4-0 out of 5 stars Good and Underrated
This movie features John Wayne not as a cowboy but as a football coach. It is not one of his most famous ones probably because it is not the genre of what most fans think of when they think of John Wayne, comedy. It is a good movie though. When I first watched it I was amazed. Everyone (from Wayne to the actress that plays his daughter) does an excellent job. John Wayne's first role was in a silent in which he played a football player, and he also played football at USC for a couple of years with Ward Bond. So it is a subject he knows well. Overall, it gives light to a new side of the Duke, the comical side (which isn't bad). It isn't one of the best, I grant you, but it is great because it shows Duke's acting talents with a great script and cast.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like this movie
I thought this was a very good movie. It was different having John Wayne as a football coach instead of a cowboy. I reccomend this movie to people who like John Wayne movies, and to people who like older movies. The reason why I watch these movies is because my family likes them so I watch them to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spirit Along the Way
Football Coach John Wayne and College Rector Charles Coburn combine in an underrated, light comedy which defines liberal arts under religious auspices. The values of both men are profound; the flaws, transient. Purpose transcends both plot and budget as the heroes struggle for ideals, make mistakes, and begin again. Their stories reflect the human condition of all who strive maturely. You can define life by people like this. There is response to grace in them. And its warming fire reaches out finally to all who perceive. Definitely worth seeing!

3-0 out of 5 stars Humanism Along the Way
Trouble, collegiate and personal, meets graced optimism in St. Anthony's (and Father Rector Charles Coburn's) faltering venture in classical higher education as Coach Wayne (pursued by protagonist Reed) tackles real problems with "reel" banter and plan-in-reserve. Chuck Connors ably assists light-hearted scheme to save all as nostalgia reigns and life again turns to academic pursuits. There's enough truth in the myth to make it resound in the souls of alumni/aeworld-wide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful. So Beautiful
A magnificent depiction of one of the most wonderful and important events in history. The movie is entertaining, to be sure (Gilbert Roland is a hoot), but it's much more than that -- it's inspiring. The story of Our Lady of Fatima (as detailed in William Walsh's book, as well as in this excellent film) speaks eloquently of the Beauty and Glory of the Queen of Heaven. How can we not, how dare we not, heed her message and her request -- and her warning? The Blessed Mother does not look kindly on being displeased. Recall Our Lady's reaction when told by Saint Catherine Laboure that the delay in striking the Miraculous Medal was a result of Father Aladel's scepticism. Said Our Lady: "Never mind. He is my servant, and would fear to displease me."

4-0 out of 5 stars The Anti-Communist Virgin Mary
My dad told me that he first saw this movie on TV in November 1963, on KHJ (now KCAL) channel 9 in Los Angeles, the Sunday that John Kennedy was buried. There had been so much televised and rerun that weekend about JFK, the murder of Oswald and the funeral, that channel 9 thought it would show this movie about the Miracle of Fatima which had not been shown on TV before that night, out of what they said was historical interest (and not forgetting that JFK was Catholic), but was really just to take a break from all the intensity of the weekend. So it has a special meaning to him. I found it interesting and even appealing, but not the great movie that "Song of Bernardette" was.

The film itself is a product of its time, don't you think? I read a book that said that Jack Warner, the head of Warner Bros. studios had made a movie sympathetic to the Communists during WW2 when they were our allies. Just a few years later, during the McCarthy Communist witch-hunting era, Warner was being accused of having Communist sympathies because he made that film. So, just to get Congress off his back, he made this movie because of the eerie prophecy made by the Virgin Mary in 1917, before the Russian Revolution, "In Russia there is an evil scheme to destroy the peace of the earth..." This seemed to be a way to show that Heaven was on the side of America. I read the review here that says that Fatima is a hoax. But this prophecy came out of left field. There was no way any peasant in Fatima could have known about Lenin's plans back then. Explain that, okay?

The (fictitious) character of Hugo (Gilbert Roland) is a welcome breath of fresh air in contrast to Susan Whitney's breathless, prayerful attitude. Yes, she was way to old to play Lucia but, despite the other reviewer here who thinks it is part of racist attitudes to show a green-eyed girl playing a Portugese, this girl was under contract to the studio and she was "available". And Susan's heavy, unplucked eyebrows make up for her green eyes. It is a shame that there are still witch hunters looking for evil where none existed. Jack Warner was known to be tight with a dollar and if he had a girl close enough to the type, why waste money finding someone else?

