5-0 out of 5 stars Despite what the other critics say...
I'd call this one of the better Young Indy films. It's fun, it's interesting, and it was neat to see Indy do some wild stunts again. Certain scenes were very reminiscent of the car chases in Raiders. It's always nice when Young Indy acts a lot more like grown Indy. I for one did not like the female lead, her attitude towards men mainly. I thought she was way too silly for Indy to be so stuck on her for so long. Her insistance on not committing to a relationship was really annoying. Hey, I've known girls like that. I have to admit that I understood Indy's feelings. Sometimes it's hard to break it off with a girl that hot, even if she mistreats the heck out of you. Still, she really ticked me off. Anyway, the movie itself is a nice change from the seriousness of most of the others, and frankly, I thought it was pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably reflects Lucas's dislike to big studios
Yep, although he doesn't mention it, it shows clearly his bad memories of his youthful filmmaking; like the other chapters I've reviewed, this one also is very inmersive and shows how dangerous was to shoot a film at that time (well it's still so, but not THAT dangerous), yes I do agree with other reviewers about that it doesn't has lot of action, but it still has many comic situations that are worth to see, and it is at the height of the other chapters.

3-0 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones and the Hollywood Budget
This film, while all about budget, seems to suffer from just that. Don't get me wrong, it's a great addition to the wonderful Young Indy series, and the heroine, Claire, is captivating, but the plot is all over the map and it has virtually no action. For a better Indy episode that doesn't rely on action, check out Mystery of the Blues... it's brilliant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lucas' "Follies" saved by Flanery's Indy
As with all the adventures in this series, there are two criteria for review. One is how well Indiana Jones is characterized and the other is how well the history-lesson-of-the-week is portrayed. Throughout the majority of the series, at least the history bit is dramatized so well that we can forgive liberties taken with Indy's character.

Here, though, the liberties taken are so great that, although there are some fascinating character development moments, the weakness of plot premise prevents us from getting lost in the story. It is simply too fantastic a leap of faith to believe that Indiana Jones would somehow get involved with Hollywood's nascent film industry. Worse, even if one could forgive Indy's presence in Hollywood, the historical figures he meets are far too conveniently placed in the plot for us to revel in their discovery. On the other hand, the Indy on display here is very much Indiana Jones. There is a level of resourcefulness and cunning which sometimes makes us think we're watching Ford, not Flanery.

At once this film suffers from the series' worst quality (implausibly putting Indy at George Lucas' historical mercy) and benefits from its best (giving Flanery some moments to show us the glint in Harrison Ford's eye).

Thus, though the premise of the story is deeply flawed, we do care about the relationships Indy forges here. The entire first hour is very much foreshadowing for his relationship with Belloch (and other rogue archaeologists) from the theatrical film series. Likewise, the untenable romantic relationship lays the groundwork for the Professor Jones we see in "Raiders": a man who would probably like to commit to a woman, but who can't quite seem to get there because the kind of woman he likes has a very full plate herself.

Overall then, the film lives up to its full title. It is very much about both "Hollywood Follies" and "Young Indiana Jones". ... Read more

I saw this movie when it came out on HBO 8 years ago, I really enjoyed it. 2-0 out of 5 stars Matheson keeps this one alive
Sheedy is the victim here and Matheson from the first one talks to her but then in the middle I think around there, Matheson dies in a grave and then Sheedy's husband trys to kill her but then it ends up being him who she kills along with his woman hes seeing on the side. the first is better is all I have to say.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dont ya hate the cover
makes it look like a horror movie or something. Its a great movie. Woman get buried alive by her husband because he wants out of the marriage but he wouldnt get anything out of it. hes cheating on her. he figures if his wife dies then he gets the money and so he has her buried alive saying to embalm her twice to see that shes dead which obviously doesnt happen because the movie is called "buried alive" and not "embalmed alive". well wifey wakes up and comes back to give her boy what he deserves. great movie. i woulda watched it sooner but the movie was put out to be a horror when actually its not.. its kind of a drama suspense thing. not even much violence really..

3-0 out of 5 stars Coincidences Lead The Way To Death.
'Buried Alive' is not a movie about zombies. In fact it holds a degree of realism. It's about a woman, who gets poisoned by her husband and buried in the cemetary when she's still alive. Of course, people don't know this. Her husband's motive is to get the money she received as heritage and move away with his mistress. To ensure that she doesn't get out of the graveyard, he asks that his wife is mummified twice. However, things don't work out as they should; and she's put into the coffin without being mummified at all. With a few more coincidences, she will make her way out somehow; and, it will be her revenge when she arrives home and sees her husband with his mistress.

