In another coup, "Therese and Isabelle" takes lesbianism away from academic feminism and reveals it to be a human sexual experience, rather than a political spasm of inscrutability. It lays bare the fact that girls (perhaps 15-16 years old) having lesbian experiences are quite perfectly human, seeking warmth and beauty, and finding it. The ability of the girls to explore each other meaningfully juxtaposed with the inferior though expert fumblings of a boy of the same age, whose sexual expression is akin to urination, is quite striking and helps expose the limitations of modern culture in which boys tend to be gropers rather than lovers. The plot is credible. The settings and relationships portrayed do occur. Sexuality is shown to be confusing to some, who become interfering, and a source of enrichment to others. The acting is splendid, giving the characters clear and credible personalities, incorporating sincere emotion and sexuality. Subtleties and nuance are handled beautifully. The script is perfect, with excellent dialog. The girls aren't imbued with unnecessary characteristics such as being amateur philosophers or political agitators. They are developed to be as young people generally are -- concerned with themselves and eager to meet the world half-way. To be commended to anyone over the age of 12. ... Read more | |

To anybody who hasn't seen this movie, it is a very captivating tale about two jazz musicians (Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier) living in Paris. The music is fantastic, including a very uplifiting cameo by Satchmo himself, Louis Armstrong. Jazz lovers and fans of old black & white films will absolutely love this. And even if you're not a specific fan of these, there is a great story that will keep you interested.
