5-0 out of 5 stars A touching, truly special adult movie
I was really surprised by this movie. I expected a cheesy 1960's adult movie. But this movie is truly something special. It is a tender, touching and yes, sexy movie about first love. The acting is superb, especially by heartbreakingly beautiful Essy Persson. The editing, photography and direction is superb. A wonderful movie that reminds one not only of the beauty of love, but also its pain and heartbreak.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sensitive portrayal of first love
This movie is one of the most sensitive handlings of first love. The acting is so well done you suffer along with the characters as they awaken to their mutual feelings. The narration is beautiful and the scenes tasteful but erotic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An old film but a goodie!
I saw this movie a few years ago for the first time. It's now part of my film library. Such a provocative film for 1968. This film was way before it's time. I strongly recommend this film if you enjoy Lesbian films with a plot. The film is extremely erotic with the dialog alone. You'll get your fill of nudity too. Very well done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie - sloppy presentation!
Radley Metzger at his best! This is a haunting and deeply moving tale about love, sexuality and adolescence. Camerawork and editing are superb. And Essy Persson as Therese is just marvellous. The real downside is the presentation of this movie. The DVD is widescreen (slighly cropped, i think) but the picture is too soft. This is a shame because this beautiful movie deserves a first class presentation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful sexual reminiscence
This movie is wonderfully scripted and acted. Gesture and word throughout are well-crafted, and tell a story of youthful lesbian sexuality, exquisitely and tastefully unfolded and revealed. It is an "adult" film the way film should be for adults: it is about the development of personality and sexuality, an adult film that wrestles the genre away from cheap and hollow pornographers.

In another coup, "Therese and Isabelle" takes lesbianism away from academic feminism and reveals it to be a human sexual experience, rather than a political spasm of inscrutability. It lays bare the fact that girls (perhaps 15-16 years old) having lesbian experiences are quite perfectly human, seeking warmth and beauty, and finding it. The ability of the girls to explore each other meaningfully juxtaposed with the inferior though expert fumblings of a boy of the same age, whose sexual expression is akin to urination, is quite striking and helps expose the limitations of modern culture in which boys tend to be gropers rather than lovers.

The plot is credible. The settings and relationships portrayed do occur. Sexuality is shown to be confusing to some, who become interfering, and a source of enrichment to others. The acting is splendid, giving the characters clear and credible personalities, incorporating sincere emotion and sexuality. Subtleties and nuance are handled beautifully. The script is perfect, with excellent dialog. The girls aren't imbued with unnecessary characteristics such as being amateur philosophers or political agitators. They are developed to be as young people generally are -- concerned with themselves and eager to meet the world half-way. To be commended to anyone over the age of 12. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paris Blues - DVD PLEASE!!!!!!
A fabulous movie all around: great plot, acting, music, and cinematography. Moody and atmospheric, it wonderfully captures the Paris '50-'60 jazz scene. BUT CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE FIND A WAY TO GET THIS ONTO DVD!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Ellington stuff from a movie less significant.
Although the movie is not "bad" it pales in comparison to the music Duke Ellington recorded for this 1961 film. Mixing a bit of contemporariness to many of his otherwise "historical" masterpieces, Duke found a magic line and made it grand. Such works as 'Battle Royale' are a testament to just how hard he could swing his men. The CD does feature a nice multi-media component for your PC which contains a high quality original movie trailer for those film buffs who are interested in such extras. The addition of movie 'snippetts' however, tends to get on my nerves. There is no point, in my opinion, to interrupting the music with random movie 'dialogue'. One should simply see the movie for this. Overall this is however, a very worthy CD with some GREAT quality Ellington recordings. Recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars More classics such as these on DVD please!
With all the rubbish that is immediately thrown onto disks, why on earth does it take forever to get the good stuff on DVD?

5-0 out of 5 stars We Want The DVD!!!
Okay, including me there are now 4 reviews begging for a release of this movie on DVD. Come on, people, let your voices be heard!!! If you would like to see this movie released in DVD format, write in or at least give a helpful vote to those who have written, so they can see how many others are waiting.

To anybody who hasn't seen this movie, it is a very captivating tale about two jazz musicians (Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier) living in Paris. The music is fantastic, including a very uplifiting cameo by Satchmo himself, Louis Armstrong. Jazz lovers and fans of old black & white films will absolutely love this. And even if you're not a specific fan of these, there is a great story that will keep you interested.

5-0 out of 5 stars wish the DVD would come out as well -

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Love This Film!
I simply love this film! Everything in this film (music, dialogues, lighting, angles, actors/actresses, costumes, locations)fits perfectly. Claude Jade is beautiful in the film. By coincident, I saw this film right after a long trip from France. Made me relive my whole French experience all over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Claude Jade is brilliant in this bitter Doinel-Adventure.
It's one of the best movies, I'll ever seen. The couple of "Stolen Kisses", Jean-Pierre Léaud and Claude Jade, is brilliant. You want to the how a director MUST work with actors? See this bitter comedy about the marriage. ... Read more
