Middle-eastern terrorism provides the dense, perpetually timely context of The Little Drummer Girl, loyally adapted from John Le Carré's complex bestseller. It's slow going at first, taking pains to establish the tragically complicated plight of Charlie (Diane Keaton), a left-wing, pro-Palestinian actress, recruited by Israeli intelligence in 1981 to play the role of a lifetime: Once her loyalties are turned, she will lure a dominant Palestinian terrorist (Sami Frey) into a deadly trap. She's an unwitting pawn, vulnerable to romance (particularly with her Israeli recruiter, played with subtle conviction by Greek-born Yorgo Voyagis), and Keaton brings sympathetic naiveté to her character's potentially lethal dilemma. Klaus Kinski is arguably miscast as the Israeli intelligence chief, but viewers are more likely to stumble over the film's constant flow of intricate detail. The Little Drummer Girl is not always easy to follow, but attentive viewers will be rewarded, and the plot itself is, sadly, as relevant as ever. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diane Keaton plays a spy
Diane Keaton plays "The Little Drummer Girl", a young American actress recruited into a very complex plot to help catch an international Arab terrorist. The plan involves a lot of twists, backstabing, and double crosses, so you'll forgive me if I don't go into the details. Diane Keaton dose well as the vulnerable woman who is seduced into this rather complicated mission, where she is scared because she dosn't know everything that is going on or who she can trust. Keaton is strong and believable as a Palistine sympathizer. Yorgo Voyagis and Klaus Kinski as Keaton's contact and his suprerior (resectivly) also stand out with excellent performances. I really bought the love story between Keaton and Voyagis, which is rare; usually I hate the love stories in espionage thrillers, this one felt real. It is mostly subtle, only the violence at the end is brutal and bloody, but not too badly. I keep watching movies like this one or "Black Sunday" and I get chills at how close these movies are to (then) future events. Although that's where similerities end, "Little Drummer Girl" makes former West Germany it's target of terror. I liked this movie, it had the reality that James Bond dosen't, and heart that Tom Clancy is usually lacking. Good job all around.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Little Drummer Girl
I really love this movie, although I have to admit I didn't catch the entire plot until I turned on closed captioning on my TV. A lot of the words are just too garbled to understand. My one big complaint about the movie itself is the casting of Diane Keaton. This isn't a criticism of her looks since I think she's very attractive, however for the role she was playing they needed someone who was very pretty in order to be convincing. She does do a magnificent job of acting the part.

This movie is one the most romantic I have ever seen. Although there are only a few romantic areas in it, they are enough to carry the whole thing and make your your knees go weak. I became an instant Yorgo Voyagis fan after seeing this.

The plot is excellent and carries you through to the end. I recommend this movie very much.

4-0 out of 5 stars great spy movie!
forget the tacky 1980's clothes that Diane Keaton wears, forget the fact that Diane Keaton was a mite too old to be playing the Mata Hari, this is a fantastic spy movie!

A more boiled down verson of the novel by the same name (this is one of the rare example where I think the movie is better than the book) is complex and gritty; a fluid example of the race/religion quagmire that is the State of Israel. Klaus Kinski is absollutely fabulous and subtle in his role as the leader of the Israeli spy team that is trying to hunt down a mysterious bomber (remarkable performance by Sami Frey as the Palestinian bomber) and Diane Keaton, though a little too mature to be playing a somewhat nieve actresss who is recruited to pose as the bomber's brother's lover, plays through her confusion of grappling with her pro-Palestinian political affilations while at the same time working for the Israelis. The supporting cast of characters are equally complex if not extremely present in the movie which adds to the feel and scope of the spy operation that ensues.

The final hour is emotionally engaging and harrowing as is Keaton's eventual nervous breakdown after the bomber is caught. The extent of the spy operation is also grand in scope without being overbearing or, likewise, confusing.
A great movie for a cloudy day when you feel in the mood for a little intrigue!

