Three separate story lines set in Africa eventually come together in this 1980 film by Jamie Uys. (The film wasn't released in the U.S., where it became a huge hit, until 1984.) Story one involves a bushman whose discovery of a Coke bottle causes consternation among his tribe, story two concerns an awkward romance between a clumsy scientist and a sweet schoolteacher, and the third plot involves a group of terrorists on the run. Slapstick, satire, romance, violence--it's all here in a somewhat bumpy but entertaining movie. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Materialism vs. the simple life of the Bushmen
I found this movie to be a satire on our modern way of life in comparison to the life lived by the bushmen of the Kalahari. I think the filmmaker really believes, at least to some extent, that there are definite advantages to living in a non-modern society. It was quite intersesting how a simple coke bottle came and torchered the lives of these people on the Kalahari. I would like to express that through all they did to the bottle it should have broken. It did not, however, and it soon caused strife to come among them. Interestingly enough, my initial reaction, was to write that certainly they had strife among themselves of this nature before. A reassessment causes me to say that I don't know, I have never lived in a non materialistic society. To me everything can go back to the theme of the unhappiness possessions bring. The white man had a jeep, but we saw how much hassle the jeep was trying to pick up the lady. If she just walked things would have been simpler. Guns were available to civilization and because of that, a group was able to take a large number of childen hostage. That could not happen in the Bushmen society. It also seemed like everytime the white man tried to impress the woman, it was material things that he tipped over or tripped over. Maybe without those possesions he could have been more impressive to the schoolteacher. Who has the right to say which civilization is truly more advanced. It all depends on your perception of advancement.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent family film with a positive story line.
I saw this movie about 10 years ago on HBO. We taped it butwatched it so much the tape broke. Now I want to buy it for my videocollection but to my dismay, no one has it. Even the internet says it's out of print. For the life of me I don't see why some enterprising person in the movie business has not re-released this film. They would make my day and a lot of money. Most of the films released today have little to no social value and are certainly not films you want your kids or grandkids to see. PLEASE BRING THIS MOVIE BACK!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe there's only one review
This is a classic film. It will not make you roll on the floor in laughter, but it will make you smile & admire this man's desire to rid his tribe of this evil thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A buried treasure, a family gem
*Finally,* this film has been released on DVD. I was beginning to wonder if it ever would be. This was an international hit, and it's PG, very nearly a G (it's fine for ten year-olds; younger is OK too but they wouldn't get as much out of it). A perfect example of the kind of film that can only be made by a filmmaker on a mission who is not beholden to investors. Run, do not walk, to acquire this movie. It's wholesome and hilarious and exciting, a real pleaser for a ten year-old or a ninety year-old or anyone in between. When you see it, you'll wonder how you never heard of it before. It's a great movie to play to people who don't know what you're showing them, because its beginning makes it look like an old nature documentary. People will be thinking, "Whoa, what am I getting myself into here?" A few minutes later, they'll be riveted to their seats. Ten stars!

