5-0 out of 5 stars A movie that's--sadly!--still one-of-a-kind
When it was released in 1982, MAKING LOVE was publicized as the first film from a major Hollywood studio to take an honest look at homosexuality. Today, even in our more tolerant social climate, the movie remains just about the only film from a major Hollywood studio to take an honest look at homosexuality. MAKING LOVE is a compassionate, sensitive examination of one man coming to discover, and accept, that he is gay.

Zack (Michael Ontkean) and Claire (Kate Jackson) are a young, attractive and successful married couple; he is a physician and she is a television producer. They have just bought a new home and talk about having a child. But Zack begins to question his sexual identity and to close himself off from his wife. Then he meets Bart (Harry Hamlin), a sexually adventurous gay man who forces Zack to come to terms with his sexual feelings.

Although MAKING LOVE is nearly twenty years old, the only things dated about the movie are the clothing and hairstyles. There have certainly been other Hollywood movies that deal with homosexuality (PHILADELPHIA, IN AND OUT, etc.). But most of these movies seem oddly hesitant to address difficult issues or deflect them by using humor. By contrast, MAKING LOVE presents with complete honesty a man learning to accept that he is gay, along with all of the conflicted feelings and painful choices this involves.

Barry Sandler's script is outstanding. It employs a device that today has become an annoying cliche: characters sharing their inner feelings by directly addressing the camera. But in this film, the device really works, thanks to honest writing and performances.

All three lead actors are excellent, giving us portraits of believable, imperfect human beings who nonetheless try to do their best with the situation that confronts them. A special word of praise must go to Kate Jackson. Certainly Jackson's TV work (CHARLIE'S ANGELS, SCARECROW AND MRS. KING) never gave her the chance to play such an intelligent, fully-rounded character. Jackson is excellent and in a few scenes is so thoroughly convincing that she breaks your heart.

Arthur Hiller's direction is understated and eloquent. And Leonard Rosenman's musical score is superb. His score helps us to recognize the movie for what it is: a tender and bittersweet love story. For example, early on there is a scene in which Zack has a painful meeting with a cancer patient and, distraught over his inability to help her, goes cruising for a sexual partner. Rosenman's musical score helps us to see that Zack's act is not cheap or sensational but instead is an attempt by a lonely, confused man to find emotional connection.

A movie of exceptional quality, MAKING LOVE should be much better known. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for an intellegent, compassionate presentation of the many emotional issues surrounding coming to acceptance of homosexuality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to the HEART of the matter!
To say this film is still groundbreaking would be a stretch, but it still hits home. In 1982, theater goers were either exiting quickly or more wisely, staying to marvel at this film's honesty and heart and its winning performances.

Kate Jackson, Michael Ontkean and Harry Hamlin turn in a powerhouse effort in this Authur Hiller film about a career successful married couple, Claire and Zack Elliot (Jackson and Ontkean) who must face the reality that their union is not all it seems. After eight years of marriage, Zack's repressed homosexuality begins to surface. Enter handsome writer Bart Mcguire (Hamlin), who innocently meets Zack in the ordinary circumstance of a doctor's visit. Bart has been around the gay scene for some time, and is quite happy in his world of one night stands and conquests....or is he?

