5-0 out of 5 stars A movie that's--sadly!--still one-of-a-kind
When it was released in 1982, MAKING LOVE was publicized as the first film from a major Hollywood studio to take an honest look at homosexuality. Today, even in our more tolerant social climate, the movie remains just about the only film from a major Hollywood studio to take an honest look at homosexuality. MAKING LOVE is a compassionate, sensitive examination of one man coming to discover, and accept, that he is gay.

Zack (Michael Ontkean) and Claire (Kate Jackson) are a young, attractive and successful married couple; he is a physician and she is a television producer. They have just bought a new home and talk about having a child. But Zack begins to question his sexual identity and to close himself off from his wife. Then he meets Bart (Harry Hamlin), a sexually adventurous gay man who forces Zack to come to terms with his sexual feelings.

Although MAKING LOVE is nearly twenty years old, the only things dated about the movie are the clothing and hairstyles. There have certainly been other Hollywood movies that deal with homosexuality (PHILADELPHIA, IN AND OUT, etc.). But most of these movies seem oddly hesitant to address difficult issues or deflect them by using humor. By contrast, MAKING LOVE presents with complete honesty a man learning to accept that he is gay, along with all of the conflicted feelings and painful choices this involves.

Barry Sandler's script is outstanding. It employs a device that today has become an annoying cliche: characters sharing their inner feelings by directly addressing the camera. But in this film, the device really works, thanks to honest writing and performances.

All three lead actors are excellent, giving us portraits of believable, imperfect human beings who nonetheless try to do their best with the situation that confronts them. A special word of praise must go to Kate Jackson. Certainly Jackson's TV work (CHARLIE'S ANGELS, SCARECROW AND MRS. KING) never gave her the chance to play such an intelligent, fully-rounded character. Jackson is excellent and in a few scenes is so thoroughly convincing that she breaks your heart.

Arthur Hiller's direction is understated and eloquent. And Leonard Rosenman's musical score is superb. His score helps us to recognize the movie for what it is: a tender and bittersweet love story. For example, early on there is a scene in which Zack has a painful meeting with a cancer patient and, distraught over his inability to help her, goes cruising for a sexual partner. Rosenman's musical score helps us to see that Zack's act is not cheap or sensational but instead is an attempt by a lonely, confused man to find emotional connection.

A movie of exceptional quality, MAKING LOVE should be much better known. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for an intellegent, compassionate presentation of the many emotional issues surrounding coming to acceptance of homosexuality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to the HEART of the matter!
To say this film is still groundbreaking would be a stretch, but it still hits home. In 1982, theater goers were either exiting quickly or more wisely, staying to marvel at this film's honesty and heart and its winning performances.

Kate Jackson, Michael Ontkean and Harry Hamlin turn in a powerhouse effort in this Authur Hiller film about a career successful married couple, Claire and Zack Elliot (Jackson and Ontkean) who must face the reality that their union is not all it seems. After eight years of marriage, Zack's repressed homosexuality begins to surface. Enter handsome writer Bart Mcguire (Hamlin), who innocently meets Zack in the ordinary circumstance of a doctor's visit. Bart has been around the gay scene for some time, and is quite happy in his world of one night stands and conquests....or is he?

