All the confusion, pain, despair, and even hope of the men and women who served in Vietnam is captured in Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam. Read by dozens of actors such as Harvey Keitel, Matt Dillon, and Kathleen Turner, these letters show a more human story of the war than we see in most media outlets and reveal real people in real situations trying to explain or understand. The footage, some newsreel, some shot by the servicemen and servicewomen, reveals a tension between the soldiers' actual experiences and the presentation their loved ones received from television. The soundtrack weaves the songs of the 1960s with the readings to create a compelling aural snapshot of the time, which complements the video exceptionally well. While it's not a "feel-good" movie, the viewer does get a sense of the indestructibility of human dreams. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grabs you by the heart and mind and doesn't let go.
I originally saw this film on HBO, and, like another reviewer, recorded it for repeat viewing. My copy has long been unplayable, as I have watched and shown it over and over. I'm thrilled to see it's available here. I think it's the most powerful film I've ever seen - documentary, "indie" or commercial. The work that went into making this film by the Vietnam Veterans' Theatre Group is amazing. They reviewed and edited literally miles and miles of news footage, gathered letters home from families and friends, and in some cases were even able to link up the letter with film of the soldier who wrote it. The eloquence of the young soldiers and nurses will break your heart, and the increasingly haunted look in their eyes as the war wears on will stay with you for a long time. Couldn't I give it 10 stars???

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Movie with Awesome Footage and Quotes!
This video is a wonderful one. It successfully displays how the Vietnam War was when it was. The music and the footage and the letters all pulled together made this a non-boring, yet exciting informational movie! My favorite part of the movie was all the great quotes. A friend and I pick up funny quotes and like to use them just for fun. This movie had a TON of excellent and short catchy quotes that made the movie entertaining. One of my favorites is "Home is where you DIG it", it's kind of funny, yet kind of saddening, depending on how you look at it. I got so much from this movie. It shows the good times and bad times during the war. It was funny, and moving, and almost tear-jerking. I was glad that I watched it. And everything about the movie is real, so it's great to use for school papers or just to watch. I learned a lot about the Vietnam War from this movie and even would like to see it a couple more times :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Fact is Better than Fiction
I watched this movie yesterday in my AP American History class and the entire room was silent throughout the whole production, unusual for a group of teenagers during the last few days of school.

I have seen other Vietnam movies (Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now,) but none rivals this one. It's just a hauntingly beautiful film.

I could easily give this movie five stars based solely on a single scene in which "Useful Phrases in Vietnam" comes up on the screen amidst a swarm of helicopter gunships. The shot transitions inside a "Huey," we're told, on a "Search..." and "Destroy" mission. Looking just over the door gunner's shoulder, Mick Jagger and the Stones start going away on "Gimme Shelter," the flighty chords pairing perfectly with the erratic, panicked movement of the choppers. As Jagger goes into the second verse, Bill Couturie cuts to a video of soldiers conducting a "Zippo Raid." The result is nothing short of cinema art, every bit as psychologically evocative as the famed opening scene of Apocalypse Now, and that story was made up.

See this movie. It applies now more than ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Track
This was one of the best and realistic war movies I have ever seen. I was speechless as I watched in Histroy Class.

Does anyone no the sound tracks that were used in the movie, or to be more specific, the one at the start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Painful, Sad, Beautiful
This is perhaps the greatest movie ever made about the Vietnam War, and probably one of the greatest ever made about *any* war. I am disappointed that there seems to be no DVD version, a deficiency that I hope will be corrected soon.

I first saw this film when it first aired on HBO, and I taped it then. That was a long time ago. I don't know where that tape is anymore.

I was part of the generation depicted in this film. I did not go to Vietnam. In the draft lottery back in the day, my birthday was picked way down the list. That made my mom very happy. It left me with mixed emotions. I didn't support the war back then, but I would have gone if drafted. In some ways I feel guilty that I never went. And in some ways I am grateful.

Watching this movie will make most viewers, of whatever age, grateful that they did not have to experience any of that. I would not want my children to experience such horror. We can play "what if" as much as we want - what if we had sent more troops, what if we had not held back. None of that matters now.

This movie shows the tragedy of that war, that era, to full effect. It teaches lessons that folks in positions of authority seem unwilling or unable to learn.

It is embarrassing to note that the majority of "chicken hawks" among the policy makers in the US government right now are of my generation - the generation depicted in this film. It's enough to make one despair.... ... Read more

When a recent widower (the wonderfully overemphatic George C. Scott ) moves into an antique Washington mansion, his realization that he may not be the only resident leads him toward a deadly secret that refuses to remain buried....The best haunted-house film since the legendary Haunting, this potent, classy combination of the mystery and horror genres eschews explicit gore and dumb shocks in exchange for a subtle creepiness that occasionally builds to a terrifying peak (watch out for that seance scene!). The result is a satisfyingly intelligent horror film with an intriguing dash of Watergate-era paranoia. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Changeling (1979)
Director: Peter Medak
Cast: George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, Melvyn Douglas, Jean Marsh, Barry Morse.
Running Time: 109 minutes.
Rated R for violence and some language.

At a time when the horror genre was shifting away from the suspenseful notions of such classics as "Psycho", "Rosemary's Baby", and "Halloween", this film is a pleasant surprise of a horror-thriller due to its firm, gripping script, excellent musical and orchestrating score, and fine performances from the entire cast. Medak presents George C. Scott's character as a rigid puzzle piece searching for the rest of the connection as a lonely, old composer who thrives on seclusion. Attempting to get on with his life after his wife and child are tragically killed, the music lover buys a new home and looks forward to the new chapter of his life; however, an evil presence lurks in the halls.

As the horror of "The Changeling" proceeds, Scott's character is transformed into a soul searching for the reasons for his failures and short-comings, all the while trying to survive in a haunted estate. A truly ghoulishly fun film that gladly mimmicks the work of previous classic films of the genre, in turn producing a very enjoyable thriller that deserves much more respect than it has received. One of the better supernatural thrillers of the late 1970s.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Haunted and Haunting movies ever...
George C Scott suffers the tragic loss of his wife and young daughter and moves to Seattle to teach music and compose. He rents an enormous old house, (the house is so vast, it is hard to imagine one person living in it, or spending one night in it alone)which turns out to come with a ghostly presence. The overall mood and tone of the movie is very dark and sad, I was very moved when the real story behind the haunting came out. There is nothing, in my opinion, more horrific or incomprehensible than murdering a child, for any reason, but this was beyond my worst imaginings. There are many unforgettable images from the movie, most notably, the wheelchair, the ball and the child's voice on the tape recorder, but what I had a hard time getting out of my mind was the music box theme. This is apparently based on a true story, and one can only hope that the real child did not suffer the same fate in the afterworld that this poor little boy did. At times my sorrow and my fear were at odds with each other; suffice to say this is one of the finer, more eloquent, and more haunting of the genre that I have ever seen...

