5-0 out of 5 stars I will never forget this movie
I have not seen this movie since it was first aired on TV many years ago, but I will never forget it. It is one of the most moving films I've ever seen, and on my list of favorite movies of all time. (This list includes El Norte, Careful He Might Hear You, The Good Fairy, My Man Godfrey, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Black Orpheus, Dersu Uzala, Notorious, The Shop Around the Corner, Big Lebowski, 12 Angry Men and Whistle Down the Wind, just to give you an idea of my taste.) I wish they would re-release The Dollmaker on DVD, but I'd settle for VHS if I could get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Magic
I'm not sure what year this wonderful film was released and it's hard to believe it's not available on tape yet. The down home charm of this folklike movie has made me actually wear out my old home taped copy after excessive viewing. Jane Fonda's portrayal of this homespun Kentucky mountain woman was absolutely fantastic. It was also good to see Helm on screen again continuing to play his often southern mountain character. These two actors together made quite a team showing us their poor, yet hard working and surviving family during war and less prosperous times in our country. A talented craftswoman and hard working wife that has a somewhat dreamer of a husband that works hard and learns to appreciate the life they already had was all they really needed. Each character, in their own way uses the skills they were given to improve their families lives and survive the times. This movie, as well as, a few select others I can think of, gave me that view into some of past times of people living nickel to nickel, company housing projects, coping with extreme family tragedy, food that is precious to life, hard work that pays off in the end and the importance of family values. I feel like a very fortunate person each time I watch this emotionally moving story. Well worth seeing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dollmaker
This was a wonderful movie and book and I would love to own a copy on DVD. I wonder why some of the best movies seem to take the longest to be done on DVD?

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST TV MOVIE EVER MADE
This is without a doubt the best acting Jane Fonda has ever done. If this movie had been a theatrical release, her performance would have won her an oscar. This is the most moving and beautiful family film I have ever seen. The child actors in this film are amazing beyond words and Helms casting as the husband of Fondas character is perfect. The soundtrack alone I would pay a fortune to own. Lucky for me,I do own a copy of the video and have enjoyed it many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dollmaker...all time great.
I absolutely love this movie and never get tired of watching it. I would really love to own it on DVD. Does anybody know of a place where I could find that?? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars SLEEP...SLEEP...SLEEP
and so our protagonist Tom (Kevin Bacon) slips into a deep hypnotic state, and after he awakens, he starts to "receive" messages from the supernatural. This is the basis for a very scary story which takes place in a close-knit, blue-collarish town where everyone knows their neighbors...but not as well as they think! Bacon's acting is right on the money. I especially liked the supposed blue-collar speak: Aye, how youse doin'? He convincingly acts terrified, confused, & sad...a man on the brink of going looney. Rounding out the cast is the always quirky-yet-attractive Illeana Douglas, down-to-earth sexy Kathryn Erbe as Tom's wife, and playing Tom's son, Jake, Zachary David Cope does a fairly good imitation of the kid from "The Sixth Sense". ( The kid here, you see, has always "received" the same messages!) The director & writer, David Koepp uses a great visual style to move things along, as well as a few neat special FX shots as the supernatural forces come to light. The scene where Tom first goes under hypnosis is very very effective...I almost felt like I was being hypnotized as I wathced...you will too. Thoroughly enjoyable. Great extras. Well worth the price of ownership.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 STARS FOR SCARING ME OUT OF MY WITS!
If you're super cynical, you might view Stir Of Echos as just a trumped up murder mystery with supernatural overtones and some oddly coincidental parallels to the Sixth Sense thrown in; (although I just recently found out who might have been copying whom)! However, if you're honest, you'll have to admit that Stir Of Echos is incredibly suspenseful (definitely Edge Of The Seat stuff!) totally riveting, and far, far CREEPIER than the Sixth Sense! In this movie, (starring Kevin Bacon) the lead character is hypontized on a drunken whim, at a party. Afterwards, he starts experiencing some very bizarre hallucinations as he realizes a "door" to another world has been opened up in his brain! As he desperately tries to get to the bottom of these terrifying images and visions he's seeing, he loses interest in his job, his family; everything! An intriguing plot, that does not disappoint! My opinion? Watch it and view for yourself! (But DON'T watch it alone)!

