Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlersand Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, andkids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual. 4-0 out of 5 stars Disney's Pocahontas Gold Collection DVD
Pocahontas is a good tale that deserves to have the Disney name. While far from the most entertaining in the Disney library, this one does have some of the most spectacular animation and imagery then any of them! The film is definatley not for the very young, there is much war violence (superficial, yes, but it's still there), including some blood-free shot wounds. The story is much more mature oriented, with Pocahontas trying to end the war between her people and the white-men for the sake of her love for John Smith.

The film has many songs, but only a few stand out - -Oscar Award Winner "Colors Of The Wind" is one of them, "Around the River Bend", and "If I Never Knew You" is the other - - the rest are catchy, but unmemorable numbers.

The "Gold Classic Collection" DVD edition of the 1995 film, has a mediocre picture. There is constant grain, and it is rarely perfectly clear. On the plus side, the animation is still able to be appreciated and the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is good.

Again, this is NOT the Disney movie to show little kids (it would probably be a complete fly-by for them), but it does have much appeal to an older audience who can appreciate the animation, and the Oscar- winning music. A true modern masterpiece.

3-0 out of 5 stars POCAHONTAS DVD REVIEW: What happened to the video???
I suppose this movie has a more meaning for me due to a past romance and the this to be the movie we shared, so I enjoyed it. Sure, Disney knows how to take some part of history and make it so fictional but one of the things I like about this movie is the detail they put into Pocahontas facial expressions. That feature always caught me.

Anyway, you either like the animation or you don't. The audio is very well done. No major sound effects but the music and the dialogue is the main things for this film. What about the video? The video is a shock. Where Tarzan bursts with a radiance of colors, not Pocahontas. What happened during the transfer? It's like a transfer from a video tape seen 10 times before. Not acceptable with a DVD! I can't believe the colors aren't superb.

Extras...well, I guess after the fans were upset that Disney didn't include any extras in their previous releases, now they are with their "Gold Collections". I like how the DVD has the two music videos especially "Colors of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams. There are a lot of trailers before the movies which you can fortunately skip over, a trivia game and DVD storybook like the Tarzan DVD and a fun with nature booklet which they should of added to the DVD. Otherwise it's better than what we got before from older Disney DVD's. So, we have the movie at above average, the special features in the C to C- range and the DVD Overall probably a B-/C+.

Otherwise, for a DVD from Disney, this movie deserved better. A better video transfer and they could at least added the making of Pocahontas or something. (sigh)...

Anyway, if you want to watch Pocahontas, get the DVD version. Even those it's VHS quality, you get those extras and good sound. If you don't care about the extras and just want to see the movie, then the VHS might be your thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Politically-correct racism
I wish my children had never seen this movie, but since I made the mistake of trusting Disney and since it reappears on TV frequently, I've used it as an opportunity to talk about the blatant (but politically-correct) racism woven through it. My point to my children: racism is wrong, no matter who it's directed at (a point that goes directly against the main theme of the movie).

In this movie, there is one and only one exception to the rule that all Native Americans are good and all English are bad. John Smith is the exception that proves the rule - other than him, all British are evil (and crude, dirty, greedy, etc.). The Native Americans aren't all quite perfect but all come around in the end, while the English are clearly rotten to the core, and the world would be a better place if they were all gone.

