5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Tearjerker.
I loved this film from start to finish. I just bought the DVD from Amazon and it played all the way through, no problem. I was a little worried when I ordered it because I read the other customer's reviews and had problems with the DVD being defective. I first saw this film in 1996 when I was 11 when I missed it on TV and I rented it from the video store. I liked the part where the Champ (Jon Voight) gave T.J. (Ricky Schroder) the horse and it touched my heart. The part in scene 17 where Annie (Faye Dunaway) reveals to T.J. that she is his mother is a little disturbing. There is a little foul language in it, but other than that it is a great film for the family.

When you watch this film, don't forget the Kleenex box and this is one of the films that really made me cry. I recommend this film to everyone!

10/10

5-0 out of 5 stars The one movie that still makes me cry
The Champ is an astounding motion picture directed by Franco Zeffirelli with outstanding performances by Jon Voight, Faye Dunaway and the unbelievably convincing Ricky Schroder.

The movie is the best intimate melodramatic tearjerker that I have ever seen. One view of this film will leave you with a lump in your throat and teary eyes, the next viewings will just leave you in plain tears. Yes, its that kind of movie that you'd see more than once and still feel engaged.

Jon Voight plays former boxer Billy Flynn who is down on his luck raising his son TJ, played by Schroder, alone after his wife, played by Dunaway, left him and the boy and went on to marry a millionaire after he falls out of his life of boxing, doctor's orders. The movie brings you close to the lives of all three of these characters, you feel their pain, their grief, and their emptiness. Billy has turned to drinking to escape the pain of not being able to return to boxing to support a family. TJ does not know his mother since she left him when he was still an infant, and still sees his deadbeat father as a hero, calling him 'champ'. Faye Dunaway's character can't seem to cope with the fact that her son has grown up believing she is dead and can only take him as a friend after bumping into him at a horserace, the horse that 'champ' bought him was competing in this race. The story begins to unfold when the three characters enter each other's lives again.

What's more beautiful about this movie is its musical score. The music is really another character in the film, and is quite breathtaking.

Highly Recommended

4-0 out of 5 stars I Haven't seen The Original But This Remake is Very Good
I haven't seen the original movie that starred Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper but I saw this remake starring Jon Voight and Rick Schroder and I thought it was a very good movie with great acting from Jon Voight and a young Rick Schroder (Billed as Ricky Schroder back then). It is a tearjerker filled with some sad moments but it's such a good movie and I recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars defective DVD
Movie is excellent after I bought the DVD it would just play up to scene 14 and skip to the end..they replaced it and it was the same thing.. I finally had to go rent the movie and watch it...strong performance by both actors...movie is a ***** (five star) but not on DVD

5-0 out of 5 stars The Champ
There is only one other movie of this kind that can stand up to the test of time & that is Shane with Alan Ladd. There is no way to aptly describe either other than to see both of these fine videos. Ricky (Rick) did an outstanding job as he really didn't act, he lived the part. Everyone would love to have this boy as his or her child. All of the actors made this movie what it is---GREAT! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terribly underrated
You may remember Scott Valentine as Mallory Keaton's junk-art boyfriend Nick. He was a national sensation for most of 1986-7 or so. Anyway, "My Demon Lover" was his big, breakthough movie debut, which was expected to be the first in a long line of hit movies.

Well, it didn't exactly work out. That wasn't Scott's fault, though, or the movie's. My Demon Lover was actually a very well acted, thoughtful horror/comedy -- much better than the usual late 80's fare. Highly recommended.

It is also worth watching so that you can understand the true injustice that Scott Valentine suffered. Scott truly was one of the most talented, bright, and enjoyable actors of his time. That Hollywood failed to recognize this, and failed to utilize him in a manner that best showcased his abilities, is a travesty and a crime. I began a letter writing campaign in 1988 to the major movie houses, which continued in 1989 to the independent houses, demanding that they cast Scott Valentine in their movies. Didn't they know what they were missing out on? Scott could turn a $10 million movie into a $50 million movie, easy. When I didn't get any responses, I started calling the studios every day. I even got the direct lines for Sony and Universal, and started to call them every day at 11am and 3pm (Pacific time) to remind them that Scott was available for work. Eventually they tried to get an order from the court, but it didn't work.

