5-0 out of 5 stars Geniune reality
I just loved the movie, it I thought the movie was a real outstanding show of the life of a military man, and his love for a girl. I can really identify with it after being a military wife and not knowing what will happen, when your man is called off to go fight a war. It was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must see
This movie is a sleeper, and excellent movie that never got alot of publicity. It is a must have for Viet Nam movie lovers. A great combination of action, love, tragedy, and comedy set in the turmoil of the Viet Nam war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relevant Even Today
While this pic is set during the VietNam war, it is still very relevant today with what is going on in the world. I feel it is an accurate depiction of the horrors of war, the lonliness of the soldiers and nurses and the compassion of the military personnel. Ken Wahl and Cheryl Ladd are excellent as the leads and your heart aches for them when they are apart and then finally reunited. The reunion never fails to bring tears to my eyes. This should be seen by all.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE SECOND CASUALTY OF WAR
If innocence is the first casualty of war, romance is certainly the second. Both are explored in PURPLE HEARTS, Sidney J. Furie's second Vietman installment, 6 years post his classic THE BOYS IN COMPANY C. This could have been the Vietman War chick flick but instead it's a tight drama with solid acting by leads Ken Wahl and Cheryl Ladd, and great support by James Whitmore, Jr. (fantastic as a stoic CIA operative), Stephen Lee and the always great R. Lee Ermey, playing (what else?) a USMC gunnery sergeant. Get this one and BOYS to DVD ASAP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent war romance story
This needs to come out on DVD. This is a fabulous romance story set during the Vietnam War. Highly recommended to those who love action adventure romances. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars an overlooked movie for sci-fi buffs
Millennium is one of those movies that has a great story line and even follows through with budget and special effects (for it's time not bad) yet fails to draw the crowd because it's an intricate story of time travel that can be at times hard to follow and even slow. But if you still dig movies like Logan's Run or Communion, you'll probably enjoy Millennium.

It's a unique story of people far in the future who kidnap the bodies of people that are about to die. Their favorite source is planes that are about to crash. An official investigating discovers wrist-watches running backwards in the wreckage, and works with a physicist attempting to discover the truth about these visitors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Millennium is a thinking man's scifi flick
This movie is actually better than what others might think. But it requires your complete attention, and for a generation of people who are used to in-your-face MTV type short-attention span stuff, then skip this flick. However, I have shown this DVD on several occasions to groups of friends, and everyone enjoyed trying to figure out what was going on, and were surprised as I was, when time - travel was implicated. Cheryl Ladd was quite good as a cynical flight attendant, and Kris Kristofferson was believable as a man burned out on his job. I only with Travanti had more to do. Still, I highly recommend this flick to people who like to think when they watch a scifi flick.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to a Point -- a Twilight Zone story w/o the feel
You've read the "official" review and to be honest, I don't wholly agree or disagree. First, I like both Kristopherson's and Ladd's performances. They fit the characters nicely. The replay of the same sequence from another angle answers all of the questions about what is going on, and is the only thing that turns a rather short, straightforward featurette into a full-length feature.

Conceivably, more time could have been spent investigating the wreckage (and similar wreckages) before revealing the time travelers from the future. Also, why don't they fix these ripples, instead of trying to escape them?

So there are some questions. If I could, I'd give this one 2-1/2 stars, not three, but I won't drop it all the way to two, mostly because no one else has done this exact story, unless it was Rod Serling in the original Twilight Zone series, but I don't think so... there are similar stories, to be sure, and time travel stories, but not in this combination.

Which puts this film into the "Twilight Zone" category for me. There are so many places where they could have made this one better, I have to wonder why no one has done a remake...

Still, it is part of my collection and if you are SF buff, then don't leave this off your list of films to consider without at least watching it.

1-0 out of 5 stars MST3K would have had a field day with this!
This movie is *bad*. The "plot" makes no sense, and the ending even less. It is stupid, slow, insipid, and utterny nonsensical. I wish that MST3K had gotten ahold of this film; only they could have mocked it the way it so desperately deserves to be mocked. This movie is *that bad*.

And it's *boring*, too. Kristoferson and Ladd have absolutely ZERO chemistry. No, in fact, they have NEGATIVE chemistry. Kristoferson couldn't act is way out of this script, and Ladd ... well, jeez, what could one expect from an ex-Charlie's Angel?

It's also *ugly*. The costumes, set designs, and special effects would have been bad in 1989, and haven't aged well. Post-apocolyptic futures can look cool (ROAD WARRIOR) or even funky (12 MONKEYS), but here, it's just lame. And the first "effect" in the film--where two planes collide--is a sad effort of blue-screening that my high-school film club could have outdone.

Avoid at all costs. Waste no money. If your boyfriend or girlfriend owns it, break up with them; it will be less painful.

I have to go sanitize my home theatre now.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a famous film for good reason
How many movies do you know that replay the same scenes and can still hold the interest of the viewer? Not many, if any. However, the creators of Millennium decided that about one third of the movie should be the same scenes. Total failure. This is a case where the makers of the film underestimated the intelligence of the viewers, thinking that going through the movie twice was the only way viewers could keep track of the incredibly difficult concept of time travel.

Then again, if this was truly a good movie than we shouldn't be disappointed in seeing the scenes twice, since we could then enjoy good acting etc. Not so in Millennium. Kris Kristofferson looks grizzly with a heavy beard and has the skin tone of beef jerky. Cheryl Ladd plays opposite of Kristofferson as the time traveling tough women from the future who happens to know nothing about time traveling, she needs a personal robot to explain "the obvious" to her on many occasions. Maybe she forgot to read the script.