3-0 out of 5 stars A little amusing.
'The Gods Must be Crazy' is an amusing film about a Coke bottle that causes havoc among a group of tribesmen. It is suppoed to be a satire about industralized socitey. Check it out if it comes on T.V. someday. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Naked Does Not Mean Defenseless
Most films which have the basic premise of a white man battling native Africans somewhere in the Dark Continent usually portray these natives as nameless, unmotivated ugga-mugga tribesmen whose only purpose in life seems to be able to toss missionaries into a round cooking pot. Thankfully, Cornel Wilde acts in and directs himself in THE NAKED PREY, a movie that is as astoundingly gripping as any film whose plot revolves around the hero's struggle for survival in a savage environment.
Wilde is a guide whose safari of foolish white hunters antagonizes some ferocious natives, who proceed to kill the hunters in a variety of graphically nasty ways. The natives allow Wilde a head start, then chase him. It is this chase that forms the bulk of the movie. Along the way, Wilde shows the natives (and the audience) that a near naked white man can still be a formidable foe. The pursuing natives, led by Ken Gampu, are a diverse lot, not all of whom are as dedicated to the chase as he is. They have numbers, food, knives. Wilde has only his fierce determination to live. What starts out as a standard chase movie, morphs quickly enough into another sort of chase. This time, though, it is Wilde who starts calling the shots about who is chasing whom. THE NAKED PREY is full of magnificent vignettes of survival on the African plain. This is no jungle movie. It is an engrossing film that allows the camera frequent panoramic sweeps over vast desert plains that are quite capable of supporting life if one only knows how. The natives are astonished that Wilde's knowledge is at least as full as theirs. Along the way, Wilde befriends a very young boy whose family was captured by Arabic slavers, and it is this boy whose very initial helplessness reminds Wilde that vulnerability is a trait that has the practical value of reminding one that arrogance on the plain is a negative survival characteristic. The latter half of the movie is a continuing series of confrontations between Wilde and Gampu. By the end, both the pursued and the pursuer recognize that sometimes the distinction between the two is a muddied affair at best, and the winner is not necessarily the one with a trophy, but with a recognition that all life, even the life of your enemy, has some value during a deadly game of chase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exciting, well paced adventure shot entirely in Africa.
Actor/director Cornel Wilde has fashioned a tight, well crafted adventure story of survival in the African bush with "The Naked Prey". The story involves the capture of a party of white trophy hunters by a tribe of native Africans, who are gruesomely tortured to death one-by-one. Cornel Wilde, whose clothes had been removed by the natives in preparation of his execution, succeeds in escaping (hence the title of the movie). The rest of the film involves his fight for survival in the wilderness while being pursued by a group of native warriors.

The film starts out slowly but the tension builds as the white hunters ignore and insult the natives that they see as harmless. The scenes of torture and death are quite graphic for a mid-60's film and because of this the film is not for family viewing. The movie really takes off once Cornel Wilde escapes and his fight for survival is as realistic as it is gruesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of my all time favorites
I accidentally caught this movie late at night when I was a kid...and found it the most gripping movie I had ever seen. 30 years later my opinion has not changed one bit. After an hour into the movie, I remember finding myself amazed at how much I cared about the characters and how strongly their personalities came through - even with virtually no dialogue!! This is perhaps one of the most underrated movies in the latter half of the 20th century. Other reviewers here have already done an exceptional job of running down the highlights, so I need not do the same.

This film leaves me with 2 questions that I would love someone to answer. First, why do they not make movies like this anymore? And second, when oh when will this come out on DVD??

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes the oldies are the freshest
Tarantino wishes he could make a movie like this---exact opposite of his over-dialogued palgiarisms, this gem has almost no dialogue!

The setting shows the beasts of africa acting out a passion play for survival. The beasts are all that inhabit the landscape---the tribesmen, the "Man", and the assorted toothed mammals running about!

this flick knocked me out when i first saw it, I cannot understand why it is not on dvd yet.

For those who would say that this movie is racist, give me a break with that old tired song! All who inhabit this movie are seen as both bad and good, with no regards to color. One of the heroes is a young child, in fact, who befriends "the man".

great stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ULTIMATE IN EXOTIC ADVENTURE
A true rarity in the action/adventure genre, this film lingers in the viewer's mind long after it's over. Haunting. Satisfying. At times even moving. I am always amazed at how modern this film appears today. Though the actions of the African natives who pursue Cornel Wilde may be seen by civilized people as brutal and savage, the warriors are depicted as a people who truly believe that their motives are justified, thus no stereotypes in this film. Perhaps just as good as the other great survival adventure, JEREMIAH JOHNSON. By the way, before I forget-- the "little boy" in the film mentioned by some viewers is billed as 'Bella Randles as "the little girl'". Peace, bro. ... Read more

Kevin Bacon stars in this quickie sports film that's really more a culture-clash comedy. He plays an assistant coach at the college-basketball level who's looking for that big, big recruiting score and finds it in a distant African village. But his quarry, a seven-footer (Charles Gitona Maina) he spots in an anthropology film, turns out to be the prince of his tribe who's in line for the crown and has no interest in becoming fodder for Sports Center. So it's up to the callous American to convince him that he wants to give this all up to live in a dorm and chase coeds (while, of course, honoring his ancestors). Unfortunately, the jokes are stale and the basketball footage is nothing to get excited about. --Marshall Fine ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Hate Basketball And Love The Movie
I'm a pretty well educated film goer--took film courses in college, read much, understand the vocabulary and history of film. AND I have a secret, forbidden list--a list of films I really love but critics didn't. Such gems as Gung Ho! (with Michael Keaton) and The Golden Child (Eddie Murphy) grace this list. Out with snobbery, in with fun I say!