How all this unfolds is great viewing. "Making Love" has it's soap opera moments and is somewhat dated, but the performances and overall writing and direction overcome these slight flaws. Handsome Ontkean is dead on as the confused yet well intentioned Zack. Whatever spoken or written about this film hurting Ontkean's career is trivial, this remains his best work to date. Hamlin is almost distracting in a role that was obviously well researched complete with subtle mannerisms. Kate Jackson turns in one of her best yet tender performances in a film that remains a cornerstone in gay cinema.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE DVD???
This movie has always held a special place in my collection. It reminds me of growing up and coming to terms with life. The performances of Kate Jackson, Michael Ontkean, Harry Hamlin and Wendy Hiller are emotionally charged. Some may say it's an outdated film, but it never fails to bring a tear to my eye when the main characters come to accept their past and how their lives have evolved. I'll never forget seeing it at the theater.
I remember when Zack and Bart kissed, some girl in the audience
laughed out loud. For me, it was a very touching moment and that laughter really bothered me at the time. Thankfully, people are more accepting of gay relationships now.
I am hoping that the studios will provide this gem on DVD soon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Honey, I'm Gay
A silly soap opera about a young doctor, happily married to a beautiful woman who discovers that he's gay. The homosexual theme is handled gingerly and with sympathy, but the story is overly sentimental and comes off as trite and naive. The happy ending fails to touch the heart.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy early effort
When released in 1982, director Arthur Hiller's "Making Love" was a bold venture for its time and critcally panned, probably more for its risky content than its acting. Between her TV gigs as one of Charlie's angels and Mrs. King to a Scarecrow, veteran actress Kate Jackson said she would have offered to pay for the role of a TV executive married to a doctor, played by former "Rookies" co-star Michael Ontkean. But with his wife so tied up with her work, husband Zak begins to explore a long-buried curiosity about a same-sex encounter. He finds it in studly writer Harry Hamlin, then a new face on the acting horizon. With his same-sex desires and preference unleashed, Zak has to come clean with wife Kate, and the climactic scene in which Zak confesses his homosexuality is carried with appropriate emotional shock by both Jackson and Ontkean. By today's standards, the film may seem dated and irrelevant, but it was hardly so at the time. A good script is bolstered by good acting and singer Roberta Flack's haunting theme song that was a chart-buster in '82. Beyond the film's obvious topic, it also renders a subtle lesson in the need for honesty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A movie I have searched for , for a long time.
Having been born in 1968, the year of the tet offensive, I have only second and third hand imformation from books, movies, and anecdotes, concerning that time in history. So, it is from that perspective I review this movie. This story takes place during the Tet offensive, in which a small American firebase is forced to defend itself against overwhelming odds. The only hope for this base is a battle hardened seargent, who takes control of the situation and becomes the young soldiers only hope for survival. This movie is in my opinion the most realistic war film, prior to "Saving Private Ryan" and holds the top spot along with "Hamburger Hill" as the best of the Vietnam war movies. Forget "Apocalypse Now" this is the movie that tells the Vietnam experience. Buy it you will not regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a soldier, but I REALLY enjoyed this movie
I can't really comment on it's authenticity, but I enjoyed this movie more than most Vietnam era equivalents. Wings Hauser is very good in his role, but I can't say enough GREAT things about R. Lee Ermy in this movie. His voiceovers about the situations faced by he and his troops, as well as his acting and actions are top notch. This movie is visually powerful, and yet manages to tow a fine line between history, and entertainment. As well, it takes a suprisingly neutral stance on the Vietnamese themselves, giving you things to ponder as you watch it, making you wonder if you would behave any different if your country were being 'invaded'. It pays its respects to the compatants on BOTH sides, and isn't just another one of your typical American flag waving propaganda war films. This movie deserves to be seen by a wider audience, it is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
I have just watched this film and I thought that it was the best Vietnam War film I have evey seen. After watching Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Hamburger Hill I find 'Siege of Fire Base Gloria' refreshing and hard hitting. War at the best of times is harrowing and usless but this film brought home the comradeship and closeness one finds in the services and during times of conflict. It was well directed and very well acted and showed a true representation of war you would not find other wise by actually being there. Its a shame you only have five stars because this film and its actors deservse 10+

5-0 out of 5 stars DRAGONWOLRD
DRAGONWORLD is about a young boy (Jon) who goes to Scotland after the death of his parents. Jon has a hard time adjusting to life in Scotland as he and his granda live in an area where there are not many children his own age. Following a myth he had been told, he goes to a magical site and wishes for a friend. The Scottish fairies grant his wish by giving him a young dragon as a friend, whom he decides to name Yowler.
Time passes and the two grow up together. Ten years later, Jon's granda has passed away, and he is faced with the fact that he is not going to be able to keep his family's castle/manor. A developer and his daughter come to buy the land, when they see Yowler. The developer offers to pay Jon to show Yowler at a type of amusement park. Since he is desperate for money, Jon agrees so long as Yowler is treated well. However, Yowler is not treated well, so Jon and the developer's daughter, who have paired up romantically, set out to save him. Once back in Scotland, with the amusement park people on their tail, Jon tells Yowler to go away. With no dragon, the amusement park people are forced to leave, but Yowler is also gone, under the impression that Jon no longer loves him. Yet in the in end, after their first child is born, Yowler returns. So it ends happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Highlander speaks out.
Dragonworld is more than a cute little movie. The background shots made me want to return home to Glencoe. I have purchased the movie and shared it with my friends. Of course I am just
learning people are very intrested in the ways of the Scots.
Dragonworld is a great way to start. At the end of the movie I
watched the extra footage and they were talking of a second one.
I do hope it comes about and [that thsy] will let me know so I can
get my order in first.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great movie!!!
I saw Dragonworld when I was little. I still love it even though I have not seen it in years. It's about an american boy who's parents die so he has to move to scotland with his widowed grandfather. He is very lonely so he wishes for a friend and then he meets a dragon whom he names Yowler. They become best friends. Then they grow up and a developer and his daugher come to scotland. The boy, John, falls in love with the daughter and consents to send Yowler to a "better place," a park called Dragonworld. But Yowler is mistreated so John and the girl, beth set out to save Yowler. THis movie is great! I would recommend it for all ages.

