5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Classic
This is a real classic movie. Don Ameche and Tom Selleck did a supurb job. As any movie it has its slow spots but keeps you laughing. Ive watched this flick a dozen times already and still laugh just as hard and times even harder. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who's looking for a warm comedy with lots of laughs. Now if it would only come out on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Folks Is One Of The Funniest Movies Out There!
I would recommend this title to everybody! It is one of the funniest movies that I have ever seen and I couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw it! This Video is a MUST GET for all movie lovers!!!

Book Description

An outspoken thinker, a celebrated actress, a truly independent woman, Shirley MacLaine takes us on an intimate yet powerful journey into her personal life and inner self.

An intense, clandestine love affair with a prominent politician sparks Shirley MacLaine's quest of self-discovery. From Stockholm to Hawaii to the mountainous vastness of Peru, from disbelief to radiant affirmation, she at last discovers the roots of her very existence...and the infinite possibilities of life.

Shirley MacLaine opens her heart to explore the meaning of a great and enduring passion with her lover Gerry and the mystery of her soul's connection with her best friend David. And through it all, Shirley MacLaine's courage and candor opens new doors, new insights, new revelations -- and a luminous new world she invites us all to share. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprising on many levels
This might sound condescending, but this compelling account of the actress' spiritual journey is surprisingly well written. Shirley MacLaine is not just a Hollywood dancer turned New Age guru; she's a bestselling author who knows the craft of writing. What comes across immediately is the earnestness of her message. She's not out to fool her readers. She's also done her research. Each chapter has apt quotations from great thinkers about the nature of life as they saw it. There are a lot of sentences that begin with the word "Maybe," as in "Maybe the ancient thinkers had it right." Nevertheless she rightly states that what we call history is a leap of faith. Readers will have to make their own judgments about the credulity of the author, but MacLaine's testament shows us that everyone has to draw their own lines about personal beliefs based on experience, reading, and reasoning. But above all, experience. And she documents this process spendidly. She does not come off as an unreasonable "kook." On the contrary, she herself is skeptical at first and admits that the very ideas she later accepts seem "preposterous." It is this intelligence and skepticism which makes this book hard to dismiss as simply New Age pap. The chapter about Peter Sellers is genuinely moving.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE, LIGHT, & QUESTIONS.......ANSWERED !
With all my heart and soul, Shirley MacLaine, I love what you have done to help those of us who are searching for our spirituality! If you have questions, look out. You will have more and many answers will come your way while watching "Out On A Limb". Everyone that I have recommended this movie to loves it.
I lost my 3-tape set to a house fire. Would like to find same. I have to say, the one tape version just isn't enough. Shirley MacLaine was there during my early search for spirit through her books. Her movie was a big help. It has opened many eyes to the truth...even my husband's. I loaned my set to a friend who thought six hours was too much. The following day he told me that he couldn't stop watching. He didn't get much sleep that night. Was so excited about the movie and had more questions.
We love "Out On A Limb". Don't be afraid to climb out there on that limb...so enlightening! Shirley MacLaine at her best and most of all...being herself! Thankyou Shirley for all you have done to help this soul find her way home. Chi Megwetch!

4-0 out of 5 stars More Answers Than You Would Expect!
I read Out on a Limb when I was fourteen-years-old, and the book acknowledged every doubt and every idea that I had thought of growing up with Christian ideals: fate, the afterlife, the soul, etc. Shirley MacLaine introduces her personal faith from the beginning and systematically details her progression into the spiritual teacher that she is to this day. MacLaine also seems to possess a sixth sense as to the questions that her readers will encounter as they read her novel and answers them in a very clear and concise manner (if you're not careful, the material can be quite daunting).

My only outstanding complaint about this novel is that MacLaine had to account for every facet of her and Jerry's relationship. It proved to be quite distracting and I did not feel that Jerry's extra-marital affair with Shirley was necessary for a book of this nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book changed my life!!!
First of all before I started reading out on a limb I regarded
Shirley Maclaine as an actress. That opinion was rapidly changed once I started reading out on a limb. I could not put the book down.

The book prompted me to ask questions of who I am and who I was in past lives. This book opened my eyes to the fact that we are all in charge of our own realities, that we choose whatever happens in our daily lives.