The Air Up There is definitely on my list. I hate basketball--I'm bored by sports in general. But I love this movie. It makes me feel good. Kevin Bacon is at his brash and cocky best as an assistant coach for a Catholic college team which apparently is expected to win big. When his personal pride costs him the loss of a promising prospect, he journeys to Africa to recruit a VERY tall fellow he saw in a home movie from a priest doing Good Works out there. When the basketball prospect turns out to be a prince and some tribal rivalry and mining interests complicate matters, the brash assistant coach has to find out what really matters.

Cliched? Sure. Predictable. I hope to tell you. But I love it anyway. The acting is amiable, the characters fun, the setting just exotic enough, the writing sure-handed, the story uplifting, and I got excited watching the basketball sequences even though I hate the game.

So what can I tell you? We talk now about not letting terrorists run our lives. I say don't let critics run your life either. I watch this movie at least twice a year and feel a whole lot happier when it's over. Try it.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING ! ! ! ! !
This has got to be one of the best movies I have watched in a long time! At some point in time, you have to get tired of all the synthetic and predictable stuff that hollywood spews and this movie is the break that hollywood needs ! The setting is spectacular, done in Kenya and I personally fell in love with Kenyan cheerleading; the maasai dances, the passion and energy of the people are all so refreshingly different ! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to watch a fantastic movie !

5-0 out of 5 stars True American is Back!
Forget "American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt," that movie will make anyone pay money for someone to get rid of it. Joe Armstrong (Michael Dudikoff) is back this time as an environmentalist preacher, also retired from the Peace Corps. Yes! Sean Davidson, now a CIA agent (David Bradley) is captured by a group of ninjas led by an ex-soldier named Mulgrew (James Booth). He wasn't pure ninja like Armstrong, silly wannabe. Mulgrew has plans for domination with a plan. Intelligence. "American Ninja 4: The Annihilation" is pure ninja. If Carl Douglas had a music video for "Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting," this movie would be it. Michael Dudikoff did deserve an Oscar for his performance (he hardly spoke and just fought ninjas). I've noticed ten year old boys have driven cars in these ninja movies. Won't those ninjas ever learn not to mess with lordage?

3-0 out of 5 stars Dudikoff & Bradley are Great...
This is not the best of the American Ninja series, but it is good. I thought the only bad part of the movie was the silly girl. Couldn't they have found someone a little less endowed and not so wimpy? Even the heroes want a woman who can watch their backs and keep up with them on the run.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amrican Ninja 4 : A Revolution in Cinema
If i was asked to sum up this movie in one word, I think I could.....SUCKY!!! As if it wasn't bad enough that some morons in black jumpsuits can take out a platoon of armed soldiers, the ninja train in garbage!!! They fall off of a balance beam into broken glass???? come on! But seriously the movie would have been much beter if the american ninja went phsyco and killed the nerdy kid and the black side kick guy. If they make another sequal the writer should be strung up. The only reason i gave it 5 stars is because it gave me my new favorite quote...ehem "This isn't a game.....THOSE WERE NINJA!!!!".