3-0 out of 5 stars Stir of Ehs
This is not a bad movie. It is reasonably well made, although it has dubiously long sequences of Kevin Bacon searching for power tools and using said power tools w/o any serious tension, as we know exactly what he will find, as does he. Also, the background crime and its perpetrators were too easy to discern halfway through the film, and some variation of the confrontation was obvious 40 minutes into the film. The film has an effective mood, and a couple of jolts...

My problem w/ films like this, and I know there are those of you like me, is this: In horror, in Supernatural horror, the supernatural has to be malevolent and it has to be the threat. If an average human is a greater threat to the protagonist than the ghost--which seems to be the common norm of most modern horror/thrillers (Below, 6th Sense, What Lies Beneath, The Others, 28 Days Later, this)--then it does nothing for me. It's not scary. A ghost trying to warn you or avenge its death isn't scary. Sure, the film may manipulate some jumps out of you w/ quick shots of the practically harmless ghost, but after you've experience the thrills, what remains? Once you know the secret of "The Others", what could possibly be scary about the movie after a second viewing? The Exorcist is still scary, because that movie is about an evil presence out to harm you. The Ring gave me some uneasy nights, I admit, because the threat was evil. The Blair Witch Project, the same thing. There's nothing scary about the ghosts in this, in The Others, in the 6th Sense.

So, if you really enjoyed movies w/ ghosts who are only harmful in their pop-up-out-of-no-where powers, and human conspiracies about failed coverups scare you more, then you'd like this. If, however, it's the vile nature of the beast that keeps you up at night, then you'd feel you had wasted money on this picture.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Movie
Stir of Echoes is a good, supernatural thriller. It's above the other movies nowadays. Bacon is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kevin Bacon? Never seen him so good.
This is a very clever film. I was a bit skeptical both because of it's lack of popularity and the fact that Kevin Bacon is in it. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is this is a great story, it is well put together with many good actors/actresses.

There's not much to say, other than: If you want a good, rare movie pick this. I warn you however that I'm not promising your liking it. Although with the right mindset, anyone can enjoy this film. Just remember: "Don't be afraid." ... Read more

A monster runs amok in a Chicago museum on the very day the institution is holding a glitzy reception. Naturally, the museum bosses want to go ahead with their public relations even as the creature is decapitating victims. Penelope Ann Miller plays a scientist on the run from the critter (which is at times computer generated and reminiscent of the raptors in Jurassic Park), and Tom Sizemore is a cop looking for his cold-blooded (in every sense) killer. Peter Hyams (Timecop) directs, and as always he excels at managing the plastic action at the cost of real feeling and logic. (Much of the story is pretty laughable.) --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Scary but too scientific
A great premise, and a great location for a story, in a museum, but this film suffers from an abundance of technobabble in its plot. Basically, there is a monster at large in a museum, and the stars (Tom Sizemore & Penelope Ann Miller) have to catch and kill it. The trouble is, this thing is big, fast and with an insatiable appetite for human glands. Peter Hyams (End of Days, 2010:The Year we make Contact) creates a huge amount of tension by shooting most of this film in the dark, using only minimal lighting. When the creature attacks, and is eventually revealed, it is a truly frightening sight. But the thing that stopped me giving this film five stars was the lack of true characterisation, and the amount of scientific gobbledygook spouted to explain the existence of this creature. Otherwise, a true thriller for lovers of the creature feature. The DVD i got was not exactly packed with features; all i could find was the trailer. Sound is great (I am now a true Hyams fan) and the picture is sharp and clear. A great film spoilt by a DVD lacking in the features department.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic horror film with an awesome monster! WOW!!!
Penelope Ann Miller and Tom Sizemore topline this engaging suspenser based on the best-selling novel.

