Director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, Rosewood) made an earnest effort in this, his second, film to say a great deal that is true and relevant about living and loving in a violent, difficult time in American history. Janet Jackson plays a beautician and poet who withdraws into herself after her boyfriend is murdered by gangsters. The late Tupac Shakur plays a postman who tries to get through to her, and the two travel on a course through urban America, connecting with family and community. Singleton has so much on his mind that the film comes out a terrible muddle, but there is a certain integrity peeking through the fog. Shakur makes a startlingly good impression in his film debut, and Jackson strips away her star veneer to play something like a real person--and entirely succeeds. Maya Angelou wrote the poems that pass as those penned by Jackson's character, and she also appears in the film. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great film!
Poetic Justice is about a girl named Justice (Janet) who writes poetry and is trying to get through hard times that have happened in the past and start over. Justice and her friend Keisha take a trip to Oakland with Keisha's boyfriend Chicago and friend Lucky (Tupac). Justice and Lucky fall in love through the movie. This is a really good flick to watch again and again. It also has a great ending and the bomb soundtrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great film; lots of humour, romance, etc.
I loved watching this film. I saw it the first time on TV and afterwards I went out and rented it and saw it a lot more times. It was just wonderful! Full of different emotions. There was romance and love, sadness, fights, and a lot of great humour!! The main actors (janet jackson, Tupac Shakur) were also terrific and they proved that they could be actors as well as a singer/rapper/song-writer. It was the first time I saw Tupac in a movie, acting. After this film I just had to rent more movies that he was in!

3-0 out of 5 stars Poetic Justice
I was fifteen years old when I first saw this movie when it first came out at the theaters back in the summer of 1993. I liked how the story showed a young black woman healing from the hurt and pain of losing her boyfriend, and how she wrote poetry to help her get through her pain. I thought that the poetry was really good. But the real reason why I give this movie three stars is because there was too much profanity and all the arguing and bickering that went on in the movie. I felt like all of that wasn't necessary for the movie. "Boyz N The Hood" will always be the #1 movie from John Singleton.

3-0 out of 5 stars janet's acting career
Many kids today forget that before janet became a musician, she was an actress who starred in sitcoms and the jacksons tv show doing skits. If they had known, they would have seen that she had acting skills back then, but this movie is not really representative of it though it's not a bad film. I guess the role was a new kind of role for janet and she has said before that cussing didn't come her naturally back then, and it shows. But if you want a romantic comedy with a street style to watch, you just may want to check this out.

1-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! THIS IS SO STUPID!!!!!
Boyz N the Hood- now that was a good movie. I guess John Singleton thought he was invincible when he came out with this goofy movie. Janet Jackson is very hot and has a nice set but not even that can save this one. You've got this girl- her name is "Justice"?!? - and she JUST HAPPENS TO WRITE POETRY?!? - so of course... we get the movie "POETIC JUSTICE". Brilliantly stupid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great video
the music and dancing is awesome, and has a good message to it. Janet was at her artistic peak with this album/movie. It also won a grammy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Songs&Videos go hand&hand
the cool thing about this Compilation is that the songs&videos to me go really well together. She Struck a Chord with this Production&everything hits here to me.a strong Message&Strong Concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great
The Rhythm Nation video is a 30 minute movie about the meaning of the album, and a remaining 30 minutes about the making of this mini movie. It offers insight about the album, and includes many of the albums songs (Black Cat, Rhythm Nation, Miss You Much, The Knowledge). A must have for fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only Music Video I watch over and over
janet. That's saying a mouthful right there. Her videos from Control and Rhythm Nation are her best work. This particular video is very interesting because of the story line interwoven therein. It does not seem overstated, preachy, or judgemental...but still has a serious message. A high point of this video is the chair routine at the end of "Miss You Much" that MTV, BET, and VH1 never show. You will love this video...and you will love the behind-the-scenes portion as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet is The best PLAIN AND SIMPLE!
Janet is such a beautiful person. She is the best singer, dancer, actress. I thought she did an excellent job in all of her videos, concerts, movies, TV shows, etc. Anything Janet does is the best. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sequal bites the BIG one!
This movie proves, once again, that the sequal never lives up to the original. The Klumps, trying to ride on the tails of its predecessor, attempts to give the one-dimensional Klump family a second dimension to their characters. FAILED! While the movie is very funny (why it got a second star in my opinion), it tried to take on a more serious family aspect which left the film dragging slowly to the next punch-line delivered by Eddie Murphy in any of his hilarious disguises. If you want a funny movie, I suggest going with the first Nutty Professor where the one-sided Klumps are more suited for their roles, though less present in the overall story line. If you're an avid fan of Grandma Klump and her "Cletus-cutdowns," then this is your movie... though I could have done without seeing her making moves on Buddy Love. Enjoy your movie experience! :)