2-0 out of 5 stars Half assed attempt with shortcomings everywhere
I remember how back in 91 this was THE movie to see... Dudikoff (Joe Armstrong) was coming back and was teaming with the new guy... The previews showed clips of both American Ninjas fighting each other and you couldn't have been more excited... Unfortunately, the best fighting we see was in the beginning 30 minutes and came from a real martial artist in David Bradley (Sean Davidson)... This movie was a complete gimmick from the start with the idea of Dudikoff returning and it failed to produce... Dudikoff was underused and his "martial arts" was sub-par... The tacky groups of allies from the garbage dump with their homemade weapons were a joke... The little kid who knew everything sucked... The black side kick guy was pointless... The lead woman was a waste... The setting of South America (I think) was a dumb place for ninjas to be training... The multi racial, unisexual ninjas were a budget problem... And to top it off, NO STEVE JAMES! (Rip) What probably really hurt this flik was the fact that Joe and Sean didnt appear on screen together until the last 10 minutes of the film

2 Stars for the unusually good score put to the fighting and for the excellently choreographed Forest and Training scenes, but that's it... This movie is only for the curious who are getting bored with fast actioned kung fu fliks of today

5-0 out of 5 stars Ninja mania
Ninja's rock! this movie i rate as a 5 and a half cause its so great. The best parts are in the middle when the guy has a bottle and it barely touches the other guy and it shatters. Then its a bar fight of annihilation. Michael Dudikoff performs extroardinary and should have won an oscar for this role. It exceeds any of the Jackie chan Films or Jet Li Thank you for your time ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Comic strip travesty of classic novel
King Solomon's Mines is a great, albeit somewhat dated, classic adventure yarn and it saddens me somewhat that none of the movie versions is notably faithful to the book, adding extraneous elements in order to appeal to cinema audiences.Fair enough I suppose, given that a movie is not at all the same creature as a novel but frustrating that Rider Haggard's vision has never made it to the silver screen especially when his other undeniable masterpiece She has been twice done well in its cinematic incarnations.
This version retains only the title and very basic plot line from the book Chamberlain--an unconvincing action hero-is Allan Quartemain, hired by Sharon Stone(wooden and irritating)to locate her father who holds the key to the whereabouts of the fabled mines .Also intent on findind them are thge German Army commander in East Africa ,a shaven headed Herbert Lom ,and a Arab slaver played by John Rhys-Davies/
Cue car and bi-plane chases, pusuits through gloomy caverns and much over acting

Taken in the right spirit it is rousing enough matinee fare but everything goes ata such a lickety spit pace that it gets tiresome.Even action movies need some quiet scenes by way of contrast and everything here is so live action cartoonish that it quickily becomes tiresome.Updating the novel to the early 1900's doesn't really work either

Where is the chill that the original novel had in the character of the evil Gagool?Where are the colourful characters of the novel, like Sir Henry? Where is the dignified treatment of Africa and Africans that was a key part of the book?In short, nothing but action makes for a basically dull movie, paradoxical as that may sound

4-0 out of 5 stars King Solomon's Mines
To review this movie is to look at it from the view of a tongue-in-cheek or spoof of the original King Solomon's Mines made earlier with Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr. I don't know whether it was meant to be but if you look at it from that viewpoint I think it was hilariously funny {particularly the first half}. I had never seen Richard Chamberlain's funny side before {although I know he has a great sense of humor} and he played it very well. Sharon Stone was a little giggly but good and John Rhys-Davies always plays a wonderfull villan. The last part was a bit unreal but followed somewhat in the same humorous vein. All in all it was a fun movie to watch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comic book
All of those I see who deem this a "Indiana Jones" rip off aren't too swift! The indy films were actually rip offs of these stories which were written in the 1800's. This film is pretty good, it is VERY comic book with the acting, sets, effects and storyline. If you are a child of anything later than the 80s then you won't "get" this film. If you can't simply enjoy a film that is "family" oriented so be it. But many people enjoyed this film when it came out and still do! Its a fun romp similiar to the Indy films but with more cheeky humor. Sharon Stone takes on her early role and is quite silly and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY!
I laughed through this whole movie. I'd never seen Chamberlain and Stone in a comedy before this. I thought it would just be an adventure movie, but it's not. It's so crazy! I couldn't believe my eyes! I enjoyed it, but I can't even begin to find the words to describe this film. You've really got to see this for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars great fun