In this movie, the future is a place of rust, the present is a place of ignorance, and the viewer is left insulted. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Would Really Like to see it on DVD!!
I didn't read the Danielle Steele Book Changes but I saw this movie that is based on the book and liked it and I'm hoping that it will be transferred to DVD. Cheryl Ladd who I have liked ever since seeing on Charlie's Angels when I was a kid was very good in this movie and so was handsome Michael Nouri and I recommend this movie but think it should be on DVD! I'm also thinking of going to a used book store to look for the book so I can finally read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mother From NJ
This movie had everything in it. Cheryl Ladd made me laugh and cry as a mother of 2 twin girls who meet and falls in love with gorgeous Michael Nouri who is a widower with 3 children. The doctor played by Nouri and the newscaster played by Ladd were the typical couple in the end who had a hard time bringing to families together and then adding in two more.(They had twins in the end)

4-0 out of 5 stars great movie
changes was a great movie.i watched it sevral times and i couldnt get enough of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book, awesome movie!!!
Very heartwarming movie, just like the book, no disappointments what so ever!!! Although the descriptions of the characters differ somewhat in the movie, the movie does not miss a beat and does not take away from the original story. A good movie to curl up on the couch to.

Traverse the globe with Josie and the Pussycats on this 95-minute, four-episode video. First it's off to Hawaii in "The Melody Memory Mix-Up" where the gang must help hide an important force field formula from the Hawk. Melody's memory bank becomes the unlikely vessel for the secret formula, and the group finds itself in a multitude of hair-raising experiences. In "The Great Pussycat Chase," Josie and the Pussycats take possession of a mysterious black box in Paris. The group must elude the Shadow, then find an elusive gargoyle to unearth a list of the Shadow's evil agents worldwide. Melody's innocent quest for a pair of authentic purple clogs lands the group a dangerous assignment in "Never Mind a Mastermind." The group's mission: to prevent the Mastermind from stealing an important antigravity device from a geophysical laboratory in Holland. In "Strangemoon over Miami," Josie and the Pussycats desperately try to stop Dr. Strangemoon's plans to launch a series of satellites that will attract fiery comets to Earth.

Josie and the Pussycats is an early-1970s, animated Hanna-Barbera cartoon series based on the Archie comic book series. Each episode features lots of fast-paced, comedy-filled chase scenes; then-futuristic ideas like minicomputers, artificial force fields, and antigravity devices; and lots of 1970s slang. While the portrayal of Melody as a blond airhead and Alexandra as a conniving, controlling woman may be somewhat offensive to modern audiences, it should be viewed in context as 1970s comic exaggeration. Modern kids ages 5 to 11 and retrospective, adult fans will enjoy these four Josie and the Pussycats episodes. --Tami Horiuchi ... Read more