a wonderful movie....sorry that I can't get a copy as it is not being available right now....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Family Movie
I thought the cinematography of the the beautiful English countrysides were visually stunning. The cherub faced, talented young actor Courtland Mead was spellbinding to my children and my husband and I alike. The baby dragons relationship with the young Mead is heartwarming. This movie is touching, funny, heartwarming, and the latter part of the movie is filled with light suspense, adventure, and good action scenes. ... Read more

Sometimes a B movie can rise above its big-budget brethren. The Siege of Firebase Gloria is a lean, straightforward film about a troupe of Marines defending an isolated outpost in Vietnam. While on reconnaissance, Sergeant-Major Hafner (R. Lee Ermey) gets a glimmering of the impending Tet offensive when he comes across a massacred village. When the patrol arrives at Firebase Gloria, Hafner takes command from the addled commanding officer and desperately tries to prepare the disorganized base for the coming assault. There's nothing remarkable about the story--this is a war movie--but it's not only told with efficient skill, it's strikingly clear-eyed about the brutalities committed by both sides of the war. The Viet Cong are depicted with as much sympathy as the Americans; in fact, through smart juxtapositions, the perspective of the native soldiers becomes increasingly clear and compelling, even though their dialogue is never translated. With clearly drawn yet realistic characters, a decent script, and unfancy but effective camerawork, Firebase Gloria paints a more vivid and unsettling portrait of the Vietnam experience than far more high-minded movies like Full Metal Jacket. Ermey gives a grounded, genuine performance, and straight-to-video star Wings Hauser is both scary and sad as a ruthless, alienated corporal. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars WHY ISN'T IT ON DVD
I would rate it as a five if the whole TV mini-series made it on the tape. It was a very well done, made for TV movie. Bette Davis is excellent, but then isn't she always great. Rosanne Arquette was young, but gave a very good performance; So did the actors who played Nick Constantine and Worthy Pettinger. Worth producing on DVD with commentary by the author of the book, director and the living actors and actresses. Ask them what it was like to work with Bette Davis.

The evil role Davis played in "Harvest Home" was as good as her performance on "What Every Happened to Baby Jane?"

Everytime I travel to Maine I can picture the harvest home festival. Makes you a little afraid of those New Englanders and the secrets they may hold. If you liked Harvest Home you may also want to buy Dead and Buried with Jack Albertson and James Firorentino. Another New England chiller, alot like something Stephen King would write. (Reminds me of Monhegan Island, Maine "Spooky")

Don't buy Harvest Home on tape demand a full DVD Version.

NEED THE WHOLE THING ON DVD NOT JUST PARTS.

2-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A FIVE STARS MINI SERIE
I purchased the VHS version and was extremely disappointed by the extensive cuts performed on the tape. Where is the Worthy story, he is an integral part of the story....what was left was
not worth watching. I only watched the tape once, when I received it. Bring the entire story on DVD

3-0 out of 5 stars DARK SECRET OF HARVEST HOME
DISAPPOINTED IN THE SOUTH
I cannot begin to explain how disappointed I was with the VHS of this movie that I purchased for too much money then to realize that I did not have the entire miniseries. Please put this movie on DVD so many people would like to see the whole thing as it was shown on TV originally. All in all I loved the movie but if someone is seeing it for the first time an they've already been told about it. It really can't be appreciated with the hachet job thats been done on it. Entire miniseries On DVD PLEASE!!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Give us the FULL SERIES on DVD!!!
Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of outrage at the hatchet job that was done to this VHS release of this classic horror TV mini-series.