Get this movie for your children IF you want to teach them to use skin color as a way of predicting good versus evil. And don't worry, they won't get the wrong, racist lesson that dark skin is bad - they'll get the politically-correct lesson, that people with white skin are bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disney produces yet another inaccurate cartoon...
As always, Disney provides us with an hour-glass shaped, beautifully dashing, ever accomodating heroine, and a strong, handsome, brave, conquering hero; a romance story that is historically inaccurate, romanticized, racist, and sexist. "Pocahontas" was not her real name, and she was about ten years old. According to LEGEND, she saved John Smith's life - the woman of color saves the white man, while falling in love with him. According to REAL history, he was brought in to the village, well-fed and well-treated. Most likely, she simply talked with him while he was in her village. There was NO romantic relationship. She was actually kidnapped a few years later and held for ransom in Jamestown. She died of a White Man's disease. Disney has created a cartoon "Romeo & Juliet" story for children, and what hurts my heart the most is that people really believe that the Disney version is true. There are so many un-truths in the world, especially in our Media, and "Pocahontas" is one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Story with a touch of History
In reality Pocahontas was the wife of another white settler named John Rolfe. She later became Lady Rebecca. We can say she fell in love with John Smith but their love story didn't workout.
The story of Pocahontas repesents us all Americans. That no matter how you look like, Black or White we are all foreigners on this land. The original Americans are the American Indians, cause they are already here when Columbus discovered America. As for this movie itself, I love it especially the music. ... This 1995 family film tries to put a fun spin on the story of a paranormalist and widower (Bill Pullman) who moves into a new house with his daughter (Christina Ricci) and meets up with the ghost of a dead little boy. Based on the comic book about Casper the friendly ghost, the film is a dreary series of awkward interactions between live actors and computer effects, and you can almost see Pullman and Ricci reconsidering the project while on camera. A few cameo appearances from uncredited stars help things a bit. But there's no way, based on this film, that one could have guessed that its director, Brad Silberling, would go on to make the exceptional drama City of Angels. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Sweet and Sentimental Comedy, Perfect for the Family
Casper is a fun children's film, that can be watched as a family and keep everyone entertained. Unlike many movies concerning ghosts, there is no reason to worry that this movie will upset or scare even the most sensitive children. Casper is sweet and endearing, and even the vicious ghosts in this film are far from threatening as they quickly bring a smile to your face and alleviate any tension with humor.
However, Casper does not rely souly on laughter, and has a strong plot to back it up. It raises spiritual questions that make you think, and has very heartfelt moments of intense emotion. You grow to care about the characters as we watch Casper and Kat in their simultaneous search for friendship, and Dr. Harvey in his quest to resolve his own unfinished business and finally get some closure.
Malachi Pearson does an outstanding job as the voice of Casper, and portrays all of his emotions very convincingly. You can also look forward to a great performance from Bill Pullman, and will love hating the bumbling villains portrayed by Cathy Moriarty and Eric Idle. Unfortunately, there are times where Christina Ricci seems to have some difficulty filling her role as Kat, and occasionally makes scenes awkward and unconvincing.
The score for this film is beautiful, and adds a great deal to the spirit and mood of the movie.
There is some light use of profanity that I don't find necessary or appropriate for a family film aimed largely at children, but it can be easily overlooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, fun movie!
I just love CASPER. It's a really great movie. CASPER is about a man (Bill Pullman) who studies the supernatural in search for his dead wife. He keeps moving his teenager daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) around all over the place because his job requires a lot of traveling. Kat hates all the moving because she never gets a chance to live in a particular place long enough to make any friends. When her father is asked to find the spirits who live in a haunted house in Maine, he promises Kat that this will be the last place they will move to.

A woman who wants Kat's father to talk to the ghosts wants him to do that because she is looking for a "secret treasure" that has been hidden in the house for years. Little does anyone know that this is the home of Casper the ghost and his "uncles": Stinky, Fatso, and Streatch. And they are not happy that somebody is moving into their house except for Casper. Casper is excited because Kat - a girl - is moving into the house, too. So while the father and Kat are living at the mansion, the three ghosts try to make them miserable...so miserable that they'll want to move out. But Casper is trying to impress Kat so he can win her over! An excellent movie with a special appearence by teen crooner, Devon Sawa, as Casper, the real boy.

If you are a fan of the Supernatural and of comedy movies, than this movie is for you!!

