your typical teenage slasher. Having watched many a horror film, my response tends to be relatively impassive when a masked villain stabs some hapless teenage victim; but seeing that infected woman in the bathtub shaving her legs and crying as she took off layers of decaying flesh had me clenching my teeth, tightening the muscles in my neck, and curling my toes. I agree with the critic who asserted that "The Ring", "Wrong Turn", and "28 Days Later" are some of the better horror movies to have come out of Hollywood in a while, but I would add this one, along with "Dawn of the Dead", to the list as well. Alyssa Milano! Mostly Nude!
If you're looking for a plot, good acting, thrilling action sequences, characters that you can care about, a good script, or a memorable movie experience, then you're looking at the wrong movie. However, if you're looking for a softcore porn movie starring Alyssa Milano's bare breasts, you're looking at the right movie.

Alyssa Milano gets naked. You see her nipples with amazing frequency. She lets guys touch her in dream sequences. She lets a female photographer touch her, remove most of her clothing, and then kiss her. But beware, Lesbian Sex Scene seekers - Alyssa does not go further than kissing. Yes, that's right - she loses her nerve and runs out of the room. Taking the time to get dressed again, unfortunately.

So if you're a fan of Alyssa Milano's breasts, then by all means rent this movie. Or buy it. It's worth it if you enjoy seeing her bare, heaving bosom. However, if you like movies that you can watch all the way through without saying "God, Hollywood will produce ANYTHING!", then this movie is not for you.

Intriguing Vampire movie with Alyssa Milano!
Alyssa Milano is so beautiful in this movie. She is by far the one of the most stunning actresses today.It is unfortunate that this is the type of movie that she did to resurrect her career, but overall it's not half bad. It is very dark,sensual, and intriguing, and Alyssa plays Chartlotte, a virginal freshman who dreams of a vampire who seduces her in her dreams. the film is beautifully shot with semi-convincing performances from the attractive cast which includes Rachel True, Jennifer Tilly, Charlotte Lewis, and Harrison Pruett. Alyssa does what she can with the weak material and overtakes the movie... Main problem is the vampire himself. Martin Kemp does well as the vamp, but I cannot for the life of me understand what the attraction to him would be. He is not mysterious and daring looking. He is quite unattractive. I would have pictured more of a Brad Pitt/Tom Cruies type vampire. It would have been more convincing Charlottes obsession for him. This movie is soft core porn, but it is more than that. An interesting, sensual look, at how our dreams can sometimes take over our lives.

What was she thinking?
Oh yeah. No one would hire her so she needed to lose the good girl image. Thanks, it worked and now she is working, also.

Just for Alyssa...
This is one of the worst films I've ever seen in my life. But, wait a minute... Alyssa is naked and her breasts are just amazing. I have to admit that I loved Alyssa since the moment I saw her for the first time, so if you are a very fan of Alyssa and you are not interested in a good movie, this one is for you...

Low budget soft porn
Despite this movie's title, it's not even close to being a horror flick. This is a very low budget made-for-cable style soft porn with a rather random vampire element thrown in to make it seem more legit. The main reason for movie was made was to show Alyssa Milano nakkid.

The acting and casting are terrible. Alyssa doesn't do too badly, but doesn't really have all that many lines. She's mostly expected to look like she's enjoying the erotic scenes, then look confused in all of the other scenes. The best scene in the movie is Milano's encounter with the photographer.

There's a lot of cheesy, annoying voiceover by the vampire to substitute for plot, story and character development. His acting is the worst in the movie.

Overall, the only reason to see this movie is to see Milano nude. Other than that, there is nothing else compelling about this film. ... Read more

One of the funniest satires I've ever seen
If you want to see one of the best, maybe the best, satire on the media (maybe topping even "Network"?), then this movie is for you. Don't miss it. I swear, a number of times I laughed so hard I cried.