How all this unfolds is great viewing. "Making Love" has it's soap opera moments and is somewhat dated, but the performances and overall writing and direction overcome these slight flaws. Handsome Ontkean is dead on as the confused yet well intentioned Zack. Whatever spoken or written about this film hurting Ontkean's career is trivial, this remains his best work to date. Hamlin is almost distracting in a role that was obviously well researched complete with subtle mannerisms. Kate Jackson turns in one of her best yet tender performances in a film that remains a cornerstone in gay cinema.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE DVD???
This movie has always held a special place in my collection. It reminds me of growing up and coming to terms with life. The performances of Kate Jackson, Michael Ontkean, Harry Hamlin and Wendy Hiller are emotionally charged. Some may say it's an outdated film, but it never fails to bring a tear to my eye when the main characters come to accept their past and how their lives have evolved. I'll never forget seeing it at the theater.
I remember when Zack and Bart kissed, some girl in the audience
laughed out loud. For me, it was a very touching moment and that laughter really bothered me at the time. Thankfully, people are more accepting of gay relationships now.
I am hoping that the studios will provide this gem on DVD soon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Honey, I'm Gay
A silly soap opera about a young doctor, happily married to a beautiful woman who discovers that he's gay. The homosexual theme is handled gingerly and with sympathy, but the story is overly sentimental and comes off as trite and naive. The happy ending fails to touch the heart.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy early effort
When released in 1982, director Arthur Hiller's "Making Love" was a bold venture for its time and critcally panned, probably more for its risky content than its acting. Between her TV gigs as one of Charlie's angels and Mrs. King to a Scarecrow, veteran actress Kate Jackson said she would have offered to pay for the role of a TV executive married to a doctor, played by former "Rookies" co-star Michael Ontkean. But with his wife so tied up with her work, husband Zak begins to explore a long-buried curiosity about a same-sex encounter. He finds it in studly writer Harry Hamlin, then a new face on the acting horizon. With his same-sex desires and preference unleashed, Zak has to come clean with wife Kate, and the climactic scene in which Zak confesses his homosexuality is carried with appropriate emotional shock by both Jackson and Ontkean. By today's standards, the film may seem dated and irrelevant, but it was hardly so at the time. A good script is bolstered by good acting and singer Roberta Flack's haunting theme song that was a chart-buster in '82. Beyond the film's obvious topic, it also renders a subtle lesson in the need for honesty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVERBOY ON DVD!!!
This movie is an halirious comedy of the 80s. Its about a guy(Patrick Dempsey, who has a girlfriend and he gets a job as a pizza delivery guy, the only thing is that the deliveries he makes arent just a pizza its a little fun with the opposite sex. The movie is halirious, he ends up even making a delivery to his mom(ALMOST). Colombia/Tristar pictures needs to bring this back on DVD!!! We should beg Colombia/Tristar pictures to bring this back, private resort, and just one of the guys, all on DVD. They need to be put on DVD, for us 80's fans.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stupid
What I don't get is how people liked this movie, despite its paper-thin jokes and some cameos by famous actresses (Kirstie Alley, Carrie Fisher).

The thing is, it's only very mildly amusing (and I do put emphasis on very mildly). You'll get bored and want something fresher and funnier. If you want to see a good Patrick Dempsey movie, try "With Honors." It's a lot better than the idiotic mess that "Loverboy" was made from. The only reason for the second star was that it ended and it had the latter mentioned actresses in it.

Rated PG-13 for language and sexual innueudos.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, terrible price
I love this movie, it's an 80's classic in my opinion. Patrick Dempsey is absolutely adorable as the teen who mistakenly falls into the line of being a male gigalo. Unfortunately, I cannot bring myself to pay this price for a DVD with absolutely no extras. What were they thinking?!?!? For now I'll just rent this movie and wait for the day that the price drops. Too bad....I was looking forward to buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great 80's fun
love this movie. represents what was great about 80's comedies. great soundtrack, silly storyline, and loads of fun.
since when did everything get so serious? this movie doesn't pretend to solve any social problems, it simply makes you laugh.
THAT is what i liked about this flick and what i love about it and other movies of it's genre. don't see it if you take yourself to freakin seriously, but if you want a good time, it's well worth a look!