5-0 out of 5 stars Steal from the best they say...
I’ve owned The Changeling for many years first VHS then DVD. When movies like ‘the Ring”, “What lies beneath” and “the Others” came along I noticed something similar to my favorite old ghost story. Michelle Pfeiffer’s character (Beneath) has her first marriage come to a tragic end by a car accident and looses her children. So does George C. Scott in “The Changeling”. She’s a musician (Ditto). Watch the scene in the bathroom and then watch where they got the idea from in “The Changeling”. The neckless in the story is exact as well. Finding the neckless at the bottom of the lake (Beneath) or finding it at the bottom of a well (Changeling)... “The Ring” nabbed some ideas as well (no pun). The tortured child held captive in some upstairs attic is right from “The Changeling”. Finding the body in the well is right from “The Changeling”. The most similar scene I’ve found out of all is the scene from “The Others”. The seance is taking place and the blind women is writing on paper what she is hearing from the ghost in the house. The assistant takes each piece she finishes writing and reads out loud what the psychic has written. Exact same scene in “The Changeling”. The whole Haunted house murder mystery revenge thing is my favorite type of movie. I just kept thinking, watching these “newer” movies, I think I’ve seen this before.

5-0 out of 5 stars FOLLOW THE BOUNCING BALL
This movie is truly a frightening ghost story. Director Peter Medak wisely chose to downplay any gore, instead giving us a series of terrifying sequences, revolving around a bouncing ball, a music box, a child's wheelchair, and a mesmerizing seance. George C. Scott and Trish van Devere play their parts well, with some excellent support from Melvyn Douglas and John Colicos (who in one brief scene signifies true evil). All the elements of good film-making come together in this well-filmed and orchestrated movie. A classic yet to be realized.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST ever suspence horror film!
It is not gory, sorry, I like gore, but at the same time gore need not be a crutch to mess with people's heads, you can acheive the same effect with Skinny Puppy, a walk down a long dark windy woods, or watching a movie like this. I've yet to see one better in the Ghost Story Genre.

Description

Tyrus Raymond Cobb played baseball like a man charging a machine-gun nest. He gave no quarter, took no prisoners. And when his Hall of Fame career was over, Ty Cobb attacked life the same way.

Tommy Lee Jones portrays the legendary - and equally cheered and detested - Georgia Peach in this acclaimed film from writer/director Ron Shelton (Bull Durham, Dark Blue), also starring Robert Wuhl and Lolita Davidovich. From its recapturing of the outfielder's playing days (Roger Clemens portrays a rival pitcher) to its recreation of a 1961 Hall of Fame banquet, Cobb is a movie grand slam. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical "HERO" movie
To me, this movie is a dark comedy. Ty Cobb is obviously a racist, abusive mean spirited human being who also happens to be a baseball legend. This movie is about Cobb off the field during his last days as he plans an autobiography on his baseball career. Throughout the movie, he is verbally and physically abusive to those around him. Tommy Lee Jones manages to make his character, at times, sympathetic towards the end of the film as he gets sicker and sicker from one of his many illnesses. This does not change the fact that Ty Cobb was a vicious human being and writer/director Ron Shelton writes the character in a way that makes him funny in some ways. I can't imagine this movie being what it is without Tommy Lee Jones. Jones tends to play arogant know-it-all characters in movies and this one tops them all. This movie was not a hit because of limited release(40 theaters instead of the planned 400 according to Shelton's commentary) but it is easily one of the best movies made about baseball and the people who play the game. Without a doubt Tommy Lee Jones' best performance. Worth taking the time to watch despite the wretched character he portrays in the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a well know movie, but worth viewing!
First off I want to say that although this movie revolves around Ty Cobb, it is not only about baseball. This movie probes deep into a very driven and disturbed ballplayer and husband. While watching the movie you go through what the director is hoping to convey to the viewer...first you hate Cobb, then you start to think that he may not be the monster he has been made out to be.

The acting of Tommy Lee Jones is stellar! One of his finest performances of his well established career. This movie is hard to find on store shelves due to it was not very popular and still isnt, however that should not impeed you from seeing this 5-star film. There are many lines that are quotable for the rest of your life in this film. Cobb's view on the world in general is very entertaining. I laughed out loud many times during his frequent outbursts. My wife, who doesnt like baseball all that well, recommended this film to her grandparents, and they loved it.
So in closing, take two and a half hours and watch a film that will become a sought after movie for your own personal collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Up with The Natural/Major Leagues in baseball greatness
Tyrus Raymond Cobb was unbeieveable on the diamond and as we learn in this masterpiece off the diamond as well. This movie cronicals the last few years of Cobb's life from his violent personality to his love on fine and hot women to his fued with his daughter. Tryus hires Al Stupp (played wonderfully by that guy from Arli$) to write a book about him. However, Cobb wants to be remebered as a nice friendly person not the SOB jagbag he really was(I assume he was, I wasn't around to ever see Cobb play, but i was at the Cubs/Sox game on 5/5/98 when Brant Michael Brown hit a homerun in the 12th inning to beat those jabronis on the South SIde 6-5) Anyway Cobb sees that Arli$ is secruetly writting notes about what a Jagbag he is so Cobb goes nuts and nearly kills Arli$.
Cobb does not kill Arli$ but we do see Cobb as he goes crazy on a nurse and guzles pills with booze.
There are some great lines like when Arlis and his jpurnlists buddies are at the bar and they ask each other who was the greatest babeball player that ever lived and they all say: Ty Cobb, except one guy who says Babe Ruth and they give him some Chit, not Sugar.
Also when Cobb is drunk and tired and Mickey Lolich doesnt want to talk to him Cobb tells Arliss "Carry me back to Georgia"
If your looking for a movie that focuses on Cobb's days w/ the Detroit Tugers then this isnt the movie for you, but if your looking beef, nudity, swears, car chases, Rajaah Clemens (F-Houston, Go Cubdom!!), pills, booze, a deer that gets shots and a scene of a mosaleum then this is the movie for you. I was looking for all those things so thats why I loved this movie.
T-Lee does a great job as Tryus Raymond Cobb. The only other person that could have pulled off this role was Ben(jamin) Geza Affleck, but T-Lee is supurb.
Keep in mind that the VHS/DVD covers differ. The VHS has a great shot of Cobb smoking a cigar while the DVD has Cobb playing baseball, personally i like the VHS cover better but there are some good special feautrues.
Rated R for violence, language, nudity and the killing of a deer.
Great movie to buy or obtain through Inter-library loan but you'll want a copy of this dousie.
Thank you T-Lee, Warner Bros. and Cobb
F-Houston, Bob Pulford and the cancalation of the XFL
I have reiceved 94% helpful votes so I am a trustworty source.

1-0 out of 5 stars How about a movie called...
How about if the film industry makes a movie called 'The Hammer'? Gee, they made 'Cobb, 'The Babe', 'Eight Men Out', 'Field of Dreams', 'The Pride of the Yankees', 'The Natural', and '61*'. Well, how about making a movie about Henry Aaron, Josh Gibson, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, or even Jackie Robinson? Oh, I forgot, baseball will never allow it...