Well done satire. Intelligent and engaging.
Kingsly and Byrne are excellent in this biting satire that often turns to black comedy in an excellent commentary on modern high-powered wheeling and dealing in the corporate world. Twists and turns galore in a tightly woven plot that promises and delivers surprise after surprise in a wonderfuly written plot. Equally engaging is the sub-plot of Mr. and Mrs. anyone caught up in the aftermath of the duel between two media mogules (hence the title).

An intelligent and engaging well writen movie for those who like to think about and be caught up in their entertainment. ... Read more

The plot was pretty original, the humor was great, and it left me feeling good. And, even though I can predict how almost all movies will end, they managed to throw in bit of temporary doubt at the last momment. Alyssa Milano! Mostly Nude!
If you're looking for a plot, good acting, thrilling action sequences, characters that you can care about, a good script, or a memorable movie experience, then you're looking at the wrong movie. However, if you're looking for a softcore porn movie starring Alyssa Milano's bare breasts, you're looking at the right movie.

Alyssa Milano gets naked. You see her nipples with amazing frequency. She lets guys touch her in dream sequences. She lets a female photographer touch her, remove most of her clothing, and then kiss her. But beware, Lesbian Sex Scene seekers - Alyssa does not go further than kissing. Yes, that's right - she loses her nerve and runs out of the room. Taking the time to get dressed again, unfortunately.

So if you're a fan of Alyssa Milano's breasts, then by all means rent this movie. Or buy it. It's worth it if you enjoy seeing her bare, heaving bosom. However, if you like movies that you can watch all the way through without saying "God, Hollywood will produce ANYTHING!", then this movie is not for you.

Intriguing Vampire movie with Alyssa Milano!
Alyssa Milano is so beautiful in this movie. She is by far the one of the most stunning actresses today.It is unfortunate that this is the type of movie that she did to resurrect her career, but overall it's not half bad. It is very dark,sensual, and intriguing, and Alyssa plays Chartlotte, a virginal freshman who dreams of a vampire who seduces her in her dreams. the film is beautifully shot with semi-convincing performances from the attractive cast which includes Rachel True, Jennifer Tilly, Charlotte Lewis, and Harrison Pruett. Alyssa does what she can with the weak material and overtakes the movie... Main problem is the vampire himself. Martin Kemp does well as the vamp, but I cannot for the life of me understand what the attraction to him would be. He is not mysterious and daring looking. He is quite unattractive. I would have pictured more of a Brad Pitt/Tom Cruies type vampire. It would have been more convincing Charlottes obsession for him. This movie is soft core porn, but it is more than that. An interesting, sensual look, at how our dreams can sometimes take over our lives.

What was she thinking?
Oh yeah. No one would hire her so she needed to lose the good girl image. Thanks, it worked and now she is working, also.

Just for Alyssa...
This is one of the worst films I've ever seen in my life. But, wait a minute... Alyssa is naked and her breasts are just amazing. I have to admit that I loved Alyssa since the moment I saw her for the first time, so if you are a very fan of Alyssa and you are not interested in a good movie, this one is for you...

Low budget soft porn
Despite this movie's title, it's not even close to being a horror flick. This is a very low budget made-for-cable style soft porn with a rather random vampire element thrown in to make it seem more legit. The main reason for movie was made was to show Alyssa Milano nakkid.

The acting and casting are terrible. Alyssa doesn't do too badly, but doesn't really have all that many lines. She's mostly expected to look like she's enjoying the erotic scenes, then look confused in all of the other scenes. The best scene in the movie is Milano's encounter with the photographer.

There's a lot of cheesy, annoying voiceover by the vampire to substitute for plot, story and character development. His acting is the worst in the movie.