Filmed inside Chicago's Field Museum, the movie centers around a horrific brain-feeding beast and its curious link to a missing paleontologist who disappeared while researching a native tribe in Brazil. This monster, designed by special effects master Stan Winston, is unlike anything you're likely to see ever again. As in most other movies like this, you don't get to glimpse it right away. Its presence is more or less represented by an unsettling wheeze that will make you wonder what on earth could be making such a sound. I won't reveal anymore, other than to say it doesn't merely chase its victims down dark and murky underground tunnels--IT GALLOPS AFTER THEM!

Forget what's been said about how overly dark this film was or how much of a letdown it was from the book. If, like me, you are any kind of horror fan who enjoys in-your-face monster movies, you owe it to yourself to buy this and watch it right now!

Watch for an amusing cameo by Audra Lindley, better known as "Mrs. Roper" from "Three's Company."

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a pretty good Monster movie that's not a critics Drama
I have seen the bad reviews and I think they are missing the point. This is a B monster movie and they are comparing it to Aliens? To me "The Thing" and "An American Werewolf in London" are some of the best monster movies of all time and I see this below them, but fun.
The big question is whether or not you like to watch a monster movie for just being a monster that causes fictionaly mayhem. I grew up watching "Creature Double Feature" with all of those old monster movies. Fact is most Monster Movies are the pits and there has not been too many that are very good at all since now a days they rely on so much CG. Also I find most people do not like the concept of a Monster to begin with; out side of the Vampire; which there has been more than a hundred titles with "Vampire" in it. Oh dear god now there is "Van Helsing" killing Vampires.
So buy it for the pleasure of seeing people attacked for fun and not because you need a masterpiece every time you start up your DVD player because you will quickly find most movies do not hold up to scrutiny. If you feel this way then it is time to start reading the Classics again like Poe since you have raised yourself above this monotony

3-0 out of 5 stars buy the book
If you really want a good story, buy the book. There is so much more to the story than what the movie showed. The only thing the movie had in common with the book was that the story took place in a museum and there was a monster. Do yourself a favor; read don't screen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hypothalumuses.
The book was excellent (as is anything written by duo DOUG PRESTON and LINC CHILD), the film is a thrown-together mess. This is a textbook example of great book-bad movie. The central character on paper was left out on celluloid for who knows why, and the complex science in the plot is traded for Hollywood dribble. F. PAUL WILSON hasn't sold his work for screen since THE KEEP was butchered, the shame is that these terrific writers might wisely take the same route. Oh, well, PRESTON/CHILD's books are so cinematic anyway, who needs pictures? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous detective movie!
Fans of Sara Paretsky's heroine, V.I. Warshawski will enjoy the clever one-liners tossed off so well by Kathleen Turner. The character's wise-girl bravura is sometimes at odds with Turner's soft beauty, but the actor does some very convincing martial arts moves not usually associated with her past performances. It's fascinating to watch how fast and furious Ms. Turner can be in these scenes!

The plot features a 13 old kid whose father is murdered. Warshawski reluctantly allows the girl to accompany her on the investigation, but be rest assured that the young actress playing the daughter wins over both you and Warshwaski without resorting to being cutesy or phony.

Readers of the detective series will spot most of the recurring characters in the books, most notably Lottie and Murray. There is the disappointing exception of Mr. Contreras, whose paternal advice and counsel is handled instead by Charles Durning's police investigator character.

I liked the movie and highly recommend it, mostly for Turner's shining screen presence. She may not be the most obvious choice for portraying V.I., but she keeps you enthralled with her great sense of humor and tough woman tenacity. I would have loved to see this movie turned into a series. After the movie ended, I wanted to see more!

The video quality is very good and was taken from an outstanding print, so you get your money's worth with the DVD version.