4-0 out of 5 stars The supposedly "real" story of a baseball legend
Ty Cobb was called "the greatest baseball player of all time" and he enjoyed the spotlight. He was also known as "difficult person" to put it mildly. He drank hard, was prone to violence, insulted everybody, beat his wife, alienated his children, was a racist, beat a man to death and was accused of fixing games. In 1960 he had his biography written by a sportswriter named Al Stump. At the time Al Stump wrote a flattering portrait. Later, Stump wrote another book, telling the "real" story about Cobb. And this 1994 film is based on this second book.

The film is set in 1960 when Cobb, then 72 years old, engages Al Stump to write his biography. Stump's a young sportswriter who's flattered by the assignment. At first he hates the arrogant Cobb, but later finds himself admiring him for his "bigger than life" personality. And so he winds up being Cobb's only friend, traveling with him, drinking with him and playing nursemaid to his wild rages and need for constant medication.

Tommy Lee Jones is cast as Cobb, in a larger-than-life performance that humanizes the aging Cobb in spite of his raging racism and generally obnoxious behavior. Robert Wuhl is cast as Al Stump and his performance is equally good as we see him starting to have sympathy for the aging man. Lolita Davidovich is cast as a Reno cigarette girl who is pursued by both Al Stump and Cobb. She gives a good performance but I think the main reason she's in the film is to liven it up with a bit of flesh. There's also a small role played by Roger Clemens, the real-life pitcher in a scene of a baseball game played around 1916. Wisely, the camera doesn't stay too long on Tommy Lee Jones for this scene because he just can't look like a very young man.

The screenplay was ambitious but it lacked something. It was overlong and tended to be boring. Once the general situation was set, there was just one kind of outrageous behavior after another to prove the point that Cobb was difficult and that Stump was starting to admire the old man. In my opinion, the whole film could have been condensed to a one-hour television movie. As I'm interested in baseball, I did enjoy the film. But it certainly isn't one that I can highly recommend. ... Read more

I LOVED THE MOVIE! I saw it last evening for the first time with my husband. Yes, he actually sat through it. It was wonderfully acted. A great love story from start to finish. Great acting by Andrew McCarthy and Teri Polo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight From The Heart
Wonderfully tender, yet funny - cute but serious - everything it takes to make a movie enthusiastically wonderful to watch. Andrew McCarthy is my dream man and Teri Polo did a wonderful job as well. Super movie. Everyone should see it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Andrew McCarthy has matured as an actor and he is still so gorgeous after all these years. This was such a great movie, and I am so glad that I bought it instead of just renting it. He is just so beautiful and still has some of the same acting characteristics that he had when he was in pretty in pink. It is a classic love story and I wouldn't have changed a scene in the entre movie...you should definitely buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Heartwarming
This movie is one of the best purchases that I have ever made. It's good to see Andrew McCarthy back in action again. Both he and Teri Polo are excellent in playing their roles. This movie has humour, sadness, thoughtfulness and romance. The scenery is breathtaking and the filming was excellent. BUY this movie, it's a keeper. I've had it 6 weeks and watched it 12 times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant!
Definitely ahead of it's time.
Each story of the trilogy encourages us to ask some really hard questions about our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars you took my funk from thee
i seen this show back in 93 and from what i saw if given the chance this might have been a sucess, george looked creepy flying around were viewers or whoever that scared that george would take the crypt keepers job. if you love p-funk and want to see what kind of visions the director had peep this, and shake your head in agreement that this would hAVE BEEN THE BOMO.

5-0 out of 5 stars In one word, "DEEP!"
The Chicago Tribune quote on the front of Cosmic Slop's box calls it "A multi-cultural Twilight Zone." That sort of sells it short. It consists of three stories. The first is about aliens which promise to solve America's major problems in exchange for it's African-American people, making an extremely deep commentary on America's attitude toward minorities. The second is about attempts by the Catholic church to suppress the multi-cultural adaptations of it's faith. The third is about the cycle of poverty and abusive behavior and how apparent solutions sometimes lead to tragic endings. There is a break between each story in which Dr. Funkenstein (George Clinton) throws his twist on them. It helps if your a PFunk fan when you're interpreting his remarks but you don't have to know the PFunk lingo to understand the rest. The stories tell it all. This video does have it's set backs. If you can't read Spanish, or don't want to, the subtitles can be a bit

distracting. Also, Dr. Funkenstein's floating head, third eye and ever-changing hairdo's are a bit tacky. There aren't any surprise appearances by or concert footage of PFunk in it either. That is what I was actually hoping for when I ordered this and I recommend getting The Night Before if that's what you're looking for. Still, I'm very glad I got this and I highly recommend it. Because of the strength of it's social-political commentary, I'm giving Cosmic Slop five stars. ... Read more

Jay Bulworth is your typical senator going through a nervous breakdown. The empty speeches, lies, money, and pressure have led him to plan his own assassination on a weekend trip home to California just before the election. However, a cord snaps in him and like Jim Carrey's rambling lawyer in Liar, Liar, Bulworth can only tell the truth. This new freedom turns Bulworth on and he spews the ugly truth about politics: he tells mass media they are as corrupt as insurance companies; lambastes a black church for not having leaders; and riles the Jewish power elite of Hollywood. He enters South Central running away from advisors (including a bemused Oliver Platt) and mixing it up with a potential new girlfriend (Halle Berry) and a local boss (Don Cheadle). He offends acrossthe board, even developing an inherent knack to rap his speeches. And the public loves it. The weekend becomes a clarifying point for Bulworth: he finds a reason to live.

Beatty's rude and relevant comedy is a one-joke movie, but the joke is pretty good. It's a courageous film that is always sharp even though it loses narrative focus. Beatty's hilarious raps are so inspired they deserve repeated viewings. As usual, Beatty surrounds himself with a great crew, Ennio Morricone's music and Vittorio Storaro's cinematography being especially noteworthy. Beatty and Storaro even have the audacity to imitate two very famous photographs in the film's final seconds. The script by Beatty and Jeremy Pikser won the L.A. Film Critics award and was nominated for an Oscar. --Doug Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sincere movie with no target demographic.
A politician has nothing left to lose -- so why not speak the truth? Warren Beatty's Senator Jay Bulworth lays down the smack: the reason the working man (in this movie, the working class is cleverly disguised as hip-hop mavens) doesn't have a voice, is he doesn't have the sway or monetary bullocks to *buy* a voice. Words aren't worth a penny unless you're worth billions. And of course, from the first instant, this divine fool's failure is certain and imminent: Big Business, what with its grimy fingers perpetually immersed in the U.S. Government's proverbial tub of crunchy Jif, would never allow a politician like Bulworth to succeed, at the risk of the working class' newfound capacity to leech the power from the insurance companies and tire manufacturers.