3-0 out of 5 stars it was alright
Eddie Murphy is the king of comedy, and janet is the queen of pop, excellent combination right? It somewhat works here, but the only problem is that though janet shows promise in acting, she doesn't really have a role in this film that seperates the musician from the actress, Denise Gaines doesn't have much of a personality other than clinging to Sherman and flaunting her beautiful smile. I really think she was great on Good Times and Different Strokes back in the day and the Lena Horne movie she was supposed to do looked promising, but it got scrapped. I love the theme Doesn't Really Matter that was written and sung by janet and it was nice hearing it in the movie and soundtrack, it was a big summer hit, hitting #1 for 3 weeks. Eddie Murphy on the other hand is hilarious throughout the whole movie and he beautifully plays different roles of the Klump family, each one showing a different and humorous personality. The grandma one was my favourite. I didn't think all of the jokes in the film were funny, but there were some scenes in the movie that were childish yet extremely hilarious that had me laughing the loudest in the theater.

I think the first one is better, but if you're interested in getting to know the other Klump family members more, you may want to check this out. And also if you like janet jackson, you'll want to see this, but don't expect another role like the one she had in Poetic Justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY!
First of all, this movie is VERY funny! Its even funnier than the first film!

Whats even better, is how much the family gets involved in this movie (Eddie Murphy plays all 7 charcters!)

You can't even tell that the family is all the same actor, they all seem different.

get this movie! its funny as hell!

1-0 out of 5 stars terribly disappointing
I, and my family, had high hopes for this film. We had really enjoyed the first Nutty Professor movie. This sequel, however, is a truly awful movie. The plot is a totally confusing mess.
The humor is missing and in its place is a huge amount of farting and cursing and potty-mouthed, potty-minded crap. The language is terrible and I really didn't want my kids to see the shots of swinging breasts and bulging erections. As a family film it is completely inappropriate. As a movie in general, it is utterly unfunny and pretty much a total bomb.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst movie EVER
I couldn't believe my eyes and ears, at the beginning, at the altar, when Eddie Murphy's head comes out of his zipper, I couldn't believe how awful it was. AND it sets the tone for the whole movie. Bad taste galore, the worst kind, and it's not the least bit funny. The family monologues aren't the worst (never heard anything unfunnier), and then of course the fart-jokes,
Really, movie-making has never sunk any lower.
I'd say this is the most vulgar thing ever seen on tv, and that's counting the Osbournes! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
Janet is the best. Her videos showcase her ability to bring her songs into life, with the best dancing anyone has ever done. My favorite on this video is If, both versions (althoug all dance version is better). This was one of her most creative in my opinion and the dance is awesome. I love all the others, they show us different sides of Janet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Janet , period
The concept project , "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814" showed a woman with a message. This project shows a woman with a body. In these videos , Janet expresses herself , not by showing off her thoughts , but by showing off her breasts! You can see that by the cover. This hour-long program includes :

Part 1
That's The Way Love Goes : Directed by Rene Elezondo Jr. This lay-back video also includes an apperance by Janet's then dancer Jennifer Lopez!!! (yes , you heard me right)

If : Directed by Domenic Sena. (also directed "Rhythm Nation" & "Miss You Much") This is the uncut , completely uncensored version of the video! It wasn't shown on BET , MTV , or VH1 because it featured extras in the video acting out explicit innuendo.