Anyway, by the time 1993 rolled around, I decided that my efforts were going to go unrewarded. That was when I started to petition Nickelodeon to start running Family Ties reruns. Well, it only took a few years of my calls and letters, and it's now on Nick at Night!!

I urge you all to watch Family Ties, and value every episode with Scott Valentine. He truly is a national treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
Awesome......I saw this movie when I was a kid & forgot about it. Then, I saw it on the Sci-Fi channel at 3 A.M. So I bought it. Memoirs of Family Ties.....The End!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Campy but cool...
This is your basic, 80's, campy horror movie -- so be warned. If you watch this movie, prepare to face EXTREME campy-ness. Complete with somewhat impressive special effects, entertaining scenes, a little comedy, and bad acting -- "My Demon Lover" delivers a top-knotch performance in the field of 80's, horror movie campy-ness! I'd check it out. But serious horror movie-goers beware...

1-0 out of 5 stars As a child, this movie scarred me
My mother had this habit of renting really off the wall movies when I was a kid. "My Demon Lover" crossed my path when I was a youngster, and frankly, the bizarre images have always crept back into my long term memory. I think the guy who is the lead also played Mallory Keatons boyfriend in "Family Ties" Watch this movie if you have a lot of time on your hands.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1 Star Because They Won't Allow Zero!
Please do not rent, purchase, or view this movie. It is an absolute waste of time and money. This is the worst movie ever in the history of movies. I had to see this fiasco in the theater so I feel it is my responsibility to warn everyone else. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Missed opportunity
Rarely do you get a cast this loaded with talent. I mean everyone is top-drawer. Unfortunately, they've been tossed into the bottom drawer with the dirty underwear. A meandering, inexplicable disappointment, and a bore to boot.

2-0 out of 5 stars a film all about women
Director Peter Medak's adaptation of the Leonard Michaels novel hovers midway between an all male confessional and a testosterone-soaked bull session, and perhaps it's this nebulous stance that has disappointed so many. Michaels also did the screenplay, though it is said that the visit to a brothel - The House of Affection- which comprises the second half is new. The plot centres on a group of 7 men in San Francisco, in various stages of marriage, meeting. We don't expect consciousness-raising, as we would of women, since men don't tend to be as insightful, simply the telling of stories. It's tribal, culminating in a group howling to the moon, but not barbaric in spite of the drinking and pot. We do get the de rigueur anti-gay joke but it passes relatively painlessly. Medak may include the raiding of a frig, full for a wife's next day women's club meeting, and knife throwing, but these men are still presented as reasonable and intelligent. Their hang-dog reaction to the appearance of Stockard Channing as the wife tells us that. The anecdotes we hear are free of malice, which makes the sojourn to the brothel the more interesting, since what expires is more than just about getting laid. It's more practice after the meeting's theory. The men talk of their hunger for "The Other Woman", cleverly realised by the concept of the prostitutes, whose seeming disempowerment gives way once the lovemaking is over. The climactic faux wedding scene and conclusion may be hard to read and have elements of fantasy eg the brothel being so exclusive that is has no other clients, but it also highlights the need for simple pleasures that can ease the battle of the sexes. It's unusual to see a male ensemble, and in a large group naturally some performers emerge as stronger than others, unless the material is like the film of the play That Champion Season, where the writer gives each character an aria. Here, Craig Wasson in particular is wallpaper, though he has an amusing resistance to his seductress, and Frank Langella has just as little, though he gets to look bacchanalian in Devil makeup. Treat Williams delivers a speech about a former girlfriend who gets between his food and his mouth, Richard Jordan as the houseguest is goofy bleeding from the head after Channing hits him with a frypan, and Harvey Keitel reveals a sentimental soul under a stud exterior. Keitel is responsible for the brothel wedding and is the actor most exposed as an object. It's hard to believe Roy Scheider as a great womaniser, in spite of the scene where he mounts his unconscious wife. He's more surprising when he dances to a jazz version of When the Saints Come Marching In. However the film inexplicably belongs to David Dukes, an actor who otherwise has been annoyingly mannered and lightweight. Here he is a revelation. The women make less of an impression, even with Jennifer Jason Leigh as one of the prostitutes. Ann Wedgeworth's madam carrying a doll gets a payoff, and I was actually sorry not to see more made of her anaylsis of Scheider, particularly as they circle each other near the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Westerns should be this much fun
John Water's became a cult classic guy with Polyester, and Tab Hunter and Divine the drag queen bi-sexual gay guy, are back in this take off of the Duel In The Sun classic. And this is a funny movie. Tab Hunter whom some may not remember from the 50's and 60's (but should get reacquainted with ) plays a cowboy in Chile Verde, a gritty and dusty wild western town.

