It really doesn't matter. This movie, regrettably is available only on VHS, will give you insight, understanding, and hope. Hope, that most fragile of words, is the basis of this incredible made-for-TV motion picture. Bill Wilson comes home from World War I a hero. He then conquers Wall Street. He marries the love of his life, Lois. He then discovers both a new god, a new lover, a new idol; the bottle. This unflinching film looks at the descent of of alcoholic into hell, and his journey back, guided, not by the spirit of Virgil, but by another alcoholic, Doctor Bob. Together, they find a "cure" for an "incurable" disease. The disease of alcoholism. Neither could cure themselves, but together, they could find the way out of hell into if not paradise, at least life; life on life's terms. This film has been called the AA "Roots." I won't take up that guantlet. This film stands alone. The performances by James Woods, JoBeth Williams and James Garner stand on their own merits. It tells the story of one man's descent into the hell of addiction < and YES, alcoholism is an addiction >, and his return to the land of the living. Woods plays Bill W. with remarkable restraint, not denigrating into the hystrionics of Jack Lemmon in "The Lost Weekend"; as brilliant and well-meaning as that film is. Nor does this movie fall into high camp, as did "Reefer Madness" in the late Thirties. Instead, in "My Name Is Bill W.", we see a man driven to the depths of despair. A man beaten is beaten into the dust. To quote Cecil B. DeMille, "the dust from which prophets and holy men are formed. . ." Yet, this film is not preachy. It tells a story. A true story, all the more frightening, because it is true. Watch this movie. Listen to its message of hope, of truth, of honesty, openness, and willingness. Hear the story of the damned, who somehow, someway, found salvation. You will be moved. I promise you.

The sentiment here is laid on thick. Nell is harrassed by those stereotypical movie rejects, scientists and red necks. The scientists want her brought in for study; the red necks want to play a little doctor (Can you say Deliverance?) There are a number of nice scenes portraying the bonding between the three leads, and the direction by the talented Michael Apted is sensitive and well-intentioned, but Nell suffers by asking us to shed too many unearned tears. In this regard, most damaging is the lack of key exposition. We never really get to know Nell. Her mystery, while at first quite interesting, loses its novelty by the time they take the wide-eyed country girl to the big bad city. The biggest roadblock has to be Jodie Foster. Her pagan-like emoting as she dances naked through the woods is two stations short of hamville. It's like she wants us to believe so desperately in Nell's tragic story that she has to use a few neon signs to show us the way. Thanks, but I think we can handle it ourselves. Neeson is more effective, and he and real-life wife Richardson do a nice job of counterbalancing Foster's excess in the role of Nell's surrogate ma and pa.
Guys, this is a great movie. Even if you prefer action movies to chick flicks, the woman you are with will be totally moved by the movie and that you watched it with her. Parents, this is also a great movie for teenagers. Nell, played by Jodie Foster, has had no contact with anyone other than her now dead mother, so she has no sense of shame about her body. She is as free as a three year old in taking off her clothes to go swimming at night. Therefore, while there is nudity, there is no sexuality. And the nudity is not exploitive. (This is like the nudity you used to find on the pages of old National Geographics on articles about Africa.) On the balance, the sensitivity outweighs concerns about nudity, this may even be a way to spark conversation with your kids about puberty, etc.

Final Sacrifice is the sequel to the original 1984 Children of the Corn movie (which is based on a short story by Stephan King in the book Night Shift). It begins some time after the events of CotC 1 (though you don't have to watch the first movie to understand the second); police men came into Gatlin and found all the bodies of the dead parents, now they are taking the children to Hemingford, a town 19 miles away. The film centers around a disfuntional father and son pair. John, the father, is a reporter who brough Danny, the son, with him to get the story of the corn children to save his failing career. Once in Hemmingford; they meet Micah (note for the girls: he's a serious hotty), the new (possessed) leader of the children, do their little investigation thang, find love, almost get killed, and save the day as they ALWAYS do in CotC films. This movie has gorey and VERY original death scenes, including my favorite ever where one person has a nosebleed to death (~.^) and many others that may make you giggle, if you're not over sensative about that kind of stuff. So, I would recommend this movie to any fan of CotC or corny horror flicks. I would not recommend this movie to anyone in the academy. Let's leave it at that, a'ight?