If you're seeking for a movie at nighttime with your friends, and you want it to be a little scary, 'Buried Alive 2' is not a bad choice at all. However, you have to keep in mind that the movie is not very long.

5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing movie
Don't be fooled by this movie's virtually unknown status. It is amazing. The plot is stunning, and it leaves you with an awesome sense of good & evil. I have not seen the first one, and you definitely don't need to to understand everything that goes on. This movie also strikes me as an allegory of sorts. The wife is an almost Messianic figure, and the final scene pictures hell better than any other movie I have ever scene. The ending will send chills up and down your spine.

Truly a remarkable film.

3-0 out of 5 stars This was more funny rather than suspensful
This is the sequel to the first. I won't give away too much, but Tim Matheson's character comes back and finds the sheriff passed away and the sheriff's niece(his only surviving relative) who's an old friend of Tim's character. She's in a partly loveless marriage. She wants to make it work and her husband doesn't.Tim warns her if the marriage isn't working to get out of it. She doesn't listen. She get's what Tim got in the first movie and comes back for her revenge. There is more involvement in the goings on of the town and the revenge moves almost exactly like in the first Buried Alive and there are a lot of funny moments with the husband and his mistress.I still like the first one better. ... The late director Norman Rene and writer Craig Lucas made a pretty fine creative team on the stage and in the movies, and this 1990 drama about the evolving impact of AIDS on gay New Yorkers is their best cinematic achievement. The ensemble story follows the lives of nine or so characters as word of the so-called "gay cancer" eventually becomes a real force, killing several of them as the years go by. The film works well on a number of levels, not least of which is the enviable closeness of the characters, the script's wit, the bittersweet experience of loss, and a celebratory attitude at the end mixing wisdom with defiance. --Tom Keogh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic FINALLY back in print! :)
I've been lucky enough to view an advance promotional copy of MGM Home Entertainment's brand new dvd version of the classic AIDS themed film, "Longtime Companion."

Well, I have to say this film has never had such clear sound and beautiful picture quality. The Letterbox transfer is perfect and the Stereo is VERY nicely done. We watched it on a very large, THX system and the sound was channeled very well.

I have to give many votes of praise to MGM for re-releasing this wonderful title that was out of print for much of the 90's. I can't say how happy I am to see a quality, letter-box release of this movie! It's about time!! :)

So, PLEASE, don't waste another dime of your money paying for the poor quality, out-of-print version Vidmark released of this in 1990. I know you're gonna have to wait until January for the official release of this dvd, but, believe me it's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking movie about AIDS
As a serious attempt to dramatize the AIDS crisis by showing its impact on a small group of friends, "Longtime Companion" holds up well. The limitations evident when the movie debuted are still there: yes, the men (with the obligatory wise-cracking straight female friend) are all rich yuppies, and they're all white. They seem to exist on their own without any family members--though perhaps this is realistic; many gays and lesbians are indeed estranged from close relatives. More seriously, the omission of the latest news available then about the HIV virus and how safer sex could reduce transmission makes the health picture appear more dark than it in fact was, even in 1990.

Ultimately none of this lessens the emotional impact of the intertwined stories of these characters, due to a quality script and superb acting. There are scenes that overwhelm even now with their power and truth, notably that of Bruce Davison gently helping his lover Mark Lamos let go of life, and the conclusion, that slips momentarily into fantasy in a most moving way. The promiscuous gay lifestyle is given its due, but so are stable, long-term relationships. One wonders why the careers of actors such as Campbell Scott and Dermot Mulroney have not taken off further than they have--hopefully it's not because they had the artistic courage to portray open, fully-rounded and attractive gay men.

"Longtime Companion" still stands out as a carefully produced, well-written and non-judgmental portrayal of people coping with one of the darkest periods of modern American history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dark and Light
This drama is filled with possitive messages but has a darkness to it that will make you angry, in a productive way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Relevent
This moview will make you laugh and cry. It show that love and care that a group can give.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant handling of a subject few understand.
I had seen Longtime Companion in it's first release, and, ironically, have received it as part of my home collection from a friend who passed from the disease.

