5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Poignant and Enlightening Movie!
You have to dig deep into your vocabulary to find the superlatives this almost unknown, yet brilliantly done motion picture is worthy of. Director Ryszard Bugajski brings to life this haunting yet mesmerizing tale of civilization gone berserk, and spiritual belief invoked to conquer the encroachment of a ruinous white man's culture on the environment. Set in the Canadian wilderness, this excellent movie captures on film a story of rage, and a harrowing action adventure, in which one man tortures another as punishment for his crimes against the environment. Graham Greene (Dances withWolves, Thunderheart) portrays Arthur, an imposing native American tribesman who is outraged by the destruction of his land from the local lumber mill owned by Bud Rickets (Michael Hogan). Into this wilderness steps Peter McGuire (Ron Lea), a city lawyer, trying to protect native American Indian land through the judicial process, until he meets Arthur. Enraged at the sight of his people's land being ruined, Arthur takes the law into his own hands, kidnapping Peter and Bud Rickets, forcing them into an unrelenting northern trek. This terrifying journey compels Peter to confront his naive liberalism, and causes Arthur to be the martyr in a struggle against a civilization out of control. This relatively low budget production features some outstanding cinematography, and a very revealing glimpse into the spiritual world and culture of Native Americans still living in harmony with their environment. If you are one of the many who missed this gem of a movie, make it a point to see it soon. You will be compelled to watch this one more than once, and it will probably find it's way into your personal library of favorite films, as it has mine. Excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Trickster Strikes Again
I didn't "like" this movie, but I respect it for taking a serious problem (corporate destruction of the environment) and using it to tell a story about one man's love-hate relationship to the problem; he both mourns the lost beauty of nature, and profits from it. Does that remind you of anyone?

This is told with great authenticity and integrity to the Native point of view; "Clearcut" is one of the first, best examples of Indian filmmaking, and it's great to see Native attitudes, values, humor, suffering and wisdom depicted after all those decades of Hollywood shoot-'em-ups.

The Indians in this movie are smart, funny, PO'd and in charge. Hee-yah!

Yes, the film is shocking and has some gruesome scenes. Yes, it's sometimes hard to understand; you have to pay close attention, or watch it more than once. The character of Arthur, superbly played by Graham Greene, is a conjuring of the White lawyer's own contradictory impulses; he wants revenge, and Arthur gives it to him, but then the lawyer doesn't like the revenge he's summoned up. The key scene takes place in a sweat lodge; Arthur is a submerged spirit the lawyer sees in a vision, and having once called him up, he cannot keep the tragedy from unfolding, any more than the ancient Greeks could.

Beware of entertaining the Trickster. He's likely to turn around and trick YOU.

Besides the gory scene of the papermill owner being "debarked" (that is, skinned alive), the film's biggest weakness is that it is a melodrama; this is not, as some have said, a character study. Cliches abound here; we learn nothing of the lawyer's history or personality. He's simply a type -- just as the thieving industrialist is. The title of the film works on two levels; not only is the forest clear cut, so is everything else here, the characters, the value systems, the issues. But that makes the story easier to follow. We know whom to root for, the Indians and the trees.

The cinematography is, as advertised, spectacular, but so are the details of the set decoration, especially in the wise old man's shack on the reservation. He's got pipes but no running water, despite the "improvements" the government promised when it appropriated his land and settled him on the res.

I was privileged to watch this movie with a two-spirited Apache who draws great strength from this film. On the day I wrote this, "Clearcut" was Amazon's #6 bestseller in a town in the Canadian Northwest; that says something important. If the Whites don't always get it, the Natives seem to. Maybe the most important message here is that Graham Greene's become a bona fide star in the world's most glamourous medium, decades after Hollywood told us the Indians were all justly annihilated. I guess the Trickster bites Hollywood, too.++

2-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but harmful
I enjoyed the movie, but I found the depiction of Greene's character disturbing. He was reduced to a violent savage, and the white lawyer ends up the hero in the end. Does this stereotype really need a reprise?