Again : Directed by Rene Elezondo Jr. This Oscar-nomminated song was featured in Janet's film with Tupac , "Poetic Justice"

Anytime , Anyplace : A hot (and I mean hot) video. More like a soft porn.
Not for children , adults only.

You Want This : Goes very well with the song. A very summer time , spring break type video.

Part 2 - Alternate Versions
That's The Way Love Goes : One take version

If : All dance version

Anytime , Anyplace : R. Kelly Mix. This video is a lot steamier than the original.

You Want This : Colorized version

Includes exclusive behind the scenes footage and dance rehersal sessions from "If". This rare & hard-to-find item should be bought now. (only if you're a true Janet fan)

4-0 out of 5 stars 'Should come wrapped in brown paper!
THIS AIN'T THE SAME JANET THAT PRANCED AROUND THE "RHYTYM NATION"!

Five full-length music videos, and their behind-the-scenes "making", are presented in this slightly-longer-than-an-hour compilation. It is fascinating to watch all the pre-production and the development of the respective dance routines. One gets to glimpse future stars Jennifer Lopez (billed as a "featured dancer") and Gary Dourdan of "CSI", playing Jackson's love interest in "Again".

The soft-porn "Any Time, Any Place" makes this one a little too hot for younger audiences. Of course, this version was the one shown on the respective music video television channels, but it hasn't lost its "steam" after ten years.

I had an objection with it then, and I maintain that same one now: MARK IT "ADULTS ONLY!"

5-0 out of 5 stars the music videos i grew up watching
this video takes me back about 10 years and here's a breif description of the entire project :
part 1 : the videos

- that's the way love goes = directed by janet's then husband rene elezondo jr. and included a cameo of a then unknown j.lo !!
- if = directed by dominic sena who also directed the short film "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814"
- again = also directed by rene elezondo jr. and was used in janet's feature film debut "poetic justice"
- anytime anyplace = another video directed by rene elezondo jr. featuring a VERY FINE extra who's ALL OVER janet in the video !!!
- you want this = features the kids from the "janet. tour" filmed in black and white

part 2 : alternate versions

- that's the way love goes (one take version)
- if (all dance version) this was the version they aired on TV because the original contained scenes that featured explicit content and inuenndo
- anytime anyplace (r. kelly remix) featured on the "Janet.Remixed" album
- you want this (colorized version)

the only video they forgot is "because of love" featuring clips of the "janet. tour".

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
This video 'Janet', is Janet Jackson's VHS to her 1993 10x platinum album titled,'Janet' as well. I loved it. It includes the making of the videos(If,Anytime,Anyplace,That's The Way Love Goes, etc.) the behind the scenes stuff, then the second part includes the videos. A must have! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT! Janet is terriffic in all of these videos.
This tape features the music videos for "What Have You Done for Me Lately", "Nasty","When I Think of You","Control","Let's Wait Awhile","The Pleasure Principle","Miss You Much","Rhythm Nation","Escapade","Alright","Come Back to Me", "Black Cat","Love Will Never Do(without you)", "That's The Way Love Goes","Whoops Now", and "Runaway". This video also has a Runaway documentary. I watch this video over and over and I never get tired of it. It's amazing. Janet is the BEST dancer ever. I encourage all of you to buy this video. It is a wonderful collection of Janet's greatest hits!

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet's music videos
Janet has terrific videos, I love all of them, the choreography is superb and she is a really good dancer. This is the VHS version of her greatest hits CD "Design of a Decade" and has all the songs of the album except for "The Best Things In Life Are Free" (but since Janet can't be seen in that video, it's not really missed) and "Twenty Foreplay" (which would be a great addition).

Those who miss the videos of the "janet." album should buy the VHS release "janet." which has the videos of You Want This, If, Again, Any Time Any Place and a different version of That's The Way Love Goes.

