Anyone familiar with writer/director James L. Brooks (Broadcast News, As Good As It Gets) knows the man has a real feel for interesting women and a disarming way with a one-liner. The main women in Spanglish are Deborah Clasky (Téa Leoni), a moneyed SoCal mom, and non-English speaking Flor Moreno (Paz Vega), the beautiful Latina whom Deborah hires as a housekeeper. The one-liners, some of them amusing, are everywhere. Brooks provides an intriguing set-up for the two women to butt heads--Deborah's pudgy daughter Bernice (Sarah Steele) needs the affection at which Flor excels, while Flor's clever, bi-lingual daughter Cristina (Shelbie Bruce) is enamored of the financial advantages Deborah can provide--then proceeds to make Deborah so hatefully ignorant you can't imagine why her neuroses are the main thrust of the film. And Deborah's celebrated chef husband John (Adam Sandler, way over his head) is such a perfect parent he doesn't seem human--what happened to the Brooks who had Terms of Endearment mom Debra Winger turn to her scowling little boy and grunt "Don't make me hit you in the street"? Cloris Leachman has a nifty supporting role as Deborah's boozy, ex-jazz singer mother, but it's only one offbeat chord in an earnest film that hits all the wrong notes. --Steve Wiecking ... 1-0 out of 5 stars what is wrong with Hollywood and New York?
They seem to have a prejudice against Mexican-American actors.
Not too many roles for Hispanics out there, but you would figure that at the very least Mexican actors would get parts in stories about Mexicans, right? Nope. "Selena" the story about a Mexican-American that sings Tejano music...had a Mexican actor right? Nope. Puerto Ricans and Cubans. "Spanglish" the story of a Mexican woman that comes to America...Mexican playing the part, right? Nope. They went to Seville, Spain to get this one...daytime soap operas, not very many Hispanics there...when there is a part for a Hispanic (once in a blue moon), it goes to Puerto Rican actors...Mexicans on tv? George Lopez and Cheech Marin...name 3 more...I can name 50 African-American actors just off the top of my head...20 Asian actors off the top of my head...10 Puerto Rican actors off the top of my head...4 Mexican actors off the top of my head (George, Cheech, Maria Conchita Alonso, and Fernando Lamas)...Hispanics are the largest Minority Group in America...Mexican-Americans make up 58% of that group...that is right...more than half of the largest Minority Group in America is of Mexican decent...so, when was the last time that you saw Mexicans on tv or in the movies?
Dr. Pepper has about a 14% marketshare...How would it be if you could only find one can of Dr. Pepper in every ten stores? Wouldn't you say, "Woo, something is seriously wrong here"...then they make the story of how Dr. Pepper was created....but...you used Mr. Pibb in all the product shots of the story of Dr. Pepper...about the same thing when you make movies about Mexicans, but use no Mexican actors.

So, who was the movie "Spanglish" made for? Mexicans? too far from true life for them...Puerto Ricans and Cubans? Can't relate to a movie about "Coming to America poor, for a better life" (Puerto Ricans were born Americans, Cubans were mostly either rich and/or educated escaping the overthrow of an Autocratic Government)...Spaniards? I don't think that even a handfull escaped poverty by coming to America so they can't relate to the story either...Caucasians? some yes, some no...African Americans? some yes, and some no...Asian Americans? some yes and some no...South Americans? They can relate to the story in it's purest form, but not in this Hollywood/Disneyland version...so, right from the start, this movie had a handful of potential viewers...so, again I ask, Who was this movie made for?

While I am on a tirade: Why is Cajun a language and Spanglish not? Both are a conglomerate of languages, but one is considered delightful while the other is considered an abomination...if you consider the amount of people speaking either, Spanglish is spoken by maybe 1000 times more people than Cajun is.( and believe it or not, Spanglish does have it's own set of gramatical rules...it's not just Spanish and English words thrown together haphazardly...to simplify the rules: Spanish verbs with English Nouns along with a mix of both in adverbs...Spanglish syntax is a beautiful orphan...try and mesh the opposing sytaxs of English and Spanish...Spanglish syntax somehows gets the job done.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical Adam Sandler Movie!
I have never been an Adam Sandler fan; however, this movie is really wonderful. Sandler has matured as an actor and is apparently taking roles with more meat and less physical comedy. His character is the polar opposite of Tea Leoni's. His love for their children and his understanding of human nature just shine through. Leoni is perfect as the neurotic, narcissistic wife and mother. A wonderful foil to Sandler's even tempered character. While you might think this is a great date movie, I think it's a better married with children couple date movie. Lots of truisms here. Favorite line: When Leoni's character tells her mother she isn't helping with her low self esteem, and the mother replies " these days your low self esteem is just good common sense". Sandler just might make it to my must see list for the future.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rent it?Definitely. Buy it?You could do worse.
Let's start off with; this wasn't a bad movie, it simply needed some work.

The story itself is a feel good kind of movie...often referred to as a `chick flick.'There are no explosions, no guns, and no fist-fights.Other than a nonnudity sex scene where Te'a Leoni tries to do an orgasm scene that just doesn't cut it, there isn't much to be embarrassed about when watching this with young kids.

Overall I feel the director wanted his actors to be too over the top.Te'a Leoni was waaaaaay over acting. This is something that someone just doesn't do, but is told to do.Cloris Leachman also had a few moments of over acting but for the most part was good and had some of the best lines in the movie to bring about a laugh.

Shelbie Bruce who plays Christina did a great job.She was very convincing and pulled out some fine scenes.Paz Vega who plays Flor is breathtakingly beautiful and is able to act extremely well.(I hope she does many more films)Sarah Steele who plays Bernice is bound to be a very popular actor because she can act.

The `big' name, Adam Sandler was okay.He isn't doing his normal funny guy thing in this film.I feel his character wasn't well written so much of the fault lies with the writer, who by the way is the director.

Overall, I watched it twice and enjoyed it both times but it's definitely not one I'll buy.

This was a good movie with great effort put into it from the cast and director James L. Brooks (As Good As It Gets). However, some moments of pure cheesiness, as well as silly cliches, and some serious over-doing it caused this good movie to fall short of being a great one. However, there are some laugh-out-loud hilarious moments (mostly from Tea Leoni and Cloris Leachman) and some really great dialogue (something Brooks is known for), as sappy as it is. Adam Sandler gives a good performance, especially in his moments of being out of control, you can really sense his calmness is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. This movie, though very unbelievable under the circumstances, does its job, and although it has some serious cheese factors, it's still definitely worth seeing. And now for a great line from the movie...

Evelyn Norwich: We have to talk.
Deborah Clasky: Mother, are you buzzed?
Evelyn Norwich: No. I quit drinking weeks ago! No one noticed, but I guess that's a pretty good indicator that I conducted myself quite well when I was drunk. But this isn't about me right now.

1-0 out of 5 stars What is the point of this movie?
I feel compelled to write a review on this movie because it was by far the worst movie I have seen in the past couple of years. It was an utter disappointment. I'm still scratching my head on why so many people gave it such good reviews. I think the `deep' moments the movie was supposed to portray just came across as annoying and over the top. I really hated Tea Leoni's character. Yes, I realize that not every character in every movie is supposed to be likeable, but they should at least be somewhat relatable. She was just way too over the top for me.

Also, I really did not understand the point of this movie. The movie starts off with Flor's daughter narrating her college essay, yet her daughter isn't even a centralized character in the movie...in fact her character is hardly even in the movie. Her ultimate point of her college essay at the end of the movie was that she was `her mother's daughter'. This really was not evident throughout the movie and I would not have guessed that this would be the point if she hadn't said it at the end. There really was no point to this movie; it was completely pointless in my opinion.

