Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino play ditzy best friends who decide to attend their 10-year high school reunion, but they completely make over their styles and identities first in order to impress the people who tormented them. The two stars keep the film going despite various lapses and potholes in David Mirkin's direction and despite a sneaking sense that the idea can't sustain the length of an entire feature. A midsection dream sequence underscores the latter problem through blatant padding, but Sorvino and Kudrow--both of whom became established stars playing airheads on other projects--are worth the weaknesses. --Tom Keogh ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "I'm the Mary, and you're the Rhoda!"
In 1997, David Mirkin, in his big-screen directorial debut, directed the light-hearted comedy "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion", which was written originally as the play "The Ladies Room" by Robin Schiff (who was also one of the film's executive producers). The story is about two ditzy blondes in their late 20's, Romy White (Mira Sorvino) and Michele Weinberger (Lisa Kudrow), who live together in Southern California and decide to attend their ten-year high school reunion in Tucson, Arizona. Having little cash, the two manage to borrow a car to drive to Tucson, but become concerned about making a big impression on their former high school classmates. They invent a story about them being businesswomen and inventors and reminisce about their high school days. Throughout high school, Romy was infatuated with football star Billy Christianson (Vincent Ventresca), but he was dating the conceited Christy Masters (Julia Campbell). Christy's friends included Cheryl (Mia Cottet), Kelly (Kristin Bauer) and Lisa Luder (Elaine Hendrix), who were otherwise known collectively as the "A-Group". A nerdy guy named Sandy Frank (Alan Cumming) was infatuated with the then-back-brace-wearing Michelle, who wasn't particularly interested in him. Then there were the other assorted high school personalities including the fast-talking & insensitive Heather Mooney (Janeane Garofalo), the maudlin Toby Walters (Camryn Manheim) and the shy nameless cowboy (Justin Theroux).

Though the plot and dialog are simple, the combination of the wonderful acting by Lisa Kudrow, Mira Sorvino, Janeane Garofalo and Julia Campbell, as well as the film's fantastic soundtrack, make "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" a very entertaining comedy. Songs in the film's mostly 1980's soundtrack include, but are not limited to, "Just A Girl" (by "No Doubt"), "Y.M.C.A." (by "Village People"), "She Blinded Me With Science" (by Thomas Dolby), "Addicted To Love" (by Robert Palmer), "Whip It" (by "Devo), "Time After Time" (by Cindy Lauper), "Footloose" (by Kenny Loggins) and "Venus" (by Bananarama). Memorable scenes include reminiscing about high school, Michelle at the thrift store, Romy with Ramon (Jacob Vargas), Romy & Michelle driving, the dream, reunion confrontations, the dance, leaving the reunion and the closing scenes. Overall, I rate the light-hearted comedy "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" with 4 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone that grew up in the 1980's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun movie with a great soundtrack!
Okay, it doesn't matter that I've seen this movie at least 36 times, I never get tired of plugging it.

Romy and Michele are invited to their 10-year High School Reunion. But when they start filling out their questionnaire ("They want to know what we've been doing for the past ten years.") they realize their lives aren't all that glamorous after all. So they devise a little scheme, making up a story involving the invention (and design!) of Post-It Notes. Thus spawns the great debate: Who's the Mary and who's the Rhoda.

Of course nothing goes according to plan, and the two decide to part ways once they arrive at their reunion back at Sagebrush High in Tucson, Arizona ("This town is, like, so unhip!" "Oh, I know!")

Despite the lengthy dream sequence in the middle of the movie, it made me wonder which group I belonged to in High School. Definitely not the A group. Lisa Kudrow was made to play Michele, the half-wit blonde with a heart of gold. Mira Sorvino was just as convincing as her best friend forever, Romy. The two could only be upstaged by the inimitable Janeane Garofalo. Throw in the perky Toby Walters (played to a "T" by Camryn Manheim) and Alan Cumming as the "pocket-protector" geek who constantly lusts after Michele and you have one cute story.