Hugo is a necessary "Everyman", who starts off as a roguish agnostic and is convinced of the reality of God by show's end. He is as real as any other literary creation such as Jonah, or even Adam and Eve, to show the effects of God's grace.

The movie is simple and straightforward telling its story with few embellishes. I also found Richard Hale as the parish priest very powerful in his acting, striking a false note only when he, too, is converted to belief and starts distributing signs of the cross to the crowds during the dance of the sun.

There are many incidents in the Fatima story left out because they would detract from the basic story - 3 children against the vile Socialist establishment that would rob people of God. I know the story could be better told, but this will do as an introduction.

Be warned! As a special effect, "The "Dance of the Sun" is not very well done, even with the movie technology of the early 1950s. Unhappily, the sun does not "dance" -it just zooms to earth. The effect is just the sun in a lens being enlarged. You can see the clouds through it as it gets bigger.

But don't be afraid to see this movie, even if you're not Catholic and don't know anything about the Virgin's appartions at Fatima. This movie will acquaint you with the basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Movie!!
I have fond memories of when I was a little girl in the 70's probably about 7 or 8 years old watching The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima on TV one Easter and being captivated by the story and just really liking the movie and years later when this movie was shown on one of those classic movie networks I taped it and even though the film and acting isn't quite as excellent as The Song of Bernadette (Which is also based on actual accounts about a young girl seeing visions of The Virgin Mary) I still think The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima is good and I would like for it to be put on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima
I have viewed this film many times & at one time had a copy of the film of which I loaned & never had it returned to me. After a long search I finally found it again & will never let it out of my hands again. I'll look at it often over & over.
I have reviewed some of the comments that are favorable & those not so favorable for one reason or another. All I can say is this is BEAUTIFUL & should be seen on TV more often than it is. There are many movies shown on TV that are an insult & give nothing to our intelligence & growth. Believe it or not there are still many who are unaware of the Miracle at Fatima in 1917. The message is crutial to our times. Our Lady needs to be better known if there is to be PEACE!!!! Lucia, the oldest seer is still living & reaffirms the events in Fatima. Francisco & Jacinta are deceased & have been declared Saints. With regard to the quality of acting, I also found this to be very good. Even if it were not, it would not distracted me from the message the film had to offer. I hope to buy more of this film in the future & distribute them as gifts. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What a series! Blond-haired, blue-eyed Hebrews!
Never before in the history of mankind has there been more blond-haired, blue-eyed Hebrews in the Middle East! I say this tongue in cheek ofcourse. This short lived TV series, which may go by two titles on the web, was filmed in Paige, Arizona in the late 1970's. The continuous use of practically the same set every third episode and a minority of extras as a crowd of hundreds of thousands of Jews should give the viewers an indication of the budget.

The Review: Lot splits with Abraham and moves toward Sodom, gets captured, freed and eventually rises to some degree of leadership in Sodom. Lot eventually meets up with glowing angels and they shoot laser beams. Wow, that's neat! Sodom is destroyed and Lots wife turns into "BEST YET Salt" but I'm not sure if she's iodized (iodine treated description on BEST YET products). This low budget series features Ed Aames (Lot) and Gene Barry (Abraham) was an interesting idea for an episode and should've stayed just an idea. ... Read more