For Adam Sandler fans only, this dopey comedy features the former Saturday Night Live star as an overindulged rich guy whose father insists he repeat grades 1 through 12 before taking over the family business. The scenario is perfect for Sandler's infantile leanings (which he has fortunately outgrown in more recent movies), and for the most part the jokes about being too old and too big for the experiment are obvious. Chris Farley and Steve Buscemi turn up in uncredited cameo appearances, but otherwise the film is pretty dismissible, except for those diehards who can't get enough of Sandler. --Tom Keogh ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Overall Great Movie
Billy Madison is the hilarious story of a 27 year-old millionaire who goes back to school to prove to his father that he is capable of running a fortune 500 company.
Adam Sandler's performance is one of the funniest of his career, and other actors add to the humor of the movie as well, such as a cameo appearance by Chris Farley.
The movie itself can be hard to stand at some points, mostly because of the stupidity of the entire situation, and Adam Sandler's character can get annoying at times.

Even so, this movie is one of my favorites, and I recommend it to any Saturday Night Live fan, Adam Sandler fan, or just anyone who is looking for a good laugh.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adam Sandler at his most inane and comical best
Billy Madison is the most hilariously inane character that Adam Sandler has portrayed, and while I don't consider this one of Sandler's best movies, it is easily one of his funniest. A lot of the comedy seems to have come directly from the set of Saturday Night Live; it was funny there, and it is funny here. Even a few SNL buddies, namely Norm MacDonald and the late Chris Farley, turn up to revel in the infectiously entertaining silliness. Sandler plays Billy Madison (of course), the son of a filthy rich hotel magnate. He spends all of his time lazing around the pool, drinking copious amounts of alcohol, and pawing over nudie mags; his only hobby seems to be lighting bags of poo on fire on the front porch of people he doesn't particularly like. Even after his infantile behavior at a big business meeting, he is shocked to hear his father say he is giving the company to a particularly annoying executive rather than turning it over to him. He swears he will do anything, even go back to school and actually earn the diploma his father bought for him, to make his father change his mind. Monday morning finds him camped out in a first grade classroom, where he actually fits in pretty well. Every two weeks, he is tested and bumped up another grade. Billy really enjoys his time in third grade because he makes some good friends among the children and laps the elixir of knowledge from the fountain of the gorgeous Veronica Vaughn (Bridgette Wilson). As time goes by, Eric starts sweating and sets Billy up for a fall. Only the disciplinarian love of Veronica and the support of his new childhood friends can pick Billy up and get him back in the game.

I think Sandler is a comic genius, and few comedians could make such a silly, silly movie a real success. I mean, Billy does things like chase imaginary giant penguins around the house; that kind of thing just doesn't fly with any other actors. I should point out that there is actually a strong human element to this story as it progresses, though. Once all the alcohol is out of his bloodstream, Billy is a nice, good-hearted fellow, and the reliving of his old school days makes a profound impact on his character. I'm still not exactly sure what Veronica sees in him, but true success pretty much requires a good-looking woman to be there to kiss you at the end. Perhaps I should just say a final word to the parents of teenaged boys: while this movie does provide a strategy guaranteed to make any young man study his heart out, it is probably not something you will want to sanction in your own family life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the second funniest movie ever!
This is the second funniest movie on the whole planet. The only thing that beats it is Jackass: The Movie. Okay, this is Adams best movie ever. What I don't get, is that theren't aren't hardly any special features on the DVD. There aren't any deleted scenes. Hold on, I remember a kickaball scene from when I saw this on T.V. But it is nowhere on the DVD. Weird. Here is my favorite quote. Old Man: Who the h*ll is it and waddya want? Dagnabit, its one of those flaming bags again. Wife: Don't put it out with you boots, Ted. Old Man: Don't tell me my bussines devil woman! Call the fire department, this one's outta control. (Stomps on bag, takes of shoe and smells it.) Awesome movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
Adam Sandler plays Billy Madison who is over 20 years old son of a very rich man. Billy is lazy beyond belief and he is unemployed. When his father wants to retire and wants to hand over the family business to Billy but his vice president Eric protests thinking that he deserves to be in charge of the business instead. Billy is not happy about Eric taking over his father's business at all so his dad makes a deal with both, Eric and Billy.
Billy has to go to the school again and if he passes all the exams then that's when he'll take over his family business. But will Billy actually succeed???

Extremely funny like every Adam Sandler's movies

5-0 out of 5 stars "I want a snack pack!"
Billy Madison...one of the funniest movies in history. From the beginning when Billy jumps out of his pool with suntan lotion in the form of a smiley face on his abdomen yelling "Nudie magazine day!" to the end, I was laughing so hard that my ribs ached. I personally thought that everything that had to do with the silly penguin was the funniest, but Billy's maid was hilarious, too. If you've seen Big Daddy, then this is a must-have. Having a pickle slice race on the window of a restaurant looks like a lot of fun...I'll have to try that sometime. ^_^ ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 50 First Dates
50 First Dates is an above average Sandler movie.Unfourtanetly that's not real good.I liked this movie, but the crude humor was extreme. At first it's not that big of a deal, but after a while it gets old; even if it is funny. This is a times a delightful romantic comedy; with both the lead characters acting and emotional depth. The acting isn't bad even with Rob Schneider .The dialogue isn't to terrible at the end, but the movie is pretty predictable in many aspects whichs makes it just another Sandler film. The plot was different though and I liked that.If you are in the mood for another Sandler movie then you will most definetly want to check 50 First Dates.

Henry Roth (Sandler), the local marina veterinarian, only dates tourists because he's afraid of commitment--that is, until he meets Lucy (Barrymore). Unfortunately, Lucy lost her short-term memory months ago in a car accident, and for her, each day is October the 13th. She follows the same routine every day--breakfast at the same restaurant, pineapple-picking with her dad, and eventually bed time, where sleep wipes away her short-term memory. Henry, however, refuses to be forgotten, and as his puppy love matures, he embarks on a quest to restore her memory, or at least be a part of her everyday routine. But vying for Lucy's attention isn't always easy. Sandler explores various neophytic approaches before making a video for Lucy to watch every morning, reminding her of who she is and what she's doing. The film includes a trademark Sandler ballad as Henry serenades Lucy with his ukulele and a series of familiar salacious puns. Rob Schneider plays Henry's best friend, a goofy native stoner whose physical hijinks earn many of laughs, and a cameo by Dan Akroyd as Lucy's doctor rounds out the cast.

"It may leave women sighing and men wondering why there wasn't at least one more joke about the prodigious endowments of sea lions."
-- Robert Denerstein, DENVER ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS

4-0 out of 5 stars Adam Sandler Lost It...
Well, when you hear of an Adam Sandler movie, a natural reaction is that you think that the movie is a hilarious comedy, but in this case, that's not entirely true. Don't get me wrong, the movie is FUNNY, persay, but I don't think I would catagorize it as a true comedy.

If you're looking for an Adam Sandler type comedy, I'd rather recommend There's Something About Mary, which is a comedy with Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz, than this movie.

But don't get me wrong, this is a good MOVIE, but not a good comedy. Rob Schnieder's role is just plain dumb, but Drew Barrymore is what truly makes the movie worthy of watching. She did an excellent job. You have to be a die-hard Adam Sandler fan for you to appreciate his performance in this movie. If you are watching this movie for Adam Sandler, then this is a pure waste of your time, but if you're watching this movie for Drew Barrymore, it's well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars First kisses are the best!
Henry, a Hawaiian local, has always dreamed of sailing his little sailboat up to Alaska to watch walruses in their native habitat. He's never met a girl he'd like to stick around for, until he meets Lucky.
But theirs a problem. Lucy can't remember they met, or that they made a date for the next day.

A year before their meeting Lucy had an accident which deprived her of any new long term memories. This means that every day she has to start again. Her friends convince Henry to leave her alone, but he can't get her out of his mind.

Thus starts a series of interesting meetings where he tries to get to know her, and maker her fall in love with him all over again every single day.

However, Henry must not only win her over, but her family and friends as well.

From the commercials I wasn't as interested in this movie, however after seeing it I think it's a wonderful romance, with a hilarious overtone. The way he overcomes her disability is fantastic and the ending is a little surprising, but marvelous.

