5-0 out of 5 stars Plots that move in mysterious ways.
FACE DOWN belongs to that class of mystery-suspense stories whose plot leaves you asking, "How did that guy fit in?" That guy is the REAL killer, but nothing in the movie ties him into the action except him's quick character switch. The fun part of this film is watching the other guy, Joe Mantegna, not-too-skilled private eye, get involved with one hot tomato, blonde client too many. You know the saying in Private Eye films when there's murder: "Cherchez le Private Eye." Mantegna was fingered for murder two which fingered him for murder one and he would have been fingered for a couple more murders, but time ran out; the REAL killer gets . . . heh! I can't give the plot away. See the film. It was entertaining and interesting. It will tell you whether Joe gets the girl. I was going to give this movie only 4**** but I gave it 5 because the dialogue didn't use too many cliches and the casting was definitely on track.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much dialogue..not enough content
Romance movie plus a drama? Nice plot, witty dialogue just short on action. Standouts include a violent bathroom scene involving a talented unknown actor and Ms. Maroney and the evil one played by Adam Ant. Worth a watch

3-0 out of 5 stars so-so mystery movie with far too much dialogue.
For me, there was too much talking and plot to really get into this movie. with a crazy porn lady and a private eye who's "mysteriously" hated by everyone at the police station, one can only suspect that you might need a pillow to withstand this movie. the movie's shining glory, however is the "bad guy" played by adam ant, who is such a good bad guy. it's a shame that his part isn't bigger, but what the heck. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disastrous attempt at satire.
Usually this type of comedy is right up my alley. I tend to like edgy satires of real events or situations. However, this Robert Wuhl ego trip of a movie is superficial and extremely unfunny.

"Open Season" is a film written by Robert Wuhl, directed by Robert Wuhl and has Robert Wuhl as its main star. Too bad he doesn't have the talent to take on all of those roles.

The story is silly and looks as if very little thought went into the details. Supposedly, the mishandling of some television ratings boxes causes them to function improperly. These boxes register that viewers are watching Public Broadcasting instead of the usual network fare. The fact that Public Broadcasting is the number one rated network causes society to become more interested in books, the arts and culture. It also causes a lot of problems at the GPN network, which had previously been number one for nine consecutive seasons. They try and figure out what is going on. Funny concept...huh?

Everyone at the Public Broadcasting station is presented as a bunch of tofu munching, whale saving elitists. Everyone at the GPN network is presented as catering to the lowest common denominator at whatever cost. The targets are too obvious and the jabs made at them seem juvenile.

There was a good idea somewhere in the developmental stage, but the execution is terrible. Perhaps a very funny movie can be made about the little underdogs over at PBS, who try to take the cultural high road at the expense of getting good ratings. However, "Open Season" doesn't give that idea the presentation it deserves. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Jennifer Rubin is no threat to Elle or Naomi
This thriller was made for Canadian TV and only redeemed from the B stockpile by the acting of Peter Outerbridge as a wanna be fashion photographer, and the appearance of Sally Kellerman as the agent for "the beauty" Jennifer Rubin. Rubin is perhaps the most lead-footed model I've ever seen, so it's not unexpected when everyone aroud her begins to be killed, though suicide isn't considered as a motive. While she is attractive, Rubin's acting is so flat and she is so physically stiff that you pray that she will be the next to get it. It's a little like the way Kathleen Turner thought so she was such hot stuff in Body Heat. Here Rubin turns heads in the street even before she starts modeling (in a convenient plot turn), in spiteof her dressing the way Outerbridge describes as if for "Siberian Vogue". Outerbridge is a James Spada look-alike without having Spada's mannerist style and whilst his acting is technically superior to Kellerman's, she outclasses him in star power. Given the best nasty lines, she dresses in male drag to prove the claim that she "swings both ways". Director Paul Lynch's work is barely inspired. He slurps over the horror music and gives us close-ups of ringing telephones, though there is an unintentional laugh in the cat scare shot when it appears that the poor kitty has been thrown into frame to approximate it jumping. At least we are spared the cat from being a victim, or Kellerman's highrise balcony being used for someone to be pushed from. The low point is the music video that Rubin participates in, where she is so inept that even her walking requires a choreographer. It's indicative of Lynch's sensibility that when TV news features footage from the "yet unreleased' clip, what we see is the replica of the take we saw being filmed, but magically edited from different shots. If this genius music video director can produce such material (we also know he's a genius because he's the kind who sits on a moving camera and speaks in a British accent) perhaps the Canadian TV producers should have hired him instead of Lynch to make their film. The revelation of the killer jumps over countless red herrings, and is preposterous, but ironically allows Rubin to finally come to life. ... Read more