Overall, the only reason to see this movie is to see Milano nude. Other than that, there is nothing else compelling about this film. ... Read more

Great creepy suspense!!
OK, so everyone hates Ted McGinley's character in this movie. But he did a great job with the role. McGinley plays Mitch Carson, a sick, perverted, creepy wierdo who lures teenage girls over the internet from their homes to his hideout where he holds them against their will and actually offers them for sale over the internet. The 16 year old girl in this movie is Martha, a lonely and troubled teen who is the latest to fall victim to Carson. Ted McGinley from first glance in this movie appears as a very normal guy. He dresses nicely, talks to Martha nicely when he picks her up from his buddy Drew, whom Martha was first lured to. "Hi Martha" McGinley sais, "I'm Mitch Carson, I'm just another computer geek who works for an organization which helps kids in trouble get back home and away from guys like Drew." "Can I call my mom?" Martha asks him. "Sure", Carson(McGinley) sais, smiling all innocent to her, "you can use the cell in my truck." Well, the nice guy routine works, into his truck she goes. But the cell phone is dead, and with more and more sweet talking, Martha and Mitch carson are off to his hideout, which Martha is totally unsuspecting of. She thinks Carson is taking her to meet her parents somewhere. The suspense really, really builds about 45 minutes into the movie, and does it ever get cree-eeepy!! It's not a movie for everyone, but if you're in the mood for a creepy, suspenseful thriller this is it!! I think it's also a true story which makes it even more chilling. Martha's mother, played by Cheryl Ladd, you will enjoy watching as well, as she is very attractive and does a great job as playing a mother who is about to have a breakdown if she doesn't find her daughter. Another movie I recommend, although I don't think it's on VHS or DVD is a Lifetime Original movie titled, "Video Voyeur: The Susan Wilson Story", starring Angie Harmon. As you guessed, it comes on Lifetime from time to time.

I found this movie to be very informative. You never know who you could be talking to on the other end, and this is one time you are not safe even in your own home. After watching this movie, you may never want to go into a chat room again!

"Stand-In's" stink!
Stagy, contrived and utterly pretentious production about famous 30's actress stand-ins who congregate at a drearily elegant bar, their only thing in common being the same profession. These women are an assortment of the disillusioned and the daydreamy, or a combination of both, encountering difficulty knowing who they are since they're always "standing in somebody's shadow" and sometimes are in danger of losing their identity as they take on the persona of their famous counterparts. The only non stand-in is bartender Jack Turner (Costas Mandylor), an aspiring dancer who spends most of his time breaking into twirls like a human top, and gazing in the mirror as he runs his fingers through his hair. The rest of the gang consists of Daphne Zuniga as Shirley, Garbo's stand-in, Monica (Jordan Ladd) for Bette Davis, Peggy (Charlotte Chatton) for Mae West, Rhonda (Missy Gordon) for Dietrich, and Martha-Anne (Sammi Davis) doubles for Harlow. Talk about crackpot casting! None of these actresses bears the slightest resemblance to her famous counterpart, a fact which is hard to overlook--except perhaps Davis, but unfortunately she looks more like a drag queen parody of the Platinum Blonde! The movie opens dramatically with a grainy B&W apocraphal recreation of the tragically true event of failed starlet Peg Entwistle's sensationalized suicide off the HOLLYWOOD sign in 1932. Fast forward to 1937, when the stand-in's wait for Martha-Anne to show up for her 32nd birthday party. While waiting, junkie Shirley shoots up some dope, then engages in a spirited tiff with Monica as to who deserved the 1935 Oscar more (Garbo or Davis?) and taking it personally as if they were those stars themselves instead of just their stand-ins, and Peggy relates a pathetic tale of how proud she was to sign autographs when taken for Mae West. The rest of the time they spend dancing, engaging in industry gossip and insulting one another. To show how creative and artistic (wacky in my view) these characters are, the script has them blurting verses from Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" as well as inane poems throughout the film. Then Rhonda shows up with the weirdly named Taffy, Rita Hayworth's 19-year old stand-in. Katherine Heigl plays her and ends up stealing the show with her subtle internalized characterization consisitng of scheming determination and lost vulnerability, and though she's too babyfaced and wholesome to be a deadringer for the sultry star, she bears an effective resemblance and in some lighting and camera angles looks uncannily like Hayworth.