Fans of the retooled live-action feature film, their old-school forerunners who got funky along with the '70s show that set off the craze, and anybody who never met a Hanna-Barbera creation worth living without ought to pick up Chile Today, Hot Tamale, a bonanza of bad-guy nabbing, R&B-beaded original episodes. First up is the title bit, a south-of-the-border slice of singing and sleuthing in which the evil Scorpion schemes to dominate the world with his weather-control machine; next comes "Spy School Spoof," in which a posse of important-machine-immobilizing goons go head-to-head with the gang at the Grand Canyon. Then comes "The Midas Mix-Up," involving a ski-slope gig that gets interrupted when the Cats stumble onto a gold-destroying microbe mist and its dastardly creators. Finishing up is "The Secret Six Secret," set in Bombay, where Josie, Melody, and company trample a troupe of would-be terrorists. Mostly it's the swingin' sounds that let Josie claim a spot next to sister series Scooby-Doo in the pantheon of '70s cartoon classics, but also good fun are the goofball shenanigans of banned-from-the-band Alexandra, who's forever foiled in her efforts to lure hunky Alan, and the mic, away from the girl-group's likable lead singer. Besides that, there's a litter box full of kittenish kitsch to appreciate here, including the theme song, with its hummable refrain about long tails and ears for hats and the problem of never having enough time for purrs and pats. --Tammy La Gorce ... 1-0 out of 5 stars What kind of ending is that?
whoever thought that the ending of this movie was close to appropriate needs to think about the story. The BEST part of this book was when Aaron and Mary finally get together and he gets to claim his daughter. I was so angry about the ending here that it ruined to rest of the movie(which was sort of enjoyable). i came into watching this movie honestly not expecting much(i usually dont w/TV movies based on books), and still i managed to be terribly disappointed. they should have ended it the right way, instead of leaving us with a feeling of these two people still empty... the movie and book are called FULFILLMENT....learn how to depict it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The movie left out the best part of the book. The ending where Mary and Jonathan finally get together after Aaron's death. In the movie Jonathan leaves and Mary raises their daughter alone, never telling her that Jonathan is really her father, not her uncle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Based on a novel by Laveryl Spencer
I am a huge Spencer fan. I found the movie to follow along with the book right up until the end. The ending was far different from that of the book, and I was very disapointed in the change. I also feel that the movie would loose all appeal to someone who had not read and loved the novel. Most of its appeal to me was seeing how the characters I already knew and loved were depicted on screen. There was really no pleasure in the film past that. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Romance on the Orient Express
A chick flick, except that Cheryl Ladd is gorgeous (which may appeal to men). If you've ever had bad luck in your love life, you'll certainly identify with this movie and may even enjoy it. Alex is a handsome but silly college boy who falls head-over-heels for the lovely and intelligent (and equally young) Lily (played by Cheryl Ladd) while they're travelling on a train in southern France. A romance ensues that promises to be everything any woman could wish for. Unbeknownst to Lily, Alex is already engaged and is unable to back out of that commitment. He disappears, leaving her bewildered, humiliated and pregnant. Years later, on another train trip through France, they meet again. Only this time she's not likely to fall for his charms...or is she? Cheryl's acting is not the greatest at times, but the storyline is quite believable to any woman who has fallen in love with the wrong man. It's comforting to see that romance isn't so easy for the very beautiful among us either...too bad it's fiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet!! Yet beautifull.
Cheryl Ladd and Stuart Wilson are so believable as lovers who seemed to have been seperated by fate, and then are given a second chance if only they could be honest with each other. I hope they rerelease this movie I love watching it on a rainy afternoon. If you want to watch a movie that convince you that love it worth fighting for get this movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet love story for the romantic at heart.
It has been some time since I've seen this movie -- I was disappointed to find it unavailable. As I recall, the chemistry between Cheryl Ladd and Stuart Wilson made the story believable. Today Wilson seems to prefer to play the villain, but he does have some appeal as a leading man. The movie captured the essence of bittersweet romance. It's pleasant to think there might be a second chance for lovers who screwed up the first time around -- even if it only happens in the movies. Romance on the Orient Express is the perfect movie for a rainy Saturday afternoon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Find Romance in Europe and never leave your living room!!
This movie is just a nice feel good romance! It has it a good story line, that makes you want to back pack across Europe. It is filled with action, romance, and a secret, so big, that it could ruin the reunion of long lost love. The characters explode on screen and you won't have a dry eye after that last seen. You can't buy it right now but diffinatly Rent this one!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sara Gilbert & Drew Barrymore Shine...
I rented this movie mainly 'cos I was looking for some Drew Barrymore films. Somehow, I found this one in the drama section. I thought I'd like it, and I was right. This movie first starts off with Sylvie writing about 'Ivy' in her journal. Sylvie wishes they could be friends, because she doesn't have any friend. So Ivy & Sylvie become friends, and Ivy begins basically living with Sylvie and her family. Sylvie's mom is really sick, and throughout the entire movie, you can tell Ivy is trying to take the mother's place. Ivy obviously didn't have anyone that cared about her, and she wanted to be in a family really bad. If I tell you anymore, it'll ruin the movie. In my opinion, the movie was great, and Drew Barrymore and Sara Gilbert made it a very great film. They really know how to act! So if you're looking for a good movie or two to watch & you found this one somehow on this site, rent it or buy it, because it is a great movie if you like Drew or Sara. Hope you enjoy it. =)

5-0 out of 5 stars great movie!
Poison Ivy is a great movie, starring a great cast of Drew Barrymore, Sara Gilbert, Tom Skerritt and Cheryl Ladd. It's about a young girl named Ivy who doesn't have much, who meets a friend who has 'everything'. Ivy does her best to fit in with the family... END

5-0 out of 5 stars Little miss naughty. 15th april 2004.
She hasn't got hardly any friends, until she starts chating up a girl the similar age as her, who also hasn't got many friends either. Her best friend as a perfect mother and father until she decides to fall in love with the girls father and starts kissing him. Her mother is ill, she as wanted to kill herself many of times. She is a bad person but the girl dosent realise that until later on when she finds her with her dad, and also pushes her mother out of window. SHE WAS THE PERFECT FRIEND.

4-0 out of 5 stars Purely vampy
...Drew Barrymore and Sara Gilbert heat up the screen in this vampy homoerotic thriller. Drew Barrymore plays the Lolita-esque Ivy, who will apparently stop at nothing to .... well, it's not that clear what Ivy wants exactly, only that she's willing to seduce quite a few people to get it. The plot is not this film's best asset, but who cares? Not most fans of this film, who are perfectly content to watch the talented and sexy Drew Barrymore in this most unlikely come-back role.