1-0 out of 5 stars YIKES
I was surprised at how dopey this movie was -- I mean, right from the beginning. But then, it wasn't made yesterday -- it was made 20 years ago. I guess nowadays we demand a far more detailed setting for a flick involving Middle East intrigue. It felt so much like a standard issue TV episode from the early 80s that I kept expecting to see a commercial break. I swear I've seen episodes of Gilligan's Island that outperform this film in terms of suspense and plot development.

4-0 out of 5 stars The terrorism is familiar but the plot is implausible.
This 1984 film is based on the novel by John LeCarre and deals with a subject we've all become too familiar with lately: terrorism. Diane Keaton stars as a young woman who's into causes and even though she shows Palestinian sympathies, is still recruited by the Israeli Mosad to become an operative. What follows is an entirely implausible plot that required utmost concentration to follow.

Klaus Kinski played the part of the Israeli leader and even though he is a good actor, his Nordic looks made him hard to believe as an Israeli. Yorgo Voyagis, a handsome Greek actor, played the Israeli agent who gets romantically involved with Keaton. Problem is that their relationship never really sizzled and it was hard to believe she wound up putting herself in so much danger for a cause she felt so lukewarm about or for this man with whom she had few, if any, love scenes with.

I liked Keaton in her role, cast as an actress with a rather ditzy personality. The role called for her displaying her own insecurities as well as courage. She also played it in a way to make it clear that she was attracted more to the adventure and the Israeli agent than she was to the politics.

There's good cinematography and a fine sense of place. Scenes are shot in Germany, England, Greece and the Middle East. It all looks very real. There's a moderate amount of tension, especially near the end, but the story itself lacks believability and emotional intensity.

Times have changed since the film was produced, which was groundbreaking then because it showed the moral ambiguity and savage methods used by both the Israelis and Palestinians. The computers the characters used were the latest technology then too, but I had to smile the black and white monitors and dot matrix printers. Watching the film is a trip back into the past with overtones that are all too true in the present. And it's sad to note that the conflict it deals with has grown in intensity since. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Acting, Suspense filled, true life drama.......
This project is first rate. Lindsay Wagner gives an Emmy calibur performance as the unexpected heroine in tragic circumstances. The production values are also first rate. It is refreshing to see a hijack story told so vividly and with solid performances from supporting cast, this is a story you will care about. The Flight was nominated for Best TV Movie or Mini-Series, It should have won. Lindsay Wagner deserved an Emmy nomination as well. This is one to view!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of made for television films!
I think this is Lindsay Wagner's finest performance. This film, known also as "The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story", describes the first two days of the TWA hijacking from 1985. The focus is on the heroic actions of the chief flight attendant, who Wagner plays in the movie. The performances in this film, particularly by those playing the hijackers and the crew members are first-rate. While this is not a complete look at the whole hijacking, this film examines what happened while a majority of the passengers were on board before the plane was emptied in Beirut 2 days into the hijacking. This film deserves a five-star rating because of its accuracy, its quality, and the cast's performance. It's probably the best made-for-TV movie I've seen. I highly recommend this film. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars a travesty
This is perhaps the worst film ever made. It boggles the mind to ponder the fact that money, time and effort went into producing this utter monstrosity. It is worth seeing if only to help one understand the true meaning of the word "horrific." It also features the most tasteless chase scene in cinematic history. See it, abhor it, and cherish the fact that you will never again experience any film quite so abyssmal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anthony Michael Hall and a Gnome..
This film is just about the cutest thing I have ever seen. I remember seeing this years ago just loving Anthony Michael Hall's performance. If you love him now in the Sci-Fi Drama TV series The Dead Zone, or you loved him in his role as Whitey Ford in 61*, or you were blown away by his performance in Exit in Red..NOW is the time for you to see a true dramatic talent like AMH be completely GOOFY!
This man has mastered comedy just as much as drama. If you loved his jazz club scene in Weird Science ( you remember the one.."Hey Fats, man..let me tell you my story, man" ), or the scene from Sixteen Candles where he had the prom queen drunk in the backseat of the car, then you will LOVE this movie. Michael Hall just keeps getting better with age. His performance in this film is delightful! The gnome is so adorable and believe it or not the two make great costars!
Sure this movie isn't a classic like Science, the Club and Candles, but it's a great film to see Anthony Michael Hall as he makes that transition from child actor to leading man. This is that in between film where he is evolving as an actor and really coming into his craft.
Plus you can't help but love ridiculous goofy comedies like this!