4-0 out of 5 stars An endearing film about Casper and his friend Kat!
"The living impaired are known for haunting us," Dr Harvey explains, "My question is what's haunting them." Dr. Harvey and his daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) are persuaded to leave Santa Fe and come to Friendship, Maine to live at Whipstaff Manor, to help new owner Carrigan Crittendon and her friend Dibs get rid of the ghosts haunting her manor. Casper the Friendly Ghost is very excited when he learns that Dr. Harvey and his pretty young daughter Kat are going to be living in his house (maybe he can finally make a friend!); but his ghostly uncles have other plans...

The premise of Casper is that ghosts exist, are "spirits with unfinished business" (hence they have not yet "crossed over"), and interact freely with "live" people at times; (they haunt houses and wreak havoc on people who trespass there). For those who are worried about content: there is a scene where a man gets drunk in a bar and has an accident, there is a Halloween costume party, there are a few ghosts who are "mean" and play tricks and scare people, and a few arguments between characters in the film. There is a very sweet and innocent kiss between a girl and boy, but otherwise there is no objectionable content in that respect. Language: there are a few swear words, so be aware!

If you can view this film with the belief that it is just a cute and funny film about "ghosts," which as we know do not exist, it is a most enjoyable film. If you cannot rest easy while watching a film about ghosts, then by all means don't watch it. For those of you who can separate the real from the unreal and the difference between spirits and ghosts, the supernatural world and the real world, this is a cute and endearing film about a friendly ghost named Casper and his new friend Kat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Family 'Friendly'.....
Any film that can gather the family together for a fun, wholesome, and entertaining view, and hold the interest of all for it's entire length, gets 5 stars in my book. "Casper" is one of those films. It may not go down as some great piece of cinematic art, but it is one that all generations can enjoy, will leave you with a smile, and something to talk about with kids afterwards.

Based on the old comic book stories, "Casper" is a very friendly but very lonely ghost. He lives in an old mansion, that has seen better days. He is not alone in this huge house though, he lives with his three very nasty(but funny) uncles,"Stretch", "Stinky" and "Fatso". Casper only wants someone to move in,so he could have a friend, the uncles on the other hand, do their very best to scare away any visitors.
So when a greedy woman inherits the property, and believes there is a buried treasure inside, she hires an array of 'ghostbusters' to rid the house of all spirits. None seem to be able to handle this terrible trio, until one day a ghost psychiatrist and his lonely daughter(also looking for a friend),move in and try to tame the threesome. From there it's a fun and wild ride, and a touching story of friendship.

The film has a terrific cast that works well with the wonderful animation and special effects. Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci are the father and daughter team that befriend these spirits. Cathy Moriarty("Forget Paris"), and Eric Idle as her bumbling assistant add their talents as they go for the treasure.Lots of big names are cameoed throughout. Don Novello, and Dan Aykroyd reprise their roles of Father Guido Sarducci, and ghostbuster Dr. Raymond Stantz for brief appearances, just to name a couple.
The voices including Brad Garrett as "Fatso" are marvelous, and you can never go wrong when James Horner scores a film with just the right touches.

It's rated PG for some occassional mild language and thematic elements, and at an hour and a half, it just the right length, and is a delightful way to spend some laugh out loud family time together.

Ghostly fun......enjoy.....Laurie

4-0 out of 5 stars A "Spirited" Movie (yuk yuk); a "Poor" ending
Casper (not to be confused with "Casper: A Spirited Beginning" or any of the Casper The Friendly Ghost cartoons) is an interesting mix of elements both good and bad - but mostly good.

Without a doubt, the movie's strongest asset is its humor. By and large, this is thanks to Casper's uncles Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso (The Ghostly Trio), all of whom are hilariously animated and perfectly voiced by three actors whose names I unfortunately can't remember. Bill Pullman is also very funny as Dr. Harvey, and great supporting comic performances are lent by Cathy Moriarty as the evil Carrigan Crittenden and Eric Idle as Carrigan's long-suffering sidekick, Dibs.