Of course, no matter how much I like this film, the cheesy dance sequence towards the end always makes me cringe. But it's still cute nevertheless. When I want to reminisce of my own 80's high school days, I'll pop in this video and wax nostalgic.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I hope your babies all look like monkeys..."
AWESOME CHICK FLICK!!!! I LOVE this movie! It's about two best friends who go to their high school reunion to try to impress all their old classmates. They reunite with old flames, old crushes, and old allies. I love the part when they have a "tounge-lashing" with the ex cheerleaders. The dancing scene was weird, but funny. And the movie started with the most perfect song to get you in the mood for the flick: NO DOUBT's 'Just a Girl'. The movie has clever and witty jokes, and is filled with 80's music. Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe on 'FRIENDS') is awesome and really ditsy, Mira Sorvino ('Replacement Killers') is also very fresh and clever! This is anwesom movie for anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Female Friendship
This movie does something very rare for Hollywood - it values a great friendship above Finding a Man. It also offers psychedelic dance-floor outfits, a goofy touch of magical-realism, and the chance to triumph over your old high school enemies. What more could you want? Trashy fun with a heart of gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars UHUH? YEAH? WASSUP?
Wassup this movie is master genious of the comedy. How can a movie reminisce the 80's without getting to much into cliches, well watch "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" and u will find out how, this movie has it all, fun, great comedy, great jokes, and superb actings by Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, a classic and a guilty pleasure. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Stephen King Movie stays true to the Novel
This movie is a great adaptation of stephen kings Rose Red. It's sort of like the haunting but with an physic twist. a dormat house haunted house with a really shady past is under investagation by a profesesor and her volunteer physics. But whatthey don't know is with their physic enegry they have waken up the spirit sin the house. one by one they disappear till the real horror is the house is changing. It's alive.
This movie is a superb adaptation I loved how they told the history of the house and the people before they went into the house. this is a wonderful movie more errie than scary but still this is must see for any stephen king fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth watching again and again.
Rose Red is one of those movies that stays with you long after it's over. Don't let the length of the movie (almost 6 hrs.) turn you off to watching it. It's well worth the time to sit down and watch this brilliant masterpiece. The cast was wonderfully chosen. From Nancy Travis who plays Dr.Joyce Reardon. The woman who becomes fasinated with a haunted mansion called Rose Red to the point of risking other peoples lives to prove to her boss and collegues that Rose Red truly is haunted. To Annie Wheaton played by Kimberly J. Brown who has the power to waken Rose Red from a deep sleep by using her mind to do. If your a Stephen King fan than you won't want to miss this, and for the rest of you who aren't, well give the movie a try anyway. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great supernatural movie
Rose Red is a complex film but if you pay attention, it can be followed easily.
The setting is an awesome old house. But there are ghosts that still live there. As the plot unravels, the characters special supernatural abilities bring out the answers to what the group is looking for. Scary scenes, bizzare happenings as the house "lives." One of King's best films.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you know Stephen King you know this is one of his best
Well, I read my first Stephen King novel when I was 12 years old. I read Salem's Lot and slept with the light on for weeks. Since then I have read everything he wrote as Stephen and as Richard. I watch all of the tidbits, articles, commentaries etc on him. His imagination is amazing. I only became disappointed when filmmakers began botching his books with very bad movie adaptions. There are very few Stephen King novels which have been able to transcend from his wonderful imagination in print to that same imagination re-enacted through the actor/ess. Misery,Green Mile, Needful Things and Rose Red were a select few that made it. Carrie, Firestarter, The Shining(despite a stellar performance from Jack Nicholson), Salem's Lot, The Stand, Dead Zone(again despite a stellar performance from Christopher Walken)and Storm of the Century did not. If you thought the movie was bad, look to your actors and directors, not to Stephen King. There is no doubt that the book was good. It is very hard to capture an imagination that spectacular on film, but occasionally it can be done. It is now many many years later from the year I read Salem's Lot and I can still hear in my mind the line I read from that book about the high, sweet, evil sucking sounds of a child - Danny Glick. Try to capture that on film!