5-0 out of 5 stars swell pulp fun
I'd never heard of this movie, but it was cheap and the cover looked good so I picked up the DVD. This is such a great little movie! it should really appeal to fans of pulps, men's adventure books, and B movies. The guy playing Jake is perfect. John Hurt makes the best bad guy. I loved H.A.R.V. (Heavily Armored Raid Vehicle)!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pulp fiction brought to life on the big screen
The characters are underdeveloped and one-dimensional; the soundtrack is only a shade better than the synth-pop soup of "Day of the Dead"; the actors sound like they're reading directly off an unrevised script; and the plot is about as loose and messy as a rice krispie marshmallow treat. All these little nuances aside, "Jake Speed" has got to be, hands-down, the greatest action/adventure B-movie I've ever seen. The title character (played brilliantly by unassuming "everyman" Wayne Crawford) is a bona-fide dime novel adventurer, seeking to defeat the nefarious forces of evil with the aid of his disturbingly effete partner Des and ingenious little innovations such as "The Kid" (a super-powered automatic shotgun!) and H.A.R.V. (an armored Jeep with side-mounted machine gun turrets!). As you might expect, moral absolutism (the titanic, interminable struggle of the good heroes vs. evil villains) and cheap sensationalism abound, just as they would in any good piece of bad action-melodrama. If you're in the mood for a cute, tongue-in-cheek, low-budget iteration of early-twentieth century action serials or just one laugh after another from a ceaseless torrent of cheesy heroic one-liners, pick up your copy of "Jake Speed" today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Action Hero Movie
One of the few action hero movies I like, the story has a great twist, sound track good , picture even better, this is a movie to have fun whilre watching, not a great story but keeps you interested, if you like Remo Williams, Buckaroo Bonazi, X-men then you'll like this movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look if you like the off-beat.
Not my favorite, but up there somewhere, away from the bottom of the list. It is a cute little action-fantasy with a unique twist (the adventurers document and sell their adventures as fiction) and some interesting philosophy "if you want/need something badly enough, it will happen". One of those culty type movies where only those that "get it" enjoy it but worth the effort. Always remember: If you want to be entertained, see a movie. If you want to be enlightned, climb a mountain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "B" movie ever made.
This cute movie is a treat if you have ever read an action-adventure paperback. J.S. is a spoof of the genre but can stand on its own as an exciting adventure. It was filmed on location and has breathtaking African scenery. The film has an above average soundtrack for this type of movie. If you have a sense of humor and don't take things too seriously, you will adore this underrated gem. Good show for kids of all ages. Along with Buckaroo Banzai and Brisco County Jr., one of the most criminally neglected shows of our time. You will watch it again and again, and I can't say that about more popular movies like Indiana Jones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The funniest straight played action movie EVER!
Don't go into this film looking for some well developed charactors deep plot or anything like that. Go into it on a hunt for cliches! There are so many used in this film I would find it very difficult to beleive it wasn't on purpose. The slow motion picking up of a kid while riding a motorcycle to get him out of danger. The classic lines "I don't need a loose cannon" "Well you need something" and the obvious cuts to stunt double who are quite obviously stunt doubles. It's just so much FUN! Also look out for the texan who stumbles into cockney.

2-0 out of 5 stars One of the worse films I've ever seen....
I recently made it through King Solomon's Treasure. While this film has a great cast who can all act, none of them managed to make it through this film unscathed. The film is a story of the search by Allan Quartermain for King Solomon's Treasure, which in this version is found in a supposedly Phoenetian style city somewhere in Africa. This is only the beginning of the far-fetched nonsense that we see throughout this film.

While there were some entertaining scenes, particularly the interplay between McCallum, Colicos and McNee, they were overshadowed by the giant monsters and other bad special effects (particularly a lot of watery mud that was supposed to be lava).

I have yet to understand where all these giant monsters - including a giant crab and dinosaurs - came from in what is supposed to be an 1800's period action adventure.

While Britt Eckland and David McCallum are particularly beautiful in some scenes, I discourage you from watching this film as you will be as bitterly disappointed as I was. ... Read more

You will watch it again and again, and I can't say that about more popular movies like Indiana Jones. ... Read more