Upon completion of this book I went out and bought every single book by shirley maclaine which I read with rapid speed. When I finished out on a limb I felt more positive about myself and the world around me. I realized that happiness and change begin with me. Thank you shirley for the life changeing information that you chose to share. It has certainly changed my life for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, fun and enlightening.
I watched the four hour version and felt it was time well spent.Good acting and a very good story. One of my better movie investments and a keeper for my collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heeeere's Johnny! A modern horror classic on DVD
It's tough to believe that Stanley Kubrick received a Worst Director Razzie nomination for "The Shining." While "The Shining" may not be given the classic status of some of his other films like "Dr. Strangelove" and "2001", it's actually the least polarizing of this highly-praised and atypical filmmaker's work.

This atmospheric thriller is sure to creep you out with its pacing, eery editing and cinematography (those tracking shots are highly effective), and Jack Nicholson's powerful performance as Jack Torrance. Horror films often tend to divide audiences into genre fans who follow the gore and those who laugh in the face of so-called scares, insisting their own resiliancy to cheap thrills and lamebrain plotting.

Fortunately, "The Shining" doesn't make you take sides, because its chills come from plotting and character study as much as they do from odd sights that will make you jump. It may stray from Stephen King's book and not all of it may make sense, but "The Shining" has so much going for it that you won't mind. It's a gripping and satisfying film experience, and in my opinion, one of the best films of the '80s.

This Warner DVD re-release is definitely the version to get. The fullframe presentation comes at the wishes of Kubrick and the video and audio offer significant improvement over the drab initial release. (Unfortunately, the original Mono audio track has been dropped altogether in favor of an effective 5.1 remix. They could have included both with no problem.)