But here's the best part: this poor movie didn't stand a chance of finding a target demographic, just as we know from the first instant Bulworth doesn't stand a chance, either. The movie's occasionally bawdy humor is poised to captivate, paradoxically, *my* demographic (19-year olds who appreciate taboos about racial tension), while its sad, sad message is better suited to working class families who "get it," rather than to, say, people who rent movies all the time, or play the stock market, or capitalize on apathy. In that respect, Bulworth is a sad story, indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Original, daring, and funny, one of the best movies ever.
Here is a movie that you will either love or hate but it certainly won't leave you indifferent. If you dislike Bulworth you most likely either can't stomach the film's left-wing political ideology or you find some aspect of the film offensive. But the willingness of the film to offend is the very thing that makes it so compelling to others. If you don't hate the movie for the above reasons you'll be able to appreciate the just how risky and original this movie is.As Bulworth campaigns, offending everyone and their mother while telling it like it is,you can't help but share in his giddy exhileration and you'll laugh your behind off at the same time. This is the essential theme of the movie and, just to keep things livly,Beatty introduces a variation as Bulworth begins to rap.On these scenes alone the film succeeds as a comedy though there are other very funny scenes(often involving Bulworth's campaign aids).Generaly I'm not a fan of rap but the film's music sets the tone nicely. The cast is universaly excellent, everyone seems to fit their part perfectly and Nina (Halle Berry) looks absolutely gorgeous. At one point, Bulworth is dancing with Nina in a Compton after hours club and,to roughly quote an internet reviewer,"this must be the most erotic scene involving two vertical people in all of cinima."What works in Bulworth works so well that the holes and improbableties inherent in the storyline seem beside the point. They certainly don't detract from the overall effect of the movie.I'm every bit as liberal a Warren Beatty and there is no doubt that your politics play a role in how you respond to the movie but I recomend this movie to everyone, you just might find it enligtening.

1-0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?
What were they thinking? Nevermind, it's actually pretty obvious.

Far from being the deft parody of modern civics that the producers obviously intended, this is an extremely silly movie that trivializes major problems, and frequently borders on being racist, classist, and anti-semitic.

One problem is that this was Warren Beatty's attempt at being "hip" and reaching out to a whole new generation. Well, I'm part of that generation and let me tell you that it just came out as being creepy and pathetic. Warren Beatty and Halley Berry? "Ew" on so many different levels. Warren Beatty being accepted as some sort of "brothah"? You've got to be kidding me. Warren Beatty rapping? Please, just kill me.

The other problem is that this movie attempts to address "problems" in a way that does nothing but rehash old stereotypes. This "inner city" was obviously dreamed up by an elderly woman from the midwest who has never actually met a black person, but has read books where she learned that some of them have hearts of gold and everyone else is a dangerous criminal intent on selling crack to five year olds.

There is a definate generation gap in who likes this movie and who does not. The young, socially aware people that I know think that this movie is paternalistic, insulting, and stupid: and that Warren Beatty should just deal with the fact that he is no longer Hollywood's #1 Heart-throb. My parents and their friends thought it was great and that Warren still has his old spark. Though even they admited that Warren and Halley was pretty "ew."

1-0 out of 5 stars racist, socialist nonsense
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Beatty, a wealthy playboy, tries to paint all whites as willingly racist and stepping on the poor, while at the same time demonstrating anti-semitism. Nice divisive garbage, Beatty. Not funny. Not relevant or at all honest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ghetto Senator
This movie is about a Senator who gets fed up with lying to the people. However it is a movie that is a matter of taste. If you are sensitive regarding racial issues this is certainly not the picture for you. If you like racially laced humor and politics you will probably like this movie, if not fall in love with it. Warren Beatty is excellent in his role as senator Bulworth and Oliver Platt is a riot as Bulworth's campaign manager. Halle Berry is still the most beautiful women in the world...showing that she can make even a totally straight laced senator turn ghetto. It's got it's ups and downs and craziness...some humor and even some surprises. I thought the ending was somewhat surprising. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Campy Chessy Classic
First off, if you don't like horror movies, or just 80's movies in general, you're not going to like this one at all. But if you do, you MUST see this, becuase it is essential to any horror buff's collection. The plot centers around an Anytown,USA type place that suddenly has a local Waxwork mueseum. While walking to school Deborah Foreman and Michelle Johnson are invited to a private showing of the waxwork by the owner himself. Thus, the girls invite Zach Galligan and a few other friends from college to come along. It turns out that the waxwork specializes in murder scenes, and if you get close enough to an exhibit, you will be transformed into its world. That is how Dana Ashbrook meets and becomes a wolfman, and how Michelle Johnson gets a kiss from Dracula. Other classic villains shown; Marquis De Sade, the Mummy, and some zombies a la Night of the Living Dead. It is up to Zach Galligan to unearth some secrets about his family that will help him destroy the Waxwork and its evil owner. My favorite aspects of this movie: the fact that it is made in the 80's, giving it an automatic layer of cheese...Deborah Foreman's performance, as the stereotypical "nice girl," (though her character in April Fool's Day was much more convincing and entertaining)...and the way the director not only pays homage to horror classic, but also the way he pokes fun at it. I'm not completely sure he did this on purpose, but certain scenes involving Dana Ashbrook's character and the local sherriff suggest that the tone of the film was meant to be both comedic and horrific. Even though the movie is not completely brilliant or polished, it still provides entertainment to a certain audience who typically enjoys these kinds of flicks. P.S. Don't bother with the sequel.

4-0 out of 5 stars So Bad it's HILARIOUS
Horror movies are great. At times REALLY bad horror movies are even better. The acting and plot on this is so sub-par that you begin to think that they meant it to be that awful. Which I think they did. The basic concept of the movie is actually quite clever...waxwork scenes that are only missing the "victim" and unsuspecting teens stepping into the gory role. Don't think this is something that I would view over and over again. But definitley a great flick when you have a bunch of friends over and you're all drunk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Flick!!
I have seen this movie at least 20 times and it gets better each time I watch it! Who can resist David Warner in anything?? This movie has everything. Gore, sexuality, and comedy. Who can forget Dana Ashbrook's classic line "Who put the acid in my drink again, China!" Too funny for words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waxworks Review
I thought this movie was good!I've seen it about 3 times....but only once all the way through. Honestly....I don't know how people can dislike it. If you didn't think the movie itself was good, you at least had to like the scenes with Marquis de Sade in them. Not only is he one of the villians that actually are interesting, the acting is really good. He's one of the reasons that I liked the movie. That and I've known him in a past life......but that's a different story all together.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Ashamed
I think the only reason I liked this movie was because of the scenes with the Marquis de Sade. Sorry to say. That was my past life though, so I'll shut up about that. Anyway, actually, it's a fun film and I heard Dario Argento is admired and was an influence on Hickox, so he can't be that bad (you can see it in some of the scenes which are Argento-like). And of course the Marquis de Sade. Sorry. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Target: Whoever watered down this overpriced ruination...
The original miniseries was a riveting and startling film about political ambition gone frighteningly wrong. It even spun off a wonderful but short-lived series ("Mancuso"). The condensation of the movie down to less that two hours destroys any suspense built up during the original's lengthy running time, and if you view the online "preview" of the movie, several important plot points and the very tricky surprise ending are revealed. I'm going to wait patiently for the day the full movie is on DVD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be Wary of the Video's Condensation
When I saw that this title was available, I decided to take a look at my copy from the miniseries' original 1988 broadcast. The six-hour drama is one of the best political thrillers to ever grace the small screen. It is unfortunate the the edited version only clocks in at 115 minutes, far shorter than was intended. It can be imagined that some of the superlative writing and performances have been butchered to accomodate the shortened form.