When Martha-Anne finally arrives for her party she steps in the bar just as Harlow's death is announced on the radio, and her distraught emotional state is further rattled by Taffy's devious plans to backstab Martha-Anne so she can become Harlow's double in the actress' unfinished picture, which she hopes will get her some publicity and notice. By underestimating Martha-Anne's anger over using Harlow's death as a golden opportunity and stepping stone as well as her love and devotion for her dead "boss," this turns out to be a fatal move for Taffy, a duplicitous character but ultimately sympathetic since there are tragic filial motivations for her desperate need to succeed and not become another Peg Entwistle. Besides the stagey feel, miscasting, and uninspiring dialogue, the other big drawbacks for the chronologically, historically correct are these--Martha-Anne first hears of Harlow's illness and death on the radio after she's just finished doubling for the "healthy" star, but in reality Harlow was gravely ill days before her eventual death and Martha-Anne thus would have been in professional "limbo" during this time. The other drawback is including Hayworth as a 30's star--while she was acting at the time, she was just a starlet and didn't become a full-fledged star until the 40's, therefore a lowly contract player wouldn't have rated a stand-in. I'm not trying to be nitpicky here, but these things are distractingly obvious to any classic film buff and the writers' should know better, but I'm afraid they counted too much on the audiences' ignorance.

Thoroughly entertaining, superbly produced, memorable film.
Stand-Ins is about six young women, each of whom is a 1937 era Hollywood studio employee who, because of their physical resemblance, takes the place of a famous actress (Rita Hayworth, Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow) and "stands in" on the film set when directors want to check lighting, camera angels, etc. and don't wish to tire out their stars for such mundane technical production steps in the making of their movies. The setting is a local bar where the six women gather together with the bar tender to celebrate the birthday of a seventh member of their little club of fellow stand-ins. Fascinating character developments with startlingly and intimate revelations throughout the afternoon, a sudden and surprising crisis, all are backgrounded with informative behind-the-scenes movie making insights. Stand-Ins is thoroughly entertaining, superbly produced, memorable enacted film that will enhance any community library video movie collection.

Must stop drooling now....

One of the funniest satires I've ever seen
If you want to see one of the best, maybe the best, satire on the media (maybe topping even "Network"?), then this movie is for you. Don't miss it. I swear, a number of times I laughed so hard I cried.

Well done satire. Intelligent and engaging.
Kingsly and Byrne are excellent in this biting satire that often turns to black comedy in an excellent commentary on modern high-powered wheeling and dealing in the corporate world. Twists and turns galore in a tightly woven plot that promises and delivers surprise after surprise in a wonderfuly written plot. Equally engaging is the sub-plot of Mr. and Mrs. anyone caught up in the aftermath of the duel between two media mogules (hence the title).

An intelligent and engaging well writen movie for those who like to think about and be caught up in their entertainment. ... Read more

More teen cliches
Considering the number of 5 star reviews here, and the standard throwaway "Best movie I've ever seen in my life! " outbursts, I know not to rent a movie based on most of the stuff written here. In fairness, I'm sure alot the reviews here were written by teens, and I might have liked Never Been Kissed if I was a teen myself. But I'm in my late 20's now and seeing the same old teen cliches is tiresome. The dialogue in this movie was clunky, with rarely a funny sentence spoken by any of the characters. I've always liked Drew Barrymore, her sweetness comes across as genuine, and she was pretty likeable in this movie and fun to watch as well. But the intended message in this movie was this, if you're born ugly you're not worth a damn because did you notice how better-looking Drew became as the movie progressed? This coincided with her growing popularity with the other students. In real life, Drew isn't ugly, and neither was her outcasted "geeky" friend who was supposed to be unattractive as well. Other cliches: the young good-looking heartthrob teacher, the dumb jock, the three inseperable shallow bimbos who get what they deserve in the end (shocking), aren't these same three girls in every teen movie? The black guy with nothing but bad one-liners, and of course the embarrasing final scene where the "positive message" speech which is spooned down your throat like barium before a stomach x-ray. I happened to see Carrie on TV a few days after this, and it's shocking how much better that movie is. (similar elements but obviously more effective).