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY REISSUED AND ON DVD AS WELL!!!!!!!
Im so happy, that Columbia/Tristar pictures finally!, reissued this film, and on DVD in WIDESCREEN! Its about TIME! This movie has never been reissued since it was released originally on home video back in 1989. Im so glad its coming out, and in WIDESCREEN! Itll be the first time ill see this film in its original theatrical aspect ratio! If u dont have this film, Go and get it, u wont be disappointed! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Why no product information?
None of these Dark Shadows video tapes I have searched for here have any information about what the heck is on the tapes. I was informed that there are two types of video: one that is just clips of the series in like a commercial format and not complete episodes. The other is complete episodes, but I don't want the whole series just the vampire episodes. The first part of the show where Viki takes care of that brat David was boring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Willie saves Maggie
Believing that Maggie Evans' memory is returning, Barnabas Collins decides he must kill her to keep his secret safe. But Willie Loomis has other ideas and risks his own life to save Maggie.

In a dream, the ghost of Sarah Collins appears to David Collins, telling him that she is dead, and leading him to a foggy room where Barnabas rises from his coffin and terrorizes the boy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven but good...
I am too much of a Dark Shadows fan to say anything too negative, but this movie isn't as scary as it could have been. It does have incredible atmosphere, and almost suffocating camerawork that adds to the sense of evil. The underuse of Nancy Barrett, John Karlen and especially Lara Parker annoys me the most. This talented trio certainly could have made a good film a great one, but instead we have David Selby and Kate Jackson (never a favorite of mine, although she looks absolutely gorgeous) taking up most of the screen time. Actually, all of the actors look incredible, much better than on the daytime series...even Grayson Hall, whose rubbery TV face looks soft and pretty here. The few glimpses of Angelique we see make this film much less spooky. Certainly that can work in some horror films, but it seems to me that long-time fans familiar with the dazzling Lara/Angelique want to see her more so the impact of this film is predictably blunted. Not bad, but there is lots of wasted potential.

3-0 out of 5 stars AS good a sequel as the filmmakers could have done.
In this creepy, atmospheric sequel to "House of Dark Shadows", Quentin Collins(David Selby), the last of the surviving Collins clan, moves into the Gothic Collinwood estate with his beautiful young bride, Tracy(Kate Jackson) only to discover that the place is a breeding-ground for the supernatural. This leads to several encounters with a captivating 18th-century witch, Angelique(Lara Parker) who makes married life very difficult for the frightened duo to say the least. Admittedly, the film can't hold a candle to its predecessor(any technical problems the film has is due to the fact that it was cut to ribbons before finally being released), but this is probably as good a sequel as the filmmakers could have come up with after the stunning "House of Dark Shadows". Like the original, the film features a number of the series players, including Selby and Jackson in their film debuts, and boasts some truly striking Gothic atmosphere. Rumor has it that the missing footage from "Night of Dark Shadows" is in the process of being restored, and should be released, hopefully, by the end of next year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Welcome Back To Creepy Collinwood!
'Night of Dark Shadows' is the second of the two Dark Shadows motion pictures. At the time of it's release, this one didn't do quite as well as the first, but over the years, it has developed a strong cult following, and looks very good on repeated viewings.

What always impressed me about 'Night of Dark Shadows' was it's subtlety. 'House of Dark Shadows' was fast, loud and very "in your face." 'Night of Dark Shadows' is quiet in comparison -- the music is lush and softer, and the pace is quite relaxed at times. However, what emerges is an underlying sense of dread which intensifies throughout the course of the film (similar to Dan Curtis' 'Burnt Offerings' from 1976). This makes the shocks and scares even more jarring, and by the end of the film, the audience is left feeling bewitched, bothered and bewildered!

It's also important to mention David Selby, who turns in an excellent performance as Quentin Collins. His moodswings and erratic behavior (sensitive one minute and vicious the next), leave us as confused as Kate Jackson's character is.