I really hope somebody out there in DVD-makerland pays attention and hears that there are many people out here waiting for this to come out (uncut, with the picture cleaned up and remastered) on DVD.

And while you're at it, how about the TV mini-series of Stephen King's "The Shining", another exceptional TV effort that definitely merits DVD release.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE DVD OF THIS CLASSIC TV MINI-SERIES?
I remember watching this on tv when it first came out, and later reading the book. Excellent adaptation of a very creepy and disturbing story, kinda along the lines of The Wicker Man. Have been patiently (not) waiting for the whole mini-series to be released on DVD, and not a chopped up version that is almost impossible to find on vhs that is overpriced! PLEASE, I IMPLORE SOMEONE TO FINALLY RELEASE MOVIES THAT ARE REALLY ENTERTAINING AND MAKE YOU FEEL SOMETHING, AND NOT JUST THE SAME MOVIES RELEASED IN SPECIAL VERSIONS, EXTRA LONG VERSIONS, SUPERBIT VERSIONS, DIRECTORS VERSIONS, ETC. Veteran director Martin Ritt (Sounder) directed this earnest and very popular tale of a naive textile worker, widow, and mother in the U.S. South who becomes empowered by standing up for her rights in the workplace. Sally Field stars in the Oscar-winning title role as a woman who has been content to go along with the status quo until she realizes that she is entitled to more and can succeed if she stands up for herself. Her fight to improve deplorable working conditions at the textile plant causes a rift between her and the people closest to her, but her determination brings a new awareness to her and to all the women with whom she works. Ritt's typical, socially conscious story uses the politics of Norma Rae's struggle and also its emotions to build the film to a rousing climax. --Robert Lane ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful movie
I agree with the reviewer below who said this film is a wonderful love story. I developed a huge crush on Ron Leibman's character about five minutes after he is introduced.
This is a powerful film in many ways, and the subtle love story is just one of them.
Norma Rae is a movie that speaks to me because my family worked in mills for many years. My grandparents, uncle and mom all went through a local mill (no longer in existance) at some point in their lives. I remember the hard conditions and the sight of the real mill workers from Opelika walking across the screen hit home for me. I cried during several parts and I felt like Norma's daddy was my own grandfather. I admire the people who made this film. It is truly a hidden treasure because it isn't flashy, it is simple, straightforward and true to life. And if Ron is out there anywhere reading this, please believe me when I say you truly brought Ruben to life and made him a wonderful hero to me. Sally Field was a hero as well, one that makes you love her and who cares about the flaws.
Please watch this movie. It will make you think. It will make you grateful. It will make you cry in sadness and joy.
My only complaint is, gee I would have tried to at least KISS Ruben at some point. Ladies, watch the last scene and see if you don't agree with me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Rae of Hope
Sally Field gives a career turning performance in 1979's Norma Rae. Up to that point, Ms. Field was better known as a TV actress who starred in fluffy comedies like Gidget, The Flying Nun & The Girl With Something Extra. In 1976, she showed a more serious side, taking home an Emmy for her work as a young girl with multiple personalities in Sybil. After Sybil, she proceeded to star in more fluff pieces like Smokey & The Bandit, Hooper & The End with her then boyfriend Burt Reynolds. Norma Rae was a film with much more substance. In fact after reading the script, Mr. Reynolds advised her that she would win an Oscar for the film. He turned out to be quite prophetic. Ms. Field is superb in the title role. Norma is an unassuming factory worker from a small town in the South, who is widowed and has two kids with two separate fathers. That is until she meets Reuben Warshawky (Ron Liebman). Reuben is an Union organizer from New York City and he is trying to get the mill workers to set up a union. Most people ignore as they are fearful for their jobs, but Norma is intrigued and she starts meeting with Reuben to try and start a union. She is met with resistance and is bullied by her bosses, but Norma is not persuaded to quit. She feels that she has stood by her whole life without making a difference and this is her chance to actually matter. There is of course the famous scene where Norma is about to be removed from the mill and she defiantly stands on a table with the Union sign. Her co-workers one by one realize the chances she's taken for them and they shut off their machines in support. The film has some excellent supporting work from Mr. Liebman, Beau Bridges and Pat Hingle, but this is Ms. Field's film all the way. She proved Mr. Reynolds right and took home the 1979 Best Actress Oscar and set forth on a path that would add another Oscar to her collection and feature some of the best films of 1980's & 1990's.

