5-0 out of 5 stars Mother's Day... A Grand Holiday!
MOTHER'S DAY, in order to be enjoyed, must be viewed as a parody. It borrows elements from TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, and ravels it all into one enjoyable horror film. In spite of all the horror that goes on within the movie, you cannot help but laugh at all the mistakes and at the dimwit brothers who kidnap girls to bring to their mother- who sits in a chair and watches them beat, rape, and kill them. What makes the film even more gruesome is that you actually care about what happens to the three girls who meet in the woods for a little college reunion and are kidnapped by the two brothers (which are, by the way, rather repulsive to look at) and brought, dragged around in their sleeping bags, to their home to show to their mother.

This has all the elements of a great Troma film-- kind-of-bad acting (except the three girls are stand-outs in the film), some corny dialouge, pretty fair special effects, and a cheesy storyline... and it is GREAT.

Some may call it "distasteful", others may call it "just plain stupid", but to me- and tons of other Troma fans- this is a milestone in the horror genre, and not to be missed. If you haven't already viewed this wonderful horror film-- WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? RENT IT TODAY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sexy Rednecks Get Killed by College Bimbos
Two really hot rednecks are unfortunately killed by two ex college roomies who apparantly have nothing better to do then get together once a year to remember (choke) their college days.
They start out as a trio and thankfully one of them is done away with early on. The other two kill the sexy rednecks and then their retarded mother. I mean really...the only interesting people in this film are the redneck boys and then those college morons killed them. Thankfully at the end, the maniacal QUEENIE jumps out and gives those girls WHAT FOR for murdering her hot nephews.
I was rooting for the rednecks all the way. If I had met them I would have asked them for a date. Why are women always turning down advances by such hot guys. What is a dude to do when women are always killing the hottest trade?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie! One of my favorite 80's horror movies.
I'm obsessed with this movie! When i first saw it in the theatres back in the 80's, this movie was severely cut due to the graphic violence. I love everything about this movie, from the casting, to the location shots, to the storyline and acting. For those unfamilar with the Troma movies, Troma is a company that specializes in grade B horror/sci-fi exploitation flicks. Many of the Troma movies have a very dark and twisted sense of humor to them, in additon to the drama and suspense or horror. Mother's Day is no exception. The story is about three girls who were best friends in college, who go on yearly reunions where they camp in the woods. This time they have chosen to camp out in an area where a demented family of hillbilly rednecks are living. Mother is the head of this strange family. She is living with her two backwoods sons and schooling them in the art and specialty of attacking and rapeing and killing of young women. This whole premise sounds totally sick and demented, and it is....as only the Troma team can present it. You have to see this movie to believe how incredibly over-the-top it is. The performances are excellent, especially the two sons. They are both adults, but behave like children due to their backwards upbringing. All that these boys want to do is make their Mother proud and be the best killers possible. The chemistry and interaction between Mother and her two sons makes for fun viewing. Even the three girls who eventually get kidnapped give credible performances. A lot of the female victims in horror movies are disposable characters that you really don't care if they get killed off or not, but there's enough character development here that you'll find yourself caring about the girls in Mother's Day. The final climactic showdown scene between the girls and the sons is exciting and memorable, mostly for the creative use of weapons. The only cheesy part of that scene was when one of the girls was shown holding a television set over her head as a murder weapon. You'll have to suspend your disbelief on that one. I guess tv sets were really light way back then (i'm being sarcastic!).The dvd extras include commercials for other Troma films, a few comedy skits about Troma that are so-so, and other stuff about Troma Studios. The best extra has to be the director's commentary because it is one of the best i've heard for a grade B horror movie since the commentary for The Evil Dead. I learned so much trivia and interesting info on the making of Mother's Day from the commentary. Fans of the movie will love the commentary! This movie has elements of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Last House On The Left, and i highly recommend this movie if you're a fan. Please keep in mind that Mother's Day is a dark comedy horror movie. It IS a horror movie, there's no denying that, BUT there are enough elements of twisted dark comedy to it involving the personalities of the two sons and their interaction with each other that it reminds us we're not watching a totally serious horror movie such as The Exorcist. Mother's Day is not for everyone, and many of the reviewers here on Amazon have said it's the worst film they have ever seen, blah blah blah. Anyone who says that is not a true fan of Troma films because they obviously don't understand the genre. You'll need to watch more than one Troma film to understand that statement. Just watch the trailers for the other films on this dvd and you'll know what i mean. This movie is excellent and i'm glad to see the dvd is the director's cut with all the violence and gore that was cut from the theatrical print lovingly put back in. If you loved Motel Hell (and i DO!!), you'll love Mother's Day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Trash...Gotta Love It!!
I have seen this movie several times, the special FX are nothing more than [junk], the storyline is tolerable, and the acting is ridiculous. All in all a wonderful "B" Flick to sit down and sink your teeth into. Any reviewer that feels this movie has to be analysed to be death has too much time on his hands. This movie is what it is and that's all!! Just enjoy it for that simple reason.
I have enjoyed this movie for many years and will continue to enjoy it for many to come. I am still trying to get my hands on the unrated widescreen version (if there is one...)(fingers crossed!!). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered spoof gem
Maybe a little too far behind the AIRPLANE rip-off zeitgeist when it came out in 1985 to be remembered, WHEN NATURE CALLS (no, not the Ace Ventura sequel) seems ready to finally find a cult audience, a few decades late, on DVD. At its best when it is content to be a collection of sketches -- especially the nearly ten minutes of coming-attractions spoofs at the beginning of the film -- the movie loses a bit of energy when it settles into a silly story about a father moving his kin out to the country where they encounter the trials of wilderness living. There are a hell of a lot of groans in this movie, but quite a few lowbrow belly laughs too. And it's a lot better double-feature partner to KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE than AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOOON.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I must admit I purchased this only to see the lovely Gates McFadden. If you are thinking along the same lines, DO NOT buy this without renting it first. She only appears for about five minutes, albeit in a t-shirt and shorts. I did watch the movie and can say that as a comedy, it makes a good sedative. This idea was better done later with Amazon Women on the Moon

3-0 out of 5 stars you must love the absurd to like this movie
If you liked attack of the killer tomatoes, you'll like this movie. Not for the artsy crowd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Troma film
This movie has probably the best love scene ever filmed between a woman and a bear. with that in mind, it isn't for everyone. I loved it and other warped minds will too. Best if viewed under the influence...

4-0 out of 5 stars This is hilariously stupid. Will have you rolling on floor!

3-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Troma but still Full Grown-a
First let me apoligize, I usually have a clever saying at the top but this time I just can't think of anything. Anyway, onto the review.

The single greatest director who ever lived, Lloyd Kaufman, made this back in 1971. It's a whimsical (but not the whimsical that means "boring", but whimsical meaning it's full of heart) look at a poor young man named Abercrombie who goes through alot of problems in life.

Although not as Tromaliscious as Lloyd's newer works ("Terror Firmer", "Tromeo and Juliet") it's still a darn good movie. Some parts are a little slow, but you must understand it was made for only $8,000 and in limited location. The movie does feature a cameo by Lloyd's childhood friend (seriously) Oliver Stone, and even some slightly-foul music that makes you wonder how it got a "G" rating. Of course, the MPAA are cruel bastards, but I wont get into that now.

In short, "The Battle Of Love's Return" is a funny not-so-dark comedy that the whole family can watch. If you're not interested in that, it's still worth getting for the humorous opening with "Oliver Stone" and the very first "Tromaville Cafe" short.

I am still trying to get my hands on the unrated widescreen version (if there is one...)(fingers crossed!!). ... Read more