3-0 out of 5 stars an ok TV movie brought to life
it was boring for some of the time but then theres some good scenes and some jolts. basically a true story and the place is real and I want to visit it. Julian Sands dies in this one, why, he was the cool person and so was Matt Keeslar, but why Sands DAMN IT. Stephen King has a cameo, just like some of his other books brought to life in a movie. basically soe corny effects and cheap dialouge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Despite what the other critics say...
I'd call this one of the better Young Indy films. It's fun, it's interesting, and it was neat to see Indy do some wild stunts again. Certain scenes were very reminiscent of the car chases in Raiders. It's always nice when Young Indy acts a lot more like grown Indy. I for one did not like the female lead, her attitude towards men mainly. I thought she was way too silly for Indy to be so stuck on her for so long. Her insistance on not committing to a relationship was really annoying. Hey, I've known girls like that. I have to admit that I understood Indy's feelings. Sometimes it's hard to break it off with a girl that hot, even if she mistreats the heck out of you. Still, she really ticked me off. Anyway, the movie itself is a nice change from the seriousness of most of the others, and frankly, I thought it was pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably reflects Lucas's dislike to big studios
Yep, although he doesn't mention it, it shows clearly his bad memories of his youthful filmmaking; like the other chapters I've reviewed, this one also is very inmersive and shows how dangerous was to shoot a film at that time (well it's still so, but not THAT dangerous), yes I do agree with other reviewers about that it doesn't has lot of action, but it still has many comic situations that are worth to see, and it is at the height of the other chapters.

3-0 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones and the Hollywood Budget
This film, while all about budget, seems to suffer from just that. Don't get me wrong, it's a great addition to the wonderful Young Indy series, and the heroine, Claire, is captivating, but the plot is all over the map and it has virtually no action. For a better Indy episode that doesn't rely on action, check out Mystery of the Blues... it's brilliant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lucas' "Follies" saved by Flanery's Indy
As with all the adventures in this series, there are two criteria for review. One is how well Indiana Jones is characterized and the other is how well the history-lesson-of-the-week is portrayed. Throughout the majority of the series, at least the history bit is dramatized so well that we can forgive liberties taken with Indy's character.

Here, though, the liberties taken are so great that, although there are some fascinating character development moments, the weakness of plot premise prevents us from getting lost in the story. It is simply too fantastic a leap of faith to believe that Indiana Jones would somehow get involved with Hollywood's nascent film industry. Worse, even if one could forgive Indy's presence in Hollywood, the historical figures he meets are far too conveniently placed in the plot for us to revel in their discovery. On the other hand, the Indy on display here is very much Indiana Jones. There is a level of resourcefulness and cunning which sometimes makes us think we're watching Ford, not Flanery.

At once this film suffers from the series' worst quality (implausibly putting Indy at George Lucas' historical mercy) and benefits from its best (giving Flanery some moments to show us the glint in Harrison Ford's eye).

Thus, though the premise of the story is deeply flawed, we do care about the relationships Indy forges here. The entire first hour is very much foreshadowing for his relationship with Belloch (and other rogue archaeologists) from the theatrical film series. Likewise, the untenable romantic relationship lays the groundwork for the Professor Jones we see in "Raiders": a man who would probably like to commit to a woman, but who can't quite seem to get there because the kind of woman he likes has a very full plate herself.