On first viewing, this film looks like a straight faced slasher flick, but as you delve deeper, you see it's satirical edge, which is also done very straight faced. (anyone expecting "Scary Movie" will be sorely dissapointed) It really is a very well made Horror flick, only missing out on the 5th star as it's a little too familiar to the 90's horror Father "Scream". In fact, out of all of Scream's Offspring, this one is most familiar. It doesn't follow Screams rules, but it has it's feel. Geoffrey Wright's Direction is Above average, less flashy than most, Michael Biehn is always a welcome face and he leads the film and the town as the sherrif and father of Britney Murphy, playing the girl-who-just-won't die. P.S. Finally, a Horror film with a killer that can run really fast, he doesnt stalk like Pepe-la-phew. (a la "I know what you did last summer")
Flavor of the month Brittany Murphy is Jody, a pasty high school student having problems with her horndog boyfriend Kenny (Gabriel Mann). Kenny wants to do it, Jody does not, and the two break up. This occurs the same night another teenage couple are hacked to death. Jody's dad is Sheriff Marken (Michael Biehn), who stoically investigates the killings. After another student is killed, Marken goes to the high schoolers' parents with a tidbit of information- the killer carved the word VIRGIN into the victims, and it seems the victims were in fact virgins. This causes a giant uproar, as the students decide the only way to save themselves from the killer is to have sex, and the parents half heartedly say no. Jody is attacked at the meeting, and has a sketch done of the killer. The killer is identified as a girl who disappeared from town over two decades before, and suddenly town secrets start rising to the surface. Jody does her own investigation, and the prerequisite bloody climax (sorry) occurs at the giant high school sex party. This film made me sad. The director went with a bunch of browns and earth tones, the likes of which I have not seen since I last changed my son's diaper. All the students have a pasty look to them. Everyone seems to wear black, even the sheriff and his deputies sport the latest in brown wear. This is depressing to watch. I also came to hate every character in the movie. When watching a slasher film, one should not feel more sympathy for the killer than for the victims. All the adults here are troubled alcoholics who are quick to get into dumb fistfights (the school meeting). All the high schoolers here are stupid horny pot heads who make jokes about the killings. Why bother hoping these people make it until the end of the film? Wright, who somehow went from directing "Romper Stomper" to this mess, gets some real mean murders out of his film. However, he also falls for every damn cliche you have seen in every other damn slasher film. From the jump cut (heroine bumps into someone who turns out to be harmless), to the villain coming back to life one final time, I wanted to throw something at the screen. There is a germ of morbid humor near the end of the film, watch for a severed hand in a student's hair, but it is too little too late. "Cherry Falls" is bathed in unpleasantness. I thought I was going to need a shower after this. Hopefully, this new round of slasher flicks is ending so we can wait another twelve years for "something new" to come along. "Cherry Falls" and should have stayed down.
The Positive side of this movie (its moral story) was that there is no such thing as perfect crime and the Negative side of this movie is IT's existence - because we don't actually need to see movies like this especially when we bear in mind that some sicko in our lovely planet might try something similar after being inspired by it. ... After fighting against the French during the Seven Years War under the guidance of Sir William Johnson (Pierce Brosnan), an Englishman who genuinely admires the Iroquois, but who is only too eager to manipulate them for the purposes of the Crown, the Mohawks soon find themselves caught in the middle of the American Revolution, with both sides hoping to lure the powerful Confederacy to their cause. While Lohaheo urges neutrality, Brant joins the Britsh and fights with great ferocity against the Americans at Oriskany and Wyomissing. The two must face an uncertain future for their people and struggle to save a way of life whose existence is threatened by the people with and against whom they fight. This is a good stab at a movie that brings this period of our history to life and tells a story that is too often ignored, not just the history of the Eastern Frontier, but the important role played by the Six Nations in the history of America.

Sinbad plays Agent Sam Simms, the secret service agent assigned to the first kid. He is great throughout and easily the best part of the movie. Brock Pierce is also good as Luke Davenport, the First Kid who struggles to lead a normal life in the spotlight. The movie also stars Blake Boyd, Timothy Busfield, Robert Gillaume, Art LaFleur, and Zachary Ty Bryan. The DVD offers no extras, but the movie is worth a watch even with the lousy DVD. For a funny movie with a great performance by Sinbad, check out First Kid!

A Colombian drug lord is extradited to America and his son is determined to get him back---at any cost. Luis Caldez hatches a cold-hearted scheme to kidnap the son of the man who will be the judge in his father's case. The boy attends a private school called St. Regis Academy, headed by Louis Gosset, Jr. as its dean. The school, nicknamed The Rejects' Academy, contains a student body that consists of boys tossed out from other schools for disciplinary problems. These kids hate and defy authority routinely. Chief among the troublemakers are Billy Tepper(Sean Astin) and Joey Trotta(Wil Wheaton), who hatch a clever scheme to free the school from the terrorists. The ensuing twists and turns and near-misses work well to maintain the adrenalin level, which heightens when the bad guys kill one boy, whose father just happens to be the head of the New Jersey Mafia. This tragic event pushes the action up to a fever pitch as the angry mobster exacts his revenge in a fitting way. Some of the action seems a bit implausible, but that doesn't take away from the joyride of watching the boys defy their odious captors. The viewer almost pities the terrorists for what they've gotten themselves into by ticking off these toy soldiers. The movie is enjoyable, with plenty of heart and fine acting. Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton are great as the head rebel and his partner in crime. Louis Gosset, Jr. demonstrates why he's an Oscar-caliber performer. Denholm Elliot is endearing as the gentle headmaster who maintains dignity throughout the menace. Andrew Divoff is creepy as the calculating and ultimately psychotic Luis Caldez. An uncredited Jerry Orbach gives an intense performance as the slain boy's father, evoking both loathing for his criminal career and compassion for his pain over the loss of his son. The rest of the cast is in excellent form, too, and carries the story forward. All in all, this is a great flick for those who enjoy action, especially teenagers. There's plenty of foul language and graphic violence that are not for the sensitive of ears or stomach, but most viewers should find this one a great ride. Enjoy the exploits of those daring young men!