Hopefully, both 'Night of Dark Shadows' and 'House of Dark Shadows' will be released on DVD soon, with the additional footage that was removed from the films before their respective theatrical releases. As for now, both films are highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars angelique indeeds does come back to collinwood to claim what
in this 1971 sequel to "house of dark shadows'" night of dark shadows" is a creepy film about the ghost of angelique who comes back to claim charles well actually quentin collins who is the reincarnation of charles collins who was a painter like quentin is in the present time. the reason i gave "night " a 5 stars even though there was a lot of the film butchered out by a creep from mgm studio how dare he do that to grayson hall. but grayson was great in it and the 3 cast that was most memorable were kate jackson, david selby.and lara parker,as the bewitching angelique collins. when this film gets a restoration it will make sense and the most awaited scence is the seance according to nancy barrett who plays claire jenkins said it was her best scene maybe it will be the scenes that will be shown at the festival this summer if so i will be there. "night" isnt a bad movie at all . it is just missing some things to read about it get the dark shadows movie book the scripts to both films are in it hopefully "night of dark shadows" will come out on dvd with the missing scenes intact we need to fight cenorship because if we dont jerks like abery from mgm could ruin a great film i personally loved this movie even though the first film "house of dark shadows" was a better film but hopefully the missing scenes will allow the fans to love "night' a little more lara paker is the perfect angelique rather in the flesh or sprit . if you havent read her book about angelique read its a great read a s well.john karlen was great as well as nancy barrett, they made a good husband and wife team. david selby looks very haunting and plays the part of evil well and i cant say enough about the debut motion picture of kate jackson, she was spellbinding in it a great actress,no wonder i can say she was the best angel of charlie's but hey what about a sequel to this movie ? im pretty sure tracy collins figured a way to get away from angelique and quentinor amybe she ran into another room and it changed to another parrell time room like in the series and got away. "night" does have the ability to be pretty creepy. if you are a d s lover rent both films you'll get a kick outta hearing the original music from the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Angelique Collins" is in the house!
This is a follow-up film filmed after HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS (1970) and filmed while the original ABC Network soap opera "Dark Shadows" (1966-1971) was still on television. This film was released during the last year for the original Dark Shadows serial. This film is my personal Dark Shadows favorite. It is the best and is more engrossing. Kate Jackson's performance is unforgetable and Lara Parker is so memorable in her role as "Angelique Collins" as she was on the original tv serial. As a child, I simply could not watch "Angelique". She gave me goosebumps and her eyes were as if hypnotizing. But now I am an adult (age 40). I think Miss Lara Parker is lovely. All the main cast in rhis movie was also in the ABC Network "Dark Shadows" serial. David Selby, Kate Jackson, Grayson Hall, John Karlen, Lara Parker, Nancy Barrett, Jim Storm, Thayer David, Christopher Pennock, Diana Millay and Clarice Blackburn. I will not explain the plot of the film. This one should be a surprise to all gothic movie lovers. Quite sexy though. And you'll like Grayson Hall's 1960's dresses. Location: Lyndhurst Estate, Tarrytown, New York overlooking the Hudson River. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good story but poor production.
I like movies about airplanes and because of that I have several of these movies and one of those is this one.
The cover and the tittle of the movie make you think it's good but there's nothing good in it.
The story is interesting but what makes the movie very bad, is the poor, poor production. The set that it's supposed to be a Boeing 747 with 400 people looks like a very small plane (you'll only see inside the airplane like 25 people during the whole movie). The special effects are terrible, you'll see the airplane fyling but no with a close image and you'll see it like for 2 seconds. The airplane that they use changes from name and colors all the time, then when something good is going to happen they just change the image and put the sound so they wouldn't make a scenery for that scene. Anyway if you like a good movie, just don't get this one, you'll get bored because as I said. The story is interesting but the special effects are so bad that you'll get bored.
Finally I'd like to say that I don't understand how Kate Jackson (Charlie's angels) acepted to be in this low budget movie with all the success that she had in her career.