Be warned: Gruesome scenes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Graham Greene's worst movie
I bought Clearcut because it features Graham Greene, who has done so well in other movies such as Dances With Wolves and Thunderheart. Unfortunately, Greene didn't perform well and the script was awful. The violence depicted in the movie had no point, and the environmental isses that supposedly led to the violence were not resolved. The basic message is: Don't bother watching this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's heartwarming, funny and the characters are so real. Graham Greene and Tom Jackson both give an excellent performance. It's one of the best ensemble casts you will ever see. I've watched it a hundred times, at least! Get it, you won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Medicine River
Medicine River is a delightful movie. I am a Graham Greene fan, and I have watched this film many times since purchasing it. It's funny, warm, and absolutely charming. If you are a Graham Greene or Tom Jackson fan, this is a 'must see' and I highly recommend that you add it to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real life and Real heart
I use this film in my Native American Images in Film course when I teach; it was one of the first movies to reach out beyond some of the stereotypes of our people and reveal us as real folk with real hearts and real human challenges and the humour to get through it...Sheila Tousey, Tom Jackson--in fact, every actor in here-- does us proud (and half of them remind me of family or folk I know...)as characters, as actors and as ani'yvnwiya--"real people".

4-0 out of 5 stars loved it
I thought the convolutions over the fella buying the basketball jerseys and how he went about paying for those jerseys was amazingly similar to personal experience. the movie properly addressed individual patterns on returning home and the general "what's going on" thoughts many have upon returning home after living in the city for a time. the movie was great for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
Humorous story about a contemporary Native American careerist squaring his ethnic loyalties and identity with career demands. Greene is entertaining, and it's great to see Indian humor shine through and characters who aren't stereotypes. ... Read more

I seen this when there on September 11 at my cousions house. It was so funny but Schemer was so irriated. My favorite scene in the video is Percy, James and the Fruitful Day because it was something that has to do about Thomas the Tank Engine. I wish the episode was Thomas, Percy & The Mail Train or Thomas, Percy & The Dragon. Cool video for big fans of Thomas The Tank Engine or Shining Time Station. 4-0 out of 5 stars If you liked "Smoke Signals............"
This a very good movie with much of the same stars as Smoke Signals. The story line is also very similar......
A young Anishinabe man comes to grips with his grandfather after learning it was he who caused a fire that killed his mother and the father of another young anishinabe man. The other young man is played by Evan Adams. The journey in Smoke Signals is replaced by a horse race storyline, and the two young men are rivals instead of friends. Other wise this is very similar. Not as good as Smoke Signals, but a good movie if you take it on its own merits. A little high priced at 25-26$.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritrider, an uplifting, positive and beautiful story!
This rich and well constructed story begins with the camera following Jessie Threebears as he races his bike through city streets. He is a street wise high school boy placed in a foster care home. His social worker visits to tell him that he is to be reconciled with his family and his tribe. Jessie has big dreams of competing in the Tour de France and does not want to leave the only life he knows for the reservation. The tribe greets him warmly but Jessie is angry and resentful. Slowly, he learns new truths. This story addresses many themes--life on the reservation, adolescent alienation from family and community, forgiveness, belonging and self acceptance. It's a great story with a cast of some great Native American actors. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "a play of destiny"
Produced and directed by Jack Leustig, and hosted by Kevin Costner, this second volume is one of the best of the 8 tape series, and though it has a horrifying tale of slaughter and conquest, it also has much beauty as it shows the artifacts of the Aztecs and illustrates their history with excellent paintings, graphics from many sources, maps, and the cinematography of Gary Steele; the score by Peter Buffett also enhances the film.
It is narrated by Gregory Harrison, and the readers of the manuscripts, many written by eyewitnesses of that era, are Edward James Olmos, Tony Plana, Castulo Guerra, Alma Martinez, Robert Beltran, East Carlo, and Jesse Borrego.
Nahuatl anthropologist Eustacio Celestino, and Nahuatl village leader Marcial Camilo are interviewed, both speaking in their native toungue, which is an intriguing and lovely language.

