5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Movie!!!!
I saw this movie twice on TV and loved it both times; I've been looking for it to buy so I can add it to my "Classic" collection, along with Dr. Zhivago. Very worth seeing, buying. Robert Urich's performance is fantastic; as usual he pulls the audience in and allows it to feel what he is feeling whether it's laughing or crying. His eyes are so incredible, his look so deep; he easily enters your heart. He did mine... and will remain there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Robert Urich is worth the price of admission
This is a rich drams with some nice twists and turns. Best of all is the opportunity to see Robert Urich in a role that allows him to express the sensitivity and caring that he had in real life. The story is sweet -- definitely captivating -- but it's especially dear to me now that Robert Urich is no longer with us. A special man and fine actor, he is superb in this film. Many of us will miss him and recall his courage and good humor as he dealt with his illness. As good as this film is, Robert Urich's performance is worth the price of admission! It's also safe to say that any Danielle Steel fan will *love* this movie!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad Movie!
I didn't like this movie at all. No movie made of any books of Danielle Steel is good, well it's rare that a movie is as good as the book is, the book is always better. I had like reading the book but the movie who was made out of it was so bad and boring!

5-0 out of 5 stars a really good movie

4-0 out of 5 stars "I think your whiskey sucks"
Jeff Fahey is the sketch artist. A rich, important man has been murdered and Drew Barrymore is a witness who saw a woman that the police would like to talk to. She describes the woman to Fahey. As the sketch continues he finds he is drawing a picture of his wife (Sean Young). Daisy leaves, he folds up the picture and draws another which unfortunately looks like another woman who has done work for the deceased. As the story unfolds, Fahey is starting to look like the number one suspect. I wouldn't rate this show a "4" if it wasn't for the excellent musical score by Mark Isham. The soundtrack to this movie is one of the best. This story couldn't happen in real life. For one thing, Fahey withheld evidence in a felony investigation that got Daisy killed and should be charged with a felony himself. Fahey also gets way too lucky in this movie, everything seems to work out so coincidentally for him in the last half hour. Still, I think it's a good show, the music does a lot for many of the scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Jeff Fahey Film.
Young Jeff Fahey delivers an eloquent portrayal of a police sketch artist who realizes that the witness has just described his wife as the murderess. This is a fine example of how Fahey uses his whole body to portray the emotions of a man who cannot believe, investigates, and finally must believe that his beloved is a cold-blooded murderer. Daren't give away the ending, but it is most satisfying, and on the way, we are treated to a refreshingly subtle repetoire of skills: small facial changes, gestures, postures, and all out panic-runs describe the changes we all would go through before acting on the realization that the unthinkable is true.
Anyone would find this a fine movie. A must for Faheylovers.

2-0 out of 5 stars More Drew
Hello, Well I saw the movie and I thought Drew looked great but it needed more Drew in it like to last in the movie, now scream is a differant story she didn't last but the cast was a great selection and worth watching to see what happens next, I would reccomend Scetch Artist to those who don't like Drew Barrymore hehe, I adore her so that is why I didn't like it. @->---------- :)

Description

Hollywood's hottest young stars light up this wildly funny and outrageously sexy story of love and friendship in the '90s! Best friends Adam (Josh Charles -- TV's SPORTS NIGHT, THREESOME), and Kevin (Jon Bon Jovi -- U-571, PAY IT FORWARD) have a lot in common. Probably too much! In fact, Kevin is carrying on a torrid affair with Adam's girlfriend, Nina (Annabella Sciorra -- WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, COP LAND), on the side! And if this triangle wasn't crowded enough, the arrival of a seductive newcomer in town, Rebecca (Penelope Ann Miller -- THE RELIC, CARLITO'S WAY), promptly adds a whole new set of twists to an already tangled mix! Here's a hilarious look at how modern relationships have never been so complicated ... or so much fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Little City is a Big Film!
A wonderful ensemble cast give this movie someone for everyone to enjoy watching. The beautiful Joanna Going, Penelope Ann Miller,Annabella Sciorra, and JoBeth Williams all are superb. With some adult themes and content this movie is probably not suitable for young children, but, there is nothing that can be considered dirty in the movie. The male stars are Josh Charles and Jon Bob Jovi of Rock & Roll fame. Sort of a modern "St. Elmos Fire" type of movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than "Chasing Amy"
If you liked "Chasing Amy" but were not totally satisfied with it in some way or another, you might find "Little City" better in many ways. I did. I tend to easily fall for comedies with witty, sarcastic lines, and plots that don't strain themselves in a silly way to happy endings. So this movie really got me. The script, while not offering quite unpredictable twists and turns, was beautifully written and brought to life by a strong cast: Annabelle Sciorra, Penelope Ann Miller, Joanna Going, JoBeth Williams, Josh Charles and Jon Bon Jovi (speaking of this guy, you got to see him in "Moonlight and Valentino" too -- he's awesome). One thing that surprised me was that IMDB didn't list any "memorable quote" from this film, as there's quite a lot that'd make you burst out laughing every 5 minutes or so. Apart from the mysterious acronym "O.G.T." (as later explained by Adam), I particularly enjoyed this dialogue: (Kate) "Every relationship gets a bit domestic after a certain point, we could have worked on it". (Anne) "We shouldn't have to work on it. It isn't a crossword puzzle. It's passion. And quite frankly, we ran out of it"... Okay, I better not give away more. Your turn to find it all out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Relationships
Definitely a relationship movie!! This movie is about a group of single adults who each have their own relationship issues and sexual preferences. This movie is about how they deal with these, work through them and accept them via mistakes, counseling/therapy/confession etc. The setting is the small community of San Francisco where it seems everyone knows everyone and therefore secrets and rumors get around quickly.

