Diamond's Music, Olivier's Presence, OH MAMMY!
This review refers to the VHS(1989 paramount) edition of this film....
At the 1927-1928 (First) Academy Awards Presentation "The Jazz Singer" starring Al Jolsen picked up a special award for pioneering the "Talkies". Obviously sound has come alooooong way since then and this 1980 modern day remake makes good use of it.
Jess Robinovitch(Neil Diamond)is a 5th generation Jewish cantor,tied to his role in the temple in the lower east side of New York. . His voice is phenominal(of course),he writes his own music, ballads mostly and has a chance to strike out on his own in Los Angeles.
He leaves for L.A. against the wishes of father, the 4th generation cantor(Laurence Olivier), and his wife, who likes things just the way they are.
It will take a while to achieve super stardom(at least a month!), but with the help of his new manager Molly(Lucie Arnaz),it is accomplished!The problem is his family is unhappy with the situation, his wife liked life when it was just them, his father is torn up about his son going against tradtion.Jess is having trouble coming to terms with the downfall of his relationship with his father. Molly feels responsible for the rift. Get your Kleenex ready as they work this out.
Diamond's soundtrack is wonderful. It includes "Love on the Rocks" and "Hello Again".Sir Olivier has not lost his touch, He is still the master. The British legend plays the Jewish cantor steeped in tradtion like he was born to the part, his performance alone is worth the watch.
The VHS is in hi-fi stereo, Dolby Surround, which enhances this musical.

For Diamond Music Fans Only
If you are a fan of Neil Diamond's music, then you will no doubt enjoy this movie.

Purely as a movie, however, this isn't very good. Cliched and schmaltzy, most of the scenes seem strung together as an excuse to fill time between musical numbers. The story, as borrowed from the original Jolson film: son of a cantor wants to sing popular music instead of following in his father's footsteps.

Neither Diamond nor Arnaz are going to win Oscars anytime soon -- in fact, Diamond demonstrates that, as an actor, he's a heck of a singer. The only shining performance in this movie is that of the incomparable Olivier, who proves that he can play any role given to him impeccably, no matter how dopey the surroundings.

If you are expecting any meat or substance to this movie, forget it. The music IS good enough to sit through once, which is why it gets two stars from me, but the only reason I own it is because my wife simply adores Diamond's music.

Buy the soundtrack, if you like it, but I would avoid the film itself. The DVD, meanwhile, is nothing special; the print is average at best, and there are no extra features worth discussing.

Luci Arnaz- remove this from your resume
Ugh. Poor plot development and cardboard characters. For example, he loves his wife sooooo much and discards her sooooo easily? Not likely. Lucie Arnaz, a wonderful personality and normally "good" actress is a cartoon character. Who could fall in love with Neil Diamond with all his angst and schmaltzy whining? Not I, that's for sure.

a bad movie with great music
This is not a great adaptation of the Jazz singer,the acting is mediocre,the progress of the plot is unrealistic,but Neil Diamond`s great music makes it worth watching.I used to have the soundtrack to this movie,i enjoyed it a great deal.

This movie's funny, heart-warming and full of Disney magic
From the very moment the movie begins--you are swept into this charming and funny story, a twist on the whole Tooth Fairy legend. It's script is smart and clever, completely holding your attention and making you laugh at the same time you are crying. Kirstie is great as the Tooth Fairy and Lynn Redgrave is excellent as the ominous Rogers. The whole family will enjoy--for all ages, not just kids! This one should have been in the movie theaters instead of TV because it's a heck of a lot better than most of the poopy we pay $8.50 for! Enjoy this--I know you will!

Had To Have It
My children loved this movie the first time they saw it, and each time it's on the Disney Channel, they clamour to see it again. They are now 8 and 11, a boy and a girl, and they both laugh and cry like it's the first time. I guess it has achieved a kind of "classic" status in our household. I know they will watch it repeatedly when we have it, it's a real "Feel Good" movie. It achieves a fine balance of humor and the resolution of an ethical dilemma in a smooth, tasteful manner (no sex, no violence, a la Disney); a rare feat that stories, either in cinema or the written word seldom accomplish. The plot is simple enough for young children, entertaining the young with slap-stick humor and predictable shticks, all the while laced with more mature references and the sweet sarcasm for which Kirstie Alley is so well known.