While stars Harry Hamlin, Linda Kozlowski, and the superb Robert Loggia are magnificent, the supporting performances from "Frasier's" John Mahoney, Ronny Cox, veteran character actors James Whitmore and Mitchell Ryan, as well as a young Jason Alexander are remarkable. Perennial muscle heavy Brian Thompson is there, too, in a memorable role as a professional hitman.

The frequent commentaries about our government and the American public, in general, supplied by Mahoney's "Lou Brenner" really have some "teeth" to them.

The book's author Steve Sohmer wrote the teleplay, and it is obvious that both were labors of love. However, this altered edition is not worthy as a purchase. One should try to catch the original should it ever air on cable.

Rating: 5 stars for the original; 1 star for this version = 3 star average

4-0 out of 5 stars This movie will blow you away
Originally this was a mini-series on NBC Television starring Harry Hamlin of "LA Law," Linda Koslowski of "Crockadille Dundee," Stephanie Krammer of "Hunter," and Robert Loggia as Nick Manicuso. An NBC television series was spun off from this mini-series starring Loggia called "Manicuso FBI." "Favorite Son" is the story about a U.S. Senator, "Hamlin" who is shot, but still manages to deliver a very heartfelt speach after being wounded which makes him America's "Favorite Son." As a result, he makes a run for the U.S. Presidency. This movie has some incredible twists and a fantastic ending. If you liked the more recent movie, "Wild Things," you should enjoy this. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Three Little Words
Unfortunately, this movie came out at a time when a lot of very funny comedies were on the horizon (Heartbreakers, American Pie 2, Freddy Got Fingered, etc.), so, it didn't review as well as it would have. While it was not as over-the-top as American Pie 2, it does rank right up there. I didn't give it five stars because at times it seems to drag. All editorial and press reviews aside, this was a very good movie. At times, I would find myself almost coughing from laughing so hard.

Here's a synopsis: The movie begins with a group of friends who are very disillusioned, they are afraid of commitment and want to remain "Tomcats" forever. They all place money into a high-yield mutual fund in the mid-90's and thinking that it wouldn't be that big of deal leave it there to collect interest. Flash-forward to present day, the pot is now almost half a million dollars and there are only two unmarried guys left, Kyle (Gary Busey) and Michael (Jerry O'Connell). While at their friend's wedding in Las Vegas, Michael gets in trouble at the craps table to the tune over 50 thousand dollars. He hatches a plan to fix up Kyle (who is filthy rich and pretty much has a different girl every night), with a former bridesmaid at his friend's wedding all those years ago, Natalie (played hilariously by Shannon Elizabeth). What follows are some of the most disgusting, degrading, and downright depraved scenes that I've seen to date (...). See this movie if you're a fan of gross-out comedy, or if you're just looking for a good laugh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wretched In Every Possible Way
This movie fails in every possible way a comedy can:

The characters are so repellent and unfunny that you don't care what happens to them.
The story barely exists after 20 minutes.
The "gags" are torturously lame, especially the scene involving a hospital cafeteria and David Ogden Stiers.

Growing up in the 80's, we sat through a lot of horrible comedies aimed at the all-important teen male audience only to hear, "Well, that sucked but at least we got to see (hot actress name here) naked."
TOMCATS doesn't even deliver on that.

What's the point?

5-0 out of 5 stars Um, anyone for balls?
No matter how many times I watch this movie, it never gets "tiring"!

A pretty good storyline features a host of hilarious moments .... if you ask me, this movie is about typical guys, their dislike of marriage, and the need for cash! In amongst this are some moments, you will never forget .... chasing the testical, throwing the dice, and well, I have to say it - the chick in the back seat of the car and Kyle ..... this is hilariously funny (maybe to the point of disgusting?) ... and of course the 'pretty' funny bachelors party scene ... also deserves a mention!

This is one of the best comedies I have seen in ages and ages, and for all you girls out there, this is not only for the guys! It should be taken in the "tone" that it's set in (it's a comedy and not serious) .... and you should sit back and enjoy the ride! ...... and, if you can't find it funny then it will at least gross you out in parts - enough that you will have to laugh anyways (not so bad if you ask me)!

Either way, you definitely shouldn't miss this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars 3 words
Rude Crude Funny

If you don't like raunchy comedies, than don't bother. However, if you like movies such as There's Something About Mary or American Wedding, than you will like this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars This guy has such bad luck with every female he meets.
A group of male pals are at the wedding of a friend. When he gets married, Jerry O'Connell, (as "Michael") and the rest of the men agree to never get married, be single and be a "Tomcat". Horatio Sanz (as "Steve") agrees too, but the next thing they know, he gets married too. Michael and Steve are still friends. Everytime Michael meets a woman, bad luck happens and he gets in trouble with thugs or the law. He's a innocent as can be. Horatio Sanz (NBC's Saturday Night Live) is hilarious and a delight in this film. Billy Hufsey plays a "Pit Boss". ... Read more