Working with a theme and history that's obviously dear to her heart, first-time writer-director Julie Dash's exquisitely alive film chronicles the last days of the Gullah, an Americanized West African people in danger of losing their identity. Dash makes up for some overly schematic dialogue and an occasionally pokey pace with some strong performances (particularly Cora Lee Day as the sternly matriarchal Nana) and an absolutely wonderful visual sense (kudos should also go to her ace cinematographer Arthur Jafa, whose dazzlingly sumptuous imagery surely inspired Jonathan Demme's later Beloved). A rapturously textured, wholly mesmerizing glimpse into the Gullah culture. --Andrew Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must see movie!
Daughters of the Dust is a richly evocative and absolutely beautiful film. Julie Dash masterfully combines her ten years of reseach in the moving film about a Gullah family on the verge of migration to the north. The performances are very strong and very moving. This movie must be seen more than once to capture the full meaning, but it is well worth the time. I would also recommend reading the screenplay which offers many insights into this incredibly deep and moving film. It is revolutionary in that it lovingly portrays wonderful strong and beautiful black women and tells their story in a manner that is free of sterotypes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A visual miracle
Julie Dash's film "Daughters of the Dust" is a movie of such enchanting beauty as to leave you spellbound. It's the story of a Gullah family in the Sea Islands of Georgia, preparing to relocate to the mainland in 1902. The Sea Islands, as Julie Dash tells us in the companion volume written for the film, were the Ellis Islands of the transatlantic slave trade, the dropping off point and processing center for the forced immigration of untold millions of Africans. Because of this, African cultural influences are more strongly rooted here than anywhere else in the United States. At the head of the family is Nana Peazant, a matriarch whose quiet strength has seen her through slavery to the hard days of Reconstruction and beyond. Her children and their husbands and wives have decided to seek a future in the more modern environment of the mainland. They've grown tired of the backwardness of the island and want to spread their wings. But as Nana, who resolutely determines to stay put, has foreseen, they can remove themselves from the island, but they can't remove the island from within themselves, any more than they can remove the indigo dye of the island from their hands; they are marked forever by a part of their culture that will never go away. Along with Nana, we meet Yellow Mary, a cousin who has returned from Cuba as a fallen woman, unconsciously clinging to her roots as hard as she tries to pull away from them; Haggar, a bitter, possessive woman who attempts to hold onto her two young daughters, MyOwn and Iona ("I Own Her"), even as they attempt to break away and make their own destiny; Viola, using her hidebound Christianity as a shield to hide from her African heritage, and Eula and Eli, coping with the devastation of Eula's rape and impregnation by a white man, whose Unborn Child is the narrator of this film. There is heartbreak for Nana, watching her family depart from the home that has been theirs for generations, and for Haggar, whose daughter Iona decided to make her own destiny by eloping with her Native American lover. Julie Dash has managed to create film so real and so evocative that it transports us right into the action; we are there on the beach, feeling the heat, smelling the gumbo cooking, and listening to the exquisite tonalities of the Gullah dialect. The acting by all the characters is excellent throughout, with special mention for standout performances by Cora Lee Day as Nana Peazant, Alva Rogers as Eula Peazant, and Barbara O. Jones as Yellow Mary; but the real star in this film is the exquisite cinematography which is unlike anything I have ever seen in any film. The movie is so visually gorgeous that one just sits and watches awestruck. An equally strong script, well acted by the cast, gives the movie a depth and meaning that makes the film worth watching over and over. "Daughters of the Dust" is much more than a movie; it's an emotionally charged history lesson of a little known place and a little known culture. It remains inside you, a part of you, long after the final credits have ended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is a must see. As an African American women who loves the stories of my people I find this film to be one that must be viewed. One must know from where they came to know where they are going, because a people that forget their past are doomed to repeat it in the future.
I implore all that read this review to heed my words and add this wonderful work to their collection of movies to be viewed again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for the Gift of storytelling
What a great day it was when the pen hit the paper on this one! If I were only to hear the words and not see the picture my minds eye would still capture the beauty. Thank you Ms. Dash for a very necessary tool inwhich I will use to educate my children on our history. And if you never do anything else, rest assured with this one you've done enough. Like Toni Morrison's "Beloved" your "Daughters of the Dust" is so very necessary.

2-0 out of 5 stars A challenging, yet visually arresting film
I recently watched Julie Dash's daughter of the dust for a class I am currently enrolled in. While the cinematography is absolutely beautiful, I found little else in the film that would justify more than a single viewing. The narrative itself is confusing and very hard to follow. The plot of the film is quite simple: a large family of Ibo Landing residents decide to move from the island they currently inhabit to the mainland US against the wishes of the family matriarch. However, the way in which the narrative is presented could have been handled in a more straight-forward way. Because the film does express some important political opinions concerning feminism and explores an aspect of US history and black culture that might otherwise go overlooked, it is worth watching, but once was enough for me. I'm giving the film two stars for the cinematography. If you are in the mood for a challenge you may enjoy this film, but if you want an interesting or entertaining film, try again! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I did not like the movie.
I honestly did not like the movie more than the book. Why? because the movie just focus on some of the events of the book. Not the major events. I like the book it gives more details and more understanding (clear).

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie was to different from the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Grow a real beard!
Starring Gene Barry (Abraham, with a really bad wig and beard), Ed Ames (Daniel Boone) and Ross Martin (Wild, Wild West).