3-0 out of 5 stars What's not to like?
This likeable, harmless Kathleen Turner vehicle is one of those films that most "name" critics have viciously attacked for no logical reasons (critics seem to be as frequently susceptible amongst themselves to "herd mentality" as the rest of us po' ignorant movin' pitcher watchin' folk). Turner's "V.I. Warshawski" is a very credible "tough broad" character, treading the fine line between sexiness and surliness with skill and style. Granted, the predictable, standard-issue plot of this detective thriller is a minus, but the appealing cast and Turner's charisma carry the day. If you are a fan of the Warshawski books (or J.A. Jance and Sue Grafton's female detective stories)you'll find the mood and atmosphere of the film quite true to the genre. If your name is Leonard Maltin, take a pill and just relax.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leonard Maltin strikes out.
I have no idea what movie Maltin saw, but I enjoyed every moment of this film. I am a Turner fan, and a V.I. fan but do not enjoy truely bad movies. This was not a truely bad movie or a "boo-boo". It was funny and presented the characters well. Read the books, Maltin. I wish they had continued the series, I would buy them all.

4-0 out of 5 stars v.i. greatly portrayed byTurner!
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE MOVIES THAT WITH A LITTLE HELP COULD OFFER LOTS OF SEQUELS OR TURNED TO A SUCCESSFUL SERIES WITH KATHLEEN.KATHLEEN IF YOU READ THIS YOU DID A GREAT JOB!ANOTHER GOOD THING ABOUT THIS MOVIE IS THAT A WOMAN IS ON THE MAIN ROLE AND SHE CAN BE HOT AND TOUGH ALL IN ONE PERSON.HIGLY RECOMMENDED TO THOSE WHO LOVE KATHLEEN AND BELIEVE IN WOMAN'S POWER AND SUPERIORITY!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great mystery, with delicious one-liners and a great cast.
I LOVE this movie. I can't say that enough. I fell in love with this movie first time I saw it. The soundtrack was great, the cast was great, everything about this movie was just great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another triumph from the pot duo, even if it isn't numero 1
Thing's Are Tough All Over is a different approach for Cheech and Chong, and it suprisingly and finitely works to they're advantage. In this film, there isn't as much weed as there was in past movies, but it has some drug moments in case the always tokers are interested (a very funny joke comes up in the desert dealing with paiotti by the way).

But in this film, they play 2 characters a piece- Cheech as himself and Mr. Slyman and Chong as himself and Prince Habib. Depending on how much you like the duo's characters depends on if you like the movie, but if you find them funny, as I did, then you have the key. Especially since the unintended jokes by the two arabs are hilarious (i have hairpiece on my head/you have herpes on your head?).

Anyway, the plot deals with the two guys (themselves) on a mission across America from Chicago to Las Vegas to deliver a car which gets dismantled along the way. Funny all the way from the beggining Chuck Berry rant to the porno with C & C, with many things to look for along the way. Definately worth while.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny all over
This is probably the least known and the least watched Cheech and Chong movie there is. I myself was trying to find it for years, but thank God it has been released on DVD. This movie is the best on DVD and there is no other way to wathc other than on DVD. The sound is good and for a movie that was made in 1982 the picture looks extremely rich and beautiful. The only bad thing about the DVD is that it doesn't really have to many special features on it, but that isn't why you should but this. The movie foucuses on Cheech and Chong living in Chicago and working for two Arab brothers (played by Cheech and Chong). When a money deal goes wrong for the Arabs they send Cheech and Chong to take the money to Las Vegas. Overall the movie is very funny, it is probably the second funniest Cheech and Chong movie after Up in Smoke. You should see this movie, it has many very hilarious scenes and one at the end that is particulary hard to forget!

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie both BLOWS and SUCKS
I loved Up in Smoke, Next movie, and Nice Dreams. I thopught Still smokin was funny, but not as good as the others.