Overall then, the film lives up to its full title. It is very much about both "Hollywood Follies" and "Young Indiana Jones". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars caught off guard
OK. So, I stumbled upon this movie, chosen by a friend, and not expecting it to actually be good, was totally caught off guard. This is actually, in my opinion, not only completely clever in the humor, but some of William H. Macy's best comedic work, on par with "Fargo". While I could analyze the appropriateness of the genre and all that jazz, and I am just going to suffice it to say that it is an entertaining movie with humor right up the alley of those seeking humor slightly off the beaten path. As is necessary for a good film, it boasts a completely talented cast, and I was impressed no only by William Macy's performance, but also by Adam Arkin,a completely overlooked and incredibly talented actor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Slight
I found this movie to be cute and funny in some places, and strangely repellent in others. The overall premise was good, and there were lots of great scenes like the bank robbery, and appealing characters like the detective with a screenplay (Adam Arkin) and the protagonists sassy girlfriend Kit (Felicity Huffman) but as the story continued, the main character became less and less likable, and the so called villains more likable. Nor was this just some ploy to show that we're all human underneath or something, because the tone of the film was still flippant and disturbing. The screenplay was unbalanced. In its attempt to give us a flawed anti-hero like all good film noirs, it created a bit of a monster.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great movie!
Like some of the best movies I have seen, I caught this one by accident. I am not going to go into some long winded review about "film noir" blah, blah, blah. I recommend this movie to anybody that has not seen it. If you like movies like "Three O'Clock High", "Red Rock West", "After Hours" or if you liked "Fargo"...check this one out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another 'comedy' neo-noir.
It is probably the reductio ad absurdum of the self-conscious neo-noir that its ultimate hero/villain/victim should be a film critic, about as far removed from the original prole/lower-middle-class noir heroes (e.g. 'The Postman Always Rings Twice', 'Double Indemnity') as you could get. Faced with a crisis (he accidentally murders his lover), Terry Thorpe turns it into a screenplay, a fiction - if he plays by the film noir rules, he can worm his way out of it. And this is what saves the film from smart-alecky ghastliness - it is a film about mid-life crisis, the flaws and difficulties of the modern, affluent, middle-aged man. It seems like noir can still speak for people rather than to itself, but this often palls. the best joke is a corpse called Laura who doesn't get up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT movie no one knows about !! GET IT !!
"Opportunity Knocks" is a cute, funny movie. I have this movie and without a doubt, it's one of my favorites. It is Dana Carvey's first "starring" role as something other than a Saturday Night Live character and he is excellent. This movie never got the accolades it deserved (perhaps not enough press coverage). This movie is MILES above "Clean Slate" (Dana's second movie). I have felt for years that this movie was a wonderful little secret that only I and a few others in the world knew about. Dana really shines here. If you like Dana Carvey...if you like really funny, sweet little movies...if you have a sense of humor and like a good laugh - buy this movie, PLEASE. I want to share it with you !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, bad actress!
This movie is one of Carvey's best! He's very charming and as always funny. You can't help but start to love his charecter. It was an excelent movie, and I would give it a full 5, if it wasn't for Eddie's (Carvey) love intrest. I don't know if the charecter was played out perfectly, and it wasn't that interesting. Or the actress, Julia Campbell, didn't give it her best. She seemed very boring, and in many ways wrong for the part, and the guy. Other than that, this is an excelent film!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Carvey Review
A great movie, one of my favorites! Carvey does excellent acting and the karaoke scene is pure gold! Dana Carvey should consider acting again.

Dana Carvey plays a small time conman named eddie whos about to hit the big leagues. He breaks into a house and is mistaken for the housesitter. That's when the movie takes off. He has to play it cool to keep his cover and not let the girl he loves know he is a fraud. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars horrid
this movie is horrid--i wonder if the acting was supposed to be this bad on purpose. and the message--that "success" somehow makes you white--the charicatures may have been there to make a point, and yeah it's playing like a period piece (early 90's) -- but why did baby bam (jungle brothers) have to be in this? as the narrator, "sidekick", he was the best thing about the flick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent...
I thought this was a pretty cool movie for the time period it came out in. It even had a message in it, which is : never forget who you are, where you have come from and gone through when you reach the success you set out to reach in life.