The Best of Chris Farley blasts through 68 minutes of the wildly hilarious characters the comic actor created while with Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s. Farley was a comedic gem--not only because he created such bizarre, repulsively funny characters, such as Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker, or Lori Davis, cosmetics infomercial queen, but because he lived completely inside the character, delivering lines with whatever fury, stupidity, hypertension, insecurity, or femininity the situation demanded. Clearly, Farley loved making people laugh and he wasn't afraid to use his big bulk to do it, whether it entailed stripping as a Chippendale's dancer, belly flopping on coffee tables, rolling around on a couch as Tom Arnold, or punching his forehead in dismay on the "Chris Farley Show." What's great about this collection is all of those characters appear; what's disappointing is that some don't linger long enough, while others appear a bit too long. The cafeteria-lady number could've been cut short in lieu of a longer Tom Arnold segment, or Herlihy Boy could've been removed altogether in favor of complete "Chris Farley Show" segments. Still, if you forgot how side-splitting Farley's portrayal of Dom DeLuise or the French-fry-stuffing Gap girl was, this video will happily jog your memory.--Karen Karleski ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comic Legacy.
Though some may disagree, Chris Farley was a comic genius (if you don't believe me just watch TOMMY BOY). The characters he played were often loud, but rarely offensive and usually hilarious (compare that to the last five or six years of SNL; there is a huge difference). In part, his humoring was so appealing because Chris looked just like a normal guy and he loved making people laugh.

This collection of SNL sketches and skits is a fitting tribute to Farley. The DVD includes "Andrew Giuliani"; "Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker"; "Chippendales"; "Superfans-Jordan"; snippets of "The Chris Farley Show"; a physical comedy montage; and "Lunchlady". There are a few omissions from the Chris Farley repertoire. However, most of the best ones are here. My only complaint is that there should have been more of certain characters (why wasn't there more "Tom Foley" sketches?).

A wonderful DVD that any Chris Farley fan will welcome, and that non-fans can at least watch to appreciate the humor of Chris Farley.

5-0 out of 5 stars I miss this big guy...
I've found that most people either totally love Chris Farley or, when you bring him up, make a face and say, "I never really thought he was funny." If you are in the first, and don't own this video yet, RUN don't walk to the shopping cart and buy one. When they ran it the first time on TV, it wasn't long after Farley's death, and I was still sad about it. After the sober opening by Tim Meadows, however, I started laughing pretty much non-stop till it was over. His better-known routines are on here, such as Bennet Brower, Matt Foley, and the Chippendale's dancer, which are all hilarious. But there's also quite a few skits that I never saw, and we watched pretty much every week when he was in the cast. My only complaint is that it isn't longer, and some funny skits, they only show snippets of, like him playing Alan Hale, and the skit with Sandler where Michael Keaton was the host and Sandler plays his cranky grandmother whom he has to watch for 20 minutes. (if you want to see the whole skit, which is one of the funniest things I've ever seen them do, then buy the Best of Adam Sandler as well, because it the whole skit, plus some other great Farley stuff not on this tape is on there). The only noticeable (if you're a Farley fan) omission is a skit called "The Relapse Guy" where he plays a guy who goes to rehab then gets wasted again over and over (it's way funnier than it sounds, trust me). I think they thought it was a little too close to home (though they did leave in the Ditka stuff with him faking a heart attack-that kind of made me wince). Every time I see this, several things happen-- I get sad that he wasn't around long enough to make more movies with Spade, or even by himself, because (this sounds corny) he had so much to give. I also get pi$$ed off at him for not taking better care of himself and dying. I also usually laugh so hard I fall off the couch. No matter how bad of a day I had, I can watch almost any of the skits on here and get cheered up instantly. He was a guy who could just say one line that you would think no-one could say and make it funny, and make you fall down laughing just the way he says it. His costars really had a hard time keeping character, which shows even more in the dress rehersal 'blooper' clips they show. Watch David Spade and Christina Appelgate during the Matt FOley thing- they both have to turn away from the camera to hide their faces because they can't keep a straight face, and when he starts in with the "I bet you're asking yourself 'hey Matt, how do we get back on the right track?' " you can see their shoulders shaking they are laughing so hard. Sandler can't keep a straight face when he's doing the "Lunchlady" song with him, either. Come to think of it, I have no clue how anyone on stage with him could ever keep a straight face. If you were bummed out when he died, get ready to get teary (though you'll already have tears running down your face from laughing) when he sings, "so long, farewell" as Matt Foley at the end, sitting on Phil Hartman's lap (I could watch this without tearing up until Hartman was killed, now I can't see the clip without getting choked up). But even if you do get emotional, keep watching, because after the credits they stick on the one thing I'd been hoping for the whole time-a quick clip of Farley as "Sandman" on "Nat X". What a waste- I hope whereever he is he knows how happy he made people during the short time he was around (and how happy he is still making those of us who thought he was funny).

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Physical Comedy
In his short tenure on this earth, Chris Farley provided us with some of the funniest moments in "Saturday Night Live" history. Heavily inspired by John Belushi (not just in his comedy but his dangerous lifestyle), he suddenly became the show's most talented physical comedians, bringing the pratfall back to households.

5 years of classic comedy has been put on this dvd. Farley created for himslef a variety of classic charcaters for himself, including Matt Foley (who lives in a van down by the river!!!), Todd O'Connor of "Superfans" and Barney The Chippendale Auditioner. All of these classic characters are here. Also, there's his "exciting" impression of Laurie Davis in the "Focus On Beauty" sketch. There are several montages that just to show how funny he was: one where he's in drag, a montage of his talk show, one showcasing his physical comedy, an impressions montage, and one featuring outtakes from Dress Rehersal.

Overall, very good. My one complaint may seem odd. There's not enough sketches featruing Adam Sandler! I know that the focus is supposed to be on Farley, but he and Adam shared so many great skecthes together, and they obviosuly bought out the best of each other. The ones with him are good, but it would have been better if "Zagat's" and "Gap Girls" (both featured briefly in the "Drag Montage) were on here. But still, it's an excellent dvd.

2-0 out of 5 stars Strong start... poor finish
I dunno what it is, but I've always enjoyed Chris Farley's "loud-obnoxious-fat-guy-falling-down-and-breaking-stuff" routine that he did in the handful of movies he starred in prior to his untimely demise. Keeping this in mind during my last visit to the local Hollywood video, I decided to check out this collection of SNL sketches that he starred in, just to see if I had a possible "keeper" to place alongside 'Tommy Boy' and 'Beverly Hills Ninja'. As soon as I got home I threw this into the player, pressed 'play', and relaxed to what was hopefully gonna be a good show. Which it was... at first. After gettin' past the way-too-love-fest-y "in memoriam" intro by Tim Meadows (jeez, whatever happened to that guy, anyway?) I found myself yukkin' it up over the opening sketch of the titular star playing then-NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani's (Kevin Nealon) obnoxiously hyper son. After that, he showed his range by playing... an obnoxiously hyper motivational speaker who tries to set a couple kids straight with his bellowing "living in a van down by the river" spiel. Then there's the so-wrong-to-laugh-at-but-I'm-laughing-anyway alternative lifestyle-themed beer commercial with Adam Sandler, followed by the infamous 'Chippendale try-out' with Patrick Swayze... which I consider to be Farley's greatest SNL piece. Oh man, was that sketch a hoot! A very disturbing hoot, but a hoot all the same!

Unfortunately, after this initial volley of sketches and commercial parodies, things really go downhill. Save for his 'quotation-finger'- laden commentary on one Weekend Update segment, I hardly uttered a chuckle the rest of the way. I never did find any of those 'Da Bearsss' sketches all that amusing, and the one they show here with guest star Michael Jordan is no exception. And the string of stammer-laden 'Chris Farley Show' bits with Jeff Daniels, Martin Scorsese, and Paul McCartney were downright tedious. And it didn't help that two of the pieces centered more around Adam Sandler (his retarded 'Lunch Lady Land' tune, and the just-plain-lame 'Herlihy Boy House-Sitting Service' piece), while Farley basically acts as a sideline character for Sandler to play off of. Speakin' of Adam Sandler: his inexplicable success with those lame movies he does is proof positive to me that there is no God. No Supreme Being who truly cares for His creations would have let this unfunny yutz become such a profit-generating force in Hollywood while allowing Chris Farley to shuffle off this mortal coil from a coke overdose...