If you have ever seen Divine who plays Rosie Velez you will see how this rolly polly borderline whore character can come off sofunny. Lainie Kazan plays a lusty busty saloon owner named Marguerita Ventura . Now the basics of the movie are Rosies and Marguerita's ample butts which hold part of a map to hidden treasure.

And if you can invision what the guys will do to get a look at the maps and the surprises involved with some really funny outhouse and bar room scenes then you will know why this and all of Mr Water's movies are a must own.

5-0 out of 5 stars My idea of side splitting funny material......
But that's because I happen to think you can't get much funnier than casting a very overweight white male (who thinks he's a female) as a side-saddle burro riding Mexican plus sized siren named Rosie Velez, who is on her way to the dusty desert town of Chile Verde. Miss Kazan, one of moviedoms most underrated comedic actress', shines with her usual brilliance. Definately one of my personal top ten rated comedy pictures of all time. Which means it's right up there with "Some Like it Hot" "Dinner at Eight" and "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World".

5-0 out of 5 stars "You're going to have your filthy way with me."
Divine was at the peak of his short career when he was cast as Rosie Velez in the Paul Bartel western film, "Lust in the Dust." Divine (AKA Glenn Milstead) plays Rosie Velez--a woman who waddles her way to a town named Chili Verde. With a parasol to protect her from the baking desert sun, Rosie runs into Hard Case Williams and his libidinous motley gang of outlaws. Williams--the bible-quoting, perfume-allergic, bad man isn't prepared for Rosie's zest for survival or the murderous power of those thunder thighs. So after leaving the gang members in the dust, Rosie continues on her way to Chili Verde. Rosie meets a mysterious, silent stranger, Abel Wood (Tab Hunter), and the unlikely pair travel together.

Chili Verde is more or less run by saloonkeeper, Marguerita Ventura (Lainie Kazan). Soon it is clear that both Rosie and Marguerita are vying for the attentions of Abel Wood. To this love triangle throw in buried treasure, a tattooed map showing the location of the buried treasure, the world's oldest salon girl (Big Ed), gunslingers and a couple of very raunchy songs, and you have a splendid parody of the spaghetti western. The title "Lust in the Dust" is a reference to the film "Duel in the Sun," and you'll understand why if you watch the film. All the elements of the spaghetti western are here--the silent stranger who protects the sanctity of womanhood, the hidden agenda of the mysterious stranger, and even the familiar baddie, Bernado, who wears black. The film is full of some great lines. For example, Rosie says to Marguerita, "I've been poor all my life," and Marguerita replies, "You've got it all wrong, Honey. You're not poor--you're cheap." The best lines and the best laughs are delivered by Rosie and Marguerita. The songs performed by Divine and Lainie Kazan are priceless.

For Divine fans, this film really shouldn't be missed. It's a good, crude, tasteless laugh, and that's all it's supposed to be. The film reunites Divine and Tab Hunter--they made a successful screen pair in "Polyester." "Lust in the Dust" has adult themes, and adult humour, and it's not for the kiddies--displacedhuman

3-0 out of 5 stars These Lips Were Made for Kissin
It isn't the greatest movie ever, but it has some great moments. I am buying this strictly to hear Divine's pub room song. It is th highlight of the film. Another scene you'll love is when a lover gets accidently squeezed to death between Divine's legs. And don't miss Divine riding a donkey through the desert! ... Read more

All of the actors made this movie what it is---GREAT! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The 'Norch's Saturday Night Bargain-Bin Reviews v1 #1
WINGS AIN'T EXACTLY FLYIN' HIGH HERE...