1-0 out of 5 stars it's garbage
This movie is apparently a comedy that turns out not to be funny when it tries to be and when it doesn't. I'm trying to think of one redeeming quality this movie contains, but there is none. Don't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh, but no . . .
Don't waste your time with this one. It could have been a good movie, but the script got in the way. The only good thing about this flick is future "Living Single" star T.C. Carson (whom, you'll notice, NEVER mentions this movie). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Poor Man's Psychological Thriller ...
Sad to see such wasted talent as Arnold Vosloo (who is horribly miscast as a far too attractive and far from menacing serial killer) in this unfortunate excuse for a psychological thriller. If, like me, you have recently become a fan of this sexy and darkly intense actor since this summer's mega-hit "The Mummy", you will be pleased at the amount of screen time and dialogue he has but sorely disappointed if you are a fan of the psychological thriller genre. Gary Busey seems to sleepwalk through the movie when any other journalist would likely be traumatized at being stalked by a serial killer. More interviews with the killer would have provided more insight into this character. Lots of potential for an interesting study of the mind of a killer, but somebody missed the boat on that one. In short, if you're a Vosloo fan, give it a look but if you're a psychological thriller movie fan, give it a definite pass!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
I kept getting the feeling that there was too much cut from this movie. I'd love to see an uncut version... of course, maybe it's just wishful thinking.. you know, that some of the holes in the movie would be filled in. Still, overall it's a good movie, if you can get past the little things (can't think of any examples right now, but just little things that they don't bother to explain).

1-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE TRIPE!
A saturday night walk to our local video store was about to change my girlfriend and my own life forever. Whilst browsing the shelves at the store we noticed 'Diary of a serial killer' staring screen legend mr gary busey. Once we arrived home we popped the dvd in the machine and off we went. Well, were do i start. This is without doubt the most badly acted and appalling movie ever made. Please find listed our reasons for hating this film:- 1) GARY BUSEY....his wooden acting is hilarious, check out some of his reactions when facing a deadly serial killer, like he has just met his granny for tea. He shows no real emotion when find dead bodies....his TEETH....his awful cheesy grins......his chunky brown cords 2) THE MISTAKES.....plastic bottle........putting in a stunt double for busey, with the most ridiculous wig on, check out when busey is knocked down by vosloo at the end....its not him lying there. 3) THE EXTRAS 4) THE DIALOGUE...for example 'i'm hungry, i'd like a hot dog'

THIS IS THE WORST FILM EVER MADE AND WE HAVE WATCHED IT 30 TIMES OR MORE IN 3 MONTHS......BUSEY< YOU ARE SO RUBBISH< YOU KEN BARLOW LOOKALIKE

4-0 out of 5 stars Madness Explored
Like so many others, I too have become a recent Vosloo watcher and bought the DVD of this film for that reason. This is not a film I would have purchased ordinarily, nor would I have attended it in a theater. (I spend too much of my time keeping others alive to relish watching someone else trash viable young adults in the full bloom of youth and life). Still, one can hardly but appreciate the talent that went into bringing Stephan to reality on the screen. I have met two psychopathic personalities, one professionally while I was working on a neurology ward and one in private life while I was living in Egypt. In both instances in retrospect, I am especially amazed at the skill they exhibited in enlisting the cooperation of their victims--myself among others--in their enterprises. One not only believed in what they said and did, one actually WANTED to believe in what they said and did. Nor if I were to have a third encounter with such an individual could I honestly say I would be any the less vulnerable for the experience. Mr. Vosloo's characterization of Stephan is, therefore, not only creditable it is positively chilling. (One wonders how he went about preparing for the role.) His ability to show up virtually everywhere without warning was also effective (though not unpredictable given the genre). The only film I've seen wherein the character--in this case a female--was more effectively menacing, merciless, and everywhere is an Egyptian film in Arabic, entitled Shamps. Mr. Busey's character was also believable in that he entered a web of terror of his own volition (and probably arrogance) with Mr. Vosloo's very dangerous spider waiting for him in the middle of it. His ineffectual efforts to escape it and his ultimate involvement of others in the terror is also creditable. My only criticism of the film is that the story behind the title character's madness was neglected, religated to the experience of a disillusioned teenager--though recent events have proved graphically how violent and tragic that can become--this was, after all, the diary of a serial killer, and I would have liked to have known more about the making of such a madman. Over all, though I cannot honestly say I "liked" the film, I still thought it was a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vosloo fan reviews Diary of a serial killer
This is a movie about a reporter (Busey) who unknowingly witnesses a serial killer at work. The killer (Vosloo) finds out that someone just saw what he did, he confronts Busey and finds out that he's a reporter. Busey saves himself by offering to do a story on Stefan (Vosloo) and in turn gets in over his head. I believe this is one of Vosloo's best films. He is believable and captivating in this role. This film is why I became a Vosloo fan in the first place. Highly reccomended for adlut audiences. ... Read more