Needless to say, I'm definitely NOT gonna add this one to my personal video collection. It was hardly worth the rental fee I plopped down for it, let alone what they're askin' for it to own! Guess I'll just hafta settle for another viewing of 'Black Sheep' to get my Farley fix...

2-0 out of 5 stars The Waterboy-- Proof of the " I like Adam Sandler Syndrome"
The Waterboy left me scratching my head after watching it on DVD. I found myself wondering why this movie made so much damn money. Adam Sandler was pathetic in his role as a backwoods dullard that went from waterboy to football superstar. He seemed to be playing a much dumber and annoying Forest Gump. Kathy Bates as the insanely overprotective mother was much less annoying than Sandler but still could have been better. It seemed to me that "The Waterboy" tried too hard to make her funny in every seen. Too much snake eating, squirrel shocking, and hair brushing. The whole reference to "the devil" was too repetitive. The transition from her insanity to sanity in the whole hospital scene had no foundation. I thought Henry Winkler was okay as the Football coach with a few nuts and bolts loose. The scene with the Roy Orbison tatoo was shamefully the most intelligent in the movie. Farmer Fran was a total enigma to me. Was it supposed to be funny that you had absolutely no idea what he was saying? I always think that its what people say and do that is funny not what they sound like or move like. I'm not a big fan of the whole waterboy- gets-hit-with-football-everbody-giggle-philosophy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A feel-good comedy featuring Sandler at his funniest
While The Wedding Singer will probably always be my favorite Adam Sandler movie, The Waterboy is by far his funniest, and I think I actually enjoy this film more each time I watch it. It is the perfect answer for a bad day, as not only is it hilarious and uplifting, it lets you take out some of your own pent-up aggression with each powerful hit Bobby Boucher (Sandler) makes out on the football field. Bobby represents everyone who has ever been excluded, picked on, or ridiculed. While he is not an intellectual giant and does not possess what you call people skills, his kind and simple nature makes him a man among men even before he finds stardom on the gridiron. The boy certainly loves his mama, and Kathy Bates shines in her role as the overprotective, quirky, slightly touched in the head Helen Boucher. If anyone ever questioned Bates' ability to do comedy, this movie should banish all doubts. Fairuza Balk is strangely beguiling as Vicki Vallencourt, a "bad girl" who has long had an interest in Bobby over his mother's objections, and the two make a really strange yet somehow logical couple. Bobby's mother describes Vicki as "the devil," but of course she considers just about every person on the planet besides herself and Bobby to be "the devil."

Bobby's real passion in life is his job as waterboy for the local college football team, a real powerhouse coached by Coach Red Beaulieu (Jerry Reed). When he gets fired, he goes seeking water management employment at South Central Louisiana State University, a legendarily bad team coached by Coach Klein, a very un-Fonzie-like Henry Winkler. When Coach Klein convinces Bobby to defend himself against the taunts of team members, he finds himself looking at a natural-born linebacker. Mama does not want her son playing "foosball," but what Mama does not know won't hurt her (Bobby ingeniously blames all of the cuts and scrapes he acquires during the season on an escaped gorilla). He records a record-shattering sixteen quarterback sacks in his first game, drawing national attention from the real-life sportscasters of ESPN. A magical season unfolds at SCLSU, setting up a Bourbon Bowl meeting of the little college who could and mean old Coach Beaulieu's undefeated championship squad. At this point, certain complications arise, a secret history between Coaches Beaulieu and Klein is revealed, and SCLSU's dream season stands on the point of suddenly becoming a nightmare.

This is not a high-brow comedy, but there is nothing wrong with corny comedy as long as it is funny, and The Waterboy is, to repeat myself, hilarious. Football fans will definitely get a kick out of the way Bobby just destroys his opponents on the field, using several moves that you will not see in the NFL any time soon in the process (certainly not more than once). Perhaps overlooked in the midst of all the comedy is a more serious theme, however. This movie is a story of overcoming obstacles, believing in yourself, and redemption, not just for the ultimate underdog Bobby Boucher but for his mother, Coach Klein, and several other characters. You almost have to feel pumped up and happy in the end, and that counts for a lot in and of itself. Sometimes the good guys do come out on top, or so most of us like to believe in order to get through each day. The Waterboy helps us keep our faith and inspires us to rise above all of the bad things in life and concentrate on such simple yet important matters as family, friendship, love, and always doing your best.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of Adam Sandler's best movies.
The Waterboy is a movie that doesn't require a lot of brain power to figure out, but it's loaded with comedy and hilarious lines from Adam Sandler. One particular part of the movie that I love is when he is in a college class dealing with the agression center of animals and Bobby is asked why alligators are such aggressive creatures. Since his Mama was supposedly right about everything, his answer was "Mama says that alligators are angry 'cause they got all those teeth and no toothbrush." That's comedy, man! Simple comedy, maybe, but it's funny all the same! This is definitely a must-have for any Adam Sandler fan. If you don't like Adam Sandler, then you're not going to like this movie. End of story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Torn
This movie is very funny in some aspects, however it's very hard to laugh or enjoy in comparison to Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison. I really loved Adam Sandler, however any movie made after Billy or Happy just seemed to lag off really badly, (i.e. Little Nicky, Big Daddy and various others)

I wasn't too thrilled with this one, except Kathy Bates, Blake Clark and Henry Winkler pretty much saved it from drowning (bad pun I know) in its own title.

I'm kind of disappointed with this movie, but I wouldn't say not to watch it or buy it because if you love stupid comedy like I do, then you'll like this. I'm more apt to rent it rather than own it (if I didn't own it already)

4-0 out of 5 stars Silly and funny
If you like Adam Sandler, you will like this movie.
If you don't like Adam Sandler, then you will not like this movie.

I like Sandler.
This movie was funny, and if analyzed correctly, quite meaningful. ... Read more

Phil Hartman was one of the most versatile comedians of his time: whether he was playing the voice of Troy McClure on The Simpsons or portraying the pompous Bill McNeal on NewsRadio, his comedy was always fresh and outrageous. His breakthrough was as a cast member of the late-night program Saturday Night Live, where he satirized everything from politics (Bill Clinton, Admiral Stockdale--Ross Perot's misguided running mate--and Barbara Bush) to entertainment (Frank Sinatra and Phil Donahue), creating unforgettable characters along the way. This "best of" video captures his funniest SNL moments and includes the TV special Saturday Night Live Remembers Phil Hartman plus more. Among the highlights are the commercial Compulsion; Bill Clinton jogging to a fast-food joint (which, filmed long before the Lewinsky incident, seems surprisingly prescient as Clinton comments, "There's gonna be a whole bunch of things we don't tell Mrs. Clinton. Fast food is the least of our worries."); Discover the World of Science, where Hartman portrays an annoyingly daft TV host to Jon Lovitz's scientist; Barbara Bush hosting Nancy Reagan at tea in the White House; Cooking with the Anal Retentive Chef; and Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. Brief snippets of Hartman in a variety of his roles show some classic moments without slowing down the pace of the collection. This video also features SNL cast members Dana Carvey, Jan Hook, Chris Rock, Chris Farley, Victoria Jackson, and more. Of all the Saturday Night Live retrospectives, this is one of the most consistently funny compilations and truly showcases the best of Phil Hartman. --Jenny Brown ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars; Could've Been Better
When Phil Hartman was murdered by his wife, he left behind something that nobody could take from him - his legacy. As possibly "Saturday Night Live's" most versatile star, he was a major influence on later, equally great castmembers Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond (who is the only castmmebrs whose Bill Clinton impersonation matched up to Hartman). As always, when he died, Lorne and company decided it was time to put together a tribute show as they did for Chris Farley. The resulting "The Best Of Phil Hartman" was mixed at best.