5-0 out of 5 stars a word of advice
watch poison ivy 1 & 2 but skip the new seduction. trust me, you'll thank me later. of all the erotic thrillers in the nineties, poison ivy comes off clean as one of the most original & well-made of the entire genre. surely there have been many imitiations of poison ivy but none hold up quite so well after nearly 12 years unfortunately as the one which started thegreat trend. who is ivy? is she a very lonely girl whose never had much of a life & simply desires the friendship of another rebellious young girl? or is she a greedy, evil snake in the grass? perhaps both? i'll have to admit it's hard to know exactly how to feel when you first watch this film & even harder to completely hate the character of ivy despite the evil things she does. drew barrymore gives a slick, seductive performance which is only rivaled by her companion coop(played by sara gilbert) & matched through the brilliant performance of verteran actor tom skerrit(who plays coops father). poison ivy, is suspenseful, sad, & often sensual although never really reaches the level of a softcore film like the rating might suggest. there are 2-3 implied sex scenes which may be considered objectionable for viewers under the age of 16. parents may wish to either view this film with their younger children or to screen it first before allowing for mixed family viewing. if you've seen poison ivy & loved it, go ahead & try the sequel which has alyssa milano. the 2nd poison ivy is quite good too although the first one is still the classic. go out & get your copy of poison ivy today on dvd & vote for me!! forget the tnt televsion edit & pick up the new line cinema dvd. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good horror film with two of Charlie's Angels
Satan's School For Girls. The title alone conjures up all types of lurid, imaginative ideas, doesn't it? Personally, I had images of leather and whips running amuck in my brain. Okay, so it has Kate Jackson (Charlie's "intelligent" Angel) in it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that some young lady won't at least sport a tight leather outfit. Of course, all of my hopes were quickly dashed when I saw the distinctly 70's television-ish credits appear; then the name of Aaron Spelling came up, and I knew my fantasies would not be realized. As it turns out, though, this is not a problem. The movie begins with an obviously terrified young lady driving erratically and very quickly down a deserted road, seemingly trying to escape from someone or something behind her. She manages to make it to the home of her sister, but just when she thinks she is finally safe something scares her so badly her screaming mechanism overheats. When sis gets home, she finds cops outside and a dead, hanged sister inside. Liz (Pamela Frank) refuses to accept the obvious conclusion of suicide and decides to enroll herself at her sister's school, the Salem Academy For Women, and conduct an investigation of her own. At this point, I was a little worried because this movie was giving every indication of being pretty bad. Once we arrive at the creepy school run by a headmistress everyone calls "the dragon lady," though, the story quickly begins to build momentum. Liz buddies up with Roberta (Kate Jackson), Debbie (Jamie Jackson), and Jody (Cheryl Stoppelmoor). Who is Cheryl Stoppelmoor, you might ask? Well, you probably know her better as Cheryl Ladd. Yes, there are two of Charlie's Angels in this movie, and that can never be a bad thing. Anyway, Liz meets up with two teachers, one of whom seems evil and twisted from the very start. Once the report of another former student's suicide hits campus, Liz is ready to begin seriously snooping around. When she explores the basement of her dorm, she finds much more than she bargained for (ergo, the Satan reference in the title).

To my surprise, this psychological horror tale of manipulation and evil is actually quite good. The plot is nowhere near as simple as you might think early on, and the whole atmosphere of the school is deliciously creepy. There is even one moment capable of producing a little jump in those lucky enough to not already be inured to such tangible effects of horror movies. The future Cheryl Ladd doesn't get nearly enough screen time, but Kate Jackson plays her part exceedingly well. The ending is something of a disappointment, I must admit, but the drama leading up to it is more than satisfying enough to leave me with a pretty high opinion of this film. If I'm not mistaken, this was actually a made-for-TV movie, and as such it is exceptional indeed. Of course, you won't find any blood and gore here, but the Gothic aspect of the tale really doesn't rely on such overt means of communicating its wickedly evil message. Satan's School For Girls really beats the odds, serving up a creepy tale worth watching more than once.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Cult Camp
This movie is a hoot! I remember seeing it when it originally aired in the early 70's. The DVD brought back a lot of memories for me. The campy dialogue, over-the-top performances from some of the actors, the "cheesey" feel that all those movie of the week films had back then. I'd also forgotten that the movie of the week format was only 90 minutes long as well. Some other reviews have complained about the quality of the DVD. I personally think the poor quality actually adds to the campiness of the movie. That's the way those movies were shown back then. Watching the DVD is like watching the movie the way it originally aired. I think it was a smart move not to "remaster" the quality of the film for the DVD. The grainey look just adds to it's charm. For any Charlie's Angels fans, it's also fun to see Kate Jackson and Cheryl Ladd working together prior to earning their wings. I remember Kate Jackson appearing in the movie but had no idea that Cheryl Ladd was in it as well. I was actually surprised her role was a big as it was, since I didn't remember her at all. For any fan of camp trash, this movie is a must have, so don't let all those complaints about the poor quality of the DVD scare you off. That is actually one of this DVD's biggest assets.

3-0 out of 5 stars funny movie, horrible quality dvd
As someone else noted, the picture quality on this dvd is quite horrendous. It does look like a very badly worn film reel. I found the sound okay for a made for tv movie from the 70's, though, and never had difficulty understanding the dialogue.

The real reason to get this, obviously, is for its high camp value. Even though some of the actors are decent, the overall production makes the entire thing silly. You gotta love the girls in hysteria scenes (the one before the first "suicide" and the second after the rat class). The score is so over the top it could be used in a parody.

I do remember seeing this on tv a lot in the 70's, late at night, but this is the second "Satan" film I have purchased and I still don't think I've found the one I'm really looking for. Does anyone remember one that also features a lot of teenage girls where the girls go out to some sort of altar and chant Satanic phrases? Maybe I'm just combining Yvonne DeCarlo's chanting in "Satan's Cheerleaders" with the girls in this film, but I don't think so.