Alley gives a wonderfully rich performance as a self-centered dentist who, after being fatally struck by a car (no blood or gore), finds herself in limbo between heaven and "down there." Her life is "played back", and is lacking in the attributes which typically earn one a more direct route to heaven. She is offered a chance to redeem herself but isn't too thrilled about the means through which this redemption is to be accomplished...until she runs into a boy who not only SEES her, not only on the physical plain, but sees her morally, sees her "goodness" and presumes to rely on her for sage advice. In the end, lessons are learned by all, love reigns supremeI feel good about buying it, and I feel good about what liking this movie enough to want to own it says about my children.

Exceptionally Funny!!!!!
This is one of the best movies you could by! It is so funny and it teaches you a valuble lesson. I stronly suggest this movie to you!

heartwarming and comic
I enjoy watching this movie and would definitely recommend it to other parents or grandparents. It is a fun and family friendly movie for the whole family to enjoy! My husband liked it so much after seeing it on TV he searched until he found it to buy.

I'm 15....
I'm 15....and some people might think this movie is for little kids...but I first saw it on the Disney Channel when I as 12 and I fell in love with it..they kept showing it for a while but then they stoped after about a year...they have showed about 2 times since,but they havent showed it in over a year...about and hour ago I remembered the movie and I decided to check online if I could find it...and here it is.It's a great movie for the whole family which will make everyone,no matter how old...or young ;) laugh.Definitely I give it two thumbs up! ... Carl Reiner (Where's Poppa?) brought comic Steve Martin to the screen in this mostly funny 1979 movie about a relentlessly stupid but innocent man, whom we get to know from childhood (where it never occurred to him that he was white as he was raised by a family of black sharecroppers) to romance (where he doesn't quite know what to do with Bernadette Peters). "The New Phone Book Is Here!!, The New Phone Books Is Here!"
This 1979 debut for Steve Martin is one of comedy's greatest classics. This film definitley opened the door for people like Jim Carrey and all those types of comedies. This one will forever be the granddaddy of them all. Steve plays Navin Johnson, a white man who was brought up by a backwoods family who are black. Navin realizes he's not and sets out on his own to find his own life. It's one misadventure after the next. It's also one hilarious joke after another. Along the way he meets and falls in love with Bernadette Peters. There are also appearences by Carl Reiner, Jackie Mason, and M. Emmett Walsh. The movie is so slapsticky silly that it's hilarious fun to watch from beginning to end. I won't say what happens to our good old friend Navin. You'll have to see for yourself. If only the brilliant Steve Martin would return to this type of comedy. This film is pure comedy gold sent from comedy heaven. A definite must!!.

Too Funny
The Jerk is one of the most hilarious movies I've seen. The movie is about Navin Johnson (Steve Martin) who is a white boy adopted into a poor black family. He's a little "slow" and doesn't even realize he's white. The movie opens at his birthday where he's having his favorite "tuna on a white bread sandwich and a twinkie for dessert" dinner.
His problem is that he doesn't have rythmn, and late that night, he's listening to the radio when he hears "white" music, and finds that yes! he has rythmn!
So, Navin sets off to see the world, and a hilarous journey ensues - everything from a dog named sh*thead, assasination attempts to love to riches to insanity happens to poor Navin, but it's a great journey!
***** 5 stars for this classic Steve Martin comedy

If You Ever Need Cheering Up
Then this is the movie for you. That is, if you have any sense of humor whatsoever. There are so many funny, memorable scenes in this movie - like when he's standing right outside his parents' fence hitchhiking or when the guy is shooting at him - "These cans! He hates these cans!" "The new phone book is here!" "I'm somebody now!" The Jerk is one of the best comedies ever made. If you want to laugh, if you can laugh, buy or rent this movie!

weirdly funny
Steve Martin shows a lot of comedic flair in this, one of his first films (he later tones it down and hones it in later works, which is all I had seen up to this point, so this was very strange in how over-the-top he is.)

Steve plaves Navin, a white boy adopted by a large loving African-American family, who honestly believed he would turn black on his 18th birthday (which is when his family reveals to him that he is adopted, although they had hoped he would figure it out beforehand.)

Determined to make his way out in the world, Navin takes on a series of unrelated jobs that turn out poorly --- gas station attendant (in which he demolishes a church), carnival employee (where he has his first carnal knowledge and his first romantic love -- with two very different women), and later becomes a billionaire through some very odd means.

But at heart, he's just a simple country boy who wants to fit in back where he came from. He's not a bum, he's a jerk! All he has are his friends and a thermos. ... Read more