4-0 out of 5 stars design of a great career
this is a collection of music videos from janet jackson in her prime and at her creative peak. I only wish more videos from the janet album were featured and that miss you much was extended, but I know that this is representative of mostly her A&M work and barely her Virgin work. My favourite videos are nasty, control, pleasure principle and all the videos from rhythm nation as well as the multicultural runaway. Get it today and see what janet did before britney and those kids came along

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but with a few shortcomings
I agree with the other reviewers about how essential a collection of Janet videos is. The choreography is amazing and her attention to detail rivals that of her brother. I'm giving this only four stars because it could have taken better advantage of the DVD capacity (read: more videos, please!:)

The Control videos are pretty much here in their entirety, but Rhythm Nation is where we begin the edits. I loved the extended chair sequence at the end of "Miss You Much", but it is missing here. They certainly had room for the additional 30 seconds. Come to think of it, they could have included the entire Rhythm Nation movie. Perhaps in a future release. The "Alright" video is also truncated, but even in its edited form is still long enough and enjoyable (very cool to see Cab, Cyd, and the Nicholas Brothers).

Absent from the "janet" release are "If" and "Again". Another reviewer mentioned a few other vids from this CD, but these are the only ones that stood out for me. "If" had this cool Asian underground theme and some interesting choreography, while "Again" was basically just clips from "Poetic Justice". I would rather have seen either of these videos in favor of "Whoops Now".

I'm guessing the omission of some of her later videos was to maintain consistency with the format of the Design CD (but then what is "Whoops Now" doing here?). I'm hoping a more complete retrospective is released soon, but I found this for $9 and couldn't resist. It's hard to sit still while watching these videos, they make you want to dance. :)

Early in their career: Check out JLo (from her "In Living Color" dancer days) in "That's the Way Love Goes". And of course Paula in the "Nasty" video. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential collection!
This is a review of the VHS video "Michael Jackson: Video Greatest Hits HIStory" Vol. 1. Whether or not you are a fan of Michael Jackson, this is an essential video because it shows how good music videos can be. BILLIE JEAN is a striking video that broke down color barriers on MTV; THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL has a loose improvisational feeling to it which makes it fun to watch; BLACK OR WHITE is modern masterpiece complete with morphing and the controversial "panther dance" sequence. In the original version of this video, Michael smashes in a car windshield that has racist grafitti on it... he is fighting back against the racism. However, in the version included on this tape, the grafitti is edited out, so we just see Michael smashing a window for no apparent reason. Even so, the video is still an amazing experience! ROCK WITH YOU takes us back to 1980 before Michael's plastic surgery; BAD and BEAT IT include some of the best choreography even seen in music videos, although the version of BAD on this tape is the short version, not the full version with Wesley Snipes. This tape also includes the videos for Thriller, Remember The Time, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Heal The World in their entirety. This video is a powerful mix of music, dance, and film. Even if you don't think Michael is the King of Pop, this collection proves he is the King of VIDEO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson - Video Greatest Hits - HIStory on Film
This spectacular compilation of Michael Jackson's music videos is a must-see for all MJ fans, and anyone else who enjoys good music and dancing. This tape includes the videos:

-Billie Jean -The Way You Make Me Feel -Black or White* -Rock with You -Bad (shortened version without Wesley Snipes) -Thriller (entire video with credits) -Beat It -Remember the Time -Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough -Heal The World

This is a great video that shows not only the evolution of Michael Jackson's music, but also that of his appearance. Co-stars include Eddie Murphy, Iman, Magic Johnson, McAuley Culkin, Bart and Homer Simpson, and others. An exceptional video!!! *In the video Black or White, Michael appears to be furiously smashing the windows of a car for no reason. In the original, racist graffiti is painted on the windows. This was edited out in this version. Relax, Michael is not crazy. Or at least not that crazy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Video HIStory
Don't just listen to the album, watch the videos! However there are fewer songs in this package than the audio counterpart. We see videos for hits from OFF THE WALL,THRILLER,BAD,DANGEROUS and of course, the audio counterpart of HISTORY. No fan of the King Of Pop should be without this unless he/she chooses not to.