1-0 out of 5 stars And for Stoicism, the Oscar goes to....
Though I'm a little embarassed to review a movie which doesn't move, I'm gutting it out because of Pamela Franklin, one of the two cutest actresses in history (the other being Genevieve Bujold), and in my view the *only* reason for watching this film. Having said that, I don't believe it's as bad as Leonard Maltin thinks it is, because there are a couple sequences in it, especially the one where Pamela goes, lamp in hand, down to the basement level of the schoolhouse in the midst of a thunderstorm, that are atmospheric -- not exactly classic Gothic stuff, but still passably good for a low-budget TV movie. In fact, most of the cast is either superior or respectable (not excluding Jo Van Fleet as the schoolmistress, and of course Roy Thinnes as the eponymous heavy). The problem is the contrived and pointless plot -- it's never explained why Satan, assuming He exists, should show up in this ridiculous little schoolhouse -- unless, like me, He's got a yen for Pamela (or Kate), so when we see him at the end of the film before his "coven" of acolytes with a monumental simper on his face, it's more outlandish than anything Aleister Crowley could have dreamed of. At that point, my jaw dropped about 5 inches, but not from horror. For her part, Pamela shows awesome professionalism in a role which insults her acting talent, but which still can't succeed in concealing her charm. It's films like this which make me think there should be a "Stoicism Award" at the Oscars, given to the candidate who, in spite of the most formidable obstacles, manages to escape from a movie without needing an exorcist.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 star movie - 1 star DVD
This is a great movie! I love the scene after the "rat class" when the one girl has a total breakdown, she is completely convincing & hilarious! But the DVD looks & sounds like it was mastered from a worn out rental tape! I was going to give it one star because of that, but figured people might think it was a bad movie or something! The DVD is still watchable & it's cheap enough to not really matter! ... Read more

Like the book it isnamed after and based on, Permanent Midnight is a chronicle of downfall. Jerry Stahl, the story goes, showed promise when doing shifts as a porn writer for Hustler and Penthouse, and his promise landed him in the exact center of television's hottest shows of the 1980s. Alas, Stahl also brought with him a gargantuan appetite for drugs, most damagingly heroin. The film begins with Stahl, played by Ben Stiller, working in a fast-food chain on his way back to society from the drug-addled skids and recovery. He's lured away from work, where in a hotel room with Maria Bello (as Kitty) he begins detailing his fall from TV's top (where he wrote for shows like Alf and Moonlighting, among others). Director David Veloz does great work in leading viewers through the episodes in addiction and excess, making the action seem naturally odd. There are priceless shots of Stahl and his coke-smoking buddy on an upper floor of a high-rise smoking and leaping into the windows--which don't break, of course. Stiller does a classy job of staying monochromatically zoomed in on scoring and shooting dope. He's sweaty and freaked out at the right times and grimy and desperate, too. The movie's a sad one, with Stahl's journey taking him through an arranged marriage (which benefited him enormously) to the couple's having a baby to getting busted on a rare occasion alone with the infant. It's a visceral script, replete with lots of intravenous drug use and Stahl/Stiller creating a recurring motif out of shooting the bloody drawback from the syringe onto the ceiling, making a mad little scribble. --Andrew Bartlett ... 3-0 out of 5 stars ...not as good as the book...
Well, are any movies EVER as good as the book? (Fear and Loathing in LV, maybe....) I had one really, really big problem with the movie: Mr. Chompers. Mr. Chompers is OBVIOUSLY Alf, if you didn't know. And Alf's alter ego has a HORRENDOUS name. Mr. Chompers. Jesus H. Christ. I could think of a million better names. Even the name Larry is better than Mr. Chompers. Or Ralph. I think it would've been really clever to use the name Ralph.

Another thing that really bothered me was the relationship between Kitty and Jerry. In the book, it was just so much better. It was like they were both big loser junkies trying to be big loser non-junkies together. I really hoped that everything would work out between them. But in the movie, I just really couldn't stand their relationship. I just kept thinking, "Jerry/Ben, get rid of her. She's stupid, and she just doesn't unerstand you and your pain. Forget her." Those two things take away 2 stars. So, ha.

I just thought the world of Ben Stiller's acting job. I've always liked Ben Stiller, even though he's been in some really stupid stuff (Envy). I don't really know why, but I want to see every movie he's in because he's just so great. And this movie made me like him even more! He was just SO GOOD. He was so believeable. Oh, if only I could rate his performance alone. He would surely get a perfect rating.

So, in conclusion, see the movie, THEN read the book. Unless you don't like reading, loser. Otherwise, if you read the book first, you'll be disappointed. And if you've already read the book, see the movie because Ben Stiller is terrific.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sad True Story of a Literate Junkie
Heroin. Opiates. Addiction. Recovery. For those who have faced such challenges, PM is a movie that rings true in almost every aspect. For those whose lives have not been affcted by the ravages of drug addiction, the movie offers a dramatic portrayel of Jerry Stahl, a writer known for his work on the TV show "ALF." Stahl was a writer with, a term often overused, an edge. His words drip with bite, secrete venom in their descriptive prowess, and ultimately combine to bring about the writer's crash into addiction. Stahl moves to LA, where he gets a writing job, makes alot of money, in fact way too much money for a writer with a habit, and falls very rapidly downt he black hole of drug addiction. In the darkness, however, we also see the light of recovery, which is handled in a true to life manner, displaying the sheer difficulty in dealing with the insanity of addiciton. Ben Stiller is excellent, adding dry comic wit to even the most disturbing of scenes. And there is a show stealing performance by Peter Greene, who has been in many movies, including The Mask, Pulp Fiction, and most reently Blue Streak, with Martin Lawrence. Permanent Midnight stands on par with Drugstore Cowboy and The Basketball Diaries in allowing the public an inside view into the harrowing, humerous, and heart wrenching world of heroin. The movie is a loaded syringe, ready to strike into the most virgin of veins: Mainstream Movie America. It is so good, you will come back for it again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Horrible Movie
People that compare movies to the original books are always going to be disappointed. That's no big mystery to anyone who's both read a single book or seen a single movie. Nuff said on that.