The Stepford Husbands, is a very good movie. It could have been a whole lot better, for example casting someone other than Donna Mills as the heroine. But it does still insight the original disturbing thought, of a society that creates partners to perfection. I always said they should do one for the husbands! I'm sure my mum would send my dad to that clinic! Like the Stepford Children starring Barbara Eden, this movie uses sterotypical marital problems to justify why the men should be changed. It works in some places and not in others, as the story is being rushed along for the discovery of what happens to the men. The poor blokes get tubes stuck down their throats and tubes put into their navel, painful!:) and worst of all, they have to do yoga! Basically the movie works very well, capturing some of the paranoia from Ira Levin's novel The Stepford Wives, while still adding new enjoyment into a new story. Worthwhile buying, especially if you are a stepford fan!
I thought that it was very well done. Donna Mills has her usual glamour, and Michael Ontkean is very good in this role. It is suspensful and creepy, and at the risk of sounding pretentious, it is very well edited. I also liked the music. Sure, the conclusion is a little cheesy, but hey, it's a TV movie! Louise Fletcher is also in this, who is always wonderful. I enjoyed the "look" of this movie, it's worth the price, and some very good acting. Donna's not a great actress, but she's just great at playing Donna Mills!

Although many have said Hush is a forgettable film, I believe it is quite the contrary. 1997 was a few years ago and this film stands firmly within my memory. It really is an excellent throwback to the Joan Crawford and Bette Davis thrillers of the 1960s. First, there is beautiful cinematography, a lush score, and excellent acting (besides Gwyneth Paltrow, who positively sucks in this film!). Its true that you long for Lange to hit Paltrow with a lamp, to stop her insufferable whining! This is a far cry from her excellent performance in the recent Sylvia. I guess the thing you will love about Hush is that it is fun to watch. It is not garbage like most people would have you believe, but in fact a very well-made, well-acted, classy thriller with a great score and a great star (Lange). And, for the record, the plot is great!
Only child, Jackson Baring, played by Johnathan Schaech is the quintessential and clueless man-child mama's boy. His love interest and the first girlfriend he has ever brought home to meet his mama (no wonder!), Helen, played quite off-kilter by Gwyneth Paltrow. They journey to the Baring's Thoroughbred Horse Farm, Kilronan for Christmas to meet "mama". Jessica Lange, is mama Martha Baring. Lange superbly but quite over the top plays Jackson's demanding, clinging, cross between Queen Jocasta & Blanche Du Bois on crack mama. Martha fawns, flirts, grabs, and kisses on her only baby boy in quite a non-maternal way through most of the film. Martha is obsessed and quite in love with her own son and has done some "doozies" to keep him where she wants him. Hal Halbrook has a nice couple of scenes as obstetrician, Dr. Franklin Hill and ol' dame, Nina Foch (Spartacus, The Ten Commandments, Scaramouche) turns in a terrific performance as Great Aunt Alice Baring that has been on to Martha for years and knows exactly what she is capable of. Torture, drugging, murder, lust & incestuous thoughts and deeds ensue! A great thriller with decent performances and a strong storyline all the way around. Happy Watching and Be Careful Of Those Momster-In-Laws!

In one of his rare moments in films lately, Burt Reynolds portrays "Eli Zeal," a shopkeeper who learns about forgiveness and that is truly human to make mistakes. With an ensemble cast which includes April Grace, Whitman Mayo, Orlando Jones, Ja'net Dubois, and Anthony Lee, this is a marvelous film and it is filled with powerful performances from this cast. The movie is heartwrenching and the music is equally phenomenal in its depiction of life in the deep South. Prepare yourself for some profound story telling. Highly recommended!!!
Waterproof offers tender, yet sturdy spirituality. It points to truth as the ultimate medicine to heal troubled lives. While well-meaning lies unravel, truth brings pain and shame, but also freedom and hope. The acting is powerful in its subtlety and believability. The characters let the plot and dialogue carry the story along, rather than forcing their talent to overshadow this incredible tale. There is emotion--real and dramatic--but its never shrill--never coerced. The bottom line is that this is a family movie with strong story and acting. There is much here that will draw out discussion and thought. Buy, rent or borrow this film--but see it! ... Read more | |