Amazon.com essential video

Meticulously crafted but also ponderous and predictable, James Cameron's 1989 deep-sea close-encounter epic reaffirms one of the oldest first principles of cinema: everything moves a lot more slowly underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as formerly married petroleum engineers who still have some "issues" to work out, are drafted to assist a gung-ho Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) with atop-secret recovery operation: a nuclear sub has been ambushed and sunk, under mysterious circumstances, in some of the deepest waters on earth, and the petro-techies have the only submersible craft capable of diving down that far. Every image and every performance is painstakingly sharp and detailed (and the computerized water creatures are lovely) but the movie's lumbering pace is ultimately lethal. It's the audience that ends up feeling waterlogged. For a guy who likes guns as much as Cameron (his next film after all, was the body-count masterpiece Terminator 2: Judgment Day), it's interestingthat the moral balance here is weighted heavily in favor of the can-do engineers; the military types are end-justifies-the-means amoralists, just like the weasely government bureaucrats in Aliens. --David Chute ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THIS is why you should own a DVD player!
Few other "Special Edition" discs get you as intimately familiar with a film and the film-making process as this new DVD does, though the laser disc collector's edition of TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY comes awful close. Now you fortunate DVD-player owners can get for about $30-$40 dollars what we laser disc owners shelled out $100 for years ago, plus more. A heart-pounding movie, beautifully and intricately shot under nearly impossible circumstances (it wasn't nicknamed "The toughest shoot in film history" for nothing). Part military action thriller, part love story, and all impressive, THE ABYSS SPECIAL EDITION on DVD gives you both the theatrical version and expanded version of the movie (even the laser disc only had a one-version option), documentaries (the longer one is not to be missed), and enough bonus features to monopolize your entire day. It can really take the whole afternoon and evening to see it ALL. Granted, at 171 minutes the expanded version is a bit cumbersome at times, but by then you are so engrossed you don't mind. We've all seen good-looking special effects movies undermined by a so-so script or lame acting. But THE ABYSS delivers where it counts -- solid performances and an often tense script. This is the version to own. All other versions and formats of this film pale in comparison - even the expensive laser disc version. For what you'll pay for this disc you get much more than your money's worth. This collection sets a new standard for discs with bonus features. And if you enjoyed THE MATRIX for how it took full advantage of your surround-sound system, this disc will also please. Make sure your subwoofer is turned on.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Abyss"
The Abyss (PG-13) 5/5
Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Michael Biehn, Leo Burmester, Todd Graff.
Directed by James Cameron.
Synopsis: A deep sea oil rig crew is recruited to investigate a submarine crash, but something unknown resides in the abyss.
Special Features: Original Theatrical and Extended Versions of the Film, Feature Length Commentary for Both Versions, Filmographies.
Review: One of my all time favorite films. An oil rig crew is joined by a military team to investigate a mysteriously downed sub. As they descend into the abyss they begin to realize they may be the only humans down there, but they are not alone. Sci-fi has never been better this deep social commentary was originally cut by hack producers thus again proving they know jack about films. Know it is restored in its originally intended glory. Ed Harris is as always fantastic, Mastrantonio is great, and Biehn has fun with his bad guy role. The rest of the crew excels too. Cameron is in his staple genre and he directs to perfection. As for the DVD? Should've bought the 5-star collection. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! This is a solid disc, but really this is one film worth the extra cash.

3-0 out of 5 stars What is this digipak version?
This digipak edition DVD does NOT have a 5.1 soundtrack. The picture remains letterboxed, not anamorphic, and it still carries the THX certification, though it is not marked so on the box. If you can, obtain the original Special Edition release in plastic case with black cover, it has the 5.1 soundtrack. If, like me, you are still waiting for the proper anamorphic release of The Abyss, this is NOT IT, it is simply an inferior repackaging.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully made, a little dramatic
I always had The Abyss on my to-see list and now I finally have. I was not dissapointed for it feels a little like an underwater 'Close Encounters'. The effects are great, the water space aliens are wonderful and the first time view of the underwater city is breathtaking.

The morale of the movie is bad. Americans and Russians are screwing up the world so the aliens try to prevent it. 'Can't we all just get along!?' is what they want for us, then things will turn to better.

Industrial Light and magic did a great job again in this 1989 movie, it's worth seeing for SF fans.

2-0 out of 5 stars False Advertising
The Abyss single disc edition is a cool movie, but the actual movie is not in Dolby 5.0 as Amazon.com or Dolby 5.1 as the DVD jacket would have us believe, but only in Dolby 2.0 (2 channel) English or French. I tried both the theatrical and the special edition cut, same result.

Buyer beware. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not totally disappointing but could have been much better...
Jake Grafton (Brad Johnson) and Virgil Cole (Willem Dafoe) are Navy A-6 Intruder bomber pilots in the Vietnam war. After repeatedly bombing useless targets determined by questionable military intelligence and political considerations that have led to needless deaths of their fellow pilots by shootdowns, they decide to take matters into their own hands.

Choosing to fly behind enemy lines and deep into Hanoi to destroy a surface to air missle depot, they accompish the task at the expense of being subjected to the military justice system and a possible court martial for their actions.

Flight of the Intruder happens to be a dismal adaptation from Stephen Coont's book of the same name. Apart from making comparisons, this movie redeems itself in the few aspects of good aerial photography, some decent action scenes of war sequences in the jungle, and slightly above average acting performances by Willem Dafoe, Danny Glover, Tom Sizemore, and Brad Johnson.

The DVD content itself is anorexic to put it mildly. You won't find any extras here beyond the usual fare of a good digital 5.1 soundtrack, widescreen presentation, and subtitles. If you're a fan of war movies, this probably isn't a great addition to a DVD collection but I'd recommend renting it if you like the genre of film.

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 star Movie/Action/Cast/16:9Widescreen,4 Star Pix qualit,y!
The A-6 was the United States Navy's Medium (A) Attack bomber during the Vietnam conflict. It flew at tree-top level in any weather at night and alone. The A-6 had NO defensive weapons. It was called - The INTRUDER.

That is the opening statement to an outstanding action movie. The thought of flying unarmed over hostile territory circa 1972 presents a very exciting war tale indeed.

Danny Glover, Willem Dafoe and Brad Johnson are a great ensemble cast.

The "Flight of the Intruder" based on Stephen Coonts (former Naval Aviator) novel of the same name. Coonts has written an entire fictionalized series based on Jake Grafton (played by Brad Johnson) exciting Naval career. The "Flight of the Intruder" was the first in that series.

Summary: Young Naval Aviator Lt. Jake Grafton pilots the infamous A (Attack) - 6 Intruder over 1972 Vietnam. You get to experience lots of great aerial photography, plenty of action and the unbelievable daring of these A-6 Naval pilots. This includes low level (200 feet) bombing missions (dodging all kinds of enemy fire). "Iron Hand" the art of an Armed A-6 versus' SAM (Surface to Air Missles). They shoot first up to 4 missles before you can attack them!!! Great stuff!!!!

Paramount's WideScreen DVD Collection presents the viewer with some OUTSTANDING MOVIES at an economical price. The only short fall one Extra is the trailer and the Enhanced 16:9 WideScreen HDTV is some what grainy on my 55" Home Theatre Screen. The sound is outstanding!

Overall this is a great war movie for the collector!! This DVD is worth the price of admission. Enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars Will get your blood pressure higher if you love aviation
Yeah, yeah... I agree with many other viewers. The movie storyline is not as good as in the book in two areas: 1. the in-depth description of its characters -I guess it's just too hard a job to explore the complexity of human personalities within 90mn; 2. the ending which, in the book, is a bit more in line with the actual war in Vietnam.

And also, that's true that the special effects are somewhat dated now...

But boy, being a professional of aviation, living, breathing, dreaming of it every day of my life, I can't applaude enough to the fact of being able to watch a movie that DOES feature combat aircraft! Just count the number of good action movies that actually show these machines, and I bet you'll be able to count them on the fingers of, say, 2 hands. That's just to stay on the optimistic side of things.