All of this, of course, amounts to a sub-plot in the end - a prominent one, but a sub-plot nonetheless. The main story is that of Casper (voiced by Malachi Pearson) and Dr. Harvey's young daughter, Kat (Christina Ricci). Ricci says some of her lines awkwardly (in my opinion), but for the most part does a nice job. Jessica Wesson's portrayal of Amber, the snotty girl at Kat's school, is perfect.

I think the movie's flaws lie in its plot more than anything else. For instance: throughout the story, Kat has a crush on Vic, the supposedly cute (and slimy) kid at her school, but in the end when Vic shows his true colors and stands her up at the Halloween party, she doesn't really seem to care at all. There is a brief shot of her sitting by the wall with a pouty (well, really, more broody) expression on her face, but this is dispensed with in an instant.

Another of my biggest beefs is with the ending. I don't want to give away specifics, but it is the weakest part of the story - bittersweet and touching one moment, and then it turns raucous and weird before you can blink. Makes you want to throttle the nearest neck.

Ah, well. As I said earlier, the movie is far more good than bad, and of course everything here is just one person's opinion. Who knows. You might love the ending. But if not, I have a feeling you'll like most everything else. ... Read more

I know how some people dont exactly like a worm who is best friends with a very cute booger, but I think they might make an exception for Jim. Ever since 1994 ( Earthworm Jim for snes) he have been sqirming into our hearts. Annd the TV series was no less than great. This is my favorite episode, but i havent seen it in 6 years. Even though I was 8 then, I knew what quality animation was, and this was it.But once Pokemon came to kids WB, all the cool shows went off(animaniacs, Sylvester and Tweety mysteries,Freakazoid, EARTHWORM JIM, and Road Rovers.) I'd rate this video 100 out of 100. Get it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Steven Spielberg's tribute to Looney Tunes
Tiny Toon Adventures which ran on the Fox network from 1991 to 1994 was an interesting series that was produced by Steven Spielberg and his Ambian Entertainment Company. It was a unqie combination of laughs, great animation, and paying homage at American Popular Culture. The stories were simple. The Looney Tunes characters were teaching the next generation of Tiny Toon Characters how to work in animated cartoons. What worked about the shows was two ways. It both made fun of and paid homage to recent movies like STAR TREK, STAR WARS, CLOSE ENOUNTERS, ET, JURASSIC PARK, INDIANA JONES, GODZILLA, AND THE TWILIGHT ZONE. wHICH THE charecters did in various episodes, and it also was Steven;s tribute to the work of the classic Looney Tune Directors; Friz Freling, Chuck Jones, and Robert McKimson whose work Steven enjoyed while growing up. Most of the episodes were funny and did work. Was certainly a more fitting tribute to the classic Warners cartoons and out shined the recent big joke shows like Baby Looney Tunes and Duck Dodgers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this show!
I love this show, including the time in the episode, about the Music Videos, they played the song I liked "Yappity Yak (Don't Come Back". Including, Plucky Duck, he's funny. I give this a [5 star] (5 out of 5).