In the way of extras, there is an engaging half-hour on-set documentary, filmed by Kubrick's daughter Vivian. It provides a candid experience of the film's creation, and interviews with some of the actors. In addition, this DVD re-release includes an audio commentary on the documentary (sort of a "making-of the making-of") by Vivian Kubrick. There's also the spooky trailer, which shows how a movie preview can perfectly pique one's interest in a film, without spoiling (or even saying) much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the Best Horror Movie Ever
This was a spectacular piece of work. It had a chilling soundtrack, and had some very good camera work. In the case of the Shining, a movie has finally exceeded the book upon which it was based. Things that would normally make a movie terrible have made the Shining a spellbinding movie. For example, the dialogue throughout the entire movie seems forced and unnatural. Another example is during an argument between Jack Nicholson (who performs incredibly well throughout the entire movie) and Shelley Duvall, after which Jack storms out of the room and glances at the camera as he goes by. If you're a horror fan, or just into movies, this is definetely one to see again and again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great horror movie..
This film slowley but shorley creepes you out, I don't think any one but Jack Nicholson could have played this role that well, and Krubrick has the best feal in the world, and the score is one of the best ever put in a movie. The movie is really scary.
It all starts off kinda slow thenwe see Dany talking to himself, and then there's a few images that are veary frightning, the holtel gives you a veary creepy isalated fealing, like if something were to happen there'de be no way out. Jack slowly starts going crazyer and crazer, and the hole time creepy images are appearing in the hotel, and the last half hour of the movie is trueley scary, a must see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie, Non-biased
A quality drama of a unique portion of 20th century history. Fairly accurate in historical detail in describing the struggles of the reborn state of Israel. Despite all contrary odds and the concerted effort of four arab nations to annihilate the state of Israel, this young struggling nation under Golda's leadership not only survives but "blooms" in the desert.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie but bias
I salute the actors and the director but the movie did not show the suffering of the other side. The Movie was too bias to the isreali side without mentioning much about the palestinian side. I am not a palestinian but I think that the sufferings that they went through because of Golda should have been mentioned.... I still enjoyed the movie and I once again Salute Ingrid for her outstanding performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tribute to Golde Meir and to Ingrid Bergman!!!!!
What a wonderful video!!!!! It portrays the real life of Golde Meir through her own words as the elderly woman who returns to her grammar school in Wisconsin. Ingrid Bergman's last role is deffinitely one of her very best! She is very believeable as the Prime Minister of Israel. It is historically accurate and educational! I recommend it highly for students! It shows the young Nation's struggle through the eyes of this courageous woman! A tribute to Golde, Ingrid and Israel!!!!! Shalom!!!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Under-rated comedy full of inuendo
This movie was made as a comedic sexual comedy at a time when such things were really pretty tame by todays standards. The script is mediocre but the cast is great. The is a wild western that is safe for most audiences, but not quite family friendly due to the sexual inuendo. It Sells for a pretty price even used due to rarity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look....
Although there is not a lot going for Sinatra in this western spoof, Jack Elam makes it worth a look. Elam was one of the all-time great character actors that can make even the worst spoof funny....case in point, Dirty Dingus Magee.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Awful
Sinatra and Kennedy should have had their hairpieces examined in accepting one of the unfunniest western comedies of all-time. No chemistry exists between the two, all the women in this film are oversexed, and the Native Americans should picket MGM/UA for the treatment they receive here. Get past the constant cursing and sexual innuendo, and you have a ninety minute bore. The hyperactively cute musical score will make you search for your revolver to put this video out of your misery. Awful. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Jane Fonda's first movie role as a mad-man brainey co-ed
"Tall Story" is noteworthy because it was Jane Fonda's first film, although contemporary audiences might be reminded somewhat of the plot of "Legally Blonde." After all, Fonda plays June Ryder, a brainey coed who goes to a particular college only because she is pursuing a star basketball player, Ray Blent (Anthony Perkins, who had just finished making "Psycho"). Of course, in retrospect we find it significant than in her first movie role Jane Fonda was the pursuer rather than the pursued. In her film debut she manages to be sex and innocent at the same time ("Beget," she coos at one point, "Isn't that a sweet word for it?"). But despite her game efforts and the chemistry between Fonda and Perkins, this is a badly dated film when you compare it to other youthful love stories like "A Summer Place." The film also offers Ray Walston as a prickly college professor, but this is still not enough to redeem it overall. This 1960 film was produced and directed by Joshua Logan, who was Fonda's "unofficial godfather." The screenplay by J. J. Epstein is based on the play by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse and the novel "The Homecoming Game" by Howard Nemerov. With that complicated pedigree it is not surprising that the constant barrage of jazzy wisecracks fall flat. Still, you cannot help but feel that Fonda has some potential as a movie actress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Movie/ Tall Story With Tony Perkins & Jane Fonda.
I think it was a great movie. It had me laughing and waiting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next.
It's about a girl named June Ryder,(Jane Fonda) who goes to the same college to capture the heart of a all-american basketball player Ray Blent (Anthony Perkins) and marry him. And she ends up in all of his classes. This movie includes Ray Walston, as the professor. This was a great movie which I think Anthony Perkins & Jane Fonda had chemistry. And the romance in it was wonderful. It has parts you have to rewind 2-3 times, (in my opinion anyway) Since I'm a big fan,and admire Anthony Perkins it was a enjoyable movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny- a unique little sleeper!
This film is not like too many I've seen. It has a very odd comic tone(I've only felt this kind of odd sexual energy when watching something like Pretty Maids All In A Row). Jane Fonda plays a young girl who's come to college to get married-that's all. She is a huge basketball fan-especially of the team's star player played by Anthony Perkins. On top of two very funny performances by those tow-you've also got Ray Walston. Ray is in rare form here and seems to show the beginnings of a Mr. Hand-type teacher. Very entertaining and very funny-but funny in an almost campy- clever 50s sitcom kind of way. Very Good!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars STRONG STORY WITH A TWIST FROM LANDON
Michael Landon directed and acted in Sam's Son, his autobiography, about his struggles as a kid growing up. He discovers his strengths are taking care of a bully, being a javelin thrower and helping his wonderful father. It's an inspirational film I truly enjoyed. I loved the ending of this movie. The Four Aces singing "Dream" over the closing credits was the icing on the cake.

Timothy Patrick Murphy (Mickey Trotter from Dallas) played the young Landon, and appeared to have a childhood-type likeness to Landon.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Know How You Hate Veiny Veal. . .
Just one of the brilliant lines in this wonderful film that is STILL not out on DVD.

Wonderful cast, although you have to buy that Cloris Leachman is the mother of Bonnie Bedelia and Anne Meara.

Best lines: Bea Arthur.
Best scene: love on a toilet seat.

And I wouldn't mind a book about Spain, either. . .

5-0 out of 5 stars A funny but sad look at marriage .
This film is a funny but sad commentary on marriage as seen through the eyes of different generations. The cast is wonderful, especially Bea Arthur as the wife and mother whose line, "I can understand you wanting to leave, but I can't understand you leaving" shows the difference in how women have changed in the way they look at marriage. Diane Keaton, Gig Young, Anne Jackson, and Richard Castellano are all excellent in their roles.