The record of events begins with "The Valley of Mexico (650 AD)", where "cycles of nations had been played out", # 2 is "The Rise of the Aztecs (1300 AD)", and the building of the massive city of Tenochtitlan, and the powerful empire that thrived there. # 3, "The Invasion of Mexico (1519 AD)", with the landing of Cortez, and # 4, "The Fall of the Aztec", with its many massacres, the murder of Moctezuma, and the end of the empire, though as Sr. Celestino explains, not of the people or the culture.
I recommend viewing the entire set, as each volume is a facet of this dramatic past, and though much of it is unpleasant, it is a part of our heritage, and the knowledge and understanding of it enriches our future. An informative series, it is visually interesting, and although in only 49 minutes per segment one is not going to get too much detail, it is a good way to get an overview of the history of the Indian Nations. ... Grizzly Falls is a gorgeous, hopelessly old-fashioned film that's unlikely to attract the viewership it ought to--none of the characters is particularly witty or clever; special effects, save a few stunts with a bear, are nil; and the irony level is at an all-time low. In other words, prying the kids away from Pokémon to watch this movie may be a challenge, but it's worth the effort. Daniel Clark plays Harry, a lad of around 8 who accompanies Tyrone (Bryan Brown), his thrill-seeking dad, on a mission to the Colorado Rockies, where he intends to be the first to capture a live grizzly. It's the early 1900s, so the means by which Tyrone plans to snare the beast aren't especially humane--at a saloon stop, he hires five tough guys, one with a team of hounds. Then the hunt begins. The hounds' punishing master quickly emerges as a villain; when he and two dogs are mauled by the grizzly, he exacts revenge by caging the bear's cubs. She, in classic righteous-mother mode, retaliates by dragging Harry into the woods. What follows is a desperate chase through beautiful countryside by tireless Tyrone and the blossoming of an impossible boy-bear friendship. Mizzy, as Harry comes to call the bear, protects him from dangers of the wild while leading the boy to her caged cubs, who are traveling east with the ornery houndskeeper. There's a showdown when the animal family is reunited, but Harry and Tyrone extinguish a series of confrontations handily, then move on to cement their own iffy relationship. The surplus of action scenes in this PG-rated movie will wow kids 8 and up, and only jaded viewers will summon the callousness to crack wise about its unapologetic portrayal of blind loyalty and courage at all costs. --Tammy La Gorce ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie for all ages!
It's a great tale about a young boy who becomes a friendly hostage of a grizzly bear while on a bear hunting expedition with his father in the northwest. Things go awry and the boy is taken by the bear only to be chased by his father and his team of men. The rugged adventure is only the beginning of this entertaining and relationship bonding movie between man and animal. It's perfect for all ages. Kids can watch it as the movie offers good moral values without hard language or adult situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wholesome family movie.
We rented this movie two nights ago, and our whole family thoroughly enjoyed it. It is the story of a boy and his father who go on an expedition in the Rocky Mountains, to catch a grizzly bear and bring it back alive. Along the way, the boy gets separated from his father and ends up with a momma grizzly bear who has taken a liking to him. She takes care of him as they journey together to find her cubs. During this time, the father is on a desperate hunt to find his son. The scenery is beautiful, the animals are wonderful, and the entire movie is excellently produced. The father and son learn a lot about what love and respect for nature really means. I was impressed with this movie. It is rated PG for what they called "nature violence", which is some animal attacks on other animals, and one time where the grizzly attacks one of the men in the hunting party. This may scare small children, but my son is 7 1/2 and he loved it. He was so interested in the story, that he didn't talk all the way through it, he just watched as amazed as I was. I also didn't hear a foul word in the whole movie. There may be a "damn" in there somewhere, but I didn't catch it. I never saw this movie come out in the theaters, but it sure is worth renting. I would recommend it to any family with school age and above. My husband and I liked it just as much as our son. We give it an A+.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done and fascinating!
I learned a great deal from this video. In one condensed hour, the film discussed the life of many Northeast "Indian" nations encountered in the years before and during the American Revolutionary War. The film is clear and easy to understand, yet explains the changing political and economic terrain of Indian nations as they confronted the arrival of "Whites."

With clear maps, plain-spoken narration, and lovely illustrations, the film evokes a time when Indians chose military alliances with French, British, and American forces--a time when Indians had to come to grips with the power of several European forces encroaching on their lands. We learn of changes in the Indian political-economy (as trading with Whites took precedence over normal activities), the slaughter of wildlife for gain in trade, and the vicious enslavement of Indians by Europeans.

The film is sympathetic to Indians, without being nostalgic or naive. Indians are not victims or monolithic in the film. They are political actors trying to survive. At times they are at war with one another, at times they effectively resist European power, and at times they are brutally slain and attacked with a cruelty mastered by Europeans. For example, the film discusses biological warfare (blankets w/ smallpox were given to many tribes), and George Washington's all-out assault on Indian villages and crops. (See Max Mintz's _Seeds of Empire_ for a rich account of Washington's brutal campaigns.)

Many more topics are briefly addressed: Pontiac's Rebellion, the US Revolutionary War, and the political amalgamation of Indian nations (who formed confederacies). And, in a refreshing change, White-Americans are given their voice in 18th century quotes, rather than 20th century ones. In other words, they are not politically corrected--Whites are given their full racist voice and hatred of Indians.

As a college instructor, I am buying this film (and perhaps others in the 500 Nations series) to show my students. I'm sure that they will benefit from this honest, complex, and rich look at early encounters between Europeans and Native Americans. Hopefully they will learn as much as I did. ... Read more