This is the first movie I have seen Jon Bon Jovi in and I was impressed. He actually can act! I thought the movie started out slow, but as it progressed and all the characters were introduced it started to get very interesting and I was curious to watch it all unfold and I wondered who was going to end up with who at the end of the movie!

As always Annabella Scioria is great, pretty and believable.

"Little City" is worth watching, just don't expect it to be thrilling, greatly suspenseful or a tear jerker. I doubt it will stir up too much emotion, but all in all it is a good movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Character movies, a near-extinct breed
Little City provides the viewer with a charged, young energy that seems to have left us behind since the days of movies like "St. Elmos Fire" or "The Big Chill." Seldom does a movie come along that can actually find itself viewable while dealing with an ensemble cast and trying to stick to a cohesive plot. We find all our characters facing their own trials of life in San Franciso. Jon Bon Jovi brings an honest and charming aproach that has been lost from the acting world. It helps his character stand apart at times from the others. Though the supporting cast does throw in some excellent support from Annabella Sciorra (The Sopranos) and Josh Charles(Sport Night). Though it does come up lacking that certain "punch" at the end, I think you will find this movie to be a suprising commentary on growing up under the intense scrutiny of society. Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweethearts' selection
A romantic comedy with a modern twist, Little City is about a group of people who struggle with life, love, and relationships in the deceptively small social circles of San Francisco. The production boats a strong ensemble cast starring Josh Charles, Jon Bon Jovi, Anabella Sciorra, Penelope Ann Miller, Joanna Going, and JoBeth Williams. Written and directed by Robert Benabib, Little City is produced by Bandeira Entertainment's Beau Flynn, Stefan Simchowitz, Ron Wechsler, and Jeff Davidson and co-produced by Mary Vernieu.

In the "little city" by the bay, the lives of Adam, Kevin, Nina, Rebecca and Kate become interwined in a complicated web of sex, jealousy, obsession and finally, true love. Adam(Josh Charles), an artist moonlighting as a cab driver, is unable to maintain steady relationships with women. He blames this on his fixation with his ex-girlfriend, Kate(Joanna Going) who left him for a lesbian lover, Ann(JoBeth Williams). Carrying this torch for Kate has led Adam to neglect his current girlfriend, Nina(Annabella Sciorra) who turns to his philandering best friend, Kevin(Jon Bon Jovi). The illicit affair starts off as purely physical attraction, but ends up being much more once Kevin realizes his true feelings for Nina.

Another love triangle forms as Adam tries to juggle his developing with Rebecca(Penelope Ann Miller) and his desire to win Kate back. Rebecca is the new girl in town who discovers, in more ways than one, just how small the single community is in San Francisco. It is Rebecca's ability to take chances with her heart that eventually wins Adam over in this charming picturesque film. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Much of a Playboy Movie
I don't know about anybody else, but when I rent (or purchase, in this case) a movie that has anything to do with Playboy, I'm pretty much looking for one type of movie. I don't really care about the plot, I don't care about the musical score, nor do I care about the acting. Which is good, because all of the above were crummy. Stacy Haiduk and Ron Silver appeared to give some form of effort, but everyone else, even Suzy Amis (granddaughter in Titanic), appeared to be sleepwalking through their roles.

I've always been an admirer of Stacy Haiduk, ever since her days on SeaQuest. I thought: Stacy Haiduk in a Playboy film! How can it go wrong? Well, it did. Terribly so. Yes, Stacy Haiduk is gorgeous, but she has all of three sex scenes, only one with any nudity at all (a couple of topless shots, nothing great). And it's not well done nudity -- she doesn't even look that good. There is only one other (very brief) sex scene in the entire film. Unless there are entirely new scenes inserted into the film, it's fairly obvious there is no unrated version either.