The first half is hilarious. Here, he gest to show up his versatillity in such roles as Frank Sinatra ("The Sinatra Group"), Bill Clinton ("Clinton At McDonald's"), Peter Graves ("Discover The World Of Science"), Phil Donahue ("Donahue"), and "Barbara Bush (don't know name of sketch, but features Nancy Reagan (Jan Hooks) trying to take back the White House). Also, there's a great montage of his impressions. He became so well known for playing Bill Clinton, people forget that his repetoire included Ted Kennedy, Andy Griffith, Telly Savalas, Michael Caine and even Jesus. Also, there's his infamous "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer" and one, the "Weekend Update' "All Drug Olympics".

But after this, the dvd falters. While "Cooking With The Anal Retentive Chef" "Succinctly Speaking", and the touching closer "Love Is A Dream" are worth viewing, the second montage (don't know what it's about), "On Broadway", "Ann Boleyn" and "Robot Repair" rank among the worst "SNL" skecthes ever.

Is this dvd worth viewing? Yes. But is it perfect? By all means, no. How could it have been better? First, they could've taken out the entire second half (with the eexception of "Anal Retentive Chef", "Succinctly Speaking", and "Love Is A Dream") and replaced it with the "Sinatra Duets" sketch, another Clinton one, and a montage of his voiceovers. I think Phil Hartman deserves a best - of, volume 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of "The Best of" videos so far!
The opening credits for this video say "Saturday Night Live Remembers Phil Hartman." How could anybody NOT remember Phil Hartman? With so many impersonations and characters, I'm sure it was very difficult for the creators of this video to pick out "The Best of Phil Hartman." The following skits and impersonations are included in this 83 minute video:
Cold Opening - Admiral Stockdale
The Sinatra Group
Compulsion
Clinton At McDonald's
Donahue
Discover The World of Science
Barbara Bush
Ronald Reagan
"The Tonight Song" with Steve Martin
Governor Mario Cuomo
Senator Edward Kennedy
Church Chat
Visit From Jesus Christ
Charlton Heston
Johnny Cash
Michael Caine
Telly Savalas
Burt Reynolds
Star Trek
Andy Griffith
"Dadly Duties"
Ed McMahon
Unfrozen Cave Man Lawyer
Weekend Update Commentary: The All-Drug Olympics

Johnny O'Connor
Cooking With the Anal Retentive Chef
Succinctly Speaking
Encounter With Mr. Cherrywood
Sassy

Sprockets Dating Game
On Broadway
Robot Repair

I would say 30 out of the 36 sketches on this tape are very funny. It's incredibly saddening that Hartman is no longer alive to share more laughs with us. This tape is a great tribute to the times that he was. I dare you fans and new viewers to try not to laugh as you view this truly great tribute to a truly comedic genius.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should have been better...
I read all the reviews of this, and i found the one extremely negative one and figured it was just some moron that didn't know what he was talking about. After buying this and watching it, i realized that he was way closer to the truth than any of the other reviewers. This dvd contains about 4 funny sketches, tops. I remember phil hartman being way funnier than he is portrayed on this dvd, and i have a theory as to why this one stinks as bad as it does.
-Phil Hartman is an extremely funny and talented actor, but for some reason he was written in as a funny "side guy" in a lot of sketches, and the ones where he is the main character, he is usually doing an impression of someone or it is just plain boring, for whatever reason. Therefore, to see Phil Hartman in his top form, you would be better off buying Adam Sandler's, Mike Myers', or Chris Farley's dvds, because theirs probably have all the sketches in which we remember Phil Hartman being so funny. The only sketches left by the time they got around to making Hartman's dvd were the ones we would have been better off forgetting. The only things worth watching on this dvd are "cooking with the anal retentive chef" and "the all drug olympics," which is about 10 seconds long. I hate to write a review like this because i really loved phil hartman, but it is a shame that i would rather watch the "bad" ones on the will ferrell dvd than the "good" ones on this dvd. Sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Starts Out Good But Falters At The End
For 8 years, Pil Hartman kept America laughing as one of (if not the ) most versatile castmembers on "Saturday Night Live". Judging by his long line of work, it would be hard to find just 20 sketches that would qualify as his best. In 1998, shortly after he was murdered by his wife Brynne, Lorne Michaels and Company came up with "Saturday Night Live: The Best Of Phil Hartman", which was soon released on dvd. The results were okay at best.

The first half is hilarious. "The Sinatra Group" is my favorite, especiially the Sinead O'Connor (Jan Hooks) jokes. Also worth a view are "Clinton At McDonald's" and "Discover The World Of Science With Peter Graves", in which Hartman plays the screen veteran as a bumbling idiot (so gold is long and thin like, say, Kareem Abdul Jabaar?). Best of all, there's a montage of his impressions. So many people watch him for his Bill Clinton that they forget his repitoire ranged from Ted Kennedy to Burt Reynolds to Jesus. After the "All Drug Olympics" sketch, the dvd falters a bit, but enjoys a resurgance of hilarity with "Cooking With The Anal Retentive Chef". But skecthes like "Robot Repair" and "On Broadway With Brenda Krouse" just weren't as good as I expected. The final sketch is "Love Is A Dream", a short film with an ending that will leave you misty - eyed.

Overall, not a bad set, but it could have been a better sketch. For instance, where was the sketch where he's Frank Sinatra and he's recording his "Duets" album and he doesn't like his partners?

1-0 out of 5 stars Have you clowns even watched this yet??
First off, the 1 star is for the 10 minutes of extras. They are the only material half funny on this entire DVD. I sat in total shock as I watched the first chapter, then the next, and the next. I kept saying, this is going to be halarious, you just wait. It was very painful to watch. For one of the most talented actors to come out of SNL, they picked the absolutely worst episodes to show. The opening segment was the most boring, unfunny scene he's ever done. What were they thinking??I know there are many of you out there right now saying, "hey, he's absolutely right, it sucked!". Maybe that's why it took so long to release his compilation; Maybe all the good episodes are still tied up in his estate litigation, or.. someone maybe couldn't make up their mind on what was funny and what wasn't. The people that put this DVD together should be taken out back and stoned by Phil's true fans. If you want a great example of showcasing a talent, watch Chris Farley's SNL DVD......You'll laugh yer ass off start to finish. All I can say is I wish I could get my money back because this was absolutely terrible!!! I hope I can get $5 for it at my spring garage sale, but I seriously doubt it! Shame on SNL for releasing this goop. Even Will Ferrel's wasn't as polished as Farleys or Meyer's or even Sandlers DVD!! No wonder SNL sucks now, it has run it's course and their compilations get worse and worse. You'll agree, the best ones were the first ones....right?