5-0 out of 5 stars Parodies and digs galore...
This tape features two episodes, "Prom-ise Her Anything" and "thirteensomething", two of the better episodes in the entire series.
"Prom-ise Her Anything"(dir. Ken Boyer) is the story of the ACME Looniversity Junior Prom that takes over the minds of the inhabitants of ACME Acres. The toons are paired off, and the most obvious pairing, Buster & Babs, seems to have hit a snag... all in all the animation is the C team animation for the most part, squash and stretch rubberbands, but the gags are fun, if not the most original.
"thirteensomething"(dir. Jon McClenahan) a clever blend of 'thirtysomething' and 'Beverly Hills 90210' that starts with the opening credits, makes you feel like you missed the station break. An argument between Buster and Babs has Babs leave the show to find her way in a Prime Time melodrama called 'thirteensomething', the only drawback being the show only hires humans, no toons. This animation is the other 'A-List' animation I loved on this show, almost ANIME in its' renderings. A further trademark of this animation team are frequent profiles, awesome voice synch, and a greater sense of the "fourth wall",(or absence of).
This is one of the MUST HAVE Tiny Toons tapes, up there with the Music Television and How I Spent My Summer Vacation tapes. Few episodes are as fun to watch as "thirteensomething", the episode that shoots fun at everything, incuding itself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two better than average Tiny Toons episodes...
This tape features the episodes "Two-Tone Town" and "Fields of Honey".
The first episode, "Two-Tone Town"(dir. Ken Boyer), introduces you to the concept that all of the black-and-white Wanrer Bros. characters who DID NOT make the transition from B&W to color are in fact still around... just unemployed. This episode features the top-line animation that is used in "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" and the opening titles of Tiny-Toons, Animaniacs, and Freakazoid. These guys had the better budget and packed more detail into each frame than many other episodes. It also seems that the voice track is in better synch than "B" and "C" team episodes.
The second episode, "Fields of Honey"(dir. Ken Boyer), begins with Babs having some kind of identity problem that quickly turns into a "Field of Dreams" parody/tribute. The episode begins with "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" type animation... all squash and stretch, then transitions into the more standardized format seen in most episodes. It looks like it was produced by two different animation crews, then edited together. Not as "A-List" as the first episode, but still very fun to watch.
On the whole the tape is a good buy if you were not able to burn tapes archiving the episodes yourself. Good quality copies of this show are not easy to find, so until Time Warner/AOL starts moving these over to DVD format, I'll be picking up every tape I can.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars God, how I miss this show.
Every day when I was in elementary school, after school let out, I remember rushing off the bus and running down the street to my house, parking myself in front of the TV, and watching Tiny Toon Adventures. It was such a classic show; the characters (PLUCKY!!!), the stories, the references, the jokes, everything about this show was great. It's just another reason I love the '90s.

Ah, yes, I remember this one. I haven't seen it in years, but I know the whole thing: The They Might Be Giants song ("Particle Man" was hilarious with Plucky trying to box), Shirley the Loon singing "Nothing Compares 2 U", and, correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe this one also has "The Name Game". (They skip over Plucky, needless to say.) This one's a classic, as is almost every episode they ever made (not to mention "How I Spent My Vacation").

And now what kind of hogwash are today's kids being spoon-fed? "The Fairly Odd-Parents???" *sigh* Oh well, at least the tapes of this still exist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tiny Toons Episodes
These are some of the best episodes of tiny toons ever. Now that I am older, and I go back and view this tape, it is incredible to see how satiric some of the stuff in here is. The best parts are the sinead o'conner thing, the THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS videos (particle man and Istanbul was once Constantinople) and the the video game themed ballet music. 4-0 out of 5 stars monster mash
I had been searching for this title for sometime, as I had rented the film for my children a few years back and they have been singing the many songs from the movie ever since, which happen to be very catchy. My children and their friends absouletly loved the monster mash. In fact, when I vewied the movie to insure it was appropriate for my kids, I found myself laughing aloud. I can say that any child over 5 years old and adults as well, will get a kick out of this fun story.

4-0 out of 5 stars A FUN MOVIE, WITH A GOOD CAST
Monster Mash is about a girl and her boyfriend who get stranded in the middle of nowhere, and are forced to spend the night in a creepy old castle, with monsters galore! Candace Cameron stars in this film, and the acting is okay. It's supposed to be a musical campy horror-type film, and I found it fun. Though it was kind of odd, it's worth checking out!!! ... Nickelodeon presents five episodes of CatDog, the unlikely andoften repulsive tale of an animal who's (you guessed it) half cat, halfdog. With two heads, one body, and no hind legs, this freak of natureencounters innumerable reasons to go on mad chases, read trashy bookssuch as 1001 Uses for Hairballs, and argue with itself. Dog oftenyields to Cat's wishes. In Dog Gone, Cat convinces Dog to wearpants over his head and pose as Cat's hind quarters. CatDog's End goes one step further: Cat's ready for a real butt and leads Dog to the Better Bottoms clinic for a primeval separation. Hey, at least the kidswill learn five new synonyms for the word "bottom." To its credit, theartistic crew exhibits tremendous creativity and use of color. But theremust be a better way for 6-10 year olds to spend 45 minutes on anyafternoon, regardless of the weather. --Liane Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CatDog : Great for all generations.
My entire family loves catdog. If its on, someone shouts out and everyone watches it. I LOVE catdog and I'm ordering the videos right now!