This episode starts with the accidental killing of an enemies son by Abraham, is this in the Bible? Hmm? And continues on with the plot of Hagar and her uncle (Martin) first trying rescue Ishmael, a very passive (toward Isaac) but precocious Ishmael (weird) and then attempting to supersede Abrahams desire that Isaac be the inheritor over his older brother. The episode ends with the sacrifice scenes. Again I ask you. Is this the Bible? Barry gives a good perfomance but he should've grown the beard himself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sad
Poor acting, sad Biblical Interpretation.....The producer has turned a pivotal Biblical event ( for three faiths) into a Hollywood production about jealously and geneology..Save your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the Abraham I know!
Aside from the pitiful acting, this account of the life of Abraham & Isaac is 90% fiction. More attention is given to a feud between Abraham & a neighboring warlord (which is not found in scripture) & a plot by Hagar's uncle to have Isaac killed so that Ishmael can inherit Abraham's fortune (also not in scripture) than to the actual account of Abraham's struggle over God's command to sacrifice his son. That scene -- supposedly the thust of the movie) -- lasts less than three minutes & involves no struggle or suspense whatsoever, Don't waste your money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Heroes of the Bible: Abraham's Sacrifice
It is hard to believe the film makers here could take a compelling Biblical story like Abraham's almost sacrifice of his only son and turn it into this tedious made for television slop.

Gene Barry is Abraham, who must face the local evil king who is trying to steal his flock of sheep. Barry accidentally kills the king's son in the dullest action scene ever committed to film. Abraham's wife, Sarah, is barren, so he fathered a son with Egyptian slave Hagar (inexplicably played by Lainie Kazan). Hagar and her uncle, Ross Martin, decide to plot against Abraham and his wife so Hagar's son Ishmael can inherit the flock of sheep. Three angels visit Abraham and announce Sarah (Fred MacMurray's wife from "My Three Sons) will be pregnant with a son. The three angels also promise to return when the boy is born, and yet we never see them again. Sarah has a boy, Isaac, and Kazan and Ishmael are banished out of the tribe, with nothing more than some bread, water, and a hopeful narration proclaiming how wonderful things turn out for Ishmael. Martin kidnaps Isaac, gives him to the king, and is promptly executed for dealing with the evil king. Won't scheming Egyptian slave uncles who did short lived cult TV series with Robert Conrad ever learn? Isaac is saved by Abraham, with a little help from God, and the final nail biting thirty seconds are devoted to God's requirement that Abraham sacrifice his beloved son.

Ouch. Gene Barry is good as Abraham, all beard and flowing robes. The rest of the cast tries, but they would not make it through your average junior high school tryouts for "Our Town." The "action" here is terribly choreographed. The direction is insipid and borders on inane. The screenplay is full of flowery, Biblical-sounding language, but fails the cast by taking the familiar story and turning it into a bad episode of "Knots Landing." This was filmed on location in Page, Arizona, and obviously in the middle of winter, since even in interior scenes the actors' breathing is visible. The special effects are a joke, consisting of old stock footage. Clocking in at fifty minutes, this feels twice as long.

This is an episode in a mini-series entitled "Greatest Heroes of the Bible," and I can only hope the other episodes are better. "Abraham's Sacrifice" is not as heartbreaking as the viewers'.

This is not rated and contains some physical violence. ... Read more

Starring Lew Ayres (Noah) and Eve Plumb (Jan of Brady Bunch fame).

Portraying the daughter-in-law of Noah sold into slavery prior to the flood it looked like fair skinned Jan needed some Coppertone. It should be said that Miss Plumb took another Noah "role" in the biblical comedy "And God Spoke." She played Noah's wife this time. The sons of Noah beardless? Maybe there was a mange epidemic among the young ship builders, but Lew Ayres gives a good performance. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Joseph in Egypt with a beard and sunstroke
Starring Sam Bottoms (a fair haired Joseph with a beard in Egypt? He looks a little like Bob Larson, former radio demonologist out of Denver), Sorrell Brooke (Dukes of Hazzard), Walter Brooke, Bernie Kopell (Doc from Love Boat, Get Smart) and John Larrouquette (Night Court).

The episode chronicles Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers (Larrouquette is a really tall Hebrew. The only brother of the 12 that had a beard looked very confused and perhaps on mood altering chemicals), bought by Potipher (Kopell: a hen pecked, smarmy official) and eventually becomes 2nd in command of Egypt. Good perfomance by Walter Brooke. Sam Bottoms looks about as non-semite as Abba does with the fair skin and hair. Were there Swedes in Egypt?