You're better off having been born after, say, 1965, if you really want to enjoy this corny romantic comedy and its abundant references to the MTV culture of the mid-1980s--and even then the odds are only 50-50 that you'll have a shamelessly good time. But a lot of people beat those odds, because The Wedding Singer was a surprise box-office hit when released in early 1998, and it resulted in Saturday Night Live graduate Adam Sandler's salary going ridiculously sky-high. It's a schizophrenic film about a seemingly schizophrenic wedding singer (Sandler) who's charmingly sweet to some people but a tongue-lashing maniac to others, probably out of frustration over his fading ambition as a wannabe rock star (not to mention Sandler's penchant for loud-mouthed lunacy). When he meets an admiring young waitress (delightfully played by Drew Barrymore), it's love at first sight, complicated by their pending marriages to much less appealing fiancés. The plot then contorts itself to accommodate this contrived will-they-or-won't-they? scenario, so you're better off ignoring the love story and focusing on the comedy, which is sporadic but occasionally hilarious. This is also a lighter, friendlier Sandler than moviegoers had seen before, which probably accounts for the movie's success. Toss in a fine supporting cast--including a show-stopping drunk act by indie-movie stalwart Steve Buscemi--and you've got the ingredients for a no-brainer that's ultimately more fun than it is annoying. --Jeff Shannon ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Adam's Best
You are cordially invited to fall in love with one of the funniest romantic comedies of the year! It's 1985 and Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler) is the ultimate master of ceremonies...until he is left at the altar at his own wedding. Devastated, he becomes a newlywed's worst nightmare - an entertainer who can do nothing but destroy other people's weddings. It's not until he meets a warm-hearted waitress named Julia (Drew Barrymore) that he starts to pick up the pieces of his heart. The only problem is, Julia's about to have a wedding of her own and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a lifetime, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

From big hair to Billy Idol (as himself), The Wedding Singer features a hilarious cast and a platinum soundtrack including 80's hits from Culture Club, David Bowie and The Police.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of Adam Sandler`s Best Films.
Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler) is a talented singer, who is the Ulimate Master at Ceremonies but When he`s about to get married, his girlfriend (Angela Featherstone) left him at the altar at his wedding. Mad at the world and especially himself, only thing, he could do is destory other`s people wedding just into he meets a soft-hearted waitress named Julia (Drew Barrymore) helps him to pick up the broken pieces of his heart. When Robbie meets Julia`s fiancee (Matthew Grove) and finding out that he`s a real jerk (especially when he manipulated Julia`s heart). Robbie falls in love with her, unless he could pull off a genuine moment with Julia before she gets married with a SOB.

Directed by Frank Coraci (The Waterboy) made a wonderful memorable romantic comedy that is absolutely satisfying. Sandler brings One of his Best Roles as a Struggling Song Writer & Barrymore is adorable as the Woman of his Dreams. This was a Surprise Box Office Hit, when it was release in the Winter of 1998. Carrie Fisher did some re-writes for this film, which she`s uncredited. Allen Covert is also fun as Robbie`s best friend and Christine Taylor is also attractively sexy as Julia`s Cousin. DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer (also in Pan & Scan) with an fine Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD Extras are a Theatrical Trailer, Cast & Information & Three Karoke Songs. Billy Idol appears in a amusing cameo and also Jon Lovitz as a ridiculous Party Singer. Steve Bucesmi appears unbilled in a funny bit. Written by Tim Herlihy. Grade:A-.

Adam sandler and Drew barrymore go nuts in this hilariouse romantic comedy, like 50 first dates.

"PERFECT."

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time romantic greats
This is one of the best all-time romantic comedies. You should be well-versed in 1980s pop culture to get the true humor, but a good time by all is basically guaranteed. One of my all-time favs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Drew barrymore, and adam. 22nd may 2004.
The film was ace, i thought by watching it that drew and adam would be brill together for real life. They are great friends and they both act together soooooooo cool! Drew is funny in a couple of parts of the film i certainly think she should be a comedian, she is sooooooooooo funny. I really enjoyed one of there other films they made together 50 first dates, that was soooooooooo romantic. I think this musical film defently deserves a 5 star and not less because the acting is cool, and they are both made to act together. And she's my favorite actress anyway. It got me so tempting in buying this video because i like to see films with them both in together, it is certainly a good film for you if you like drew or adam. GOT TO BE SEEN, EVEN IF YOU ARN'T MUCH FOR A MUSICAL. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good premise, poor execution
Though with the talents of Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler, Anger Management is a bad movie. It's plot is pretty straight-foreward, with Sandler as a business man who's rage keeps building up, and he gets mad at a flight attendant on a airplane, and a court forces him to undergo anger management therapy for thirty days. Nicholson, his therapist, decides he needs more, and ends up moving in with him. Sure, these two men are very funny, and this film could be something, but after a while, we get tired of seeing close-ups of Nicholson's scary face for laughs. Although an occasional laugh here and there, this is an un-funny film. After the commercial successes of such films as Big Daddy and The Waterboy, Adam has made Mr. Deeds (did so-so), 8 crazy nights (bad), and this. I expected there to be a lot more people at the theater than there actually were. This film had some cameos, such as Derek Jeter, Rudy Giuliani, John Macenroe, and Bobby Knight. Obviously a film by the producers of "The Animal," and "The Master of Disguise" isn't in great taste. Galaxia (Woody Harrelso) is just gross. It seems that Adam Sandler's career started off slow, got huge, and now is slowly dying. Although different, "Punch-Drunk Love" understood Sandler's strength's and weaknesses. When you have him as an executive producer, then it's just a free for all. Very close to one star. This is the worst film so far this year, and I've seen Bringing Down the House..... God Bless America!

4-0 out of 5 stars Goosefrabba.........Goosefrabba..........
.......That's the mantra Dr. Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson) teaches the patients in his anger management class to recite to calm themselves down. The joke is that Rydell himself is a seemingly disturbed semi-psychotic. After meeting on an ill-fated flight, helpless schlub Dave Buznik (Adam Sandler) is arrested and sentenced to attend Rydell's sessions, despite the fact that Rydell was the cause of the incident in the first place. After another "Violent outburst", Buznik is given an ultimatum: 24-Hour supervision by Rydell for one Month, or one Year in jail. After a few days, that Year in jail might just start to look good....

Sandler delivers a relatively restrained performance, and Nicholson is more crazy than he's been since The Shining or Batman. He gets most of the laughs, while Sandler plays straight man. As usual, Sandler surrounds himself with some great talent, including Luis Guzman, Harry Dean Stanton, John Turturro, Marisa Tomei, John C. Reilly, and lots of others, including some truly inspired cameos that generate big laughs.

While not gut-bustingly funny, Anger Management was a pretty good film, and the chemistry between Sandler and Nicholson is great; Nicholson can get a big laugh just by arching one of his trademark brows. I could have lived without the sappy finale, and Marisa Tomei's revalation at the end also dampened my enthusiasm a little; I know it's just a movie, but it defied all credibility. Otherwise, Anger Management is a fun way to spend a few hours.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another standard Sandler comedy
This Adam Sandler flick is actually one of his most accessible. Jack Nicholson and a supporting cast that includes Marisa Tomei, Heather Graham, John Turturro, & Woody Harrelson drive Sandler's character to become so frustrated that he lets out his repressed anger and opens up to his true feelings. The movie follows the Sandler formula of a likable underdog who redeems himself and "gets the girl" in the end. Nicholson is in fine form as the "Anger Management" shrink and NY Yankee fans will enjoy the film's climax at Yankee Stadium. Some parts of the story are pretty silly and pointless, but overall this movie delivers lots of laughs. There is a bit of a dark side to this story, as if this scenario were applied to real life instead of "reel" life people could really get hurt. A person subjected to such an invasive intrusion into their life would presumably become assertive or aggressive much quicker than the character in this film. I consider this one of Sandler's most enjoyable movies, as he is not too over the top or juvenile, and the story and cast work well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tension Reliever
I just love this movie. The premise and format is interesting and funny, even after watching it at least 10 times. Jack Nicholson was a perfect fit for the off-the-wall character, Dr. Buddy Rydell, even if Mr. Nicholson felt it a bit of a stretch himself.