Flight of the Intruder is a real cool movie in terms of aircraft footage. You are "behind the wheel", at times you are literally in control of the aircraft. Your heart pumps faster when this ugly looking -and sounding- SAM detection signal flashes to and screams at the crew. And watch these unforgettable scenes with the A-1 Skyraiders, the famous "Sandys" at the end of the film! The shots, the sounds... Everything contributes to raising the hair of your neck with passion!

The movie itself is pretty well documented too, if only a bit too simplified. Looks like the film was technically supported by both the Navy and the Air Force. The pilots' jargon is accurate, and so is the overall A-6 bombing philosophy.

And after viewing it, you'll sit back and start reflecting on it, and I'm pretty sure that you'll end telling yourself: "These fly-boys in Vietnam... They sure had real guts". Hats and heads down, ladies and gentlemen, and respect for courage!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better then Top Gun
This movie should have been better then Top Gun.
In everyones mind though we all want the speed and cockyness of
a fighter pilot.
But, as the line states,"Fighter pukes make movies, bomber pilots make history."
I believe that because this movie wasn't as big as Top Gun is
because there was a little love story in Intruder, that was not
as big Top Guns steamy love scenes.
This movie to me was better then Top Gun because of the absence
of a steamy romance, just a hint.
This movie, should be considered a classic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Action, Some Truth
Because my dad was a A-6 Bombadier/Navigator in Vietnam, I have a bias regarding this movie. It is highly entertaining and action-packed, however, the truth of the story lies somewhere in the middle and there's not much of it in this screenplay.
I'm sure that many of the Navy's aviators in Vietnam grew weary of hitting "suspected" truck parks, oil refineries and missle sites, but I have yet to hear tales from my dad or his buddies about anyone who decided to fight their own war and fly through downtown Hanoi in order to destroy a SAM (surface-to-air missle) storage area all on their own.
Guys got shot down alot during the war, yes, but they were mostly Air Force guys (that's meant to be a dig!), and rarely a Navy A-6. In this movie, we see several from one squadron on the same cruise go down. Not too realistic. The quickly referred to "Operation Linebacker" was a real mission (proud to say that my dad was in the first plane over N Vietnam on that mission) and followed up by Linebacker II later on. It was not, however, inspired because of what the two lead characters in this movie did.
The flying is pretty realistic though and it is nice to see the not-as-sexy-as-a-fighter-jet Grumman A-6 Intruder in a movie; I give it three stars for that. Still...I would rather listen to real bomber pilots and b/n's relate their adventures in 'Nam and aboard ship.
If you want a real Vietnam movie, stick with "Apocalypse Now", "Full Metal Jacket" and "Platoon". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE SPECIAL EFFECTS DISSATER FLICK!!!!
IN SOME RESPECTS "THE GREAT LOS ANGELES EARTHQUAKE", HAS EVEN GREATER SPECIAL EFFECTS THAN DID THE 1974 DISASTER FILM "EARTHQUAKE!" EVEN WITHOUT SENSURROUND AND A GRAND STELLAR CAST, THIS TV FILM WAS MORE SURREALISTIC TO WATCH TIME AND TIME AGAIN!!!! I DEFINITELY WOULD WATCH THIS FILM MORE THAN "EARTHQUAKE", EVEN WITH IT'S ADDED FOOTAGE!!!!
YOU DIDN'T HAVE WALTER MATTHEAU IN A "STUPID" CAMERO SCENE AS A DRUNK AT A BAR! HIS PERFORMANCE ABSOLUTELY RUINED THE SERIOUS CALABIER OF THE ORIGINAL "EARTHQUAKE!" THAT CHARACTER SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXCLUDED FROM THE MAIN PRINT!!! AT LEAST THEN, "EARTHQUAKE" WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE SURREALISTIC, EVEN WITH THE PROCESS SENSURROUND (WHICH REALLY WAS MOST EFFECTIVE IN THE 1976 CLASSIC "MIDWAY!!!!")

5-0 out of 5 stars this rating refers to the 180minute miniserie!!!!
This is one of the greatest earthquake movies ever made! But I see this version is a cut-into-movie version. Here in the Netherlands I bought the 3 hour miniserie, which is very good.
Great SFX and a great suspense-building story, which isn't boring at any moment!
I've watched this movie so many times now, and still it touches me. Maybe thats got something to do with me living in a city like Los Angeles. I live in HEERLEN, the Netherlands, a big city also built on a fault. In 1992 we had a damaging 6.2 earthquake here, and since then, 3 or 4 quakes per month between 3-5 on the scale. So like L.A. we're also waiting for the big one here, and that makes this movie even more frightening to me. Because this movie shows what can happen in a convincing way, in other words the SFX are super!
Must see movie, but see the 3 hour version, because I can imagine that the movie version isn't that good, like other reviewers said. It's an outrage that this movie is cut! Who has the right to trim a movie?! I always wonder about that, since movie is an art-form. What gives people the right to adjust a piece of art? I mean we don't change a painting of Van Gogh, so why do people change the editing of a movie? It makes me real mad. Anyway stay off the trimmed version and look for the full version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shook Up
While it has many of the same problems that most disaster films do (greed, ambition, melodramatic subplots), THE BIG ONE is still a rather scary made-for-TV movie. Joanna Kerns (of TV's "Family Matters") portrays seismologist Claire Winslow as a cross between CalTech seismologists Kate Hutton and Lucy Jones as she tries to warn those in power of a potentially catastrophic quake that she thinks is prime to slam the Los Angeles area. As usual, out of fear for causing the real estate market to crash, much like in JAWS, those in power try to cover up her warnings.

But when the Big One hits, it hits with force. This may be only a television movie, but the visual effects here, of buildings violently swaying and the ferocious destruction scenes, are about as frighteningly real as I've seen anywhere. The scenarios raised in this film may not always be plausible, but they are definitely possible. That is why, despite some typically melodramatic performances and clunky dialogue, THE BIG ONE is highly effective.

1-0 out of 5 stars I feel the same as Mr. Gambaccini.
I purchased this video after seeing the miniseries, and was very, very disappointed. My video was put out by VIDMARK Entertainment, and ran only 106 minutes. I will never buy anything made by them again. The miniseries was 3 hours long. I would also like to find the original uncut movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars I AM VERY ANGRY!
I saw this movie on television when it was a Two Part mini series. Then it was re-released as a 3 hour version. This version is so ugly and short that the movie has no guts to it any more. they didnt even remove the names off the credits of some of the people whose parts they removed. I love the first two versions. If anyone has the origional on tape or the second airing. Not to mention they never mention the father at the end, so his character basically is dead. Awfull cut. ... This chaotic and gratuitously violent movie deservedly took a nosedive when released in 1996.It belongs in the same category of air-disaster movies as Con Air and Air Force One, but those films could be considered masterpieces in comparison to this schlock. Ray Liotta gives an over-the-top performance as the so-called Lonely Hearts Killer, who seizes control of a 747 during mid-flight and proceeds to wreak havoc. He kills just about everyone, but Lauren Holly survives as the flight attendant who eventually has to land the damaged airliner while the pilot of another 747 (Ben Cross) talks her through the landing procedure. Sound familiar? It ought to--Turbulence is another grab bag of thriller clichés. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay, if you are in the mood.
This movie may seem a bit dated. Action movies today nearly always have some ironic or political edge. Turbulence is just violence and action just for the sake of it. If you want to see cool plane action and stunts rent Executive Decision or Con Air.