3-0 out of 5 stars Big fan here but this is a disappointment....
Honestly, I love Michael Jackson's music and have purchased History 2 on VHS (the gold box) and Dangerous: The Short Films before I got this. I was excited because I thought I would see some things different on this DVD, but it's all the same! You're better off purchasing Dangerous: The Short Films or History 2 because most of the same material on this video is on the others, and the others have some new added footage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet at her best
Leaving behind the depressing and drab mood of Janet's previous tour, "The Velvet Rope Tour", this concert is a long-awaited return to the happy and fun Janet that we are used to after over two decades in the business. Some may say that the choreography and visuals are the same as the last tour. Indeed, certain elements of the show (such as the Whimsical Medley) are reminiscent of Ms. Jackson's previous tour, but these segments still seem to be a crowd pleaser. Much of the choreography from older hits is left the same. However, I think this is due not to being uninspired, but rather to familiarize the song and routine from Janet's amazing and remarkable videos with the fans. The choreography is still some of the most intricate and amazing out there, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The DVD also features incredible extras including a photo gallery, the Would You Mind compilation, an interview with Janet herself, and much more! And despite what some reviewers have to say, Miss Janet is singing more live than not. While 4 or 5 songs may have backing vocals for Janet to rely on, out of a 26 song set, that is a pretty low percentage. This is Janet at her best. Fun, energetic, sexy, gorgeous, and happy. If you want a good show, then this DVD is all for you.

19. Rhythm Nation [7:40]
20. Doesn't Really Matter [10:40]
21. Someone to Call My Lover [3:23]
22. Together Again [7:33]

This is a wonderful live DVD. Janet has a lot of good clothes. There's a little bit theater and everything. She sings very beautifully too! My favs are "Trust a Try", "Would You Mind" (Janet takes a man from the audience and does a little bit nasty things to him, a little bit erotic). I have to say this is much better than that first live DVD! Much better!

2-0 out of 5 stars Janet, your losing it but i want to be together again
Janet, come on. Growing up with your genius brother Michael, you should have learned how to put on a concert. Remember you going backstage in his 1988 Bad Tour in Japan. You and your mom were right there. Remember how he moved an audience. I haven't seen that in your concerts. The audience is just standing there. In Michael's they are fainting, crying, jumping, moving, hands up, waving arms, and going crazy. He puts on an electrifying performance and he makes it look so natural. You on the other hand at this stage make is look so forced and so rehearsed.

I know you are no where near the talents of Michael Jackson, but you sure put on a good concert for the Velvet Rope and also put on a good concert I attended during your Rythym Nation tour. Come on Janet, lets be together again.

I have your concert taped, but I have all of Michael Jackson's concerts as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Velvet Rope is better
I attended both tours and own both of the HBO shows and I can honestly say Velvet Rope is a much better tour. All For You is only better because of the bright colours onstage and Janet dressed up more girly, but Velvet Rope was all about the music and art, not the stripping and changing backstage.

2-0 out of 5 stars Totally Agree With The Reviewer From Santa Clara, California
It was quite boring! Other than watching Janet change costumes, there really wasn't anything that kept my attention on this one. Get the Velet Rope concert from Madison Square Garden instead. It was much more exciting and electric! ...

I'd say this is the most vulgar thing ever seen on tv, and that's counting the Osbournes! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet Rocks! (of course)
I got this video almost 9 years ago (it's been awhile). I mainly wanted it because I had seen some of the videos for the "Rhythm Nation" album on TV before, but not all of them. When I was finally able to watch it (we had to get a new VCR), I was not disappointed. After all these years, this is still my favorite videotape to watch. Every video on it is unique in its own way. From the serious mood of "Rhythm Nation" to the slow jam "Come Back To Me" and the playful "Escapade," you see Janet at her best. My favorite song is "Escapade," and the video compliments it well. "Alright" is simply a tight video. One of my favorites. And who can forget "Love Will Never Do (Without You)"? We got a glimpse of the sexy Janet that we now know today. If you are a Janet fan, and "Rhythm Nation" is your favorite album, then GET THIS TAPE! You will not be disappointed! I still have to get the Design of a Decade and Janet videos, but the Rhythm Nation Compilation definitely satisfies my Janet cravings!