4-0 out of 5 stars A textbook example of how to organize in your workplace!!
I finally got the chance to watch this movie after missing out for almost 20 years. I should have watched this film years ago. Not only is Sally Field's acting great, but the screenplay was just as great as well. My only problem was the length of the movie as I thought 20 minutes could have been chopped off. With that said, this movie should be mandatory watching for all workers. If you care about the conditions in your workplace, watch it and learn how to organize your workplace!! It's a film much needed for required viewing in our society today!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the 10 Best Performances by an Actress Ever!!!
"Norma Rae" contains the thrilling performance by Sally Field as a woman on the wrong side of the tracks of life who decides it's time to stand up for the rights of her co-workers at a small textile plant.

She is offered and accepts a promotion when the plant's management tries to divert her, but a supervisory role doesn't appeal to her when her mother loses her hearing and she has to chastise her father for poor performance. Logically, inevitably she becomes more committed to fighting for a better life for herself and her loved ones and joins forces with a union organizer who came down from NYC. She ends up sacrificing all, including her self esteem, to give the workers more control over their working conditions.

Chills ran down my spine during the scene where she held up the "union" sign and another where she rebuked her husband for being non-supportive of her union efforts. I am not a union supporter, but I know good drama, strong performances, and a logical and interesting plot when I see it, so I recommend this fine film to all.

Hopefully they will give as much time and attention to dubbing and subtitling this movie into languages of third world countries because that's where this textile plant probably relocated a year after the events this film portrayed. A sad, sad outcome to an ideal.

No matter what the outcome, Sally Field delivers one of the finest performances in film history so "Norma Rae" gets only my highest recommendations!

5-0 out of 5 stars TWO THUMBS UP! FIVE STARS OF EXCELLENCE!!!!
This movie is definitely a monster of a hit. Sally Field was great playing the single mother who wouldn't let unsafe conditions go undetected. This movie was Oscar material. It was strong, smart, and very uplifting. I like the part when she had the black men in the meeting and she told her husband played by Jeff Bridges that "they didn't give me a hard time". Whatever you say about it, but it's AWESOME! 10+ ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hatfields & the McCoys truth be told
The last review I read on the movie I found to be helpful because I was debating on buying this film. I just recently read an exstensive article on the famous feud that shed a little light on the subject. For all these years all I knew was what was refered to as the "yellow journalist view". I decided not to purchase the movie because if I watch anything I want it to be factual. If anyone knows of a dvd, vhs or book that is fact-filled, I'd be grateful if you would post that information so I can get the real historical story. Thank you in advance = )

3-0 out of 5 stars Unrealized Potential
I snapped up a used copy of this movie at the local flea market and couldn't wait to watch it. Having bought, viewed and enjoyed Sounder, Where the Lilies Bloom, Dollmaker, etc. I was eager to add this Southern drama to my collection. However, it paled in comparison to these classics. I was lost within the first 8 minutes of the film, but it really didn't matter due to the poor script, poor acting, poor score and poor cinematography. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Feud Movie!!!
Clyde Wares Movie "The Hatfields and The McCoys" is a vivid and excellent portrayal of the two fighting, feuding families on the West Virginia and Kentucky sides.Jack Palance does a superb acting job in this film.Wonderful!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the Real McCoy
Although there is some good characterizations of the leaders of both families, the film doesn't really tell the truth of what happened. As the 3x great grandson of Randall McCoy (played by Steve Forrest) I hope a movie will one day come out that shows the feud in an accurate way. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Drivel
As a tribute to the ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS (1959-1961) and THE BULLWINKLE SHOW (1961-1964) television series, David Thomas and Sally Kellerman star respectively as BORIS AND NATASHA, the two inept East European spies appearing in the original cartoon animation as adversaries of Bullwinkle and the squirrel. (Yeah, ok, even "old time" TV wasn't necessarily scintillating.)

In B&N, Pottsylvania's despotic Fearless Leader (Christopher Neame) orders our two heroes to infiltrate America in order to track down a fugitive scientist, who's developed a microchip that can reverse time. Once in the U.S., Natasha is "discovered" by hair stylist Jose (Jose Eber), who makes Natasha a media star. Only Boris, troubled by his partner's loss of focus and dedication, keeps the assignment on track.