I do not like this one. It's boring. It doesn't have the same feel as the others. Instead of seeming like funny dirty pot smoking hippies, they're kinda wretched. Like guys you'd meet in a bus station late at night that might follow you into the bathroom. Blows or Sucks, take your pick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheech & Chong go to Las Vegas.
Cheech & Chong are back in this their fourth lead feature film. The DVD Features screen are the neon signs. So just click to the neon sign you want to make adjustments thereof. What is really nice is when you click on the "Aspect Ratio Selection", you have the choice of widescreen or full screen. Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong are funny again and this is an easy movie to follow. As usual NOT for children to see. Cheech & Chong are working at a car wash in Chicago. They lose the job (what else is new with these two?) and then go on to form a rock band. Later they head for Las Vegas. What kind of trouble can these two men get in to now? Rip Taylor is a riot in this film. He will have you laughing at both ends. Lots of Las Vegas locations. The next Cheech & Chong film is STILL SMOKIN' (1983). They also did some work in IT CAME FROM HOLLYWOOD (1982).

3-0 out of 5 stars Cheech and Chong's last great performance
This is a pretty good Cheech and Chong movie even though they were in decline, as a matter of fact, it's a pure masterpiece compared to Still Smokin' and Corsician Brothers but in this movie Cheech and Chong didn't smoke and marijuana and it has Cheech's girlfriend Donna, who was in Next Movie and Nice Dreams. If you're in the mood for a Cheech and Chong movie, watch this one, it's my third favorite Cheech and Chong movie behing Next Movie and Up in Smoke. ... Read more

"Opportunity Knocks" is a cute, funny movie. I have this movie and without a doubt, it's one of my favorites. It is Dana Carvey's first "starring" role as something other than a Saturday Night Live character and he is excellent. This movie never got the accolades it deserved (perhaps not enough press coverage). This movie is MILES above "Clean Slate" (Dana's second movie). I have felt for years that this movie was a wonderful little secret that only I and a few others in the world knew about. Dana really shines here. If you like Dana Carvey...if you like really funny, sweet little movies...if you have a sense of humor and like a good laugh - buy this movie, PLEASE. I want to share it with you !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, bad actress!
This movie is one of Carvey's best! He's very charming and as always funny. You can't help but start to love his charecter. It was an excelent movie, and I would give it a full 5, if it wasn't for Eddie's (Carvey) love intrest. I don't know if the charecter was played out perfectly, and it wasn't that interesting. Or the actress, Julia Campbell, didn't give it her best. She seemed very boring, and in many ways wrong for the part, and the guy. Other than that, this is an excelent film!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Carvey Review
A great movie, one of my favorites! Carvey does excellent acting and the karaoke scene is pure gold! Dana Carvey should consider acting again.

Dana Carvey plays a small time conman named eddie whos about to hit the big leagues. He breaks into a house and is mistaken for the housesitter. That's when the movie takes off. He has to play it cool to keep his cover and not let the girl he loves know he is a fraud. ... Read more

Few actors invoking the title of their film as a line of dialogue havehad quite the shatteringeffect that Christopher Walken does in this 1982, hour-long film by Jonathan Demme. Asthe painfully, painfully shy small-town fellow who comes to vivid life as theperpetual lead in community-theater productions, Walken's character breaks one's heartwhen he is asked to give his all yet again in another thespian triumph. This time, however, things are different: he meets his female counterpart in Susan Sarandon's equally retiringamateur actress. The two fall in love, a love most passionately expressed in the freedom oftheir stage lives, and Demme's film achieves a populist grace that fills out Kurt Vonnegut'soriginal short story into street-level Lubitsch. One of Demme's most irresistible works,Who Am I This Time? is pure joy. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

Oh, well, PRESTON/CHILD's books are so cinematic anyway, who needs pictures? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic
Maybe it's the fact that I used to watch cable television nearly every waking moment in the early 80's, but this is one of those classic movies I can never get enough of!

Ernie Souchak (John Belushi) is a Chicago reporter on assignment in the Rocky Mountains whose subject is environmentalist/bald eagle protector, Nell Porter (Blair Brown). Overweight and out of shape, he tumbles and stumbles through hikes and climbs with his agile counterpart learning about the 'other world' that exists outside the hussle and bustle of city-life. Initially turned off by the brazen Souchak, Porter slowly finds him midly attractive but always keeping her distance.