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" Is Electrifying & Upbeat!
In over 10 years, Janet Jackson has been a phenomenal musical success, that has made her one of America's biggest superstars beginning with the success of her first album "Control." In her second album "Rhythm Nation" which was her first tour is still the most spectacular performance she has given. Jackson, 37, has won every music award on earth, holds 21 gold singles, and sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. Rhythm Nation contains many of Jackson's greatest hits: Black Cat, Alright, Miss You Much, Love Will Never Do, Escapade, and much more spectacular music video performances for fans to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pop Extravaganza
Janst's Rhythm Nation 1814 is now hailed as one of the most important & brilliant dance albums of our time. This DVD explains why. Featuring her 7 Top 5 US singles off the album, you appreciate not only the brilliance of the songs, but also the visual efforts which Janet makes to ensure her fans are kept on the edge of their seats. From the chair routine of Miss You Much to the military precision of the dancing in Rhythm Nation, to the carnivalesque ambience of Escapade, Janet delivers, delivers, delivers. Personal faves are the fantastic Black Cat which shows just fans relished her Rhythm nation tour & effectively captures crowd reception. Love Will Never Do - perhaps Janet's best song ever, is merely a happy video of Janet dancing on the desert & some artsy type images created thanks to guru photographer, Herb Ritz. It really is something else. Add to that the 1920s feel of Alright, & featuring a host of Cabaret legends & the romantic Come Back To Me, which is set in Paris,, & you have one heck of a varied musical & visual collection which thrills & entertains. For those not in the know, Rhythm Nation 1814 was a concept album & Janet does talk about the theme of the album & also includes a short clip of fans who have responded successfully to the album's message about self-improvement & getting an education to succeed in the world - who would have thought a dance album could do that? Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you Miss Jackson..........

4-0 out of 5 stars good but...
It was good but why did it have to be in black and white!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the best with what you have!
Coming behind the coattails of legendary brothers, the youngest Jackson had to carve out her distinctive niche.

And, man, did "Miss Jackson" do just that. Saddled with two of the hottest producers in the business, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jackson released the landmark album "Rhythm Nation 1814" in 1989 and the critics and the public went wild. The platinum-selling album spawned no less than seven hit singles, all with accompanying videos that only added to their success.

This video compilation is the perfect "trip down memory lane" as Jackson and her superb troupe of dancers prance, shimmy, grind, and cavort to the title cut, "Miss You Much", "Love Will Never Do (Without You)", "Alright" (with guest performances from Cyd Charisse, the Nicholas Brothers, Cab Calloway, and Heavy D), "Escapade" with its carnival influences", "Black Cat", "Lonely", and "Come Back to Me" with its Parisian background.

Top-notch direction from Dominec Sena, Peter Smillie, Julian Temple, Wayne Isham and the late Herb Ritts allowed the singer to shine as only she could in each mini-spectacle. ... Read more

This lavish two-hour concert special, originally produced for HBO, offers ample proof of Janet Jackson's fierce ambitions. Whitney, Celine, and Mariah can run circles around her small, sweet voice, but Janet brings a tough, muscular power to her live performances that none of those peers can approach, storming through myriad set and costume changes, and sustaining an aerobic pace through elaborate dance routines. As captured during this Madison Square Garden presentation of her Velvet Rope tour, Janet Jackson is, ahem, very buff indeed, not just in her well-toned physical health, but in her vocal attack.

The Velvet Rope tosses up rappers, hard-rock heroism, melting romantic pop, and Jackson's own flavor of soft-core erotica, but the show transcends those components in its broad sense of spectacle. The star fronts a formidable battalion of dancers, singers, and musicians to make her points, and while it's obvious that the musical performances have been nipped, tucked, and polished to an acceptable sheen, Janet earns her props through sheer willpower.