I like Adam Sandler's movies anyway, and this one was no different.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great if your an Adam Sandler fan, OK otherwise
Possible Spoilers Ahead:

I have to admit that I am not a big Adam Sandler fan. However, I saw the trailers and I was intrigued by the thought of Sandler playing a regular guy to an over-the-top Jack Nicholson. About halfway through the movie, I had trouble following the storyline. I think this was due to Sandler playing his mild mannered Dave Buznik character too calm in the beginning. While I understand the concept of a guy who internalizes his anger (which is why he was a candidate for Anger Management classes), even guys who internalize their anger show some frustration when there are problems. I thought Buznik's overly calm reactions seemed unrealistic during the entire flight attendant hostility 'over the headset' episode. I suppose Sandler was trying to go for no reactions at first and building up, over the course of the movie, to more obvious displays of anger (like the fight with his grade school nemesis turned Buddhist monk), but he started out so overly calm at the beginning, it was hard for me to understand whether he was acting or not. While the West Side Story 'I Feel Pretty' bit had some amusing possibilities, the Buznik character started well (frazzled at being forced to stop on the bridge and sing for his bizarre therapist), but the singing soon became too much like Sandler doing his singing bits for SNL, and not Buznik trying to placate his therapist so he could get to work. This may explain why some of the other reviewers gave this movie a thumbs down. I did find the second half more entertaining, mainly because I thought the Buznik character seemed to be reacting in a more realistic fashion to hostility directed at him. I didn't mind the final scene at Yankee Stadium, but I didn't think the cameos from the baseball players were required. While it was nice to see Rudy Giullani, that part could have also gone to someone playing just a regular guy in the stands rooting for the guy to propose to the girl at these sporting events (I didn't think all of the cameos were required - or added anymore laughs to the film).
Overall, this movie has some entertainment value (good as a rental), better for the die-hard Adam Sandler fans. ... Read more

Heavy-metal golf with Adam Sandler, a 1996 dry run of the wild-man-athlete formula that paid off so handsomely in The Waterboy. There are some irresistibly funny sequences, although you may hate yourself for laughing at the mean-spirited slapstick. This isn't a classic golf comedy, like the Bill Murray vehicleCaddyshack, but as a hot-tempered would- be hockey player who finds an unexpected métier as a power golfer, Sandler has a short-fuse shtick that's effectively deployed. He's like a punk rocker gleefully out of his element, puncturing the country-club atmosphere by using the fairway as a private mosh pit. The action gets repetitive beyond the midpoint, and a subplot involving Gilmore's lovable grandma and her problems with the IRS is dismayingly sappy. Sandler's iconoclasm is mostly window dressing; there's no conceptual or satirical daring in his kind of "outrageousness." The strong supporting cast includes Christopher McDonald as Gilmore's smug rival on the links, Julie Bowen as a perky publicist, and, in a memorable bout of fisticuffs with our hero, game-show host Bob Barker. Director Dennis Dugan(Problem Child) himself plays Doug Thompson, the golf-tour supervisor. --David Chute ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't think your lungs can handle this kind of laughter...
You're looking for a comedy on DVD. Let's see...

You don't want any comedy that's too sophisticated, like "Deconstructing Harry".

You don't want any comedy that's too insane, like "There's Something About Mary".

You JUST want to laugh.

I'm proud to say "Happy Gilmore" will make you scream with laughter, my friend. This is Adam Sandler's platinum hit, the best comedy of his career. It has the coveted Amazon.com five-star customer rating, a rare find indeed for the comedy lover, and reviewers call it "the best golf comedy since 'Caddyshack'". The movie stars Adam Sandler (Bulletproof, The Wedding Singer, Billy Madison) as Happy Gilmore, a short-fused hockey player who just realized he AGAIN didn't make the cut for his hockey team for the 10th time in a row. After taking out his raging anger on the coach, he life begins to spiral downwards when his girlfriend leaves him, and he realizes his grandmother's prized house built by his grandfather's bare hands if about to be seized by the IRS in 90 days due to her failure to pay taxes in over a decade. But when he discovers his monster hockey slapshot equals one hell of a talent in golf, he is talked into playing golf by a local retired golfer, Chubbs Peterson, for the money to reclaim his grandma's house. But not only is Happy not ready for golf, but the president of the Pro Tour, Doug Thompson, doesn't think golf is ready for Happy! Even his future golf enemy, Shooter McGavin, thinks he's making a mockery of golf with his very bad temper and his rambunctious behavior. But Happy is a hit with fans, so he's weaved himself through the loophole...for now. For a shining moment he's riding on Cloud 9-iron, but Shooter McGavin, and the accidental death of his beloved mentor Chubbs, are threatening to take away not only his grandmother's house, but his dream as well, and it's not just about his grandma's house anymore...it's about triumph.

So, if you love simple comedy, get Happy Gilmore on DVD. You'll fall down laughing....guaranteed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Gilmore
The movie Happy Gilmore is the funniest laugh-out loud golf comedy since Caddy Shack. From the very first scene to the last, Adam Sandler and his cast will keep you in stiches and gasping for a breath. Unlike other of his comedies, Adama Sandler is not the only one delivering the laughs. A cast, who isn't that famous yet, but hilarious and meant for each role that they play accompany Sandler. The movie follows the entertaining career change of Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) who goes from being a brutal hockey player to a golf sensation. After finding out that his grandma has lost her house as the result of not paying her taxes, Happy vows to get the house back. After being cut from the local hockey team, Happy is discovered by an old golf pro, Chubs Peterson. He tells Happy that he has the potential to make a large sum of money playing golf. A light bulb goes off in Gilmore's head and he decides to put his hockey career on hold for a while to pursue this idea of becoming a golfer and thereby raising the money to get his grandma's house back. After winning a local tournament Gilmore makes the pro tour and is ready to start making money. His journey through the tour takes many comedic ups and downs as he battles with the villian of the movie, Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald). Shooter will do anything to prevent Happy Gilmore from succeeding. This movie is a classic and undoubtedly one of the best comedies of all time. There is not a dull moment in the movie and anybody who dosen't laugh at Gilmore's antics on the course must surely have no sense of humour. There is no stop to the endless number of sidesplitting actors in this movie. Even when Adam Sandler is not in the scene, Christopher McDonald amuses you with his arrogant yet comical style and the cameo by Bob Barker is icing on the cake. I give the movie five out of five stars and recommend it for anyone who likes to laugh.

4-0 out of 5 stars A modern-day 'Caddyshack'
This movie will have you grabbing your sides and gasping for air. Adam Sandler plays Happy Gilmore, a lowclass guy trying to win money for his grandma through his newly discovered talent of hitting the ball faaaaaaaaaaar in golf. His putting is horrible though. And like any comedy, there must be a rival. A proffesional golfer who feels Happy is an insult to the Golfing industry tries to keep Happy from winning so that he himself can win.

This movie is like a modern version of Caddyshack, and great for the whole family.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good movie
I was totally unfamiliar with Adam Sandlers work prior to buying this movie and The Wedding Singer. I'd just bought my first DVD player and I wanted movies. I liked the two movies. Then I rented Big Daddy. I thought wow, Adam Sandler makes great movies. Then I rented several other Adam Sandler movies. Which I didn't like at all. I think Happy Gilmore probably steals the distinction of the being best Golf movie from Caddy Shack. Maybe not, but Happy Gilmore is a classic and one of those movies I can watch over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Needs to also Have a Widscreen DVD! Not Just Pan and Scan!!!
Happy Gilmore is a very funny movie and one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies!

One question I have is how come you can watch a trailer for Happy Gilmore on the Billy Madison DVD and the trailer is shown in widescreen but they opted to use the cropped pan and scan format for Happy Gilmore on it's own DVD?

That is my only complaint about this DVD and if a widescreen DVD ever becomes available I will buy it and either sell trade or give away or my pan and scan DVD! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining comedy fantasy.
When Aliens (Dan Aykroyd & Jane Curtin) from another World come to Earth to be Studying and Conquest the Planet but when thier Spacecraft is being gun-down by Military Aircrafts. Then they get stuck on Earth and the Female Alien is Pregnant. Then they discover that-they might be stuck on Earth for a very long time. Once they baby daughter is Born, then years to come. The Aliens becoming used to thier new Planet but when a Gouverment Immigration Agency (Micheal McKean & David Spade) are seaching for these unique Extra-Terrestrials.