I'll confess to having bought the movie for skin and gotten virtually none. I didn't buy the movie for its storyline or acting, but those were even worse. Skip this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Beneficiary's Problems
I'm a retired law enforcement guy. There is a murder and the first thing I'd do is look for is "who get's the money". The title is "The Beneficiary." In this movie they never tell you who get's the money. They know, but never tell you until the movie is 3/4 over ]bad investigators I'd say] and you're supposed to be hooked on how good the female part of the detective's act is. She's blonde [In a Playboy Made Movie] so that's explains it, but then you see her acting smart yet totally missing the point. This is a Playboy movie and of course seeing the Logo you have to realize that blondes are bimbo's. It sells magazines, but it didn't sell me. Les Barba

1-0 out of 5 stars A horrible film!!!
The glowing reviews for this film are absolutely ridiculous. As a low-budget filmmaker myself, I appreciate what Gabriela is trying to do, but I wish the filmmakers had taken some more time and tried harder. Perhaps tried to raise a few more dollars to give the film some sort of quality. The film is slow moving and bland, but the characters realistic, which is a plus. There is really nothing to recommend it though, the story has been used countless times before to a much better effect, both in Hollywood and independent films. It is utterly predictable, with no surprises along the way. NONE.

Seidy Lopez, who played Gabriela, was absolutely horrid. Her voice was too low and annoying, and half of what she said was hard to understand. She seemed to phone in her performance with a flat voice and the same expression no matter what was going on. Jaime Gomez, however, was good as her love interest. Haven't seen much of his other work, but I am now interested. Lupe Ontiveros (Real Women Have Curves) was wasted as the grandmother. Putting her name third in the credits is unjust and misleading. She has five minutes screentime. And why aren't there any English subtitles for the Spanish language scenes? It is unfair for anyone who doesn't speak Spanish and does not understand what is being said. That aspect of the film is what made me mad more than anything.

Also, I know this is a low budget film, but the sound quality was horrible. I had to keep rewinding to understand what was being said, and I still couldn't! The actors speak in unnaturally low voices. Combine that with bad sound equipment and half the film is inaudible. Also, what's with the love scenes? Whoever heard of anyone making love in their underwear? Doesn't make sense to me.

I believe the rating for this movie has been rigged on both Amazon.com and IMDB.com. It's not a coincidence that all the glowing reviews sound exactly alike, are written only a few days apart, and there is no information on its authors. I believe that is pathetic on the part of the filmmakers to get viewers. They know they have a loser here and are trying to milk it for what it's worth by posting fake 'glowing' reviews. That's ridiculous. The icing on the cupcake of a stupid idea executed very badly, by people who obviously have no idea what they're doing. Sorry.

Even for independent film lovers like myself, this film was a terrible waste of time. I almost didn't finish it. I can't recommend it to anyone. Stay away, you have been warned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Love Story
Completely on the opposite side of the drab and often poorly written indie films focusing on unrealistic characters, "Gabriela" offers real people in involving circumstances. I wish there were more independent films like this, it would bring me back to the theater.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst movie I've ever seen
I'm really surprised by the positive reviews here. This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The plot was simplistic and bland, the characters uninteresting and flat, and the script was poorly written. Every scene with the female lead in it was shot with a glowing, warm filter that made the film look like a really tacky greeting card. There was a scene early on in which the male lead got a new credit card in the mail and decided to go spend money on expensive stereo equipment, including purchasing some for his friend simply because he had this "free money." The movie never came back to this or critiqued this extremely stupid view of money and credit. I know this sounds like a petty critique, but if you see the movie, you'll see why it seems so absurd. Later in the film we are meant to be pleased with the same character's intelligence with money, because he hides his cash when he goes to Mexico so it won't be stolen by crooked cops.

The DVD was very poor quality: there are a lot of moment when it "freezes" and moves choppily because of low digital quality; I expect this in low budget films of course, but when the movie's bad I get impatient. And while there were Spanish subtitles available for the English text of the film, there were no English subtitles for the parts in Spanish. This seemed a really foolish decision on the part of the filmmakers, because it means that the climactic scene between Gabriela and her mother is incomprehensible. Was this intentional? I can't imagine why.

If you're interested in seeing a movie about the clash of Mexican-American culture and white-bread American values, this film is not worth your money--instead, check out "Real Women Have Curves," an honest, well-written, truly enjoyable exploration of similar themes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very original, touching, funny love story
I just found this film to be good in every way. What a breath of fresh air to see such a genuine, heartfelt film like they don't make in Hollywood anymore. Full of wonderful moments and excellent performances (Troy Winbush as Douglas and Lupe Ontiveros as Grandma Josie are a riot!). Just a wonderful surprise for an independent film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Independent Film
What a great surprise! I hadn't much heard about "Gabriela" and wasn't expecting much when I saw it in the theater. It has a lot of wonderful little details and moments. Every character is interesting and the film kind of makes me think of Robert Altman in that way. It also makes me think of "Annie Hall" in that there is a lot of humor and a lot of funny smaller characters, but the love story part is serious. The jokes don't keep you from taking the main characters' story seriously. Jaime Gomez and Seidy Lopez have great chemistry as the leads and I like all of the other performances. Lupe Ontiveros is hilarious as the grandma and Troy Winbush is great as the ladies man best friend. I didn't expect much becuase I had heard it was a romantic film, but it's very original and creative. I especially like that you care for all three of the characters caught up in the love triangle and you really don't know what is going to happen in the end. And the music is great! ...

Les Barba