There are a few decent sight gags, e.g. Boris and Natasha in fat suit disguises and John Travolta in a fleeting cameo. For me, however, the best feature of the film is long-legged Sally Kellerman, who manages to be sexy in a ditzy sort of way. But otherwise, the storyline is drivel. Even a 5-minute scene that includes John Candy as retired Pottsylvania super agent Kallishak, who now has a shoe-shine stand in the Big Apple, adds nothing.

Only die-hard fans of the original small screen adventures may find this movie entertaining. Having said that, where are Dudley Do-Right and Snidely Whiplash when you need them? (Daniel Day-Lewis would make a great Whiplash!)

5-0 out of 5 stars GET THAT CHIP BORIS & NATASHA !!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful parody of 60's beach movies. Great fun!
For anyone who has sat through the mindless Frankie and Annette beach movies this is a real treat! In retrospect, the original movies are fun time capsules of the early sixties and this film trashes them all. Frankie and Annette are back as a married couple with children returning to their old beach for a vacation. The plot is the same lame one used in every beach movie (surfers vs. punks, jealous girlfriends, boy loses girl, boy gets girl, etc...) and there are numerous cameos throughout the film (Alan Hale, Bob Denver, the Cleavers, Peewee Herman, and many others). Connie Stevens is Great, and everyone looks like they had a blast making this film. Anyone who has any love for the old beach movies will really enjoy the self-parody of "Back to the Beach".

4-0 out of 5 stars For those who hated beach movies, I loved this one
I absolutely refused to watch this movie in the theatres, or on video. A friend asked if I had seen it and I responded 'I hated the beach movies." He responded, "so did the people who made this movie, you'll enjoy it." I watched it, I loved it, I still love it! It's sarcastic, which I believe, is why a lot of people don't "get it." Great sarcasm, great cast (who better to make fun of themselves?) and great Frankie Avalon and Dick Dale surf music. Everything that was great about the surf movies (music)and everything that was terrible, made with fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much funnier than platoon
There are quite a few people proclaiming this the worst movie ever made.
They're wrong.
This movie was so funny that I had to be rushed to the hospital for emergency intestinal repair surgery when it ended.
This movie may be the answer you seek, even if the question is about dry cleaning. See this movie.
Buy it, rent it, do something. We must save this before "they" ban it. It's an important piece of cinema, and a work of art.
Most importantly, Salvador Dali loved this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ska, ska, ska
I grew up watching this movie. I looked forward to watching it each summer. BACK TO THE BEACH pokes fun at it's two lead stars - Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello (who produced this film). This is part of the hilarity of this film. It spoofs the beach films for which the stars are famous for. This would be Annette Funicello's last theatrical release before her multiples sclurosis sets in. She has the greater parts in this movie. One highlight in the song "Jamaica Ska" for which she sings and dances. What you have to remember is that all the cheesy dialogue and lame jokes are intentional. Remember this and the movie will put a stitch in your side from laughing so much. So in the spirit of this movie I'll say - Dude, you totally gotta see this rituous movie. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Movie!
I had seen California Dreaming on cable several times in the 70's and 80's and I think it's a pretty good movie. Dennis Christopher plays a young man from Chicago who moves to California and feeling lonely and out of his elements he is befriended by a bar owner who lets him move in with him and his daughter at their beach house. The daughter played by Glynnis O'Connor thinks he's a boring nerd but he tries to impress her and her surfer friends some who aren't very nice people. This is a good movie but at times a little too soap operish but I do recommend it though because even with moments that are a little too soap operish it's a pretty good movie and the actors are all very good and it's a shame that California Dreaming is hardly ever shown on cable anymore and I'm surprised that this movie isn't on DVD yet! BTW: There was a sitcom on cable TV in the 90's about teenagers that I think might have also been titled California Dreaming but this movie and that sitcom are completely different and the sitcom had nothing to do with this movie!

4-0 out of 5 stars Midwest dreamer learns to surf, love and finds truth hurts!
Dennis Christoper travels west to find himself after his brother dies just after cutting his first jazz/blues record. He ends up in a surf 60's world that might as well be the moon...as he is really out of place and feels lost and totally alone. Enter a over-the-hill bar owner who still carries a torch for his ex-wife,he takes the boy in over the protests of his daughter. This begins a relearning period of mistakes and absolute blunders until he finally gets the girl and looses the father figure to an unexpected heart attack without being able to say he was sorry for doubting his success in the Olympics. The film is twisted with good and bad surfers, poor little rich girls and pott heads along with beach vollyball at it's roots. I recommend seeing this film as it is funny and I left alot out because there is so many goings-on as "California Dreaming" spins a comedy into several different stories...if you love to remember you'll want to buy and watch this movie of a Funny Beach "Peton Place" over and over ! ...