The movie is definitly a good one because it is very dark, and very real. Reviewers that bashed this movie are obviously clueless regarding drug use, drug users, and addiction. This movie is definitely disgusting and depressing because of its plausibility, and that's what makes it good. To have the perfect wife (Elizabeth Hurly), the perfect job, and still do anything and everything to get high demonstrates how the need overpowers someone's life. Permanent Midnight is "A Good Horrible Movie".

1-0 out of 5 stars READ THE BOOK! Don't see this trash
The book is excellent. Mostly from the "tone" and the way that Jerry Stahl tells his harrowing and sardonic account of drug addiction.

This movie doesn't have the tone right and nothing really works. It's not funny or sad just there.

Ben Stiller looks a little like Jerry but can't really pull off this story.

READ THE BOOK - it is a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars ben Stiller Serious

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless
This production is certainly a shining star in the careers of both Gregory Harrison and Cheryl Ladd. The entire supporting cast was equally impressive. I haven't met many folk that have seen it so I was thrilled to see at least a few reviews. I'm looking forward to finding a copy and seeing it again after all these years! I highly recommend a viewing of your own!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hasty Review
I am just so happy to find out that I can get a video on this remake "The Hasty Heart". Like the reviewer above, I saw this film many years ago....actually 15 years ago and about 6 years ago, I tried to look for it but no video store carried it. Its a movie I will never forget....the emotions I felt when I saw it....oh I am so happy I can get the video now. Thank God for the internet. This movie is probably one of best I have ever seen. Cherly Ladd...I could fall in love with her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Remake
The 1983 version of The Hasty Heart. Written in 1944, the play was originally made into a movie in 1949. The original movie starred Richard Todd, Patricia Neal and Ronald Reagan. Either version is good. The accents are better in the original. The content differs slightly. Perry King is great as the Yank. Gregory Harrison plays the surly soldier unaware that he is dying. Well worth seeing. A funny, warm tearjerker.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little sensitivity goes a long way!
I saw this movie over 10 years ago and have NEVER forgotten it. I have been unable to find it until today for sale OR rental anywhere. I rate this as one of my personal 10 best movies of all time! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars was it rape or seduction?
Even given that the screenplay by Richard Cassidy is based on a novel by Danielle Steel, director Adrian Carr creates the depth of a TV commercial. Made in the era when Australians thought they had to import American stars to give their product international appeal, Cheryl Ladd plays the American wife of novelist Robert Coleby. Coleby's English accent another form of throwback, where Australians spoke in English accents to show that they remain civilised in the primitive colony. The narrative focuses on Coleby being accused of the rape of Christine Amor. Carr establishes that Coleby is innocent, but he is convicted even when the prosecution only have circumstantial evidence. But whilst the trial is a farce, we know Coleby must suffer for betraying Ladd, who appears in a series of unflattering clothes. At least in her testimony, Amor conveys some real emotion, which is something one can hardly accuse Ladd or Coleby of. Coleby in particular is presented bare-chested a lot, presumably to give him a Robert Redford kind of appeal. The universe portrayed here is so conventional that we are supposed to find Coleby living as a writer as a "kept man" by Ladd's successful boutique Lady Jane "unconventional", though what is more unbelievable is the kind of prison he ends up in, with no cells and resembling a boy's camp. Carr provides a laughable montage of Coleby pre-trial writing in various hardbourside locations, and has him and Ladd talking over each other to show their breakdown in communications. Ladd's drunk scene isn't bad enough to be self-parody and the level of her risk taking is making her character a smoker. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Boy Meets A (Very Unique) Dog: Classic Tale for Children
It's a long loved story from the pen of the 19th Century then popular female writer Ouida, and now "A Dog of Flanders" is again treated as a movie for family viewing. Though the result turned out a mixed bag, it's not totally a messed job, and if you think about giving something to a kid, this is not a bad choice. And this film displays something very intersting about the cultural difference between Japan and USA.

This famous short story follows a hard-working Belgian boy Nello, whose ambition is to be a great painter, namely this case, Reubens. Through the boy is loved by his grandfather Daas and his girlfriend Aloise, and not least his Bouvier dog Patrasche, his life is not an easy one, bringing milk to the town every day with Patrasche pulling the cart. One day, he is "found" by a graet master of painting Michell (Jon Voight with a hevey accent), and Nello learns from the master that there is an annual contest for aspiring painters. But while he was trying to finish his work, a tragic accident happens to his life.

The film makes great changes to the original short story (especially the ending), but how you respond to that liberty will depend on your judgement. The fact that the critical reaction was at best very luckwarm proves that adults viewers might find this one very ordinary and mundane, and probably the film deserves better treatment. Though the locations are perfect, the story looks too banal, and -- this is more important -- it doesn't know its audience. Parents might be uncomfortable to see a dog is beaten by a drunken guy, or most of all, the secret of Nello's parentage is revealed. In fact, Nello's mother comes back home in the opening blizzard scene with a baby Nello -- clearly an echo of "Oliver Twist" -- but some kids (under the age of 3-6) may find it hard to understand why she think she is "disgraced" (the film uses this word at the end). Strangely Victorian here, but anyway, not a big matter, though.