First of all, I must say that I was shocked and appalled when I read the official Amazon review for this movie. Never Been Kissed is one of my all time favorite movies, and I cannot imagine anyone saying such nonsense about such a great movie. I thought Drew Barrymore was excellent as Josie Gellar and totally believable as a geeky copy editor whose first real assignment as a reporter is to go back to high school. Once there, Josie quickly realizes that her second high school experience is not going much better than the first. However, she is helped on her quest to popularity by her brother, Rob, convincingly played by David Arquette. Once she has finally been accepted by the "cool" crowd, Josie realizes that there are more important things than being popular, such as her totally hot English teacher, played by Michael Vartan, whom she has fallen in love with. I must say that if I had an English teacher that looked like that when I went to high school, I might have made it to class more! All in all, Never Been Kissed is a wonderful movie about a woman finding success, love and happiness. Excellent!!

The movie Mystery Men should have been!
Not as good as regular superheroes, but definitely better than you! The Specials, comprised of the sixth or seventh greatest superhero team in the world, need to improve their image. Unfortunately, they spend more time bickering about love affairs, finances and publicity, then they do catching Super Villains. However, The Specials' luck may soon change The Weevil (Rob Lowe), The Strobe (Thomas Hadden Church), Amok (Jamie Kennedy) and the rest of the The Specials hope to gain immortality with their own line of action figures...the superhero equivalent of an Academy Award.

I briefly heard about this movie late last year in radio promos. Even then it had sounded interesting. However, when it opened in Manhattan I was sure it would come to my town, but then it was gone. I felt cheated and rightfully so. This is a damn good movie. Now I have to warn you this is not an action movie, there is now spectacular effects, it is about these people, these superheroes lives. Having said that, the movie is a marvel of independant film making. The script shines and the characters remain true to themselves as they would in any good drama, and this, for all intents and purposes is a superhero drama. I found myself enjoying these character's company, and wondered what their lives would be like after the film faded to black. If you are a fan of any of the actor's or if you even remotely like comic books you must check this movie out.

I know what you are saying, been there done that with Mystery Men, That movie left me very disappointed, this one made up for that disappointment.

The Special's is a direct to video gem!!!!
I'm a big fan of comic books and being a fan usually means that I watch every super hero movie to come out of the woodworks. They usually range from great (Batman, Rocketeer, & X-men) to not so great (Batman & Robin, Captain America, & Spawn). I picked up the Specials without hearing anything about it and only seeing one preview. What a pleasant surprise this movie is, and funny as hell too. The Specials is about the 6th or 7th biggest super hero team and how they deal with only fighting bad guys about 10 times a year. The film deals with each member of the team and all their bickering that encompasses being one of the specials. As the film progresses the team is targeted by a toy company that wants to create action figures of them. The movie is very low budget so there is no huge super hero battles but this movie is not about that. The Specials although not as good as Mystery men could easily stand as a good companion piece to this equally great movie . Thomas Haden Church, Rob Lowe, & Jamie Kennedy throw in great performances as these twisted heros. I can only imagine that this movie was buried because of the dismal box office grosses of Mystery Men. If your a fan of the Tick or you always wondered what super heros do when their not fighting crime pick this movie up and watch it but make sure you keep the restraints of the budget in mind and you'll be pleasantly surprised like I was.