Without giving the entire story away, they wind up crossing paths again, this time in Souchak's town of Chicago. And in a fresh take, the movie doesn't end in typical Hollywood fashion.

Afficionados of romantic comedies will absolutely love this film. I, for one, developed a huge adolescent crush on the naturally beautiful and charming, Blair Brown. There are definitely some tear-jerker scenes and I'm not afraid to admit they get me everytime. Probably the fact that for a change, you saw John Belushi portraying an everyday charming guy everyone can relate to. Even the still photos of John and Blair together on set, smiling and throwing snowballs at each other on the closing credits is enough to make a tear well up, knowing this was one of Belushi's final movies.

Highly, highly recommended!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Charming, though thin romantic comedy
A highly unlikely, though heartwarming romance between two very different individuals, CONTINENTAL DIVIDE features a trying-much-too-hard John Belushi, and a lusterlack Blair Brown. The background info about the making of the movie is much more interesting than the film itself (Belushi lost 30 pounds for the part). However, I watch this idealistic romantic comedy often because it reminds me that if you really want something, there is a way to make it happen!

4-0 out of 5 stars a different side of john belushi
I saw this movie the other night and I was captivated. I only thought that John Belushi was a comedic actor. I watched and watched as I saw that there was more to John Belushi than meets the eye. The film shows the Animal House John Belushi in the beginning but later shows a different actor. The movie shows that he is a compassionate person. In short, I loved this movie I think that John Belushi is an extremely talented actor. I think it is ashame that he passed away at such an early age. I think thatn he could have made an important contribution to the film industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Continental Divide
This is John Belushi's finest moments, I could watch this movie over many times, I highly recommend this movie will be a great addition to anyones collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars From alcohol to the alps
John Belushi is forever connected to the alcohol abusing, self depricating , and party animal charators that he 's reknowned for playing in other films. Luckily , before his untimely demise , he participated in this project...Continental Divide. It totally seperates him against typecast and shows just how much diversified acting ability , he had .Whereas , alot of people (typical Belushi fans)didn't appreciate this effort, I think it was extremely refreshing. It only took me about five minutes to forget that it was John Belushi portraying Ernie Souchak. A top dog columnist who's forced out of town to do a safer article , at the request of his boss , to save him from danger. Blair Brown's Nell Porter, provides the perfect opposite, for Belushi's Souchak. The film has a very basic "boy meets girl " formula. However ,the script and actors take this film to an all time high. It is a very special film that provides very special and cinematic moments. I enjoyed it when I was a teenager and I hated love story's. But there's more to this tale than just a typical spin. Definately not a film to be missed. ... Read more

Description

Will Campbell was one of three men who shepherded the Little Rock Nine through an angry white mob before the National Guard was federalized. He was the only white man at the founding of SCLC.He was a friend and confidant of Martin Luther King, Andrew Young,John Lewis and others, andworked as a strategist and negotiator at every major civil rights campaign of the movement. This was an unusual role for a Baptist preacher from rural Mississippi. But Campbell, who had been ordained at the age of 17, came to view civil rights as an extension of Christianity, and after finishing a divinity degree at Yale, he abandoned the pulpit. But he didn't abandon the faith. He became a free lance operative for the National Council of Churches, charged with doing whatever he thought appropriate to promote racial cooperation in the south. His primary focus continues to be directed toward racial reconciliation, but he has also concerned himself with the interests which his fellow working class whites share with their black countrymen. He is by nature a populist, but mistrusts politics. Still highly active politically, his positions, like his life, defy conventional characterizations. He campaigns against the death penalty, war, and abortion. He supports the rights of women, gays, and blacks and approves of affirmative action, but mistrusts the power of government. And while preaching his radical Christianity, he saves his harshest words for the religious establishment, disdaining the Christian Coalition and referring to televangelists as "electronic soul molesters." ...