We're supposed to care about the characters but we don't. The action scenes are supposed to thrill us but merely entertain in a big, dumb way. And Ray Liotta just isn't scary as the serial killer. He goes way over the top. But, thankfully, is never campy (always a mistake when playing serial killers, coughhannibalcough). There is just no reason for watching this film unless you're the kind of person who likes to watch boring movies for a solid 90 minutes for a good bit that's over in 30 seconds.

The R1 DVD is in very cool Dolby 5.1 and is shown in the incorrect aspect ratio of 1.78:1 (16x9 enhanced) instead of the theatrical 2.35:1. The R2 DVD however is in Dolby 2.0 Surround but shows the film in the proper ratio of 2.35:1.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fasten your safety belt!
Here is one of those movies of the "terror at 35,000 feet" variety that is far more entertaining than the plot might indicate. It's good for a wild ride on a Friday night when you have idle time.

The film centers around a prison transport of two violent malefactors. The flight is coast-to-coast and there are barely any passengers. In addition to the 2 criminals are 4 U.S. Marshalls who serve as escorts. Unfortunately for the passengers and crew, the Marshalls turn out to be incompetent while the criminals are far more clever than they look.

What ensues is sheer chaos high above the clouds. To make matters worse, the plane is also going thru a violent thunderstorm (the special effects in this area alone are worth the cost of the DVD).

Ultimately, the biggest reason to watch this film is the cast. The dynamic Ray Liotta plays an enigmatic and ambiguous character that is difficult to place your finger on. The lovely Lauren Holly plays Bambi the flight attendant and the venerable Ben Cross portrays a righteous 747 pilot.

If you like movies such as EXECUTIVE DECISION, AIR FORCE ONE and the AIRPORT disaster movies of the 1970s, give this one a try. It belongs to the same genre and is at least as good as all of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars FLY THE UNFRIENDLY SKIES
TURBULENCE, directed by Robert Butler, is one of those escapist movies where you can't focus too much on the plot or the pure stupidity of the writers. Here's some thoughts:
THE SCRIPT: Does well, even though it's not hard to see from the beginning that Liotta's character is as evil as Elizondo's says he is---big problem, though: the writer has Lauren Holly doing some really stupid things, like leaving the cockpit, engaging in a conversation with her would-be killer, and frequently disregarding the people who are trying to land the plane! SCORE: 2
THE CAST: Ray Liotta goes over the top, but he's such a commanding actor that it works beautifully; Lauren Holly does well considering what the script does to her character; Rachel Ticoctin is warm and fuzzy as one of the flight navigators; Catherine Hicks (Child's Play) does a good job and doesn't deserve what happens to her, either; and Brendan Gleeson(28 Days Later) is vile as the prisoner who starts the whole mess. SCORE: 4
TECHNICALLY: Special fx are not overwhelming, but good; the scene where the plane crashes into the karaoke bar is stunning; the direction is fast-paced, but he should have strangled the writer; good sound editing. SCORE: 4

SUMMARY: Entertaining "Hollywood" movie; not as bad as some others felt.

4-0 out of 5 stars you've seen it before, but this one is good
you've all seen movies where the bad guys seize the plane and reck havoc like in Con Air, Air Force One, Executive Decision and so forth. Liotta is dynamite in a tour-de-force performance as he kills off everyone on the plan except a few and Lauren Holly who has trouble dealing with the fact that a psycho is trying to kill her and she doesnt know how to land the damn plane. intense, violent and that is good enough for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Turbulence"
This is a pretty good movie. Ray Liotta is totally over the top and Lauren Holly is not that good. The action is not that bad it kinda cool. But if you want a good air disaster film see "Air Force One" and stay away from "Turbulences" two sequels: "Turbulence 2: Fear of Flying" and "Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal" The 1st is enough! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Stallone Movie Ever Made!
Stop or My Mom Will Shoot is one of the best movies that Stallone has Ever Made. It is about a cop whose life isn't going so good. When his mother comes to visit she changes everything for the good. His mother witneses a murder and she has to stay to help find the killer. With Sylvester Stallone, Estelle Getty, and JoBeth Williams you couldn't ask for a better cast. I highly recomend this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stallone is the Ultimate Superstar!
I can not tell you how much this movie has changed my life. Just when my life couldn't get any worse, I saw "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot". Sylvester Stallone is the savior for mankind. When you think armageddon is upon us, just watch Stallone in this uplifting, spiritual movie. The relationship with his mother is unbelievable and touching. This motion picture deserves to be recognized and to be viewed by the world. Universal Pictures needs to release this movie on DVD, not for me, but for the human race.

3-0 out of 5 stars some funny parts, some boring parts
this movie's worth a rent.it is i admit kinda boring but it is also very funny at times.mostly action and comedy combined together since it is a sylvester stallone movie

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic that excretes patriotism from every orifice
In an era inspired by the likes of Pat Tillman, John McCain and Ryan Seacrest, Sylvester Stallone's 1992 Gulf War opus "Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot!" is still as powerful during today's troubled global situation as it was during the senior Bush's initial campaign to liberate the noble god-fearing folks of Kuwait.

Inspired by her son's decision to enlist in the military to eliminate the obvious nuclear threat residing in Iraq, Tutti Bomowski (Estelle Getty) decides to re-enlist herself. Having been the first female Navy Seal in U.S. history, and a decorated war hero in Korea, the one condition of her military service is to be assigned to the same elite fighting squadron as her son Joe (Stallone). Their top-secret operation carries them right into the fringes of Baghdad where they uncover Saddam's diabolical plan to blow up the ocean. Despite their combined lethal skills, one of them won't make it out alive.

Teeming with realistic wartime violence, this is not everyone's cup of tea. However, if you're a fan of Sam Peckinpah's bloody cinematic ballet, you will find much to appreciate in Stallone's work. In fact, as a moving tribute to the motherly tone of this epic, Stallone was assisted by Peckinpah's 93-year old mother Myrtle in helping choreograph many of the action sequences, most notably the legendary bungee-jumping battle scenes.

Sly showed that he's a master of many crafts in "Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot!" Not only did he write, produce, direct, and star in this film, but he also wrote and performed the amazing musical score as well. "Over The Top" and "Cobra" may have introduced the world to the possible talents that Stallone possesses, but it was this film that truly made him a legend that will live on for several weeks to come.
