Amazon.com It looks like writer-director Rick Famuyiwa started a popular trend with his marriage-jitters comedy about three friends who reminisce about their lives together as one prepares to leave the group when he gets married. Everyone who rushed to see The Best Man should catch this sleeper which also stars Taye Diggs (as Roland, the reluctant groom), as well as Omar Epps and Richard T. Jones, who together provide charming, cheerful performances full of warmth and humor. This buddy story is told through flashbacks to 1986, when the three met at public school. The young men gain our affection in their competition to win the most girls, which enhances the bond of loyalty we see in them as men on the eve of Roland's wedding. The casting of the boy actors is almost spooky in its perfection, especially Sean Nelson (who had already proven his acting acumen in American Buffalo) as the younger version of Epps. Although the cast is African American, there's no color bar to the themes or entertainment the movie offers, providing a salient lesson to network TV producers under attack by the NAACP for their inability to include characters of color in TV shows. Instead of stereotyping the characters by placing them in "the hood," where gang members and tragedy rule, this life-affirming comedy depicts the lives of members of "the wood," which refers to Inglewood, a middle-class suburb of L.A. that general audiences will find easy to relate to.--Lloyd Chesley ... easily the best movie that i have ever seen!
finally a independent black movie, that doesn't deal with drugs, and the ever plot line about ghetto life and love. this movie is easily my favorite movie and for many reasons. the main idea of the movie, is that the 3 boys, are reliving all of there high school memories right before the big wedding of taye diggs. i liked every part and i have to say that i was never borded. the movie is so realistic, and it explains teenage life to the full, with realistic problems, language & conversations, its a movie i really could relate to, and i like a lot.
The Wood is Good!
The Wood is Good! The acting throughout the whole movie was convincing and believable. After seeing this Omar Epps has gone up another level on my acting list, same thing for Taye Diggs. Sanaa Lathan didn't have a big part as I thought she was going to, but her pretty face was enough. I thought young Mike was a real good actor and that he needs to play in more movies. I was born in the 80's so I don't know what it was like being a teenager then b/c i am one now, but I can relate to how the characters at. It's a movie that will be timeless and last forever b/c it doesn't matter what kind of neighborhood you're from it still deals with camaraderie and friendship till the end. That's the main theme that really surfaced at the end and at the wedding. Well, I thought this movie was really good and I was glad that it didn't have to deal with drugs b/c that's been played out and black casts and directors need to start thinking of movies that have more substance to them. Actors like Taye Diggs and Omar Epps are versatile to do them b/c I remember a movie that Epps did a long time ago when he was unheard of...Deadly Voyage. Go see this.
One of the Best
It is so refreshing to see a African American movies where the characters are not on drugs, poor, sad and angry. Showing that is important, but showing movies with this kind of background is needed also. The Wood does exactly this as it shows friends, who generally care for one another and their life through school and into adulthood. I commend this movie because it is correct. I had so many of these experiences. I love the bully scene and hitting the girl butt, and his uncertainity of getting married. These issues are life and it was shown in a wonderful lgiht and setting. This is a must own.
The Best Movie In The World
This is my favorite movie of all time. I was still in highschool when I seen it the first time and feel in love with it. It show's that as males we shouldn't be afraid to show or feelings on matters of the heart. The acting was brilliant (coming from a inspiring actor/screenwriter). I my for this movie is so strong. when it first came out on dvd I watched it at least 4 times a day for like three times a Months. It's a great film and if you are into really goog black cinema this movie on friendship and love is for you. Trust Me.
One of my favorite movies
I just love this movie. I don't buy DVD's for the extras. I was so happy I could get this movie on DVD. The movie is about three men who are friends. One is getting married, and he is having second thoughts. The movie takes you through a series of flash backs. I spend time laughing at how folks dressed and wore their hair. It makes you remember when you were in junior and high school. The movie is fun. It's a movie about choices, growing up, friendship and most of all love. Loving your family, friends and the one you want to spend the rest of yoru life with. It's a fun movie to watch.