Best Thomas Haden Church Movie --- EVER!
For anybody just becoming a fan of Thomas Haden Church, I'd advise you to see this movie.
This is Thomas at his best (also, it was before his brunette period! - if you don't believe me, see that new episode of "Lucky" called 'The Method' that he was in. He's USUALLY a blonde).
I like almost every character in this movie and there is never a dull moment!
You'll find yourself quoting the scene where they discuss the action figure celebration in the boardroom, which turns into an arguement
about Amok's actions.
The Great Strobe needs his own comic book. Badly. Just as long as Archie Comics and Ken Penders aren't involved.
I have another suggestion to new Thomas Haden Church fans, avoid "Susan's Plan... Dying to Get Rich" and "3000 Miles to Graceland".
Both movies are bad and... I hate that hairdresser chick in SP:DTGR. She's just scary.

going to special school
something that i didnt see in any of the current reviews is a mention that this is kind of a mock-u-mentary. what does that mean??? well, for one it means that the production values are low, likely because of a lack of budget, but i would argue that the production value complements and plays with the nature of the specials, the 6th or 7th greatest super team.

one guy gave this film a 1, wich i do not agree with at all. from reading the review, it seems to me that this person was looking for an 'eye candy' movie, which, usually superhero movies are predisposed to being, but this film is entirely driven by the characters. the movie would have been fine without the 2 min of effects at the end, and i was suprized to see them, they did in fact look better than the production value of the rest of the film suggested, very likely that is where a good hunk of the films budget went.

it is realy tempting to give this movie more than 4, but i dont think it deserves 5.

i am a fan of Thomas Hadden Church, and though this is not one of his best roles, fans of him, or the other actors will like this movie

What a piece of Crap
I picked up the specials looking to see some heroics or comedy or drama. What I got was a load of trash. This film is an uninspired attempt to make a "superhero genre" movie by people who have never seen, read, or heard of a comic book or a cartoon. The characters are abysmal, the dialoge stinks, and it seems the entire "special effects" budget was reserved for the last 2 minutes of the film.I kept waiting for something or anykind of plot to develop. A Great Follow Up to the Greatness that was Super Troopers
First of all, if you went into this thinking this was going to be every bit as comedic as its predecessor, then I might understand why you didn't enjoy this. It was touted for as long as I can remember as "The first HORROR movie from Broken Lizard." And I was very pleasently surprised when there was actually some very cool horror elements at work here. I felt the comedy kept the pacing from dragging in some parts, and really added to the satirical aspect of horror seen after Scream breathed new life into the genre. The result of blending the horror and comedy was a great experience. The introduction of everyone as a suspect getting off the boat was freaking classic! And the very first sex scene, "Well, we can at least go inside that old mausoleum!" BRILLIANT. Kevin Hefernan makes quite a turn-around from his "Love-to-hate-him" character Farva, to play the possibly crazy love interest in Dread. The rest of the supporting cast were fun and quirky, and the parody of Jimmy Buffet was very funny. The scene around the campfire, "From then on he was known as...Machetti...Phil!" Is definately not to be missed. So, if you buy or rent (and i suggest you at least see it), go into it knowing that it was more for horror than comedy. I think you should enjoy it either way, unless you don't have an ounce of entertainable quality in your body. Oh, and the ending is classic 70's horror movie fare. Looking forward to The College Row (I believe that's the title), and Super Troopers 2, providing they find funding (it really sucks to have opened opposite Jesus...it doesn't take a theologian to figure out who was going to win that bout.) Keep it up BL.

Wildly Entertaining, and Not a Spoof!
"Club Dread" was one of the most entertaining, funny, and scary movie that I have seen in a long time. It also kept me guessing, right untill the very end. I found it to be rude, crude, and vicious fun. It is the second film in the comedy troop "Broken Lizard" who made a film about two years ago called "Super Troopers" which I have never seen. I almost gave this movie five stars, but was stopped because of the first scene. I thought that the first scene was a little dull, and after that I was scared that the entire movie would be a waste of time. I was very very wrong. The movie stars Bill Paxton, who I thought was great in this as Coconut Pete, Brittany Daniel from "Joe Dirt," and the leader of Broken Lizard, Jay Chandrasekhar, who played a tennis instructor who thinks that his playing is great.