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Funny Cartoon
"CatDog" is funny, cool, hillarious, stupendous, outraegous, great, and outstanding. I even liked the time when CatDog found their parents who are really not like CatDog. I also like Jim Cunnings (Cat) and Tom Kenny (Dog) who are the people who play CatDog. I give this ***** (5 out of 5).

Jim Cunnings' other works are the Captain of guards of "Shrek," Tiigger of "Winnie The Pooh", and Peter Pete of "A Goofy Movie," and "An Extremly Goofy Movie."

Tom Kenny's other works are SpongeBob Squarepants, Gary The Snail, Mr. SquarePants, Narrator, and Patchy the Pirate on "SpongeBob Squarepants," and The Narrator, Mitchell "Mitch" Mitchellson, and the Mayor on "The Powerpuff Girls."

So if you like these cartoons and movies you'll like Catdog.

After working on the Amanda Show on the First Season as Lobster #2, the show is HOT!!!! I still love tuning into the NICKELODEON channel and watching.

Amanda Bynes is nothing less than Super and all of the cast was so great. That is why this show deserves a ***** rating.

Love it,

5-0 out of 5 stars This is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that the Amanda Show is the best show on Nickelodeon. I can't believe they are not making any new episodes any more. I loved this show since the first time I saw it. No one can watch this show and not laugh out loud. I can't believe it is finally coming to DVD. I will watch this DVD all the time. My favorite character is Mr. Gullible. He is the best and funniest character. I also really like Courtney, who is played by Amanda. She is so funny and weird. I can't wait until this DVD comes out. I am going to get it the first day it comes out and watch it 2 or 3 times. Then I am going to show it to all my friends. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2-0 out of 5 stars not scooby doo
We rented this dvd and I was very disappointed. A major portion of the show doesn't even have scooby or shaggy in it. Glad we rented this one instead of buying it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Scooby Doo where are you (and Shaggy)?!
My kids love the Scooby Doo DVDs. We bought this one hoping to add more Scooby to choose from. The kids actually walked away from the TV. It was almost unrecognizable as a Scooby Doo cartoon. It was more like "Hannah-Barbara rips off Scooby Doo". Don't waste your money because you will just be disappointed with the whole thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH ALL OF YOU!!!?????
I did not have high expectations for this movie because of all of you, but it was great! See it before you judge it. Not planning to buy it , though. SEE IT!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother...
If you're a Scooby-Doo fan... then don't even bother with this one. The cover is deceptive. Scooby and Shaggy are barely in this one... and the rest of the gang is no where to be seen. It's not even worth the few dollars that the DVD is priced at.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Hanna-Barbera experience!
I wanted to see this for myself. Some people I knew saw it they said it stunk, but what do I know? i saw it, It was GREAT! This DVD is full of cool extra's. And the movie was totally awesome. I geuss this could bend either way some people may not like this because it only has 20 minutes tops of Scooby Doo but don't stop the movie. I repeat don't stop the movie. You'll find Arabian Nights enjoyable with old Hanna-Barbera favorites like Yogi Bear and Boo Boo and Magilla Gorilla as Alladin's fortunes and Sinbad. This movie can be a totally interesting way to learn about Arabian Nights. I give it an A + ! I don't care what the other people say, listen to me this movie is awesome, great, and cool at the same time!!!!!!!!!! ...

But if not, I have a feeling you'll like most everything else. ... Read more