This is one of my top 10 movies and the song,"For All We Know" by the Carpenters fits perfectly with the theme.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a classic
This is over 30 years old, but still a classic. Diane Keaton fans will love her in one of her first roles. We still use some of the lines, especially "So, what's the story, Richie?" and I often tell my husband his hair smells like raisins just to let him know I still love him. I just wish Icould buy a copy at a reasonable price!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Something the "Viewer from Seattle" should consider!
I found this movie to be a splendid comedy, which kept me chuckling like I was on laughing gas. It's a spectacular comedy from husband-and-wife team Renée Taylor (The Nanny) and Joseph Bologna (Big Daddy). It's also a great thrill to see Golden Globe and Emmy-winning Beatrice Arthur, along with Bonnie Bedelia, Richard Castellano, Bob Dishy, Michael Brandon, a young future Oscar-winner Diane Keaton, and Oscar-nominee Gig Young in one of his last films. I recommend this movie for anyone who just loves movies in general!
~~As for that viewer from Seattle, I'm not mad at that particular section of his review, BUT [they] SHOULD take into consideration that the following statement:
****Favorite moment (for guys): a Steadicam shot of Bonnie Bedelia's face as she walks toward a bed. Not even Liz Taylor's face could rival Bedelia's for those few seconds. Favorite moment (for gals): Harry Guardino blowing a sweet, macho kiss to Anne Meara during the wedding ceremony.****
--Leaves out certain people.
I think, had they taken more consideration of other people into account, they would've had a stronger opening statement, which would've been written like this:
:._-~*Favorite moment (for gal-lovers): a Steadicam shot of Bonnie Bedelia's face as she walks toward a bed. Not even Liz Taylor's face could rival Bedelia's for those few seconds. Favorite moment (for guy-lovers): Harry Guardino blowing a sweet, macho kiss to Anne Meara during the wedding ceremony.*~-_.:
Now that's the way the review shoulda looked--at least mine should come-off better to the polite-at-heart.
----
Anyways, when deciding if you'd like to purchase the movie or not, I suggest you choose "Add To Shopping Cart"--because it will be a wise choice that you are heavily rewarded for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still funny after all these years
A big wedding, funny relatives, bittersweet relationships, a very young Diane Keaton -- what's not to love? In crowded theaters, Bob Dishy and Richard Castellano stole the show. Castellano still stands out, as do Gig Young and Bea Arthur. Favorite moment (for guys): a Steadicam shot of Bonnie Bedelia's face as she walks toward a bed. Not even Liz Taylor's face could rival Bedelia's for those few seconds. Favorite moment (for gals): Harry Guardino blowing a sweet, macho kiss to Anne Meara during the wedding ceremony. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Funny About Love
Let me begin by saying that I read the review about this movie by "petershelley". WHOA! How could anyone be so opposite of everything this movie was about!! He does not have a clue and I mean not one about life, people, love, emotion, vulnerability and what it is really all about. This guy is so off base I actually pity what a superficial life he must live. He needs to get off his pedestal and get down here where the real people live. I believe that the performance by Gene Wilder was phenomenol and I could FEEL his pain when his wife walked out the door after their break-up. Knowing Mr. Wilder's history with his departed wife, Gilda Radner, one can only guess at his source of the emotion he exibited in that scene. No wonder I could feel it-I don't think you call that acting. I think it was real. Does Mr. Shelley know what it feels like to want to have a child and not be able to? I think not. If he did he would understand the motivation behind the actions of Duffy in the movie "Funny About Love". ANYONE who has been there knows that you CANNOT intellectualize about such a thing as Mr. Shelley does in his review. IT JUST IS. Christine Lahti's character represents so much of what it is to be a woman these days and try to be everything to everyone and not lose herself and her dreams and ambitions. She very much needed to know that Duffy loved her more than he loved the dream of having a child. That what we have in the here and now is all we really ever have, and even that is temporary. Mary Stuart Masterson of course brought so much humor to a really pretty sad situation. Because of her ability to love unconditionally she was able to give something extraordinary of herself to someone she loved and cared about without having to OWN that person. She was able, out of friendship or love, to fulfill the dream of another human being and complete his life. What greater gift is there on this earth? What an amazing movie, I loved every minute of it and can't believe it has taken it over 10 years to cross my path. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE and of course "Immediate Family" is right up there with it. Alexis Baughman