3-0 out of 5 stars HA HA HA !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Critters 3: You Are What They Eat
This is a classic cheesy horror movie. The acting is okay, I'm sure a lot of people watched it for Leonardo DiCaprio's character. There is also another familiar character in this movie, Charlie. The Critters (crites) didn't look fake - okay well when watching up close you could tell their nails were fake (They would bend) and also you could see the hair was fake. I mean it's not like they can go out and capture a real Crite.

They looked the same as the second movie - I don't see what the difference was, but doesn't matter. I still love this movie. It wasn't a favorite, but it was still good.

2-0 out of 5 stars not good like the first two
As you may know there are some B movies that consist of pointless sequels. There are also B movies that after a sequel, the series takes a nose dive. This is the category that Critters 3 falls into. First off, I realize that B movies are not to be taken serious to some degree but this movie went over the boundary line in that department. Critters 3 takes a break from the plot of the first two (Superman 3, anyone?) but that doesn't ruin the movie. In fact, the only returning character is Charlie. And folks, if you want to see this movie just because Leo Decaprio is in it then you are making a mistake. His acting is not enough to save this film. Anyway, one viewer pointed out some obvious plot holes such as Charlie becoming sheriff at the end of Critters 2 which is completely ignored in this movie. Come to think of it, I don't think Critters 3 even took place in Grover's Bend, Kansas (the same as the first two). Also, there were some critter eggs that just happen to appear under a man's truck that are unknowingly taken to an appartment complex in which later on the critters start to wreck havoc all over the place. Critters finishes with a "to be continued" ending. Critters 3 & 4 were filmed back to back just incase anyone was wondering though make no mistake... you really don't have to see this movie to understand what is happening in Crittes 4. Yes, that's right. As far as I'm concerend it would be better to go on to Critters 4 after watching Critters 2. Critters 3 is a direct-to-video film and for those who still want to see it, you will find out why.

3-0 out of 5 stars Critter s 3 tame but still dangerous
Fist the terrorized a farm. then they over ran the town of Grovers Bend. Now they have moved up into an apartment. This was and okay film. It was not as good as the first to. Don Opper retuns as charlie. This has the less gore of the 4th movies. A very low death count only 2 people die in this one.

Things I like the cystal Charle gives the boy glows when there in danger. Lenoard De Caprio looks interesting in this film. This porbably was his first movie to star in. Not as successfull as the other films he wasin but still pretty good.

Just like in critter 1 ans 2 the krites apperance has been altered. It has some fun parts in it. There is this part is really fun when Josh Lenadord Dicapro goes with his father to evict the people living in the apartment.

After he shuts of the power he hears the sound of a televesion. He goes to investigate. This part of the movie I think wassupposed to be a rip of off the part in Gremlins when the Gremlins are watching Snow white. The Krites are watching a thing one a batter powered t.v about how to pre pare chicken.

It get real intense near the end especial when the apart catchs one fire. The fire is caused by one of the Krites that died by shallowing a flare. This is similiar to a gag that was in the first one where one of the Krites swallows a lit fire cracker.

The little boy I adormal. At the end of the movie the dad and grows real cllose tohis shown and daughter. They apolize for they way they have treated each other. Pretty good movie.

Here what they could have done tomkae it better. Gaving Charlie a larger rule, put more gore in it. Brought bradly brown back again have put ug in it. Ug you do not see again until the last one or credits of 3 if you choose to watch them. I will and alway will like critters. I own all four on VHS.

I am planning of buying them on DVD so I can watch them more frequently. Crittes series is great but Vhs were out real quickly if you watch then alot. I will and always will like critters.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK movie, but starts the downfall for the critter series.
Ok, first off let me just start off by saying there is a whole lot more to this movie than Leonardo DiCaprio, infact, I am ashamed to own this movie because he is in it, anyways this movie is pretty good if you like the critter series, its even a bit scary at times. The only reason why i don't like this movie is because it just doesn't follow the rest of them. but if you like the critter series go for this movie! it really isn't all that bad!