Directed by Steve Barron (The Adventures of Pinocchio, Electric Dreams, Merlin) is a entertaining, delightful funny fantasy for all ages. Aykroyd & Curtin are fun as the Alien Parents. Michelle Burke (Dazed and Confused) plays thier Daughter. This film was Critically Lambasted back then and also an Box Office disappointment. Many of Ex-Saturday Night Lives comedians like:Laraine Newman, Chris Farley, Jan Hooks, Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler & Many More appears in Small Roles. Watch for:Parker Posey, Micheal Richards, Drew Carey, Eddie Griffin and Ellen DeGeneres appears in Cameos. Written by Aykoryd, Tom Davis, Bonnie Turner & Terry Turner. Based on a Popular-SNL sketch show. Watch also for Jon Lovitz & Tom Arnold in Unbilled Cameos. Grade:A-.

3-0 out of 5 stars CONEHEADS: a fun treat for familes, finally!
oneheads (1993) Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Michelle Burke, Michael McKean, Jason Alexander, Lisa Jane Persky, Chris Farely, David Spade, Phil Hartman, Dave Thomas, Sinbad, Jan Hooks, Michael Richards, Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, Adam Sandler, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Tim Meadows, Julia Sweeney, Ellen DeGeneres, Parker Posey, Joey Lauren Adams, Drew Carrey, Tom Arnold, Eddie Griffin, D: Steve Barron. Spin-off of the 1970s Saturday Night Live skit has the family of cone-headed, robot-walking-and-talking aliens (from the planet Remulak) landing on earth in an unsuccessful mission where they adjust to New Jersey suburban life, and are unsuspectingly pursued by INS agents. Enjoyable family comedy is silly and odd if unexpectedly delightful, with a lot of sight and sound gags, some will go over a young one's cone. Surrounded by the terrific Aykroyd and Curtain (who you can tell perform earnestly) are over dozens of SNL veterans and present cast members. Written by Aykroyd, his daughter, Danielle and younger brother, Peter both give cameos. Running Time: 87 minutes and rated PG for some crude humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny!!!
Coneheads is one of the best comedies I've ever seen. Buy this movie if you like hilarious entertainment...

2 THUMBS UP!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother!
When I was lil I really loved it but now that I'm a bit older I think it's stupid. I only like Coneheads on SNL but the movie itself is really dumb. The storyline just blows it. It does have a huge SNL cast but I just thought it was horrible. Everytime when I see this on TV I want to just switch a channel to a better flick then watching this crap! Only good parts in the movie is watching Chris Farley he's the only one that makes the movie funny the rest of the cast is not funny. If you want to see a better SNL movie stick with the Wayne's World movies there hilarious this movie is just not worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute Movie!
After I read negative reviews about this movie and heard people putting it down I was surprised when I watched it that I actually liked it and didn't think it was as bad as they said, sure it's not as funny as the original SNL skits with Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman but it was good on its' ownright and Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin were very good. Though I preferred Laraine Newman as Connie I thought Michelle Burke was pretty good. I taped this movie when it was on a cable and I plan on buying this movie on DVD for my comedy collection. I definitely recommended this cute movie to SNL fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Keep Em' Comin!
I saw this movie for my birthday last year and it was everything I expected it to be. He was the one that has started it all and is still doin it. This is one of his "Happy Madison" movies (Adam Sandler's Movie Company). Happy Madison has made Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo, Joe Dirt, and The Animal. All of his movies has a certain kick to it, and Little Nicky does. When you really watch it, you can tell they really had a lot of fun making it. All of the scenes are really funny. I think the chemistry between Nicky(Sandler) and Valerie(Arquette) was quite terrible, she didn't fit the roll. Though all of the humour made up for it's lack.

As for the DVD itself, it was spectacular. First it has 21 deleted scenes and an alternate ending. Feature length commentary by Sandler director Steven Brill and Co-Writer Tim Herlihy. Also another commentary by the cast featuring Michael McKean, Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, Henry Winkler, Ozzy Osbourne, and many more. A special look behind the film "Adam Sandler Goes to Hell". "Satan's Top 40", a look at hard rock music with on camera interviews with Ozzy Osbourne, Gene Simmons, Ronnie James Dio, and others. POD's music video "School of Hard Knocks" which was the openeing song on the opening credits(kick...song). Cast & Crew Filmographies, and theatrical trailer.

If you have a computer the DVD-ROM features are quite all right as well. A Script-To-Screen which allows you to read the original script while watching the film. I was quite suprised at how much they changed the movie as they filmed it. Also the Orignal Website will be available to check out on the DVD.

There are also some DVD easter eggs on the DVD. One is a theatrical trailer for Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring. To check it out, all you gotta do is go to the special features menu, and just keep scrolling until a halo appears above Nicky's head.

Over all I think this is a must buy for any Adam Sandler fan. I was happy to see many bonus features that should have been on his previous films DVD's. Though you should buy his original classics first. One of the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hell has never been so much fun....
I will admit that when I first saw the previews for this movie I was somewhat offended by it, because I am a Catholic and I thought that the movie poking fun at christianity and making hell seem like an ok place would offend me, but after watching it, I actually seemed to enjoy it. It pokes fun at both heaven and hell but not in a way that is too insulting. Adam Sandler is hilarious as Little Nicky the son of Satan, although I thought that his performance was funny, his speech impediment got a little bit on my nerves after awhile. Harvey Keitel's performance as Satan was devilishly funny and witty, he did an amazing job. It was great to see Sandler being reunited with a lot of his costars from previous movies including Allen Covert as his flamboyantly gay roomate and aspiring actor and Clint Howard as the nipple rubbing man which just cracked me up. While the humor gets a little bit out hand at times such as Jon Lovitz being humped by a big black bird and one of the devils getting boobs on his head, it still proves to be funny. Look out for other great cameos by Rodney Dangerfield as Lucifer, Patricia Arquette as Little Nicky's girlfriend Valerie and Dana Carvey as a basketball referee.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help
I thought the movie was great but i cant find out what the song was when the two guys are walking into the cop shop to turn nicky in. I really like the song and if anybody knows what it is could you please tell me beermasterking@yahoo.com

1-0 out of 5 stars I really didn't know they made movies that were this awful
I thought Sandler's "Mr. Deeds" and "Happy Gilmore" were awfully stupid movies, but then I had the misfortune to sit through "Little Nicky." I realize now that "Mr. Deeds" & "Happy Gilmore," by comparison, were absolute artistic masterpieces.

My God, how does a movie as uniformly awful manage to get past even the executives that approve a script for production? It just boggles the mind how bad this was, on every level. How respectable actors such as Harvey Keitel could associate themselves with this cinematic vomit is also mind-boggling.

This was a truly painful movie to sit through, and is angling for a spot on my hallowed list of 10 All-Time Worst Movies (alongside Mannequin & Baby Geniuses). I still feel the nausea induced by this garbage.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Sandler Movie.
This movie Rules! I can't say enough good things about it! It puts Rodney Dangerfield, Ozzy Osbourne,Quentin Tarrentino and Henry Winkler in the same movie. Sandler makes a very convincing metalhead. Hilarious from start to finish. Great soundtrack, really helps out the movie. All of the usual faces from Sandler films are here. The special features are great too. Satan's top forty is a good intro for non fans of metal, but provides us metalheads with nothing new. The film documentary is way cool, and the commentaries are hilarious, overall just a great DVD. ... Read more

Don't just think of The Wedding Singer as an Adam Sandler comedy--though it most certainly is that. But also think of it as the tip of the wave of the 1980s nostalgia craze that followed on the heels of the 1970s nostalgia craze. Set in the post-disco, new wave era, the film tells the story of Robbie Hart (Sandler), the king of small-town wedding-band singers, who once dreamt of being a rock star. But his contentment with life shatters when his fiancée stands him up at the altar. After wallowing in self-pity (by musically attacking the next wedding couple he serenades) and swearing off women, he helps a new friend, Julia (Drew Barrymore), get ready for her impending nuptials--only to find himself falling in love with her. If you're a Sandler fan, you'll enjoy him as an actual adult, though a wise-cracking one. And dig all those kooky '80s reference jokes and that greatest-hits-of-early-MTV soundtrack. --Marshall Fine ... Read more

Sandler brings One of his Best Roles as a Struggling Song Writer & Barrymor