This reasonably predictable little action-thriller-mystery takes many of the cliches and hackneyed plot devices you've seen in other such flicks, and throws 'em at'cha with by-the-numbers regularity. Speakin' of 'by-the-numbers', that's just how I'm gonna format this here review...

1) Let's start with Wings Hauser ("Wings"???)-- who looks like the love child of Michael Keaton and William 'Greatest American Hero" Katt-- as Stony Cooper, a bad@$$ ex-LAPD detective. You know, another entry in a long line of Dirty Harry wanna-bes. Despite his rep as a tough guy (why d'ya think he's called 'Stony'?), our hero also has a bit of a soft side (when he's known as 'Pumice-y'). This duality is put on display at the start of the flick as he confronts and negotiates with a dynamite-laden disgruntled ex-factory worker who's got an ax to grind with his former boss.

2) Oh yes, the reason Stony's an EX-cop is because he broke a few rules too many, and was kicked off the force. This point is emphasized by the less-than-welcome reception he gets from his former fellow enforcers when he returns to L.A. to solve the big 'X-murders' case at the request of an ex-con (the reason this guy's an EX-con is-- ahhh, forget it) he befriended back in the day.

3) Then there's the ex-wife he decides to pay a visit to, and tries to win back with his charming personality. She doesn't go for it initially, but you can tell he's eventually gonna break her down and worm his way back into her heart-- not to mention the hammock she's got set up in the living room of her studio apartment. Which is the setting for the obligatory "letting-the-audience-know-we're-an-item-again" boink scene (the lady who plays the ex wife displays her best acting here). 'Course, you know this is gonna mean nothin' but trouble for wifey down the line (refer to #6 for further details)...

4) It's pretty apparent who the x-killer is when he or she is introduced in the flick. And if you don't know by then, then you should by the time it gets to the whole 'we got the guy... or DID we?' bit that takes up the final half-hour.

5) Since our hero ain't fully convinced the real murderer got waxed, he decides to do some further investigation into the matter-- and uncovers another suspect. This of course leads to...

6) ...the climactic one-on-one battle, as the prime suspect (with wifey as a hostage/human shield) trades bullets and words with Stony before the big 'blow-up' that resolves the issue.

6a) During this phase, ol' Wings gets busted up and shot a couple times, but somehow is still able to follow and stop the menace. You know, the big 'Timex' moment. Oh, how inspirational...

7) Top it all off with the big payoff featuring a humbled LAPD ex-boss (one of the guys who were part of the 'welcome wagon' in #2) trying to figure out just what happened at the scene as the closing credits roll to the tune of some cheesy quasi-inspirational 80s pop-rock tune.

8) 'Late

THIS WAS A SUPURB ACTION MOVIE IN IT'S TIME. IF YOU ARE A LOYAL HAUSER FAN LIKE I AM, THIS MOVIE IS ONE OF HIS BETTER ROLES, AND DEFINATELY KEEPS YOU WATCHING. HAUSER IS VERY YOUNG AND FULL OF ENERGY AND WHITTY ONE LINERS. AS IN MOST OF HIS MOVIES HIS LANGUAGE CAN GET HARSH AND A LITTLE DOWN AND DIRTY, FOR SENSITIVE EARS, BUT THAT'S THE WAY IT IS ON THE STREETS. THERE'S CAR CHASES AND LOT'S OF SHOT EM UP ACTION BUT IT ALSO SHOWS A MORE LOVING SIDE OF HAUSER WHICH MYSELF, I WAS PLEASED TO SEE THAT SIDE OF HIM.IT HAS A GOOD STORY LINE AND LIKE I STATED EARLIER FOR A MOVIE OF IT'S TIME IT WAS MADE WITH ENOUGH MEAT IN IT TO KEEP YOUR MAN INTERESTED, IF YOU LIKE HIM TOO SIT DOWN AND WATCH A MOVIE WITH YOU, WITHOUT FALLING ASLEEP. THIS IS A GOOD ADDITION TO MY HAUSER LIBARY AND I GIVE IT A THUMBS UP. ...

And don't miss Divine riding a donkey through the desert! ... Read more