" I'm sitting here handcuffed in a patty wagon about to be charged with first degree murder, Gnorm, because you had to go doom an entire race for an elf chick named Rena?! "

This movie didn't win any awards, but as corny as it may sound it will win your heart! Corny, cheesy thing to be said, I know.. but I love this film! And Gnorm is just about the cutest thing I have ever seen...next to AMH that is.. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Anthony Michael Hall
In true A.M. Hall fashion he keeps you glued to the screen in all of his antics. (Gnorm steals the screen though.) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Kill the writer!
Found only two things good about movie: 1) More lines for Michael Dudikoff=more chances to show he's a good actor (better than Jean-Claude). 2) Decent supporting cast. The writer should be shot. The only way to believe this garbage of a script is to be a 5 year old child. Too many action movie cliches. What was Ross' nemesis wearing? It looked like a wig. And yes, I'm sure everyone will believe that one man in the open can shoot all the personnel at the refinery with a few clips and an AK-47 while they shoot at him from cover and he doesn't even bother to duck (not that it matters, he doesn't get hit anyway). Bottom line: acting was great, script sucked so bad you'd have to be a moron to enjoy the movie. You can almost see the actors saying, "this script's the rough draft right?"

3-0 out of 5 stars the story could have been better.
this film shows more of Michael Dudikoff's acting ability, but that's about it. and some of the humor was okay. someone should give Dudikoff a chance at A type movies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fast-Paced Thriller
Rutger Hauer stars as Nick Randall, a former CIA man turned bounty hunter. He's a steely nerved, icy professional who rounds up the scum of society for very high prices. But now, Randall finds himself as bait in a tug of war between the CIA, FBI, and LAPD. Once the hunter, Randall has become the target of international terrorist Malak Al Rahim, played by Gene Simmons of the rock group KISS. What once was a job for Randall has become a mission; get Al Rahim at all costs!

The action in this movie is well done. Simmons does an excellent job as Al Rahim, and the pace is fast. The special effects are dazzling, and Rutger Hauer has some good one-liners along the way. If you're a fan of good action and shoot 'em up movies, then this movie should be included.

3-0 out of 5 stars All too predictable thriller
The most interesting thing to do with this film is to watch the first few minutes and then try to predict who will be left alive at the end.

I'm sorry to say that I got this right, it's so easy to predict what will happen.

The plot breaks no new ground. An Arab terrorist, Malik Al Rahim (Gene Simmons) enters the US with the intention of blowing up a Los Angeles chemical plant in revenge for the accident at Bhopal. The authorities persuade Nick Randall (Rutger Hauer) to come out of retirement to help hunt down his old nemesis. It's a kind of reversal of Blade Runner where Harison Ford is the cop dragged out of retirement to hunt down and kill Rutger Hauer.

The film deals up lots of action, it is fast paced and Rutger Hauer's sardonic wit helps to keep things moving along. Sadly, at no point does the film ever really create any sort of tension or suspense. Nor does the film really add any depth to the characters.