2-0 out of 5 stars The ok Critter movie!
Critters 3 I thought wasnt as good as they said because they didnt do some real action. When I frist saw the movie it was the first critters movie I saw so I thought it was pretty good, but when I got 1,2,and 4 I didnt think it was that good of a Critters movie.Besides what happened when Charlie got the Cherif duty in the secound one and he's not the Cherif of Groversbend in the third? When Charlie gave that kid a crystal and it would glow if there was trouble and it didnt when there wasnt , that was like something that didnt even need to be in the movie.Afterall I guess it is an ok critters movie but some things I just think are just plain stupid. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Sad but Very Good Movie!
I remember watching The Boy in the Plastic Bubble when it first aired on TV when I was 11 years old and I thought it was a very good movie and John Travolta was terrific as teenager Tod Lubitch who was born with a nonworking immune system that forces him to live in a plastic isloation chamber away from germs which are extremely dangerous for him! The movie also stars Robert Reed and Diana Hyland as Tod's parents and Glynnis O'Connor as the girl who lives next door and they are all pretty good though John Travolta and Glynnis O'Connor got much more screen time. This movie is pretty sad but it's a good movie and I highly recommend it. I taped this movie when it was rerun commercial free on cable but it was taped on a VCR that was old and breaking down so the tape is messed up and I would like to buy the DVD which is unfortunately out of print but I will have to think of ordering a used copy!

3-0 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD FOR A TV MOVIE.
I actually enjoyed "The Boy In The Plastic Bubble" more than I thought I would. After all, it has been the topic of many jokes over the years. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it had some very nice human elements to it. John Travolta did a pretty good job of playing Tod, a teenager with a severe immune deficiency who is forced to live in an enclosed germ free area in his house. He spent a lot of the film acting rather goofy and socially inept. That made a lot of sense though for someone who had limited contact with the general public.

Tod has spent many years watching the teenage girl next door, Gina (Glynnis O'Connor). He is extremely attracted to her but whether she feels the same way about him is questionable. Eventually, Tod is able to go through a series of steps which allow him more and more freedom. He uses this new found freedom to both try and fit in with the other kids as best he can and also woo Gina. There are some touching moments between the two of them although at times it crosses over into being too cut and dry. I would've liked the filmmakers to have made the situation between them a bit more complex.

Robert Reed and Diana Hyland, who play Tod's parents, are given less screen time than one might think. The real story here is about Tod's dreams of one day being "normal" and falling in love with Gina. His relationship with his parents is very secondary. Oddly, Hyland won an Emmy for her performance even though she didn't get a chance to exhibit any real emotion or acting skill.

"The Boy In The Plastic Bubble" doesn't know if it wants to be more of a romance or a medical drama. It ends up doing both fairly well and is worth the buy at such a low price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Movie
I first saw this movie when i was a kid, and i loved it because the kids in the movie were around my age. Now as an adult i still love it because John Travolta portrays the character so tenderly. The innocence and "corniness" makes this film truly endearing. i have done an internet search on the real Todd Lubitch, to see if he survived outside his bubble. anyone has any info, please contact me. hollywoodchik@hotmail.com

3-0 out of 5 stars The importance of this early example.
In this film that predates AIDS, there is an important insight that somehow never carried over into HIV and AIDS discourse. The teenager with the severely compromised immune system was not enclosed to protect us from him, but to protect him from us. Although this move did not portray an infectious agent but a genetic problem, it is an important reminder. In all the paranoid constructions associated with AIDS in America, we seem to have collectively forgotten the simple reality that people who are sick need care. A culture is judged by the way it treats its young, its old, and its sick. Our culture is more concerned with money than real morality, and the so-called religious right is anything but. This film should be revived, even if only for that one insight.

"These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don't cry baby don't cry
Don't cry" -Paul Simon, "The Boy in the Bubble"

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie!!!
To start things off I will watch it over and over. John Travolta is a wonderful actor and portrayed the story of this boy wonderfully. It is very sad how he had to live so isolated in this plastic housing just so he could survive. It was kinda sad how the girl next door took him for granted but finally came to what I think love him. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. I wish they would have said whatever happened to him, or how he's doing or something. What became of him after he came out of the bubble. I think the ending isn't fair since it left me questioning. But like I said I will watch it over and over. : ) ... Read more