5-0 out of 5 stars Gene Wilder Rules In This Romantic Comedy!!
Gene Wilder rules in this romantic comedy also co-starring Christine Lahti. It's a must see!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Duffy Bergman¿s biological clock is about to go off
This tale of Gene Wilder as a Gary Trudeau-like celebrity political humourist doesn't work as comedy, drama or romance. The screenplay by Norman Steinberg and David Frankel is based on an Esquire article by Bob Greene entitled Convention of the Love Goddesses, which is represented by Wilder speaking at an all female college, declaring that men are "self-pitying" and in awe of women. However this hardly qualifies as feminism, which director Leonard Nimoy amusingly plays with by having Wilder's car pass a line of phallic trees. The only relationship he seems to have with a woman where Wilder isn't controlling or negative is his affair with the much younger Mary Stuart Masterson, and even this is invalidated by his unwillingness to declare his emotion, echoed in Sotto Voce being the name of a featured restaurant.
The main romance here is with Christine Lahti. At first her disinterest in him gives her some strength. She is a waitress at a book signing event of his yet unimpressed with his fame. However wardrobe dress her in Annie Hall-wear and soon she is revealed to be self-consciously weak, which diminishes Lahti's otherwise appealing qualities. The inability of the couple to bear a child sours their relationship, and Lahti bears the teary-eyed guilt.
What is noticable about the treatment is the parallels to be made with Woody Allen movies, specifically Annie Hall and Manhattan. Masterson is a bad driver like Diane Keaton was, and swears the way Keaton did in Manhattan, and the age difference recalls Allen and Mariel Hemmingway. Wilder too gets his share of arrogant jokes at the expense of others, and has Allen's ability to extend his performance beyond the comic persona. His reductive James Cagney imitation is about the only thing I liked.
At first Nimoy paces at a clip, aided by the music score of Miles Goodman, but soon the timing comes to a holt and we're left stranded with people we'd rather do without. It's not encouraging that Anne Jackson as Wilder's acerbic mother is quickly disposed of. The treatment's continued coverage of Lahti telegraphs events, and only the most desperate of romantics can be pleased with the conclusion. ... Read more

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is less an adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel than a complete reimagining of it from the inside out. InKing's book, the Overlook Hotel is a haunted place that takes possession of its off-season caretaker and provokes him to murderous rage against his wife and young son. Kubrick's movie is an existential Road Runner cartoon (his steadicam scurrying through the hotel's labyrinthine hallways), in which the cavernously empty spaces inside the Overlook mirror the emptiness in the soul of the blocked writer, who's settled in for a long winter's hibernation. As many have pointed out, King's protagonist goes mad, but Kubrick's Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is Looney Tunes from the moment we meet him--all arching eyebrows and mischievous grin. (Both Nicholson and Shelley Duvall reach new levels of hysteria in their performances, driven to extremes by the director's fanatical demands for take after take after take.) The Shining is terrifying--but not in the way fans of the novel might expect. When it was redone as a TV miniseries (reportedly because of King's dissatisfaction with the Kubrick film), the famous topiary-animal attack (which was deemed impossible to film in 1980) was there--but the deeper horror was lost. Kubrick's The Shining gets under your skin and chills your bones; it stays with you, inhabits you, haunts you. And there's no place to hide... --Jim Emerson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heeeere's Johnny! A modern horror classic on DVD
It's tough to believe that Stanley Kubrick received a Worst Director Razzie nomination for "The Shining." 5-0 out of 5 stars interesting story line and historical too
I found the movie very interesting. I may be biased toward the film since actually I appear in the last scene of this movie (one of the boys at the study table in the black synagogue that Zero Mostel visits) The late Chief Rabbi W.A. Matthew (my grandfather)has an appearance in the movie leading the study group discussion in the historic landmark Harlem synagogue. Although not in the final edit, during filming it was an interesting scripted discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie
I watched this on cable and loved it so much I had to buy it. Very different Kind of Movie. I really enjoyed it so much:-)

3-0 out of 5 stars Promise Unfulfilled
Zero Mostel plays a poor schlemiel by the name of Mishkin, who is visited by a Jewish angel named Levine. Levine is played by Harry Belafonte! This certainly promises some very clever and very amusing moments. Unfortunately, the promise remains unkept. In fact, the film never really gets started. I can remember thinking what a long time it was taking to get going, and then the closing credits started to scroll; it never got going. What is particularly disappointing is that this is a film I wanted very much to like. Alas, we don't always get what we want. ... Read more