It's the sort of film that you will enjoy watching with a small group of friends a takeaway pizza and a six pack but the Lethal Weapon series do this kind of thing much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wanted Dead Or Alive
Like Black Sunday this is a taboo film (9/11) for today's American public. Terrorists causing havock on home soil, is not want certain people want to see at the cinema.
However this is a great low key action film for it's time, the violence is still very graphic. Rutger Hauer was great in the 1980s, before he discovered Burger King! As well as The Hitcher (which was released around the same time) he really had a presence.
The kiss frontman is a very convincing terrorist, he really looks like an arab. The CIA subplot makes this even more watchable. But anyone who has seen this film will remember the ending! Check it out, miles ahead of Collateral Damage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hat's off to Gene "the Demon"!
This film and "Runaway" are two good examples of Gene Simmons's acting ability. It shows that 'ol Gene is capable of other things than sticking out his tongue. If and whenver KISS does end its music career, Gene could make it as an actor, he's already proved that! I'm proud to own it on dvd. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars What about the bonus Rutger?
Bounty hunter Nick Randall (Rutger) is alleged great-grand son of famous TV bounty hunter Josh Randall (played successfully
by Steve McQueen back in the 50's). Rutger may not be a
psycho (The Hitcher-'86), a space con (Blade runner-'82) or
a blind white Samurai (Blind Fury-'90) but no problemo!
Gene (I was the masked bass player of KISS) Simmons takes
over. After the absurd hermaphrodite creature he featured in a John Stamos movie (Never too young to die-'86), this is
trully brilliant casting (though not very politically correct,
I mean him being a Jew and meanwhile portaying an Arab
terrorist in this movie). If you're a fan of action movies you have already seen this one. If you're not, hey, let me tell
you this: The end scene with the grenade stuffed in Gene's
mouth is one of World Cinema's all time classic scenes and it
makes this movie a must-see just to hear Rutger say his
famous BONUS line.....! ... Read more

If you're not, hey, let me tell
you this: The end scene with the grenade stuffed in Gene's
mouth is one of World Cinema's all time classic scenes and it
makes this movie a must-see just to hear Rutger say his
famous BONUS line.....! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More Action From Isaac Florentine
The director that brought us 'U.S. Seals 2' is back with another low-budget, high-octane action thriller. In what may be a nod to those who objected to the over-the-top unrealistic tone of "U.S.Seals 2', this one is a bit more realistic. The plot is less outrageous, the villains more like people you read about in the papers, and the combat action looks a little less Hong Kong extreme and a little more like real military take-downs.
But 'Special Forces' is still a Heroic Bloodshed flick through and through. The action is almost non-stop and choreographed with flair and skill. For a low budget movie there's a remarkable amount of stop-the-DVD-and -watch-it-again moments. And the climactic battle has one of the best martial arts showdowns I've seen in years. If you like wild action, you'll get a kick out of this.
The more realistic tone will probably please some, but I'd just as soon see the director cut loose. I bet he would make a drop-dead cool sword & sorcery fantasy flick. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time it took...
This movie is, without a doubt, THE worst movie I have ever seen! It actually gets "O" stars for my rating. For many years, that title belonged to "Red Dawn" hands-down but this has, unfortunately, topped it. The acting is SO bad that it is offensive (did they actually get paid?!). Half the time the actors who were supposed to have 'middle-eastern accents' would forget that little fact and start speaking without one - in mid-sentence. The plot of the movie is that a plane (a very small one - yet it had an elevator - yes, an elevator!) is hijacked (by how many terrorists? - who knows - it seemed you could never get a confirmed number) and on board there turns out to be an air marshal to save the day. Appropriately, and soon enough, we got to see this "super-man" type character bare-chested, karate-chopping and "hi-yah!"-ing his way all over this rather small aircraft, most of the time without the knowledge of the other terrorists. And, as always, they have to stick in a little kid that is wise beyond his years and can figure out things adults cannot (it didn't even phase a flight attendant that at one point the child was in control of flying the aircraft). Eli Danker, the 'head' terrorist, gives his usual performance but I wished he could not be associated with this film at all. As a matter of fact, my strong suggestion is that all of the people associated with this film in any way, shape or form NEVER go near any type of camera equipment, film studio or even a movie theater ever again! Bottom line - whether you spend money to rent this movie or you see it for free you'll be sorry! ...

I highly recommend this film. ...