Please Studios, release Rose red on VHS,I dont own a DVD player but need this wonderfully creepy film in my collection! PLEASE!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome movie and book!!!!!!
I loved Rose Red!! There is just something about it. I would highly recommend reading the diary before watching the movie. I did the opposite, however, both stories are excellent on their own. It does not matter how many times you watch Rose Red, it still remains creepy and scary!! If you love the movie, read the book!! It is amazing. I am sadly, almost done with the book. I may reread parts of it again, cause I loved it so much!! I carry the book with me everywhere I go. I loved the house, it is amazing. I would love to go the Thornewood castle and the Winchester mansion. I loved Kimberely Brown, and Julian Sands. I hope this movie, comes out on vhs pretty soon!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Four Fingers anyone?
At first when I first seen Rose Red I thought it would be some ... old Mini series like Storm of the Century, but I was wrong. The Movie was great. My favorite charactor ( tell you the truth) was actuly Emmery. He 's misunderstood but people can relate him. But later on his fingers get cut of because Annie was possed for a second and slammed the door shut when he had his fingers in the door. I recomend you see this movie it was greaT!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to the usual standards.
Rose Red (Craig Baxley, 2001)

Craig Baxley, who did such a wonderful job with the adaptation of Stephen King's Storm of the Century (and recently completed an adaptation of one of my favorite woefully underappreciated books, Brooks Stanwood's chilling The Glow), took on another written-for-the-small-screen King miniseries and came up with an opposite effect. In all the places where Storm was great, Rose Red stumbles.

The plot surrounds a haunted house in Seattle (can we all say The Winchester Mansion, folks?) and a professor of child psychology, Joyce Reardon (Nancy Travis, of So I Married an Axe Murderer fame), who believes that the key to getting hard evidence of the paranormal phenomena in the house lies in a sixteen year old autistic girl named Annie (Kimberley Brown, of various Nickelodeon movies and A Bug's Life). She also invites Annie's sister Lauren (Melanie Lynskey, most famous as Kate Winslet's foil in Heavenly Creatures) and a plethora of other psychics along for the Memorial Day Weekend ride.

The main problem witbh Rose Red is that, despite a cast that redefines "high-powered" where TV miniseries are concerned, the whole thing is painfully overacted. Of the entire cast, only Julian Sands (as psychic Nick Hardaway) and Lynskey deliver performances that would seem out of place on a daytime soap opera. Storm of the Century gave us a cast of then-relatively-unknowns who played their parts with chilling minimalism. The comparison is painful.

Worth seeing if you're a King completist, but Storm of the Century or the video release of The Stand (six hours on tape, eight on TV) is a much better way to spend a long King-soaked afternoon. ** 1/2 ...

Highly reccomended for adlut audiences. ...

It seems like noir can still speak for people rather than to itself, but this often palls. the best joke is a corpse called Laura who doesn't get up. ...

Carson (whom, you'll notice, NEVER mentions this movie). ... Read more