The movie takes place on Pleasure Island resort in Costa Rica. Run by former former rock star Coconut Pete. He has young people come and have a good time, away from phones, and other technology, and wants his visitors to have a good time with the staffers. The staffers include Putnam, the tennis instructor, Sam, the captain of the "Fun Police" and Jenny, the aerobics instructor who has a reputation of sleeping with many of the staff members. Jenny becomes interested with the new masseur Lars whose has hands like magic, much to the dismay of Putnam. All of the staff members are ready to have fun for the week, untill one of the staff members is killed. More and more start to die, and they are killing people based on the lyrics of Coconut Pete's songs. Pete hired the security guard Hank to help them find out who is killing everybody, as they try and survive the week at the resort, all while suspecting everybody including each other.

"Club Dread" sounds like a spoof, but it is not. It is pure horror/comedy. I thought that it was scarier then recent horror films like "Freddy vs Jason" and "Dawn of the Dead" and I liked how it was hilarious as well. It wasn't to long in the end, and I felt that the entire money was worth the money that it spent. I don't see how it didn't make alot of money, but it will probally do much better when it comes out on video. I thought Bill Paxton was a big highlight as Coconut Pete, and he was hilarious. It has graphic violence, and graphic nudity, but it was still a great film. If it wasn't for the beginning, it would be a five star movie, and mabye one of the best of the year. I am awaiting the next Broken Lizards comedy.

this is a let down from The Broken Lizard crew
Super Troopers did a lot for me and it wasn't a classic but it was funny as hell. Zoom foward to Club Dread which in the complete end of it has stirred away from it's own pot. Broken Lizard gang brewed up a mix of flat jokes, gorey violence and some scantly revealing women. In conclusion if this is your cup of tea then go for it but it's a let down. Bill Paxton (Near Dark, the upcoming Thunderbirds) who plays Coconaut Pete is the only highlight in the movie. Brittney Daniel (tv's That 80's Show, Joe Dirt) plays Aerobics Amy has her moments. It's like a bad hangover.

Club Dreadful
Watching "Club Dread" I found it hard to believe that this movie was made by the same Broken Lizard comedy team that gave the world "Super Troopers."

While the latter film was one of the funniest comedies of the last five years, "Club Dread" is so spectacularly unfunny that it makes you wonder if "Super Troopers" was a fluke.

At its core, "Dread" seems a parody of slasher flicks in general and of "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" in particular. The killer on the loose at a tropical resort plotline is lifted directly from that earlier film.

But the movie fails to elicit even a single chuckle. Part of the problem is that many scenes are way too violent for a comedy. In fact, the killings are generally played straight and are bloody enough to fit right into any modern slasher film. At the same time, all the lame jokes keep things from getting too serious.

The end result is a movie that is schizophrenic in that it seems to want to work as a horror film AND as a comedy. Ultimately, "Club Dread" is too violent to be funny and too much of a wanna-be yukfest to be truly frightening.

In trying to achieve two goals, the movie fails at both.

The performances of actor/director Jay Chandrasekhar and the other members of Broken Lizard lack the anarchic glee and razor sharp wit that made "Super Troopers" a "must see and then see again" classic. Bill Paxton plays an always-sloshed Jimmy Buffet-style singer whose resort is the center of the action. One wonders if he wasn't drunk out of his mind, when he agreed to this role.

I have high hopes for Broken Lizard and hopefully their third film outing will see them on surer footing. As for this movie, a better title would be "Club Dreadful."

One of the best! Great blend of horror and comedy!
This movie is just hilarious at times but then there's also some scary scenes as well. Its mixed perfectly and Broken Lizard did a fabulous job on the movie. Its about people partying on an island but one by one people start getting killed. Nobody knows who the killer is and he's very devious. I thought that it had a good shocking twist at the end to the killer's identity. Brittany Daniel is a georgeous babe in the movie. The jokes are good throughout. The Coconut Pete songs are fun to listen to and have funny lyrics. Get a bunch of friends gathered around to watch this entertaining flick. It will keep you guessing till the end. ... Read more