1-0 out of 5 stars total utter nonsense!!!!!!
this is pure drivel!!!!!clearly there was some kind of argument behind this film;like the director wasnt given enough money to make it,so he thought, you know what,im going to spite the film company by making a hideousely awful film, that'll show them.the "plot",if i can re-tell it without vomiting,is thus:a plane is struck by lightning, and kills all the pilots..............i kind of lost what was going on after that......the ending,if there actually was one,was that whatever predicament they were in,they got out of.where can i begin?????clearly no one involved with this project has any knowledge of basic physics,as they'd have pointed out that this ISNT POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!im a little bit rusty on my physics, but isnt it called a faraday coil???if not then forgive me,my minds a little indestinct, but the main point is a bolt of lightning wont pass through a plane. "what about the glass,it passed through the glass window!!!" you bark smugly, well thick glass used for this wouldnt allow electric current to pass through it.think about it people, you ever been hit by lightning indoors??have you ever heard of this happening in real life before??NO,BECAUSE IT CANT!!!!!! well done, you're learning.anyway, enough of the banter, the film struggles from then on in.for some bizzare reason the plane operated by a laptop, the cable(??!!) for which has broken.it only works by some guy holding it with venom.factor into this some wierd pregnant woman type nonsense, some shouting passengers/helpful people arguing rubbish,a hint of romance between a "criminal" and a "female human being",and you have this godawful tripe of a film.some wonderfully hilarious moments.guy says "i skipped bail","are you a criminal?" she asks!!!!!! well of course he is you stupid fool,he just told you!!!! any time there was "turbulence" the camera was wobbled about a bit,and the "actors" moved around unconvincingly.the terrible news report segments, where hilarity prevailed every time.the bit when the dog jumped out the car, that was brilliant!!!!he pushed it over a bit then it was half dead...then later he gave the oxygen mask, great!!!!! all the scenes involving the radar room, they were something else!!!!the ending also, the rubbish CGI aeroplane, what a laugh!!!!i could go on and on and on,pointing out rubbish but funny things about this film, but i think ive said enough.in short, dont come to watch this if you want a coherent engaging film.but if you enjoy laughing through mind-bogglingly bad trash, then this is definately for you!!!! i laughed nearly all the way through it,so at least it was entertaining.1 out of 5.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Expect Too Much
You may enjoy this movie, if you know nothing about the airplane, or if you are extremely weak for machinery.
This movie has no reality from the beginning to the end.
Plot is poor.
I do not recommend this.

2-0 out of 5 stars What could have been good went downhill from the start!
While films about airplane disasters and hijackings have gotten more and more unpopular, this is probably a good example of why. When I saw the ad for this on TV, I thought "oh cool, lightning strikes a plane... must be some interesting story"... WRONG! The film is not at all believable. The outside shots of the plane differ throughout the movie.. I think I counted 3 different styles. A laptop controlling a 747? A wire hanging through the cabin after the lightning forces the plane to react violently?

I'm a fan of the Airport films, and I liked recent ones like Executive Decision, the first Turbulence movie, and a few others in this genre. But this film was a big disappointment. Kate Jackson's performance was credible, but the remaining cast was pretty terrible. There's too many plotholes and credibility faults to recommend this film. If you want a good air-scare film, check out one of the Airport films or one of the ones I mentioned.

I give this film 2 stars because, while it did have too many faults and isn't really worth watching when there are other films to choose from, the film had it's few moments of holding my attention.

Check out another air disaster movie if you want to have an enjoyable experience!

5-0 out of 5 stars double trouble
Royce Air International, flight 115 to London Heathrow is in trouble.A lighting strikes the cockpit during take off causing an electral fire which kills the pilot[Fred Henderson]and the rest of the flight crew.Laurie Ann[Kate Jackson]is forced to help the pasengers as she and Brett Young[Ed Marinano]race to engage the auto pilot. But when the aircraft starts to head west, the plane begins to lose fuel fast. On the ground the athorities must choose to shoot the plane down over a deserted area or try to find a solution before the plane crashes in a populated city causing 1,000 more deaths.