Ranging across Jackson's best-known songs from the last decade, the production is noteworthy for its intricate choreography and massive settings, in which the star seeks to match the big-budget sweep of her music videos. The live troupe is formidable, composed of a crack band and a large cast of nimble dancers, and Janet keeps pace with her aerobic presence. We'll leave it to social scientists to ponder the significance of the "Rope Burn" sequence, in which an ecstatic male fan is lashed to a chair and gets to watch his favorite sex object pole-dance. If this stalwart is any indication, Janet has already won the hearts (and more) of her faithful. --Sam Sutherland ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars JANET IS DEFINATELY NOBODY'S LITTLE SISTER !!
Ms. Jackson - is definately nobody's little sister she is a woman, and a very beautiful one at that - I think that it is an insult to say she is the little sister of Michael - I believe she has proven that time and time again - she is her own person. I have viewed this video each time it has aired on HBO and I must say - I have been totally mezmarized {so have my children}; her stage presence is totally awesome, she gives her all and then some - her background singers and her dancers are equally incredible - the performance they all gave was heart-pounding. I have been a Janet fan since the real early days "come give your love to me" and even earlier than that {she and I are the same age}; - no matter what you think of her or her performance you have to give the girl her props - let's face it out of all the children her parents had she's the only girl that is doing something with the gift GOD gave her, not downing her sisters but I've heard them both sing and well - I'm gonna leave that alone, anyway my personal opinion is that Ms. Jackson is the BOMB, and even though I'm a woman I would have loved to be where that guy was sitting when she gave that lap dance to "Rope Burn" of course that is my favorite part of the concert. Thank you Comments: lds@lewin.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet Jackson knows how to put on a show!
I decided to buy this tape after seeing the show here in Hawaii. Janet Jackson is an extraordinary performer and watching her, her dancers, her crew, and her band work so hard to put on a show is so amazing. She and her dancers really rock and the concert is incredible. There is never a boring moment. This tape is exciting to watch, especially if you loved the concert and are a big fan of Janet's work. I really recommend it. Janet Jackson is an admirable performer, whether or not you are a fan of her Velvet Rope work (which I happen to love). She works very hard and appreciates her audiences. This tape is cool; buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Performance From Janet
In 1998, I got the rare opportunity to see Janet Jackson in concert held in Minneapolis, during "The Velvet Rope" tour. The show was amazing. All of the physical features and her performances were breathtaking. Though nothing beats the live experience, this DVD wonderfully commemorates the tour.

Months before, she released an album of the same name that was unusually different than her previous. She was always known for her positive songs. However, the album entirely explored her painful turbulations, including abuse, loss, depression, and others. These songs are based on thoughts she endured during her two-year depression, 1995-1997. Many listeners were shocked. Some of these songs gave this tour a new outlook. Despite revisiting many classic songs, audiences can feel her new style.

The elaborate stage direction gives the concert a more enjoyable experience. The three different backgrounds and the three different costumes add to the spectacular pleasure: inside the velvet rope theme, the circus-like theme, and the hip-hop theme. All blend perfectly with the dance moves and the songs. However, her vocal expressions remain present the whole performance while never being overlooked. Her facial expressions prove that she truly feels the songs. Through the sexuality, political motivation, the pain, and the anger, she maintains her full musical quality. All songs offer a new prospective through her life. She keeps audiences excited, always having fun.

"The Velvet Rope Tour" proves how truly great Janet Jackson is an entertainer. This DVD edition is great for all fans as this will surely please audiences for a long time. The tremendous quality proves that she'll continue entertaining for many more years. Go Janet!

5-0 out of 5 stars it's all about the music
This concert is all about the music and art with a little bit of sex, but after this she became way too sexual in a classless way. Although janet's career is suffering right now, she will bounce back. Hey, even Velvet Rope started out slow and started picking up once Together Again was released, Damita Jo should too once the new single All Nite becomes a hit. So buy this DVD today, it's all about the music

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet At Her Best
Before her recent decline from the last couple of years, Janet was sexy but made her performance top priority before showing flesh! True, she was suggestive here as well but nothing like the blantant shows that she makes now.

She performs mainly from Velvet Rope but she also performs a lot of the songs that made her an ICON such as Rhythm Nation, Alright, Love Will Never Do Without You & Black Cat.

This is an electric concert and between this and the Hawaii concert, I would recommend this one the better of the two. Get this to see Janet before her decline. ... Read more