As a whole, "A Dog of Flanders" is a satisfactry movie for older kids, and though it shows its hands too predictable way, the story itself is good, and it conveys surely its messages to kid's heart. The leading actors are in good form, and the dog is ... er ... very unique. so if you like dogs, you may be interested. And for adult viewers like me, it is a good thing to see Cheryl Ladd (ex-Chalie's Angels) again.

[ABOUT THE DIFFERENT ENDING OF THE FILM: COULD BE A SPOILER ... MAYBE NOT]

The Japanese version of this film has a different ending, which imdb doesn't seem to record. Japanese version doesn't have the last 5 minutes of the American counterpart, making the ending faithful to the original book. This is because this story is a vastly loved one in Japan owing to its very popular TV series made about 20 years ago, and every Japanese viewer knows its original ending. Producers, therefore, must have judged it unwise to "compromise" its ending as its new American version does. The actual difference is as follows:

Japanese version: Nello meets his mother again; they hug each other; (then the film directly jumps to the final cut of American film showing statue of Ruebens); two lights, presumably souls of them, going up to the Heaven; end credit rolls up.

This is a minor thing, I know, but it is intersting to note this differnce between Japanese and American sensibility.

And if you like this one, you may watch older version made in 1959. There is a Japanese animated version (2000) too, and this fact testifies to its popularity of this story. The original writer Ouida (a pen name for Louise De LaRamee, Bristish writer) herself loved dogs so much, and she is known for her life surrounded by dogs in Italy when she was old and impoverished. Check out the book too, if you like.

4-0 out of 5 stars not as good as the 1959 version
This remake of A Dog of Flanders was a decent movie but pales in comparison to the original version. Jeremy James Kissner was likeable enough as the young artist Nello, but the dog Patrasche was hideous looking. I've never seen an uglier dog in all my years of watching film. My advice is to rent the 1959 version with David Ladd.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good story - poor performances
The story and photography are quite good, but the acting is some of the worst I have seen, especially Nelo. Besides, why does a poor boy on the verge of starvation have perfectly styled hair and tons of screen makeup. He looks like he should be on Baywatch. Personally, I would give this film one star, but my kids didn't seem to notice the bad acting and other failings. Perhaps it's worth borrowing from a friend, but not worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really sweet and winsome
It starts out slow with what looks to be a really boring rainy village dog film but turns out to be a wonderful and original movie. The acting is great on all hands but especially by the lead actor who plays Nello. Adults and children alike will enjoy it. There is a fight scene with a cleaver which though not bloody at all could frighten young children. Also a scene with a gypsy fortune teller that as achristian I zipped over. It is a sweet story that is very inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aboaned,Misguied,Blamed ,and worst of all he suffered it!
Young Nello Daas and his mother Mary Daas were very poor they were both aboaned bye the anoymous father of Nello.Soon Mary travels too her father's house .6 years later Nello is now about 6 or 7 his mother is dead and he is living as a traveler milk seller .He is so happy until oddly his world comes crashing down very soon a new chacter arrives on the scene Master Stephens a very sturub man who makes Nello and his grandfather pay the rent.3 years later Nello is soon misguied bye his best friend Aloise's father .Later on the shed was caught on fire in the middle of the night .Nello was blamed soon Nello realize's that he won't become a great artist. With that he looses a art contest ,but things look up when he finds a wallet.knowing it is Master Cogez wallet he returns it then runs .This is not a drama master piece .But in 1999 Kevin Brodie did win a Oscar for this film .No it's not a masterpiece but it did win a Oscar and this is all it needs .1.A Good Title 2.Great Actors 3.Terrific Music 4.Some religon mentioned 5.Action 6.Must be emotional 7.A award 8.Romace is good 9.A good intersing plot last but not least A good feeling. This movie just still sends chills up my spine .Just watching how Nello struggles and how he starts too relize that he is loved and that he does have a father that loves him dearly. This on a scale of 1 to 10 a perfect 10!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Teenagers will love this movie!
This is a perfect example of a film stricty meant for teenagers.
LISA used a very creative theme by having the title character, played to near-perfection by Staci Keanan, having phone conversations with a guy who turns out to be a serial killer, already in the headlines as " the candlelight killer".
Cherryl Ladd gives a good performance as Lisa' s mom Catherine. Another film that is remarkable about this movie is the mother-daughter bond between the two actresses and the tensions in that relationship due to Lisa' s adolescent crisis.
A good thing about LISA is that it gives the viewer the impression that the movie is a mix of to plots:the first one consists of the mother-daughter bond giving a dramatic flavor to the movie and the second one involving Lisa in a troublesome situation with a psychotic killer who will track her down eventually, giving LISA a very suspenceful flavor. The film also features a good dramatic musical score. However the fine print of this film is that you could watch it 100 times when you are 15 and not get bored of it and then not have cravings to see it again as you grow older. This is suspence but obviously cannot be in the same category as other great suspence movies; it is obvious that LISA was marketed for the teenage segment only. And plus, it is essential to state that this film is so forgotten ( despite the fact that it was released by United Artists) that it does not appear in some movie guides. Or, if there is a listed review it tends to be on the negative side, putting an emphasis on the film' s weaknesses only.I must say that I really liked this movie when I was a teenager.I stronly recommend this film to anyone who loves suspence althought it is sometimes hard to find this movie in your local video store and I notice that this film is rarely aired on commercial TV. But the trouble is worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars a great little thriller!
This is definitely one of my favorite movies...i own it and watch if every once in a while...having seen it at least 20 times, i never get sick of it and always have a great pleasure watching it...its a shame not too many people have seen this because it truly is a suspenseful and engrossing thriller....