1-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Heroes of the Bible: Joseph in Egypt
Save your money. Buy used. I could not believe how short the movie is. Joseph is miscast, the scenery is lousy and it is over priced. This is the kind of movie that should be used as a bonus for x numbers of movies bought.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Joseph in Egypt" (1978)
This is quite a good telling of the Biblical story of Joseph the Patriach, part of the late 1970's T.V. films the "Greatest Heroes of the Bible".

There were a few minor flaws, such as the story spending too brief a time with Joseph serving in Potiphar's house, and then too long with his time in prison. And the final, all important reconciliation with his brothers is handled in just a few brief minutes. And of course the actors, being familiar T.V. figures of the time, are a bit hard to imagine in that "far away and long ago" story feeling.

But, all in all, this is a reasonable account, and is worth viewing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches forgiveness
A surprisingly accurate recounting of Joseph's trials and his faith when his brothers sold him into slavery. The story teaches about strength in faith, that wisdom is God's gift--not our own, and of the power of forgiveness. I am now very interested in viewing the other videos in this series. (Besides all of the above, it was fun to recognize and place some of the actors' faces.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Riveting Tale!!
OK, so this is not "The Ten Commandments," or any number of the early 60's blockbusters, but it's a good film nonetheless.

The young shepherd boy battles a mighty giant, and you see courage against overwhelming odds. A small Israeli army is holding off the Philistines, but it will take a miracle to defeat these pagans. And when the giant Goliath appears (really remarkable, with Ted Cassidy in the lead), and Goliath challenges the Israelites to combat, God sends an unlikely hero armed only with a sling and his faith, and soon the Philistines will know the power of David's conviction and the might of his God in this inspiring tale of trust and triumph.

This is a good film, as earlier stated, and it's about 50 minutes long, and it stays pretty much to the biblical account. There wasn't too much deviation from the story line, and you need to distance yourself from the well-known actors, otherwise you might be playing Siskel and Ebert, and trying to figure out who the best portrayal was. Put that stuff away, and enjoy the film, because it's highly recommended!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ted Cassidy in "David and Goliath"
"The Greatest Heroes of the Bible" ineptitude continues with this blase recreation of the epic fight between shepherd David and giant warrior Goliath.

Roger Kern is the eager young David who goes to the front of a stalemated war between King Saul's army and that of John Dehner, who plays a king whose name I did not catch in the opening credits, thanks to lousy audio on the videotape. David is taking bread to his brothers, one of who is Daniel J. Travanti, and the army meets up with Goliath, played by the late and underappreciated Ted Cassidy. Cassidy sounds like a modern day professional wrestler, and looks like one too, dressed in a trojan outfit and spouting insults like "vermin" and "wormy." Lord general Hugh O'Brian convinces King Saul, the awful Jeff Corey, to let David fight Goliath so O'Brian can move his tens of men into position to attack the tens of Dehner's troops.

David and Goliath meet, Goliath cannot seem to make any of his javelins take the little shepherd out, and as O'Brian gets his men in position, David hits Goliath in the forehead with a stone and kills him. What follows is a couple of dozen men running around and whacking each other with plastic swords in one of the least bloody battles ever filmed.

Like a bad car accident, I cannot seem to look away from this series. The B cast looks properly ashamed to be in this thing. The Magnum Entertainment/Guiding Image video release is also only thirty seven minutes long, as opposed to "TGHOFTB: Abraham's Sacrifice," which was fifty five minutes long. The end credits list Ann Doran and other actresses, but there are no women at all in this video version, indicating cuts. Here, the cast is listed at the beginning, but not the crew, so I have no idea who wrote or directed this unvaliant try.

There are good movies based on stories from the Bible, and then there is this. "The Greatest Heroes of the Bible: David and Goliath" feels like a rock to the forehead. I cannot recommend it.

Unrated, this contains physical violence.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was made very well
This film was very well done. David and Goliath is a very fun story of the Bible. The best part that I really liked is that the movie used God's name Jehovah. Hardly any movie uses God's name Jehovah. The name of the only true God, David worshiped when he was alive.

5-0 out of 5 stars very accurate
I enjoyed this film very much. It was very accurate. The writers of it used God's name Jehovah, widly used by the Israelites during David's time. ... Read more