My assessment of a great film is that it makes you relate to a world that is completely foreign to you. Being a straight woman with a circle of gay, male friends, this was not a subject I was unfamilliar with. I have, however, screened this film for several friends who weren't so familliar with gay culture and the issues that surround it. They were astounded at how powerfully this film conveyed the lifestyle and terror in a way that never bordered on melodrama.

There are two scenes that are gripping, one of which comes near the end and I won't destroy it's intent by revealing it here. The first scene that will just leave you numb is Bruce Davison's character at his lover's side urging him to 'just rest,' as he essentially begs him to die. It is quietly and poigniantly stoic and will break your heart. Davison's Oscar nod for this performance was WELL deserved.

This is a movie that requires an open mind, but if you are looking for a film that will give you an enlightening view of a lifestyle you don't live, this is a great film for you and will not disappoint. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Baseball Flick
Yes, I know it's not 100% accurate and whatnot but it's still a great movie. I think this movie goes best with HBO's DVD bio on Babe Ruth.

My only gripe about this movie is that it's been a decade now and it's not on DVD yet! Tell Universal to wake up!

1-0 out of 5 stars How about a movie called...
How about if the film industry makes a movie called 'The Hammer'? Gee, they made 'Cobb, 'The Babe', 'Eight Men Out', 'Field of Dreams', 'The Pride of the Yankees', 'The Natural', and '61*'. Well, how about making a movie about Henry Aaron, Josh Gibson, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, or even Jackie Robinson? Oh, I forgot, baseball will never allow it...

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine well made film, which is Based on a True Story.
When he was a Orphan as a Child named Babe Ruth, he discover his hidden talent for the love of Baseball. When he turned Adult (John Goodman), he become unexpectedly a Baseball Legend.

In this film, which is surprisngly well made:an old-fashioned Hollywood-Style Bio-Pic. John Goodman hit a home run as Babe Ruth with his Amazing Performance. This movie has its grit and seeming no-holds-barred honesty. A memorable film, based on a True Fact. Directed by Arthur Hiller (Taking Care of Business). Grade:B+.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reviewer Jeff Smith Nailed It
Jeff's review says it all about this movie. I thought it was well done in spite of some inaccuracies. But as John Goodman said when interviewed about it: "It's a movie, get a life".

1-0 out of 5 stars The Babe
The biggest joke for a baseball movie that I ever wittnessed. When they have Babe Ruth hit an infield fly so high that he rounded the bases i wanted to puke. The Babe must of rolled over in his grave when that was released. That movie is a disgrace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SUSPENSEFUL MOVIE THAT NEVER LETS UP FOR A MINUTE
A RELIGIOUS SERIAL KILLER [JAMES REMAR] IS BOUGHT BACK TO LIFE AS AN ASSASSIN SHORTLY AFTER HIS EXECUTION. HOWEVER, ALL HE CAN THINK ABOUT IS GETTING VENGEANCE ON THE COP THAT CAUGHT HIM [MARIO VAN PEEBLES] AND THE PEOPLE THAT HELPED GET HIM CONVICTED. A VERY SUSPENSEFUL MOVIE THAT NEVER LETS UP. THE ACTING IS GOOD, THE ACTION IS GOOD, AND THE PLOT IS GOOD. I RECCOMEND ACTION FANS TO PICK THIS MOVIE UP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

5-0 out of 5 stars A+ movie
The movie was very good from start to finish. The acting was great, and the movie was full of suspense. Don't let the cheap price fool you. It's worth watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny , Sexy , and Entertaining
this Movie kept me intrested the whole time i watched. Its not much for kids but sure makes me want to go to college.

2-0 out of 5 stars uninspired and forgettable cop vs. killer movie
Blowback follows very well trodden ground. A standard cop vs. serial killer movie, it sticks to the cliches of the genre. The killer's "twist" is that he kills each victim in the style of a martyred saint, with a bible reference in a test tube placed in the mouth. Perhaps the intention is to echo other recent screen psychos like Seven's John Doe or Silence of the Lambs' Buffalo Bill. Blowback's villain is, however, like all the other characters, lacking in character depth and ultimately unconvincing. Mark L. Lester, the director, has been a prolific producer of mediocre action movies, notably Commando and Big Trouble in Little China. Some of these can perhaps survive as late night movies to be watched over a few beers. Still, even among the lesser cop movies, there are a lot that should be seen before this one. Try Fallen or Bone Collector. Regarding the DVD, it's 3:4 format, with no features (not that you'd want them) ... Read more