5-0 out of 5 stars Staci Keanan proves she can act.
After years of watching Staci as the neurotic Dana on Step by Step, I discovered this gem in the video store. It's certainly a less-than-perfect example of film noir of the 90's, but I enjoyed it immensely. Staci Keanan and Cheryl Ladd play off each other very well. The angsty dialogue gets tiresome, but it's heartfelt. And the ending...very cool. If you can find this, see it. ... Read more

The script for this story adds a few more human elements than the other versions. The tensions between Dr. Jekyll, his father-in-law and his romance with his sister-in-law along with the Hyde conflict adds to a complex drama. Michael Caine turns in a fine performance as the brilliant Dr. Jekyll. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great 70's Spider Film, Shatner Shines
Kingdom of the Spiders is a lesser known gem that came out along with some other films like Food of the Gods, Day of the Animals, and Grizzly. William Shatner is in prime form as he tries to save an Arizonia town from infestation. The spiders themselves-tarantulas are decidedly creepy and while the film doesn't have a whole lot of plot necessarily you'll shudder and shake as Shatner, love interest, and some oldsters try to save themselves from the invading arachnids. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great creepy suspense!!
OK, so everyone hates Ted McGinley's character in this movie. But he did a great job with the role. McGinley plays Mitch Carson, a sick, perverted, creepy wierdo who lures teenage girls over the internet from their homes to his hideout where he holds them against their will and actually offers them for sale over the internet. The 16 year old girl in this movie is Martha, a lonely and troubled teen who is the latest to fall victim to Carson. Ted McGinley from first glance in this movie appears as a very normal guy. He dresses nicely, talks to Martha nicely when he picks her up from his buddy Drew, whom Martha was first lured to. "Hi Martha" McGinley sais, "I'm Mitch Carson, I'm just another computer geek who works for an organization which helps kids in trouble get back home and away from guys like Drew." "Can I call my mom?" Martha asks him. "Sure", Carson(McGinley) sais, smiling all innocent to her, "you can use the cell in my truck." Well, the nice guy routine works, into his truck she goes. But the cell phone is dead, and with more and more sweet talking, Martha and Mitch carson are off to his hideout, which Martha is totally unsuspecting of. She thinks Carson is taking her to meet her parents somewhere. The suspense really, really builds about 45 minutes into the movie, and does it ever get cree-eeepy!! It's not a movie for everyone, but if you're in the mood for a creepy, suspenseful thriller this is it!! I think it's also a true story which makes it even more chilling. Martha's mother, played by Cheryl Ladd, you will enjoy watching as well, as she is very attractive and does a great job as playing a mother who is about to have a breakdown if she doesn't find her daughter. Another movie I recommend, although I don't think it's on VHS or DVD is a Lifetime Original movie titled, "Video Voyeur: The Susan Wilson Story", starring Angie Harmon. As you guessed, it comes on Lifetime from time to time.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!
I found this movie to be very informative. You never know who you could be talking to on the other end, and this is one time you are not safe even in your own home. After watching this movie, you may never want to go into a chat room again!

3-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE GRACE KELLY, but not this film
i am a true GRACE KELLY fan. i have seen all her films and i almost have every biography so i feel confident enough to say that this film did not do justice to the life Grace lived. Now i didnt expect the film to tackle every element of her life or career but this movie still left out a lot. it is known, no matter what biography you read, that Grace was quite promiscuous in her early years in new york. And she had several affairs with her leading men(such as clark gable, one which the film shows, ray milland, william holden, and even bing crosby fell in love with her) but the film fails to even touch on these relationships. this movie tried to make her appear to be so innocent and angelic. i dont want to see her reputation dragged through the mud but i do want to see the truth. there is a way to tackle those moments in her life without resorting to trashy direction, but i guess that would require good direction and a good screenplay. the movie also failed to show how famous she became within the five year period in which she became a star(1952-56). the film 'fourteen hours' which was really her first film debut is never even mentioned. and the movie never payed any notice to the fixation that alfred hitchcock had for her, which i think would have been an interesting development to see. the academy award scene was just awful. there was no tension(everyone wanted judy garland to win the award), no excitement and no joy in her winning. when i read GRACE by robert lacey i actually felt excited for her and nervous and almost shed a tear when she won and thats just a book. the wedding to prince rainer was rushed and the ending was weak. i didnt like the film ending at the wedding. i was just really disappointed with this film. i expected so much more and i was let down a great deal. but cheryl ladd did an ok job as grace. THE THREE STARS ARE FOR GRACE, NOT THE FILM.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but formulaic
I caught this on TV the other night while suffering from a bout of insomnia. It didn't put me to sleep, which is a good thing, and made for a pleasant diversion. Cheryl Ladd is lovely and luminous as Grace Kelly, but is given little to chew on acting-wise. That's true of the movie as a whole: it looks great (costumes, make-up, and hair are marvelously done) but skates along the surface. We get the usual tough-as-nails but heart-of-gold dad, who is distant emotionally, and the string of relationships Ladd goes through before meeting Mr. Right. There's no meat here, but at least the picture doesn't dredge up the worst possible details about Princess Grace and parade them about -- there's a degree of respect for the subject. It seems to follow the standard TV bio-pic formula; it's also shot with that gauzy filtered-lens look common to made-for-TV movies of the early 1980's. Enjoyable if you're in the mood. ...
